Chapter Four

Akari waved at Laventon when she noticed him waiting for her return on the outskirts of camp. He smiles a massive smile, noticing the Shinx walking by Akari's side. "I said you'd pass the trial with flying colors, and it seems you went and did just that! Congratulations!"

Akari grinned back at him. "Thank you!" While the trial itself hadn't been hard, the pressure to pass it had been. If something bad had happened out there – perhaps losing to Rufflet – she'd have been left out in the cold. Literally. Fortunately, they had won that little bout.

"Excuse me." It's the sentry of the Fieldlands Camp. He's eyeing Akari with contempt, clueing her in that she's somehow gotten under his skin. "Is it wise to leave them loose? One is freshly caught and untrained while the other is a rather loose cannon." It obvious he's referring to Shinx and Pikachu who'd been playing with one another up until then. The Pokémon themselves seem rather taken aback by the comment.

"Oh, dear me." Professor Laventon becomes distraught. While hostilities are somewhat expected due to Akari's strange origine, that doesn't mean one should turn a blind eye to it. "You needn't worry about them. I'm sure everyone here can handle their Pokémon very well. I have seen this young lady show exceptional skill in handling them."

"Shinx are aggressive and unpredictable." The sentry isn't letting up. This is his camp. "That may be good on the battlefield but not here. As for Pikachu, the thing is unruly and refuses to listen. Despite what you say, Rei has proven he lacks the skill to control it. The last thing I want is for someone to get shocked."

Akari frowns. How rude. "Pikachu is a good Pokémon. So is Shinx. I assure you that neither will shock anyone." She looks towards Rei. Unlike herself, he appears withdrawn and ashamed. It's apparent that he's heard all this before. That realization only makes her more upset.

"Forgive me, stranger from the rift." The sentry speaks with a tone of superiority. "I know these lands far better than you. The Pokémon of Hisui are very dangerous."

God, this man is infuriating. Akari must force herself to take a deep breath to calm herself. Responding out of anger isn't something she should do. It certainly won't do her or the Pokémon any good and as upsetting as this man is, he's also right on some level. He does know Hisui far better than her. He likely patrols often and has had to defend himself from countless wild Pokémon. It's just the way things are when it comes to traveling through untamed land. "Look, I get your concerns. A wild Pokémon is an unpredictable Pokémon. I won't stand here and pretend they're not. However, I'd like to ask you not to think of me as some clueless little girl. I've been around Pokémon my whole life – was raised with them."

The tension in the air is palpable. It's making Rei uncomfortable. Professor Laventon too; neither of them are as direct as Akari. However, the good professor knows he must intervene. If not, Akari could be seen as a troublemaker and dismissed regardless of passing the trial. "I assure you that everyone – both people and Pokémon, will be on their best behavior." He gives Akari a pleading look. She needs to back down on this.

The sentry shakes his head. "I'd still prefer that they be recalled. It's for everyone's safety."

Akari can't help but feel angry about this and yet, she also knows she can't do anything about it. Doing so would be considered argumentative and disrespectful – possibly even combative. The social structure of old-world Hisui isn't as free and open as it is in the future. The sentry is also of a higher rank than her, making the situation even more prudent. She's forced to relent.

Akari turns to the Pokémon. "Sorry, guys, I tried." She recalls Shinx who appears rather depressed. The poor thing is being mistreated for simply being a Shinx. Rei also recalls Pikachu, leaving only Oshawott out of his ball. The little otter looks rather upset – not at his trainer but at the sentry. He'd been having a lot of fun with his new friends until that mean man made a fuss.

"Much appreciated." The sentry inclines his head. He isn't sincere.

"Akari, my dear," Professor Laventon calls, getting her attention. "Despite our disagreements this is still a happy time." He smiles that big goofy grin of his. It's obvious he's trying to lighten the mood.

"Yeah," Rei adds, grinning as well. It's rather forced but it's still an attempt. "I haven't congratulated you on passing your trial!"

"Thank you." Akari appreciates the effort. These people are very kind – a lot nicer than she ever expected. In fact, she's beginning to believe that she will be able to rely on them. This place is going to take some time to get used to and knowing that there are people out there supporting her is rather big.

The professor pulls out a camera. He'd obviously had it hidden away somewhere in his lab coat. Old-fashioned cameras are nothing like the modern-day smart phone. It really requires a keen eye and lots of practice to make the pictures come out. There are no second chances after all. Once snapped, that's it. You get what you get.

Professor Laventon holds up the camera, getting into position to take the picture. "This occasion calls for a commemorative photo." He motions for Akari to move into position. Once satisfied, he grins wildly, saying, "Smile big!" The audible click of a camera is heard before, "Oh, wonderful!" Professor Laventon sounds very pleased with himself. "This photo will be perfect. I can't wait until it's developed."

"Me too!" Rei adds. "Maybe I'll ask Mr. Dagero if I can help him develop it! I love going into his dark room!"

"Splendid idea!" Professor Laventon agrees. "Getting to see how pictures are developed is truly marvelous!"

"It is!" Rei nods. It's obvious he really likes photography.

"Do you take a lot of pictures?" Akari inquires. She'll admit that developing pictures in a dark room does sound interesting. As a modern girl, the opportunity to see such a thing had never come about.

"I do," Rei responds. "But only for research at this time. I don't currently own my own camera, but I am saving for one!" The prospect is clearly an exciting one for him.

Akari can't help but wonder how much the camera would set Rei back. "I hope your able to get one soon!"

"Thank you!" Rei says.

"Well," Laventon states, bringing all the attention back to himself. "We shouldn't keep this delightful news to ourselves. We'd best report to Captain Cyllene. I think she'll be impressed that you captured all three Pokémon before dusk."

"Oh, yeah!" Rei nods in agreement. "I can't wait to see her surprised look! Let's go!" He starts moving towards the path that heads back up towards the village. His excitement has him on the move.

"Yes, my boy, lets." Professor Laventon starts to follow.

Akari is about to trail after them when a thunderous roar echoes through the air. The sheer power of it sends a rough vibration through everyone's bones. The sentry is the first to respond, his posture suddenly tense as he searches the immediate area for the Pokémon. He spots it near the edge of camp, prowling closer with its fangs bared and fur crackling with electricity.

Akari swallows, instantly knowing the cry of this Pokémon. It's a Luxray – a big one. She turns, gasping at the sheer size of him. He's not big – he's HUGE! This lion is the size of a car, and he looks pissed. "Oh, this is bad…" Unlike Rufflet, this Pokémon has fully evolved. She also doesn't have the right Pokémon to give her any kind of type advantage. Even if she did, winning is still highly unlikely.

Rei is trembling, looking terrified. "An alpha Luxray."

"Oh, dear!" Professor Laventon isn't in much better shape. "This situation is dire, indeed."

The sentry swallows the lump that has formed in his throat as he moves in between the wild Pokémon and everyone else. "Get back to the village!" He commands. "I'll do my best to hold him off for as long as I can." He pulls a Pokéball out, ready to defend. Akari doesn't doubt the man's resolve. He'd give his life if needed to.

"RRAAAW!" The Luxray's roar shakes the ground. He's not looking at the sentry; no, his glare is locked right onto Akari. He bears his fangs with even more aggression. It's obvious she's the one he wants.

Akari takes a deep breath, attempting to calm her nerves. She's scared, there's no other way to put it. Luxray are resilient Pokémon with devastating electric attacks that tend to be of a physical nature. Wild Charge is the first move that comes to mind. It's a dreadful attack if you're hit but it has its drawbacks, one being the massive recoil.

The Luxray's snarls threateningly as he takes a step forward. He looks ready to pounce. Oshawott, who remained out of his ball, is quick to respond. He jumps in front of his trainer, prepared to defend her if he must. This alarms Akari. "Oshawott, no!" The wild Pokémon's electric attacks will devastate a water type, especially one as inexperienced as hers. Fortunately, Oshawott listens, returning to her side. He grumbles about it though.

"RETURN TO THE VILLAGE!" The sentry shouts solely at Akari this time. There's now a Staravia next to him. It's a decent Pokémon. However, it's a flying type and just like with water types, the matchup is bad; even if it wasn't, Akari still had her doubts. This Luxray is STRONG. It's going to mop the floor with all of them if they battle.

"AKARI!" The sentry shouts once more. "GET BEHIND ME NOW! THAT'S AN ORDER!" She has yet to move.

Akari takes another deep breath, trying to center herself. She still feels a great amount of fear, yet she knows she can't back down. This Luxray is after her, she's certain, but why? She takes a step forward, moving herself in the direct path of the predator in front of her. "You want me, right?"

The sentry shouts, "AKARI!" He can't believe how stupid this girl is. Not only is she disregarding his authority as her superior, but she's approaching a wild alpha Pokémon without regard for her own safety. She's going to get herself killed.

The Luxray's glare turns harsh as he shifts his attention towards the others, specifically the sentry. The Staravia beside him is tense, ready to protect her trainer. There's no denying that the raptor is troubled by the matchup, but these birds are brave when it comes to protecting anyone considered flock.

"Hay!" Akari calls. "They're not involved in this."

Luxray turns his attention back towards her, a snarling hiss on his lips. As a lion, he finds himself impressed. This little human has a backbone. She's also willing to protect her own. However, his rage cannot be so easily pacified. He's a protector too and she stole one from his pride. "RAW!"

Akari flinches. There's so much anger. "What have I…" The word done never makes it to her lips. It clicks. She pulls out a Pokéball – Shinx's Pokéball – tossing it in the air. The little lion cub appears before her trainer in a flash of light.

Shinx seems confused, her little head tilting to the side as she looks up at the massive feline before her. "Mow?" She doesn't understand why he's here. Hadn't he wanted her gone? It's what the other Shinx within her pride had told her after all.

Luxray pauses, his snarls fading as relief overtakes him. "Raw!" He approaches Shinx, leaning down to rub his giant nose against her tiny head. It's a beautiful show of affection. However, this behavior leaves Akari more confused. Shinx had shown all the signs of abandonment when captured. The Luxray before her now counters that. He clearly cares a lot about this little cub.

Akari must think about this carefully. There's clearly a piece of the puzzle she's missing. She certain Shinx truly thought she was abandoned. The Luxray before them proves that's not the case. He'd literally tracked them all the way to the Fieldlands Camp. So, what had given Shinx the impression in the first place? It obviously wasn't Luxray himself so who?

That's when she spots them: three Shinx and two Luxio. The Shinx look cowed and rather upset. The two Luxio appear to be keeping a close eye on them. It clicks. Now she understands. "You three!" She points an accusatory finger. "It was you three, wasn't it? You did this!" The three Shinx hiss, clearly not liking what she insinuated about them. Akari wasn't having it. "Don't give me that bullshit! I've figured out what happened. It's obvious!"

Luxray, feeling protective of his pride moves to block Akari's line of sight. "Raw!" It's a warning. Don't mess with my cubs.

Akari knows it's risky. She could very well be shocked for this, possibly even killed if this massive feline put everything he has into the attack. However, those little rascals are not going to hide behind their leader like cowards. She moves to step around Luxray, the lion snarls in continued warning. She says sternly to him, "You want the truth, right?" He continues to growl yet makes no further motion to impede her.

"You three!" Akari is pointing again. "The truth! Now!"

The largest in the group scowls. He hadn't expected this scrap of a human to get past his leader nor to be so stupidly brave. "MOW!" He gets to his feet, hunching his back like an aggressive cat as he growls. Did she think he'd just roll over without trying to defend himself?

"I'm not scared of you!" Akari crosses her arms. "Now, the truth!"

"MOW!" Oh? Not scared is she. He lets out a Thunder Shock. It hits Akari directly, who hisses but remains standing. The attack wasn't overly powerful, but it does make her muscles dance rather uncomfortably under her skin. However, it's nothing to be alarmed over.

Akari huffs, shaking her head once the attack is over. She glares down at the cub. "Now it makes even more sense." Her tone is stern. "You're not very powerful."

The Shinx gasps in shock before snarling in anger. He lets off another attack. It's more powerful, charged by the little Pokémon's emotions. Akari hisses again, this time in pain but she still stands her ground. Once the attack is done, she says, "You're a little bully."

Another Thunder Shock is the Shinx's response until he's hit himself – hard. Akari's own Shinx has had enough. She leaps forward, past Luxray before slamming a Spark attack right into his side. "MOW!" He cries alarmed.

Akari looks at her Shinx. "Nice hit!"

"Mow!" She is proud of herself. The truth is, she's wanted to do that for a while. He's always been so mean to her.

Luxray walks forward so that he's slightly in front of Akari. She looks over at him curiously, noticing that his crimson gaze is now full of authority. He's had enough of this and like Akari, wants to know the truth. "Raw!" It's directed at the little male cub. He cowers backwards in response. This is the last thing he expected to happen.

"You understand now, don't you?" Akari inquires. "He's been bullying her because she has potential. She hasn't learned how to discharge her attacks yet, but she's not weak. I mean, look at that spark attack she just hit him with." Luxray inclines his head to show he's listening. "My guess is that this caused jealousy and insecurity among her peers. This in turn leads to bullying. She left because it was so bad that she thought she wasn't wanted anymore."

Luxray nods, clearly agreeing with her. Now that he understands the full extent of what has occurred, he approaches the little male cub, his eyes glinting with anger. "Raw." A clear reprimand. It's also obvious that there will be further repercussions for this, not only for the main offender, but the others as well. It won't happen now though. Luxray will tend to their punishment when there aren't so many spectators.

Akari's own Shinx turns to look at her. There's a look in her little golden eyes, one that's full of indecision and pain. Now that she's aware of her true place within the pride – that she wasn't truly abandoned – her bond with them has been re-established. The dilemma now is: should she stay or go? She looks to Akari for advice.

She shakes her head in answer. "That's your decision, not mine."

Shinx looks to Luxray next. He shakes his own head as well. If she wants to go with this human, he won't stop her. This will be her choice even if he secretly hopes she will return to him.

Shinx looks at the ground. She's very indecisive, uncertain as to what the right move is. She loves her pride, but Akari is a good person who took her in. She also recalls something rather important. "Mow?"

Akari smiles, understanding. "Don't worry about my trial. If I'm tossed out of Galaxy Team, I'll be fine. I still have the rest of my family, you know. Oshawott has my back, and I'm sure Starly and Bidoof will too. Together, we will not only survive, but thrive." This wasn't just said for Shinx's benefit. Akari now has three Pokémon at her side. She can make it on her own now if need be.

Shinx considers her options. She loves Luxray very much. He's always been there protecting and sheltering her from all harm. She never should have doubted his love for her. It was a terrible mistake, but it can't be taken back. She must accept that she messed up and move forward. Shinx walks over to Luxray, standing on her tip toes, waiting for him to lower his massive head. She then nuzzles her face against his, showing him great affection. Shinx then pulls away before taking a few steps back. "Mow." She's made her decision.

Luxray tenses, rather surprised. "Raw?" It's hard to believe that Shinx didn't choose him. He looks at Akari, half hurt, half impressed.

"Are you sure?" Akari inquires. "The journey ahead of me isn't going to be an easy one. I must travel all over Hisui to build that Pokédex I told you about earlier. This means a lot of traveling over treacherous terrain and lots of hard battles against all kinds of Pokémon. Are you up for that?"

"Mow!" Shinx wants this. She wants to become stronger by training with Akari and learning how to master her moves. She's already gained a lot of confidence already by battling together against Rufflet. Plus, she wants to help this human with her Pokédex thing. It's important to teach Galaxy Team that Pokémon can be good. That they shouldn't be so afraid of the wild ones.

Luxray looks at Akari, his crimson gaze hard as stone. "Raw." He's warning her that she better take care of his little girl.

Akari nods, understanding his concerns. He trusts her but hardly trusts the rest of humanity. "I promise, I'll keep her out of trouble. You don't have to worry about that." She then smiles kindly. "Besides, we'll come visit from time to time. How does that sound Shinx?"

"Mow!" She leaps for joy. This means she won't have to leave her pride after all. She can still see them!

Luxray inclines his head, pleased. He finds himself impressed yet again. This human is unlike any other; even the natives of Hisui do not compare in his opinion. He steps towards Akari, concluding that she should be considered a respected friend. This has him pressing his face against hers in a nuzzling motion. The action is extremely significant to the electric lions.

Akari's heart flutters with emotion. "I'm honored." She reaches out to stroke the massive feline's muzzle.

An audible click is heard. Akari's head whips around in response to spot Professor Laventon with his camera in hand once more. He'd taken a picture of her and Luxray's special moment. She supposed she shouldn't be surprised as he is a researcher. As for Luxray, he's eyeing the man suspiciously. Akari notices, placing a gentle hand against his mane in a comforting manner. "I promise he means no harm. He's just inquisitive about Pokémon and wants to understand."

"Raw." Luxray doesn't like it but chooses to ignore the odd human. At this point the professor hasn't done anything to threaten him or his pride, so tolerance is currently necessary.

Professor Laventon snaps another picture. The look on his face is one of wonder and aw. "This interaction is incredible! It far surpasses my expectations. Usually situations like this are fight, flight, or die, but Akari my girl, you've done something that no one from Galaxy Team has ever considered possible."

Akari wasn't expecting such praise. It makes her feel a little uncomfortable as she was simply doing what was right. "It's not that big of a deal."

"But it is." It's the sentry who speaks this time. Akari turns her attention towards him only to be taken aback even more. He's bowing deeply to her, his hat removed to be held over his chest. It's a very traditional way of showing great respect. "You stepped in and ultimately saved not only my life but that of my Pokémon, Staravia, as well. Therefore, I would like to formally apologize for my earlier behavior. I was rude and judged you unfairly."

A blush dusts her cheeks. She's never had anyone prostrate themselves in such a manner before her. "No, please, don't! You don't need to apologize!"

The sentry shakes his head. "I was being unjust and unkind simply because you fell from the sky. I admit, your origins are still of some concern, but I've come to understand that you yourself are not bad. Someone who is cruel or unkind would not risk themselves for others as you did today."

Rei chooses this moment to add proudly. "I never doubted her. The way she handled her little Shinx before, and then again when that Rufflet attacked us. It's obvious she's got some sort of special bond with Pokémon."

Akari frowns, looking at the young man unhappily. "I don't have a special connection. I just understand them." The last thing she needs is people thinking she's something she isn't. However, she finds her words falling on deaf ears as Professor Laventon is suddenly excited once more.

"You encountered a Rufflet? In the Obsidian Fieldlands? How extraordinary!" He looks as if he's about to combust with enthusiasm. "Please, my dear boy, tell me all about it!"

"It was an alpha," Rei begins. "He was also a usual color!"

"It was a shining Pokémon?! Incredible!" Professor Laventon exclaims.

Akari can only sigh as the two start discussing the incident. She'll admit the experience is noteworthy, but she isn't keen on the commotion its causing. The sentry is still looking at her with admiration as well. Speaking of which, "I never caught your name." She figured she might as well learn who he is.

"Seth," he answers. "I'm one of three who guard the Fieldlands Camp."

"One of three, huh?" That means there's two other sentries she has yet to meet. She prays that they'll be less suspicious of her than their counterpart had been when they inevitably cross paths.

Seth nods. "Theodore and Ike. I'll be sure to inform them of the events of today personally."

"Of course." She supposed that only makes sense.

"Raw." Luxray nuzzles into her arm, catching her attention. There's a loud purr rumbling in his massive chest. It vibrates right through her, causing a pleasant feeling to seep all the way into her bones. There's just something about a cat's purr that's delightful and one coming from such a large feline makes it even more pleasant.

Akari strokes his mane once more. "You're about to go, right?" A nod is her answer. "Then I wish you and your pride the best."

"Mow!" Shinx also says farewell. This is a hard goodbye but it's necessary. She can't become stronger by simply hiding behind the leader of her pride. It's time to go through some growing pains.

Luxray turns towards the remainder of his pride. They've gathered into a cluster near the outskirts of camp. "Raw." It's a command for them to move. The various Shinx and Luxio get to their feet before lazily wandering away. Luxray follows them without looking back. It's his way of showing that he trusts those behind him. It's a rather significant display that isn't lost on Professor Laventon. He snaps a few final pictures.

Rei looks towards Akari. He smiles brightly. "It's time to head back! We've got to tell Captain Cyllene all about this!"

"Indeed!" Professor Laventon is slipping his camera back into his lab coat pocket.

Akari can only sigh. So much enthusiasm. She supposed it's not a bad thing. At least it means these two like her well enough.

"Come on! Let's go!" Rei is already headed towards the road.

"I'm coming," Akari calls after him. She moves to follow as does Professor Laventon.

Mai gives Adaman a knowing look. "You're really struggling with this." Seeing a reaction like this is rare. As the leader of the Dimond Clan, he's expected to keep his true emotions hidden. The people of the clan look up to him for guidance. If he were to openly display how he felt, it could potentially cause doubt in his leadership, especially during times of fear and uncertainty. As the leader, he must always present himself as levelheaded and in full control.

Adaman is frustrated. "I don't want her among them."

"You sound like a jealous child." Mai says.

"Perhaps on some level I am." Adman responds. "She was able to deescalate a situation that otherwise would have been fatale – not just for the sentry and his Pokémon, but for the Luxray as well. I have no doubt that Galaxy Team would have hunted down that alpha with all their might for what they would have perceived as an unforgivable transgression."

"It was impressive." Mai admits. "That situation would have been difficult even for us to handle despite our own understanding of Pokémon nature. At best, I suspect that we'd only been able to negotiate the return of Shinx with minimal risk of attack."

"I agree." Adaman turns his attention back to the forest rather than keeping it focused on the camp. There isn't anything of interest there now that Akari has left. "And it won't take long for the events that have occurred here to spread all around Hisui. I doubt Irida will accept them at face value due to her suspicious nature – at least, not at first. This will give us a little time to work with but not much. I need to figure out how to start pursuing her before the Pearl Clan realizes the value of obtaining Akari for themselves."

"This is true." Mai has turned her attention towards the forest as well. She makes the motion to walk into the foliage with Adaman following closely behind. "We must also consider that our own people will likely have a difficult time accepting this stranger simply because it's decreed that she is be your wife. Your own mother faced many difficulties with becoming a matriarch and she was of good breeding from within the Diamond Clan. Akari is an outsider and without any obvious ties to our clan it will become paramount that we give her every opportunity to prove herself worthy of the position."

Adaman is in complete agreement. While the elders desire that he be married quickly, they will not simply approve of any random woman. She'll need to gain their respect and acceptance for their children to be legitimate heirs to the clan. "Do you have anything in mind that will help improve her standing?"

"I do actually." A mischievous smile appears upon Mai's lips. "It's a problem we've been dealing with off and on for a while now and I'm curious to see how she'll will handle it."

"The alpha Kricketune." It's said flatly with a hint of irritation. Adaman has grown annoyed in recent months at the simple mention of this topic. This Pokémon has shown nothing but disrespect towards Wyrdeer's seat of power. Mai's chased him off a few times, but he eventually returns to cause more mischief with new tricks to plague them with.

"I want to see how she'll handle it." Mai casts a glance at her Munchlax. He's trailing behind her a few paces with Leafeon by his side. They appear to be speaking to one another in hushed tones. "I also want to see how she handles herself in battle against a trained Pokémon."

Adaman finds himself letting out an undignified snort. "I'm more inclined to believe that you simply want to curb your boredom with a recreational activity since you've been unable to find a decent challenge lately."

"Come now." Mai's smile is sly. "It's more than that and you know it."

Resisting the urge to roll his eyes, Adaman states, "You're not even denying it."

"I suppose not." Mai's expression sobers. It's delightful to joke around but there are too many important matters at hand to remain playful for long. "The main issue that I foresee with this plan of ours is securing the request for Akari specifically. I can't simply ask for her as we technically shouldn't know of her existence. I'm not willing to reveal that we have a spy within their walls for this."

Adaman nods, agreeing. "I'm sure they already suspect as much but thinking and knowing are two different things." He considers Mai with curiosity. "Do you have an idea on how to get around this?"

"I do." There's a mischievous glint within Mai's brown gaze. "Rei will be our request. In fact, I'll seek him out personally and ask him outright to assist us."

Adaman thinks it's brilliant. "He's so insecure with his own skill level he'll seek assistance from Akari rather than handle it himself."

"That's what I believe." Mai responds.

"Do it," Adaman commands. This plan should work if Rei responds to the request like they expect he will. If not, they'll be forced to come up with something else. "Also, if you can, attempt to connect with her one a personal level – befriend her if possible. It will make approaching her easier without raising suspicion."

"Of course." Mai is sure she can complete this task. It's likely that she would have attempted this even without the order. Akari appears to be a very likable person.

The tree line thins as a pair of saddled Rapidash come into view. They are grazing lazily as Adaman and Mai approach. One looks up – a large stallion that dwarfs the mare beside him. He moves to approach Adaman with proud yet strong steps until he stands before the clan leader at full attention. The mare, on the other hand, waits for Mai to come to her before acknowledging the presence of her rider.

Adaman rubs the nose of his mount in greeting. He looks back at Mai whose helping her Munchlax climb onto her own fire horse's rump. It's a lot of weight to bare but this particular Rapidash is stouter than most despite being a female. She can handle a triple mount if required. Mai climbs into the saddle after her partner is secure. She then looks back at him with a smile before lifting her hand in a wave of farewell. "I'll see you later little brother."

Adaman inclines his head. "Goodbye, Mai." He watches her rein her fire horse around before sending the mare into a full gallop. She's headed to for Jubilife Village to seek out Rei immediately. As for himself, he turns to face his own mount once more. The Rapidash is looking at him expectantly with Leafeon sitting at the base of the saddle.

Galaxy Hall was quiet when Akari arrived. It's later in the afternoon with most of the people who worked within the building currently busy with tasks that took them out into the field. She'd also lost Rei and Professor Laventon's companionship along the way. Rei, although excited to inform Captain Cyllene about her success, was cornered by a villager. They intercepted him with a request to remove a wayward Burmy that has made its home in the rafters outside their home. He'd catch up with her once he captures the little guy. As for Professor Laventon, he had to make a quick errand before returning to his office to finish up some work. He'd catch up with her in about an hour.

She walks towards the open office located on the other side of the entrance hall. Captain Cyllene is busy with some sort of document, her eyes scanning it quickly before penning a signature at the bottom. It's at this point that Akari knocks on the open hardwood door to bring attention to herself.

The older woman looks up from her work, the blank expression on her face shifting into one of mild surprise. She puts aside her work before making her way around the desk to stand in front of it. "Have you finished your task already?"

"I have," Akari responds. She has entered the office to stand a respectable distance in front of her superior.

"Very well," Captain Cyllene's voice, although stern, holds a hint of kindness that she's attempting to conceal. She'd hoped for this outcome – even sent the good professor out into the field to help assure success. "I require verification. Let me see a Bidoof, Starly, and Shinx."

Akari reaches into her satchel, pulling out the three Pokéballs containing her newest companions. She tosses them before her, releasing the Pokémon inside. The Starly is a little spooked by his new surroundings, having never been indoors before. Bidoof, well, he just seemed completely oblivious to everything, just staring off into space. Shinx is feeling more confident, choosing to sit before Captain Cyllene, her big yellow eyes sparking happily. "Mow!"

Captain Cyllene shifts, feigning a cough to hide the small smile that slipped onto her lips. It had been subtle, but Akari saw it. The older woman is proud of her. She quickly rights herself; Captain Cyllene speaks. "It seems we won't have to leave you to die, after all." Despite the statement itself being harsh, it's said in a manner that's almost like a joke. Unfortunately, it's dry and Akari doesn't laugh. Captain Cyllene is unbothered by the lack of response. She states, "Congratulations, you've passed your trial."

Relief floods Akari's senses. She'd known that she'd done as requested but hearing it confirmed helped ease her nerves. "Thank you for allowing me this opportunity." She performs a proper bow of respect to help demonstrate her sincerity.

Captain Cyllene returns the gesture. "You may recall your Pokémon."

"Of course." Akari smiles down at the little Pokémon sweetly. "Alright everyone, back into your balls for now and I'll let you out later when I have some down time." She recalls them and places their Pokéballs back in her satchel.

"I must admit you've impressed me." The praise is unexpected. Akari can tell that Captain Cyllene isn't one to give approval very often. "I set a high hurdle to judge whether a stranger like yourself could be worthy, but you cleared it."

"Like I told Rei, I had an amazing teacher." A fond smile grace's Akari's lips for a moment as she finds herself recalling home for the second time that day. It causes an uncomfortable feeling deep within her chest that she's forced to smother quickly. This isn't the time for homesickness.

Captain Cyllene doesn't seem to notice her little moment or is choosing to ignore it. The older woman has instead turned her attention towards a bookshelf that's tucked away into a back corner. She collects a large, wrapped package from one of the lower shelves, along with a pair of shoes. The items are handed over to Akari. "This belongs to you now. It's the official uniform of the Survey Corps. You may also hold on to that satchel I gave you earlier."

Akari bows deeply, repeating her previous statement of, "I greatly appreciate this opportunity."

"Prove it to me by helping us complete the Pokédex," Captain Cyllene states.

"I will." Akari responds with full confidence. She's already helped build one in modern times; it shouldn't be too difficult to do it again.

Captain Cyllene inclines her head. She has high hopes for the corps' newest recruit. "Now, as far as lodging goes – the room that you used last night – I'll assign it to you permanently."

"Thank you." Akari is delighted. It's the perfect size for a single person to live in comfortably.

Captain Cyllene continues her instruction. "I want you to go get changed into your corps uniform immediately. Then you're to report at once to the third floor. You'll find the Commander of Galaxy Team awaiting your arrival. I expect you to present yourself in full uniform. This is your first official order from your captain."

Akari nods, accepting her orders. "Yes, ma'am!"

"You're dismissed." Captain Cyllene returns to her seat behind her desk.

Akari makes haste back to her newly assigned sleeping quarters. She doesn't want to make a bad first impression on the commander by taking too long. It's rude to make people wait for extended periods of time in Hisui. She'll do her best to be as accommodating as possible while following all the societal rules that she's familiar with. It's only a matter of time before she makes a mistake though as she doesn't know them all, but she'll make sure to excel at what she's acquainted with.

She reaches the building she's been lodged in. It's of practical design – a long straight rectangle that is sectioned off into multiple private rooms. The front is kept sparsely decorated as it's only feet from the main street.

Locating her room at the far west end of the building, she slips inside, removing her sandals at the entry way. It's warmed up considerably on the inside from the afternoon sun. The natural light filtering in through the paper lattice windows gives the wooden floors a beautiful golden hue. This really is a nice little space. It just needs a few personal touches to make it feel homier.

Stepping further into her room, she takes notice that a low writing desk has been brought in while she was out. On top, there's a blue paper journal bound with a thick fabric spine. The word Pokédex is inscribed elegantly on the front of it. She's also been given a brand-new ink pot and several calligraphy brushes. It's a nice little set up but she must wonder why it's already put in place. Captain Cyllene hadn't known she had passed her trial until just a few minutes ago. This means that it was done in good faith; someone – perhaps Professor Laventon – had made this arrangement in full confidence that she'd pass the trial without issue. It makes her smile for a moment before she pushes the thought aside. She has things to do.

Akari strips out of her modern clothing leaving her bare in only a white bra and panties. She opens the package containing her corps uniform, revealing the blueish-grey clothing hidden inside. The fabric is thick and heavy yet still relatively soft to the touch on the inside of the outfit. The outside, however, is coarser and itchier, suggesting that Mareep wool was used to construct this layer. This is good as it will not only keep her warm on colder nights but also help reduce the impact of any electrical attacks thrown her way.

She slips into the pants first, tying them securely before slipping on the kimono top. This takes a little effort to get situated correctly. She rarely dressed in traditional clothes back home unless she was attending a festival and even then, she usually had assistance from her mother. However, it was her shoes that gave her the most trouble. The leg wraps in combination with the thick string used to secure them to her feet was complicated at best.

After taking a little longer than she would have liked to get dressed, Akari deemed herself presentable. She fastened her satchel back around her waist and makes her way back out of the door. The sun is starting to get low, dipping towards the horizon by this point. This leads Akari to speculate that she's likely the last meeting of the day for the commander. She moves briskly down the street to her destination.

Galaxy Hall is even quieter than it had been when she'd met with Captain Cyllene about thirty minutes prior. Several doors that had been open are now closed and locked as the different heads of the various departments have left for the day. She isn't alone though, as Rei is patiently waiting for her near the entrance. He smiles brightly when he notices her arrival. "Well, look at you!" He gestures at her clothing enthusiastically. "In the Survey Corps uniform! Now it finally feels like you're one of us!"

Akari returns his smile. "I hope I can live up to the expectations that are expected of me."

Rei shakes his head, clearly dismissing her concerns. "You have nothing to be worried about. I'm considered one of the betters in the Survey Corps and you're far more talented at catching Pokémon than I am. You'll do fine."

"If you say so." Akari doesn't doubt her ability to catch a Pokémon. She just hopes that it's enough to properly earn her keep. Perhaps it's because she's a modern girl, but catching and cataloging Pokémon alone doesn't feel like enough. It's certainly not a lucrative career in the future unless you become a trainer, and even then, you must be talented enough to win regularly in competitive competition.

Rei doesn't notice her insecurities. He's been to consumed by his own thoughts and starts speaking outload to himself. "I do wonder when the captain decided to go ahead and get a uniform ready for you. It's as if she knew you'd pass even before she met you. I mean, it takes several days for a uniform to be custom made and she had one already to go. She also had your sleeping accommodations set up the day you arrived as well."

Akari is caught a little off guard by the ramblings, but they are logical if one considers that Captain Cyllene has an Abra. While psychic Pokémon aren't completely understood in modern times, this typing is known to sometimes share their foresight with people they are close too. It can be assumed that this is where the captain's predictions of the future are coming from if she's indeed experiencing such a phenomenon.

"Oh!" Rei exclaims. He suddenly looks rather alarmed, having just realized that he'd been speaking aloud. "I didn't mean to worry you! I promise the captain isn't weird or into anything strange. She just seems to have this ability to predict different events sometimes. It's random and we don't really understand it but it's harmless, I promise!"

Harmless. For Rei to be so concerned that he feels he must state such a thing must mean this ability is seen by the superstitious as a negative attribute. If she were to mention this to the right villager, it would undoubtedly cause a great fuss that probably wouldn't end well for Captain Cyllene. It's rather troublesome that Rei had let it slip so easily. Fortunately, she understands that is just a natural occurrence that's caused by the bond that's formed with a psychic Pokémon. "You needn't worry about me," Akari reassures. "I have more understanding than most concerning these things, but you should be more careful."

Rei avoids eye contact. He's ashamed of himself but fortunately no harm will become of this mistake or so he thought until Captain Cyllene's voice reaches him from the bottom of the stairs. "I see you've changed." It's directed at Akari, but her hard gaze is pinned onto Rei. He's in for a lecture later.

Akari bows, showing proper respect. "Yes, Ma'am."

Captain Cyllene shifts her gaze towards Akari, scrutinizing the younger woman's appearance. "You have dressed well. I don't detect anything sloppy about the way you've presented yourself before me. You just need this to help protect your head from the elements." She pulls a white folded handkerchief from an inner pocket of her own kimono.

Akari takes the handkerchief, examining it curiously. It's made of the same thick fabric used in her uniform. "Thank you." She slips it into her satchel deciding to forgo putting it on at this moment. It would undoubtably look messy without the assistance of a mirror.

Captain Cyllene straightens her posture to appear more formal. "Now, I recall giving you orders. Go present yourself to the commander immediately. He's currently on the third floor in his office."

"Yes, Ma'am!" Akari turns towards the stairs to ascend them immediately. It felt a little rude to ignore Rei, but something told her that a polite farewell wouldn't be tolerated at this time.

The trek up to the third floor is silent except for the soft footfalls of her own feet on carpet. There isn't anyone around or even a random Pokémon lurking about in the halls. She supposed that shouldn't have been a surprise since most of the people in Jubilife Village considered Pokémon to be dangerous. It wasn't until she was near the third-floor landing that she detected the presence of another person. She hears the ruffling of clothing as if someone has stood up from a chair.

As the reaches the top of the stairs, she pauses in surprise. There's a man standing before her in the middle of a lavish office. He's looking at her sternly with a very familiar face. This man looks like Professor Rowan, only twenty or so years younger. He even keeps his mustache trimmed in the same manner as his descendant. Truly, the only difference Akari can see between them is age.

The man shouts, "I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU!"

Akari jumps slightly, not expecting to be yelled at, but doesn't let herself yield. She finishes walking up the stairs, and heads into the office. This man, whom she suspects is the commander, has moved to stand before his desk. He's giving her a hard stare. Akari is certain he's judging her worth. She stands straight and clasps her hands behind her back just as Cyllene does, making herself appear more professional.

"I AM KAMADO!" He shouts again. "COMMANDER OF GALAXY EXPEDITION TEAM!"

This yelling behavior is startling. She isn't sure how she should respond.

"SO, YOU ARE AKARI!" Kamado's glare hardens.

Akari nods, stiffly. "YES, SIR!" she shouts back. It feels so strange to raise her voice.

Kamado nods once. "I've been briefed on your situation – including how you fell from the sky." Although he now spoke in a normal tone, the fire in his eyes only seemed to grow. He shifts his footing, spreading his feet wide and holding out his arms. "NOW THEN! LET'S SEE WHAT YOU'RE MADE OF! FACE ME IN COMABT!"

Akari's jaw drops. He's not talking about a Pokémon battle; he wants her to attack him herself. It makes her think he's a little off his rocker, but she obliges anyway, charging him. Kamado is ready, shifting his weight perfectly so that he can grab her by the arm, yanking her off balance, while his other hand slides under her belly. He lifts her off her feet with little effort before tossing her back across the room.

"Ouch!" Akari complains. She's in a heap on the floor, looking up the man who just threw her. He crosses his arms, nodding in approval. "You've got vigor – I'll give you that. You need to work on your sumo technique, but I do see some potential."

"Sumo technique?" Akari questions as she staggers back to her feet. "Is that what that was?"

"Basic self-defense," Kamado states. "That's based in sumo."

"Right…" Akari still doesn't know what she's supposed to say.

"Let me be frank." Kamado is stern. "Don't expect a warm welcome from everyone."

The statement is unexpected, but not false. She's experienced open hostilities already from Beni and harsh glares from others. "I understand."

Kamado rubs his chin, seeming to consider her. "Naturally, some will be slow to trust an outsider who literally fell right out of the blue. The superstitious among us might even see your arrival as a portent of disaster."

Akari wants to sigh but restrains herself from doing so. It's frustrating that a silly thing like superstition will make her life harder in this village. That people at any point in history put so much faith in ridiculous hokum without proof is irritating. In fact, people in modern times still clung to utter nonsense even when scientific evidence has debunked a multitude of falsehoods. The flat Earther's come to mind.

Kamado continues speaking. "But you passed the trial that was put to you. No matter how odd you may seem, you're a part of Jubilife Village now. Dedicate yourself to the work of the Galaxy Expedition Team and complete the Pokédex."

Akari bows, showing respect and gratitude. "I will, Sir." It's the least she could do considering the circumstances.

Kamado's expression shifts, becoming darker. "But I warn you, Akari, Pokémon are terrifying creatures. Keep your wits about you as you work." There's something there, something that this man is recalling that's horrible, possibly even traumatizing.

Akari bows again. "I will do as you say." She suspects Kamado might be from the Johto region by the way he speaks and dresses. It's a hostile land around this time in history, with lots of wars, and savage Pokémon attacks that resulted in entire villages burning to the ground. These Pokémon weren't wild though, as many of the time believed, but rather Pokémon that were trained in the various battle arts of murder and destruction. It resulted in a lot of deaths, both human and Pokémon. If Kamado is from a place like that, then many of the other people in Jubilife Village would be as well. It would most certainly explain the high amounts of fear that permeates this place.

"Very good." Kamado inclines his head. "Now, return to Captain Cyllene's office. You're dismissed." He turns, rounding his desk to sit behind it once more.

Akari turns, leaving the office to return downstairs. She's a little lost in her thoughts, as she's trying to recall various history lessons from school. This subject had been one of her easier ones, but it's been a while since she's last been in a classroom. It's hard to recall specific dates and names, like Commander Kamado for example. She knows that she has been taught about him. However, her mind goes blank when she tries to recall anything directly concerning him. Why?

Something then occurs to her as she reaches the first floor. This lack of memory – it must be Arceus. The God Pokémon has locked specific memories away. He doesn't want her interfering with the timeline of history. If she could recall certain events, this would give her the ability to change them or to stop them entirely, altering the future in the process. Areus is ensuring this doesn't happen.

Akari pushes these thoughts aside for now. She needs focus on the task at hand and return to Cyllene's office for further instruction as ordered. Stepping up to the doorway, she knocks to announce her arrival to everyone gathered inside. Professor Laventon and Rei are both waiting for her with the captain. They were all talking quietly amongst themselves when she arrived.

Rei smiles, having noticed her right before she knocked. "You're back quicker than expected!"

"Yes, I agree," Professor Laventon adds, turning to face her as well. "You must have impressed Commander Kamado instantly."

Akari shrugs without comment. That whole experience had been rather strange.

Captain Cyllene is the last to speak. "So, the commander has accepted you." The way she spoke suggested she isn't surprised. Perhaps the weird introduction had just been some kind of required formality. It's impossible to know at this point.

Akari decides it doesn't matter. The outcome of it all is in her favor. She inclines her head, answering, "Yes."

"Very well," Captain Cyllene states, standing a little straighter to give the air of propriety. "We will go over the basics of what you need to know."

"Yes, Ma'am" Akari stands at attention. She suspects this information will be important not only for her job but for living amongst the people Jubilife Village as well.

Cyllene begins. "You are currently a no star recruit among our ranks. In other words, you have no rank at all. Preform well as a member of the Survey Corps, and you will move up through the ranks."

"Yes, Ma'am," Akari responds. This isn't unexpected. She's a rookie in their eyes until she proves herself otherwise. "How do I achieve a higher rank?"

It's Professor Laventon who answers her question. "The more you add to the Pokédex, the higher your rank will become. So, go out and study and catch as many Pokémon as you can. This will have you moving up in the ranks of the Survey Corps quickly!"

That's a surprisingly straight forward and rather simple way to get promoted. It almost seems too easy, but Akari keeps this observation to herself, instead stating, "Okay, got it."

Professor Laventon smiles. "And let's not forget, working on the Pokédex will also, of course, bring you closer towards that goal of yours." He's referring to the request given to her by Arceus. Seek out all Pokémon. Akari nods, agreeing that this will indeed give her more of an incentive to fill up the Pokédex quickly. The desire to return home is a huge motive as well.

Captain Cyllene speaks. "You will need this." She hands over a small instruction booklet on how to make Pokéballs as well as a pink coin purse that's contains currency. "This pamphlet will explain the finer details of crafting the tools of our trade. As you advance, I'll reveal more effective secrets to you. I've also given you 3,000 in coins. Use it to buy the necessary materials."

Akari flips through the instructions, frowning. "I can do that…well, I think I can anyway…" There's clearly doubt in her tone. Pokéball crafting isn't exactly a skill that's practiced in the future unless you're doing it as a hobby.

Captain Cyllene takes note of her insecurities. Addressing Rei, she states, "You are an expert at crafting. I want you to teach our newest recruit what she needs to know. Make sure that she is proficient enough to make an operational Pokéball at an acceptable pace."

Rei nods, understanding the importance of the order. It doesn't matter how talented Akari is at catching Pokémon if she doesn't have the tools to do it. "Yes, Ma'am, Captain. I'll see that it's done." He then gives Akari a big smile. "Get ready for a lesson in crafting! I'm going to teach you everything you need to know and we're going to practice until your fingers bleed!"

Akari is instantly relieved. She's going to have an instructor. Thank GOD! If she was left alone to figure it out on her own, it would probably end up being a disaster.

Rei continues, "Whatever you need in your survey work, you'll mostly make yourself. Some things you can buy at the general store, but it's good to try to be self-sufficient. This way, we can catch Pokémon with Pokéballs we've crafted ourselves." The fact that crafting your own items will save money is left unspoken, but obviously implied. If Akari buys anything already crafted, it's probably going to be rather pricy.

"Well," Professor Laventon says. "That's that. I need to get back to my work." He bows slightly to Akari. "I wish you good luck with your work! I expect good progress with the Pokédex relatively soon!" He then turns towards Rei and Captain Cyllene to bid them both farewell before walking into his lab through the side entrance that's within the office.

Rei watches him go with a frown. "He's also so abrupt with his departures."

"Indeed." Captain Cyllene agrees. "However, I also have things to attend to." She looks at Akari. "Explore the Obsidian Fieldlands and start collecting Pokémon from that area. It's the most hospitable of Hisui's lands and it's the closest to the village. This will be a good starting point until you become more accustomed to your work."

Akari nodes, accepting her orders. "Yes Ma'am."

Captain Cyllene turns to Rei. "You are dismissed as well."

"Yes Ma'am!" Rei responds. He then looks at Akari. "Ready for a quick crafting lesson before dinner?"

Akari nods. This is the official start of her new journey.
