Chapter 29: Vermilion City Gym Battle Ronnie Anne vs Lt. Surge

"I'll go next," Ronnie Anne announced sternly. Remembering all the feelings she had for the older man. The way he insulted Clyde's battling style and calling them baby trainers.

"Alright then baby girl" Surge acknowledged with his smirk growing. "You know where to go and what to do." Ronnie Anne nodded and made her way down. Clyde made his way to where Lynn was and took Ronnie Anne's spot.

"Great job down there McBride" Lynn said, giving him a smile. Clyde could only blush at the complement.

"Thanks, still I don't like how Lt. Surge talks down to Ronnie Anne and myself" Clyde replied, looking down a little frustrated.

"You don't see what he's doing, do you?" The older trainer asked with a smirk. Clyde looked up at her confused. "You find out later, for now let's just watch Santiago's match."

Lt. Surge and Ronnie were standing in position and the referee saw they were ready. "This is an official match between Lieutenant Surge of Vermilion City Gym and Ronnie Anne Santiago from Great Lakes City." The referee shouted, their voice loud and clear. "Both trainers will be able to use three Pokemon, with only the challenger being able to switch out Pokemon. The battle is over when all of someone's Pokemon is unable to battle or one forfeits. The match begins now."

"Come out Electabuzz!" Surge called out. What came out was a yellow and black bipedal creature.

"Let's do this Houndour!" Ronnie Anne called out.

"Let's start things with Thunder Punch!" The Gym Leader ordered. One of the Electric Pokemon's fists became coated with electricity and charged towards its opponent.

"Use Smog and then Howl!" The young female trainer shouted. The Dark Pokemon released purple smoke from her mouth. This caused Electabuzz to pause its attack and to get off her Howl, boosting her own Attack. "Now use Fire Fang!" Her mouth was coated with flames and went to attack. Houndour bites one of her opponent's legs, with the Electabuzz counter with its Thunder Punch. The punch forced Houndour back, with each Pokemon taking damage, but still ready to continue.

"Now use Focus Punch!" The military man ordered.

"Use Smog followed with Incinerate!" The younger trainer ordered.

Electabuzz's fists glowed bright and charged, while Houndour prepared. The dog Pokemon released the familiar purple smoke, with Electabuzz taking the hit. Just as the Electric Pokemon cleared the poisonous smog, Houndour's fire attack hit, pushing it back into the smog. Electabuzz continued forward against the flames and landed its Focus Punch, sending her flying back. Houndour could only flinch and be stunned from the hit, while Electabuzz was suffering from being burned.

"Try to finish it with Giga Impact!" Electabuzz started to glow and charged while being damaged from its burns.

"Now use Flamethrower!" Houndour released a torrent of flames from her mouth. As the 2 attacks met, Electabuzz continued through the flames and burns. Unfortunately it was too much and Electabuzz passed out before reaching Houndour.

"Electabuzz is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Houndour." Ronnie Anne and Clyde cheered, with Lynn smiling and applauding. Surge recalled his Pokemon and prepared to send out his next one.

"I see you have baby Pokemon as well" Surge mocked. This got both younger trainers to glare at him. "I'll tell you what I told Clyde, you should evolve your Pokemon as soon as you can. Now let's get back to the battle, come out Magneton!" What came out was 3 metal orbs with an eye on each one and 2 magnets and screws on each one. "Let's start off with Zap Cannon!"

"Try to dodge it and use Flamethrower!" Ronnie Anne called out. The Magnet Pokemon charged electricity and then fired it like a cannon shot. The attack hit Houndour's back legs, causing her to slide across the field and paralyzed.

"Finish it with Thunder!" The Electric Pokemon charged electricity around its body.

"Come on, Houndour! At least try to get off an Ember!" The Dark Pokemon fought through the paralysis and fired her attack just before being hit with Thunder, with both Pokemon being hit with one another attacks. Houndour fainted while Magneton took some damage from Ember.

"Houndour is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Magneton." Ronnie Anne recalled her Pokemon, while Lynn and Clyde watched on.

"You're up Nidorina!" The young trainer said, sending out her starter. "Start off with Toxic Spikes and then use Ice Beam!"

"Dodge it then hit with Wild Charge and follow it with Heavy Slam!" The Gym Leader ordered.

Nidorina started to release small purple spikes all over the battlefield and then shot the white/light blue beam from her mouth. Magneton's body was coated with electricity and then charged at its opponent. The Ice Beam did hit, but it just slowed it down for a bit. It tackles her before lifting up into the air and slamming back down into her.

"Hit it with Rock Smash!" The younger trainer shouted. The Poison Pin Pokemon then punched the Steel/Electric Type, sending it back.

"Now use Flash Cannon!" The older man ordered the Pokemon charging its attack.

"Avoid it using Dig!" Ronnie Anne counter. Nidorina started digging and got underground just before her opponent launched its attack.

"Levitate high above the ground so her attack can't hit Magneton!" The Magnet Pokemon started doing so, waiting for its opponent to pop out.

"Come out and hit it with an Ice Beam!" Nidorina's head poke from the ground underneath Magneton. She shot off her attack the second it did, hitting her opponent dead center. The beam was strong enough to freeze Magneton into a block of ice, which crashed beside Nidorina.

"Magneton is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Nidorina." Surge recalled his Pokemon with a small frown, while Clyde and Ronnie Anne were cheering. Lynn meanwhile was silent waiting to see what Surge was going to do next.

Surge's frown soon turned into a smug smirk. "Well I guess anyone can get lucky every now and then" he said loudly. This got the younger trainer's attention. "I mean, that's how you made it this far. You lost to Brock and Sabrina, with your win against Misty being lucky. Sure Clyde lost to Sabrina as well, but that was because he wasn't prepared. You, however, won your badges because of luck. You should go back home baby girl, you don't have the talent to become a trainer."

Ronnie Anne was grinding her teeth in anger. She hated that he was saying that she only made it this far by luck alone. While in the beginning she wasn't taking this seriously, she now was working hard and putting all her effort into becoming a stronger trainer. Clyde was in a similar position as his friend. He helps Ronnie Anne throughout their journey and knows how hard she has worked. It also didn't help when he said her win against Misty was luck, when he won by Misty going easy on him. Lynn on the other hand, was silently snickering knowing what was going on. She couldn't wait to see the looks on their faces when they learned the truth.

"Well I guess we should get back to the match" Surge said nonchalantly, ignoring the 2 glares directed at him. "Let's finish this baby trainer Raichu!" He shouted, releasing a second Raichu today. Unfortunately it was immediately poisoned from the Toxic Spikes that litter the battlefield.

"Alright Nidorina, let's show who's the boss with a Poison Tail!" Ronnie Anne shouted. Nidorina ran to her opponent, tail glowing purple.

"Hit it with Thunder Raichu!" Surge order calmly. Despite being in pain from the poison, the Mouse Pokemon a massive bolt of electricity hitting its opponent. "Now finish it with Thunder Punch!" It then punched her with an electric covered fist and knocked its opponent out.

"Nidorina is unable to battle," the referee announced. "The winner is Raichu." Ronnie Anne thanked her Pokemon after recalling her. Clyde was now getting worried, while Lynn calmly watched on.

"It's your turn Salazzle!" Ronnie Anne shouted, sending out her final Pokemon. "Start things with Swagger!" The Toxic Lizard Pokemon started acting cocky and arrogant, raising her opponent's attack but also enraging and confusing it.

"Now that's more like it" Surge complemented with a smirk. "Raichu use Thunder to end this!" Raichu however was confused and tried to use Giga Impact, which hurt itself along with the poison.

"Now hit it with Venoshock!" Salazzle then started releasing a poisonous liquid and drenched her opponent and did major damage. "End this with Flamethrower!" Salazzle then started to build flames in her mouth.

"Snap out of it and use Thunder!" Surge shouted, knowing things weren't looking good. Raichu shook off the confusion and released the massive electric attack. Both Pokemon were hit with each other's attacks, but Raichu was knocked unconscious.

"Raichu is unable to battle" the referee announced while holding their hand on Ronnie Anne's side up in the air. "Salazzle is the winner and Ronnie Anne has won the match." Ronnie Anne started cheering while hugging Salazzle, Clyde stood up and cheered, and Lynn stood up cheered and applauded. Surge recalled his Raichu and walked to his opponent with a large smile on his face.

"Well that was an interesting match" he said, grabbing his challenger's attention. "I certainly didn't expect you to have a Pokemon from Alola. Once you get your other Pokemon to evolve, I'm sure you'll become a tough trainer to mess with. So with your win here, I'm proud to award you Thunder Badge." He then handed her a badge with an orange core surrounded with yellow looking almost like a sun.

"Yeah, Thanks" Ronnie Anne muttered, rudely swiping the badge from.

Lt. Surge just laughed at the young girl's rudeness. He then set his sights on his last challenger. "Now it's your turn Lynnsanity" he said with a wide smirk.
