Chapter 26: Double Battle at the Dojo
[Saffron City]
It was a new day and the 2 younger trainers were currently following their mentor through the city. Last night Ronnie Anne and Clyde talked it over and decided to head to Vermilion City to try their luck there. So they were planning to move out tomorrow morning. As for today, Lynn told them she had a place to take them after talking with someone at the fights. They were going to where Lynn wanted to, maybe look around Saffron after, restock on supplies they'll need, then head back to the pokecenter. All 3 of them were eager to get back to traveling again.
"So you heard of this place from a wandering trainer?" Clyde asked. He was curious as to why Lynn was so dead set on bringing them to this place.
"Yup" the older girl replied, still looking at the map on her poketch. "This place is having a special event for brand new trainers. When I was told about this, I thought this might be good for you guys to try. This might also help with your future gym matches." She whispered the last part hoping they wouldn't hear it.
"What kind of event?" Ronnie Anne asked, neither of them hearing what she whispered.
"Well it is a battle" Lynn replied, pondering on how much she should tell. "But I think you should wait till we get there to hear everything, then you can decide if you want to take part or not." After that, both younger trainers simply followed the older girl in silence. After a few more minutes of walking, they found themselves at their destination. It was a fairly large, single floor, Japanese looking dojo. It was painted in soft, but stand out colors. It looked to be maintained and had a couple beds of flowers in the front. There was a sign above the door that said "Goro's Pokemon Dojo". It stood out among the more modern buildings surrounding it. "This is the place," Lynn told them. The 3 trainers then made their way inside.
Once inside, someone there told them to remove their shoes before they could go any further. They complied and entered a large hall. The floor was covered in tatami mat, the walls had things related to Fighting Pokemon, pictures of Fighting Pokemon with their trainers, and things related to the culture of the Kanto Region. In the center of the hall was a group of Pokemon with their trainers, the trainers were wearing anything from casual clothing to martial arts Gi. They were mimicking the person they were all facing, which was a man looking to be in his late 30s. He had spiky blonde hair wearing a white Gi, with 2 teenagers on both sides of him doing the same movements. He noticed the 3 newcomers and greeted them.
"Welcome, I'm Taka Goro and this is my dojo," he said cheerfully. "Are you here to take part in my classes?"
"I'm afraid not," Lynn answered with a friendly smile. "I heard from another trainer that you were doing some kind of event for beginner trainers." She then gestured to her companions "So I brought them to try it out."
"I see, well let me explain what the event is," he replied. "Beginner trainers will battle one of my students in a one on one battle…" he then gestured to the 2 teenagers who were beside him. "...If they win, then I'll give them a free Pokemon as a reward. That's pretty much all there is to it" he then focused on Clyde and Ronnie Anne. "So how about it, are you two interested?"
Both teenagers looked at each other before Ronnie Anne spoke up "I think we should."
"Yeah this might be fun," Clyde agreed.
"Alright, just let me scan your trainer licenses just to make sure you're beginner trainers" he said in a friendly tone. Both trainers gave him their licenses, he smiled and nodded to them before handing them back. "Since there are two of you, would you like to make it a double battle?"
Both looked confused before Clyde realized what he was asking. "You mean Ronnie Anne and I battle together?" He asked to be clarified.
"Yes, it would be faster and a good experience for the two of you" the Martial Arts Master replied. Both younger trainers agreed and he led them, and everyone else, out back where there was a battlefield. Along the way, Clyde told Ronnie Anne how double battle works. His 2 students went to stand on one side of the battlefield, Clyde and Ronnie Anne stood on the other side, Goro stood on the side of the field near the center, while Lynn and everyone else stood on the opposite side to watch. "This is a one on one double battle between Clyde and Ronnie Anne against Steven and Haku" Goro announced. "You may begin."
"Come out Hitmonlee" Steven shouted releasing his Pokemon.
"You're up Hitmonchan," Haku shouted, releasing her Pokemon. No one saw Lynn flinched when the Pokemon came out of its pokeball.
"Let's go Gloom" Clyde shouted releasing his starter Pokemon.
"Let's win this Nidorina" Ronnie Anne shouted releasing her starter Pokemon.
"Hitmonlee/Hitmonchan use Helping Hand!" Both Steven and Haku order at the same time. Both Pokemon glowed gray for a second before disappearing.
"What was that?" Ronnie Anne asked.
"That was a move called Helping Hand" Clyde replied as he started to explain. "It's a move that is often used in double battles. It powers whoever it's used on, and since they used it on each other, both are now stronger. Gloom use Poison Powder!" Said Pokemon then started to release the purple powder on its opponents.
"Well it won't matter if they're stronger now or not," Ronnie Anne said confidently. "Nidorina use Poison Tail!" Nidorina charged forward with its tail glowing purple.
"Wait! Ronnie Anne, stop!" Clyde shouted trying to stop Nidorina, but it was too late. Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan jumped out of the way of Poison Powder at the last second, while also avoiding Nidorina's Poison Tail. Unfortunately, Nidorina was hit with Gloom's Poison Powder. "Sorry Ronnie Anne" Clyde apologized after seeing Nidorina was now poisoned.
"It's alright Clyde" Ronnie Anne told him with a frustrated sigh. "I guess I shouldn't have run in while you were using Poison Powder."
"Hitmonlee use Hi Jump Kick on Nidorina!" Steven orders. The Kicking Pokemon then jumped high into the air.
"Hitmonchan use Fire Punch on Gloom!" Haku order. The Punching Pokemon fists were covered in fire and it charged to its opponent.
"Dodge those punches and counter with Razor Leaf!" The young McBride called out.
"Dodge the kick and then use Poison Tail!" The young Santiago shouted.
Hitmonlee came flying down intending to hit the Poison Pin Pokemon, but she avoided it leaving him stunned from the impact. Nidorina used the opportunity to hit it with its Poison Tail, sending it across the field. Meanwhile Hitmonchan was trying to hit the Weed Pokemon, with Gloom hitting it with Razor Leaf every time it dodge a Fire Punch.
"Let's change it up and use Ice Punch!" Haku ordered, seeing that Fire Punch wasn't landing.
"Use Mega Kick this time Hitmonlee!" Steven shouted, seeing his Pokemon get back up.
"Use Ice Beam to freeze its legs!" the Mexican-American trainer ordered.
"Now Use Sunny Day and follow it with Solar Beam!" The African-American trainer shouted.
Hitmonlee stood on its feet, but winced in pain from being poisoned from either Poison Tail or the Poison Point Ability. However it pushed through the pain and one of its legs started to glow. Nidorina, who was also poisoned, charged and fired its Ice Beam, freezing Hitmonlee's legs to the field. However it was able to free one of its legs using Mega Kick. Elsewhere on the field, Gloom created a medium orb of light and had it fly high above the battlefield. This however left him open to be hit by Hitmonchan's Ice Punch, it hurt but he didn't freeze from the hit. The Punching Pokemon went to continue its assault, however it was suddenly sent flying across the field from Gloom firing Solar Beam.
"Use Blaze Kick to free yourself and follow it up with Close Combat!" the male martial artist student called out.
"Use Bulk Up and try to end this with Focus Punch!" The female martial artist student shouted.
"Use Dig before it can free itself!" Ronnie Anne shouted.
"Quickly use Dazzling Gleam while it's powering up!" Clyde ordered.
Hitmonlee's trapped leg was suddenly engulfed in flames, before it kicked it free and started moving closer to its opponent. Unfortunately Nidorina burrowed underground before it use its attack. The Kicking Pokemon looked around waiting for the Poison Pin Pokemon to reappear, not expecting her to come from underneath it. The sudden strike was enough to tumble it and knock it out. Hitmonchan meanwhile got back to its feet and started to glow with brown energy. When the glow faded, it started to concentrate and its fists started to glow white with energy. However, just when it was almost ready to strike, Gloom started to glow with pink sparkling energy. He then releases it like a wave at the Punching Pokemon, surrounding it and knocking it out.
"Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan are unable to battle" Goro shouted, before smiling at the victors. "The Winners are Clyde and Ronnie Anne!" The 2 martial artist students recalled their Pokemon and started to applaud them. Soon all the other spectators started applauding and congratulating the 2 in their victory. Lynn also joined them while smiling softly.
Both younger trainers were slightly taken aback by this and were a bit embarrassed. This was the first time they'd battled in front of a large audience. Ronnie Anne's focus was then taken away from all that after seeing Nidorina still suffering from the Poison Powder. She ran to her and was about to start looking in her bag for an Antidote, when Clyde appeared beside her holding an Antidote out to her. "It was my Gloom's Poison Powder that did this, it's only fair I should give the Antidote to help her" Clyde told her with a smile.
"Thanks Clyde" she replied, taking and using the Antidote on Nidorina. "But it was my fault for rushing in without thinking. I've never seen a double battle so it never occurred to me that we could get hit by our partner's attack." Nidorina was starting to look better after getting the Antidote and Gloom was also apologizing to her.
Goro then walked up to the 2 trainers holding 2 pokeballs in his hands. "You two still have a long road ahead of you, but if you keep at it I can see you both becoming strong trainers" he told them happily. He then held out both pokeballs to both of them. "As promised, here is your new Pokemon. Inside these pokeballs are Tyrogue the Scuffle Pokemon. If you raise and train these Pokemon right, then it could evolve into one of three Pokemon. It can become a Hitmontop, a Hitmonlee, or a Hitmonchan." Again Lynn flinched at hearing Hitmonchan's name, but no one noticed.
Both trainers took the pokeballs and thanked him, but both were unsure about their new Pokemon. Lynn thanked him as well and the 3 trainers left the dojo with everyone saying goodbye and wishing them luck on their journey.
"So what are your thoughts on double battles?" Lynn asked, walking in front of her students.
"It was…different" Ronnie Anne responded, unsure how to describe her thoughts. "It's not as simple as a normal battle, plus you need to really communicate with your partner or else you could hit each other."
"Yeah, it was harder," Clyde replied. "Also if one of you goes down, then it becomes a two on one. So you and your partner need to work together or you'll both be in trouble. We got lucky our opponents treated it like two single battles."
"That's also true" Lynn said thinking of the battle. "They were still students, if they were more experienced at double battles, you would've lost for sure. Now you both got another member for your teams." She then looks to her students. "So where should we go now? Or should we resupply first?" Both younger trainers start saying where they want to go next, knowing they would be heading for Vermilion City tomorrow morning.
