Hikigaya Hachiman's alarm clock blared mercilessly, tearing him away from the world of dreams. He groaned, his eyes struggling to open against the morning light. Another day, another battle to face the outside world. He silenced the alarm and slowly swung his legs over the side of his bed, his body aching from the late-night patrol he had embarked on.
As he descended the stairs, he was greeted by the cheerful voice of his younger sister, Komachi. "Good morning, Onii-chan!" she chirped, her face beaming with the energy of youth.
Hikigaya grunted in response, his exhaustion evident even to his observant sister. Komachi frowned, her brow furrowing. "You look really tired, Onii-chan. Did you stay up late again?"
Hikigaya leaned against the wall, his disheveled hair partially obscuring his drowsy eyes. He replied coolly, "Yeah, I was up playing on my 'Vita-chan'."
Komachi sighed, used to her brother's gaming escapades. "You really need to get more sleep, Onii-chan. It's not healthy."
He merely nodded in agreement, not really paying attention to her concern. With a yawn, he shuffled over to the fridge, his tired mind slowly coming to life. He grabbed a MAX Coffee and twisted open the cap, taking a long, refreshing sip.
As he sipped his coffee, memories from the previous night flooded back. He remembered swinging through the city, the exhilaration of the wind rushing past him, and the rush of adrenaline as he intervened in a mugging.
He chuckled softly, recalling the absurdity of the situation. There he was, dressed in his makeshift costume, cracking jokes at the bewildered criminal who was trying to rob a lady on a dimly lit street corner.
"Hey, buddy," he had said with a sly grin, "You should consider a new career. Robbing old ladies is so last season."
The lady he had rescued stared at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of fear and curiosity. "Who are you?"
Hikigaya didn't miss a beat, always quick with a witty comeback. "I'm your friendly neighbor, Spider-Man."
She raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed by his choice of costume. "Why the mask?"
"So my eyes don't frighten the victims," he had replied with a mischievous twinkle behind the mask. And with that, he had swung away into the night, leaving the lady and the baffled criminal behind.
Back in the present, Hikigaya couldn't help but smile at the memory. It was moments like those that made his nighttime excursions worthwhile. The thrill of doing something good for society, even if it was in his own unique way, brought a sense of purpose to his otherwise mundane life.
But as the morning sunlight streamed through the windows, he knew it was time to face the day as Hikigaya Hachiman, the high school student. His life was a balancing act, and he had no intention of letting anyone get too close to the web he had woven around himself.
As Hiratsuka-sensei left the room, Hikigaya and Yukinoshita were left alone, the tension palpable in the air. Yukinoshita, still disapproving of the situation, folded her arms and stared at Hikigaya with a skeptical expression.
"This is ridiculous," she muttered under her breath, her voice tinged with frustration. "I can't believe sensei is doing this."
Hikigaya, feeling equally uncomfortable, couldn't help but agree with her sentiment. He wished he could just disappear into the shadows and avoid this awkward encounter altogether. However, that wasn't an option at the moment.
Yukinoshita sighed, her gaze softening slightly as she regarded her unexpected companion. "Fine, let's get this over with. But don't get any funny ideas, okay? I value my chastity."
Hikigaya raised an eyebrow at her choice of words, not quite sure how to respond. Instead, he simply nodded, opting to keep his thoughts to himself.
Yukinoshita instructed him firmly, "Sit down and go to sleep. I don't want you bothering me."
Hikigaya complied, resting his head on his folded arms, and closed his eyes. He couldn't help but hope that there wouldn't be any crimes taking place while he was stuck in this room. It was an odd thought, but with his newfound abilities, he felt a strange sense of responsibility to keep an eye on the city.
After a few moments of silence, Yukinoshita decided to strike up a conversation. "So, do you even know which club room you're supposed to be in?"
Hikigaya furrowed his brow in thought. He wasn't exactly known for his knowledge of school activities. "I guess... a reading club? I mean, it was the only one that came to mind."
Yukinoshita nodded, seemingly impressed by his reasoning. "Not a bad guess, but you're wrong. It's the Service Club."
Hikigaya blinked in surprise, not having expected that answer. "Service Club? What do they do?"
Yukinoshita's eyes sparkled with a hint of determination. "We aim to change the world, one person at a time. It's about helping those who need it, even if they don't ask for it."
Hikigaya found himself nodding in agreement. It was a sentiment he could appreciate, even if he didn't fully understand it. There was something noble about trying to make the world a better place, even if it was on a small scale.
Just as their conversation was starting to gain some momentum, Hikigaya's phone vibrated with an alert. His heart raced as he glanced at the notification. A crime was in progress, and his instincts kicked in.
Without a word, he bolted up from his seat, startling Yukinoshita. She questioned him, her voice filled with curiosity, "What was that about?"
Hikigaya, thinking quickly, stammered out an excuse. "Uh, it's just... a family emergency. I have to go."
Before she could protest further, Hikigaya bolted out of the room, his thoughts racing. He couldn't shake the fear that there might be a crime unfolding while he was stuck in that classroom, unable to act. He rushed down the hallways, ignoring the distant shouts of Hiratsuka-sensei calling him back.
"I'll redo the essay later!" he yelled over his shoulder as he disappeared around a corner.
Yukino watched him go, her eyes narrowing in thought. Something about Hikigaya Hachiman intrigued her, a mystery waiting to be unraveled. As she turned her attention back to her book, she couldn't help but wonder how her seemingly ordinary day had taken such an unexpected turn, and what role this enigmatic loner might play in it.
line-break
Swinging through the city in his mismatched attire of sweatpants and a ski mask with lenses, Hikigaya Hachiman tuned in to the police radio scanner he had rigged up. The radio chatter buzzed with coded messages, and he strained to decipher their meaning.
"Code 10-34, repeat, Code 10-34 at Central Bank," came the urgent message. Hikigaya's heart raced as he swung towards the reported location.
Arriving at the scene, he saw masked criminals brandishing guns. Without hesitation, they pointed their firearms at him. Hikigaya's reflexes kicked in, and he gracefully dodged every shot, his Spider-Sense guiding him.
With a sardonic grin, he quipped, "You know, guns don't really work on me. You might want to try something else."
Before the criminals could react, he webbed them up, leaving them wriggling helplessly. Victory was within his grasp, or so he thought.
Suddenly, his Spider-Sense flared to life once more. Hikigaya turned, his heart sinking, as he saw one of the crewmen holding a terrified woman hostage. He sneered, calling him "Bug Boy" and warning Hikigaya to back off, or else the woman would pay the price.
Hikigaya's mind raced as he faced a perilous dilemma, caught between the duty to save lives and the reality of the dangerous game he had chosen to play. A tense standoff ensued, the weight of his decision bearing down on him, as the fate of the hostage hung in the balance.
