Jaune Arc was a ten-year-old boy with a big dream. He wanted to become a hero, a Hero of Justice. Someone who could save everyone. Inspired by the stories of his grandfather, he wanted to be just like him and fight for the people of Remnant; humans and Faunus alike. It was a lofty goal, one that would take years to achieve. But Jaune didn't care, he was determined to see it through no matter what. There was just one problem.
Jaune didn't know how to fight.
His grandfather taught him some of the basics, but when he died his father refused to teach him, instead prompting him to learn housework like sewing and cooking among other miscellaneous things. His sisters and mother were no help either, being forbidden by his father to not teach him anything.
As a result, Jaune became resentful of the man. It turns out that his father married his mother because he desired the fame that came with the Arc name. He learned this while eavesdropping on a conversation his father had with his former colleagues that night, implying that he only married his mother not out of love but money. When he told his mother this, she denied his claims before lashing out and delivered an aura-infused punch, which sent him out of the fourth-story window of their house.
Jaune survives this, his aura awakening at the last second before crashing hard on the ground. With his family now officially against him, supporting a scumbag who didn't even love them, Jaune runs deep into the forest.
And this is where our story begins.
Jaune is seen running through the forest. "Damnit, damnit, damnit!" Tears fell from his face at the pain and the betrayal by his family. "Why mom!? WHY!? How can you love someone like him!?" He cries as he reaches a clearing in the forest with a large stone in the center.
He breathes heavily as he walks towards the stone. "What do I do? I can't go back to that house. That man will likely kill me if I do. But if I don't then Jeanne and the others will suffer…" Tears begin to swell up again. "Lily, Rose, Jane, Marie, Barb, Saphron, Jeanne… I'm sorry I couldn't protect you…"
"Now, now, there's no need for tears."
"Eep!" Jaune suddenly jumps from the stone and falls on the floor. He turns his head to see an old man wearing a black suit trimmed with silver and a small black cape on his left side. He wears a pair of white gloves and a fine-looking cane on his side. He has swept-back gray hair, a well-trimmed beard, and crimson-red eyes.
Yet, Jaune can sense that there was something off about him. Something… mischievous.
"Hello there." The old man smiles.
"H-Hello." Jaune stutters out.
"Lovely night, isn't it?"
Jaune nods.
"So, what is a young lad like you doing in such a dangerous forest by themselves?" He asked.
"I…" Jaune tries to come up with something. "I just… wanted to get some fresh air, sir."
"Hm, fresh air, huh? Does that involve running around like a manic with tears in your eyes?" He asked.
The young boy's body stiffens at the question. "Y-Yes?"
"You do realize you are a terrible liar, right?" He said.
"Yes…" Jaune looks down in shame.
"Alright then, young man. How about you tell me what's really bothering you?" He asked.
Jaune looks at the old man surprised. "A-Are you serious?"
"Well, I have nothing else to do and you seem to be a pretty interesting kid." He said as he took a seat on the rock.
Jaune then begins to tell the old man his story. What his dreams are and how he ended up here is a swollen face.
"I see. I am so sorry, young man." He said.
Jaune sobs. "Thank you…"
"So what will you do now?"
Jaune looks at the old man. "Huh?"
"What are you going to do? Will you give up on your dream and return to your family? A family that will use you as a means to an end just like your sisters?" He asked.
"N-No! I want to save them!" Jaune then looks down. "But I'm not strong enough."
"Hm…" The old man strokes his beard in long thought before snapping his fingers. "I got it!" He held his hand out with his palm up and there was a burst of rainbow-hued light which solidified into a gyroscope of rings which turned around each other before shrinking down and becoming something the young Arc was not expecting.
A deck of cards.
"Are those cards…?" Jaune asks, unsure how cards are going to help him.
"These cards are a bit special, my boy." The old man's smile widens. "They each hold the power of a legendary hero. A hero who went above and beyond anyone could ever do. Because of this, they are forever remembered by humanity as these indomitable forces of nature that cannot be moved no matter what, and will use their power to protect them."
Jaune's eyes sparkle like stars. "So cool!"
"I know, I know, I am pretty cool." The old man remarks. "Here. I want you to have them."
"R-Really!?" Jaune said.
"Yes. I have dozens of decks just like that one." The old man reveals.
Jaune looks at the deck taking one of the cards and stares at it. The art depicts a knight in silver armor holding his sword in front of him like he's praying.
"Wowie! Thank you, si-" But when Jaune looks up, he sees that the old man is now gone. "Where did he go?"
However, Jaune's musing is cut short as a low growl enters his ears. When he turns, he sees a park of large black creatures with bone-like armor protruding from most of its body.
Jaune instantly recognizes them as Beowulfs, one of the Creatures of Grimm.
"*Grrr*" The Beowulf growls, saliva builds up in its maw as it slowly approaches Jaune.
"Ah-AAAAAAAAHHHHHH!" Jaune makes a run for it and the Beowulf lets out a howl before giving chase.
As the young man runs through the dark forest, he suddenly finds himself falling off the ledge and lands hard to the ground, losing grip on the cards as they spread on the ground.
"Ouch…" Jaune groans, not noticing the white light surrounding him before it gives out. He looks up to see the Beowulves staring down at the eight-year-old with red hungry eyes.
'Is this it…? Am I going to die here before I can make my dream come true?' Jaune cries but then remembers his sisters. 'No!' He quickly wipes the tears from his face. 'I won't die here! I still have to save my sisters!' He slowly pulls himself up. "I won't die… I will not give you that satisfaction!" He takes a nearby branch and points it at the Grimm. "I'll take you all on!"
"Well said, young one! You truly have the heart of a true knight!"
"Huh?" Jaune looks down and sees one of the cards glowing. "What the…!?"
"Even if the odds are against you, you continue to stand tall even though death is certain." The male voice said. "Here. Take my power."
Jaune approaches the glowing card and picks it up, revealing it to be the knight card from before.
"Now place it on your chest and yell out Install."
"What would that-" However, before he can finish the pack of monsters fall off the ledge and close in on him.
"There's no time! Just do as I say!"
Jaune nods and presses the card on his chest. "Install!"
There was a burst of blue light that engulfed Jaune as energy swirls around him in visible torrents. As this happens knowledge is flooded into his mind. A Knight of the Sun. He stood by his king's side, forever loyal, until the very end. He cared for his fellow knights, his friends, but he cared for the king above all else. He sees him arguing with his fellow knight and equal, before ultimately killing his siblings and kidnapping their queen.
He was enraged, no, he was furious!
He loved them like any family would, and as a result, saw this as the ultimate betrayal. He thought his king would feel the same, only for the opposite to happen and forgave him. The knight never understood this, but he obeyed his king yet kept the traitor at arm's length, never forgiving him for his actions. This grudge not only cost him his status as a knight, but his king's ruin. He was struck down by another knight and, as the king lay dying on the mountain of corpses, he realized his own mistake and mourned for the great and terrible loss.
The burst of energy dissipates, and Jaune looks different. He felt, for the lack of a better term, stronger, powerful. He looks down at his body. He is clad in silver armor with floral patterns over his chest with black and dark blue overall. On his right hand is a silver sword with a blue hilt, to which he immediately finds himself enamored with it.
"Beautiful…" Jaune whispers under his breath.
The Grimm roar and charge towards Jaune.
The boy merely raises his blade and decapitates the wolf monster before it can even react!
One of the Beowulfs pounce on Jaune, but he catches it by the neck and slams its head into the ground. He wastes no time and takes down the other Grimm, his sword slicing through their bodies like butter.
Jaune looks at the now dead Grimm, their bodies quickly breaking down and marbles at what just transpired. "That… was awesome!"
"Indeed it was."
Jaune's neck sharply turns to see the old man standing beside one of the trees. "It's you!"
"Well, well, well! Looks like the Class Cards worked!" The old man exclaims.
Jaune tilts his head. "Class Cards?"
"Indeed." The old man raises his hand as the cards rise from the ground and orbit around him. "As I told you before, these cards are special. Once infused into your being, they will choose a legendary being from myth and infuse you with their abilities, the one that is chosen will be whichever one closest fits your personality. In addition, both your physical and magical abilities will increase to an inhuman degree in compensation for bearing such a strain on your mind and body."
Jaune's head was overwhelmed by the information.
The old man sees his face and laughs. "It's fine. Not everyone understands the concept of magecraft when they are first introduced to it. It takes time and a lot of discipline just to learn the basics." He then strokes his beard. "And it seems the Saber Card fits you quite nicely."
"Saber…" Jaune mutters as information floods his mind. "Gawain."
"Ah, the Knight of the Sun. I thought that armor looked familiar." The old man remarks. "A nice lad, the perfect representation of a knight; willing to serve king and country until the very end."
Jaune doesn't reply as it fits the memories he saw in his mind. "He talked to me."
"Hm?"
"Gawain, he… told me to take the card and use his power." Jaune revealed.
"Wait, he actually TALKED to you? That's certainly a new one."
"You mean this hasn't happened before." Jaune said.
"Heavens no, lad." He pauses for a moment. "You shouldn't be able to hear the Heroic Spirit until after you install the card into your being. Even then, the chances of you interacting with them are low." He ponders for a moment. "But the fact that a Heroic Spirit picked you as its host… that's certainly interesting." The old man begins to mumble at high speeds.
"U-Uh… sir?" Jaune calls out.
The old man snaps out of his self-induced trance. "Oh! Sorry about that. I sometimes get so focused on new things that I just go into my own world."
"Okay…" Jaune nods. "Well, can you tell me how to undo this?"
"Oh. Just uninstall and it'll do the rest." The old man waves nonchalantly.
Jaune places his hand in his chest. "Uninstall." His body flashes and he is back to normal with the Saber card in his hand. "Whoa…" The young boy staggers but the old man catches him.
"Easy there, my boy. Exhaustion after using a Class Card is completely natural. Especially if the user's Magic Circuits have just been awakened." He said.
"Magic… Circuits…?" Jaune said.
"Oh yes. Quite an unnatural phenomenon, aren't they? It was so bad that the gods of this world decided to destroy humanity and create another in their likeness with them at their center." He sighs." In the end, it didn't last long and they destroyed them, too. I'm quite surprised you have them. I was sure the humans of this world didn't have such things. But hey, that's evolution I guess." He said.
"Who… are you…?" Jaune's eyes grow heavy as he loses focus.
"Who me? I'm just a traveling magician." The old man smiles. "I'll let you keep some of the cards. I have the feeling you will lead an interesting life with them. Sweet dreams, kid."
Jaune falls unconscious.
Jaune's eyes snap open and he rises upwards. He looks around and sees that it's morning and the old man is gone.
"Oh… my head." Jaune groans as he slowly gets up. "What a weird dream. I can't believe I killed those Grimm."
"Sorry, kid, but that wasn't a dream."
"Eek!" Jaune jolts upright at the sudden voice. "W-Who said that!?"
"I did. I'm in your head, Jaune."
"W-Who are you!?" Jaune frantically asks.
"My name is Gawain. I am a knight of the Round Table. And I suppose you are my new Master." Gawain told him.
"Gawain… you're the one who told me to pick up that card." Jaune said.
"Indeed. It is nice to meet you, though I would prefer meeting you face-to-face, but this will have to do for now." Gawain said.
"How are you talking to me? I don't have the card installed." Jaune said.
"I am not sure. I suppose it might be because our souls are too compatible. That might be why you were able to hear my voice even though you haven't used the card yet." Gawain surmised. "The question right now is what are you going to do?"
"Huh? W-Well," Jaune stutters. "I… I'm going back. I'll get my sisters out of that house."
"Well, there is no time like the present is there? I will help you every step of the way." Gawain said.
With that, Jaune stands up and walks forward with a determined look in his eyes.
Arc Estate - Training Ground
Jeanne collapses from exhaustion as her father glares down at her.
"Why are you on the ground, Jeanne? Get back on your feet right this instant!" Nicholas orders.
"I… I can't-" Jeanne tries to say before her father smacks her.
"You will do as I say, you little whore! I will not have weaklings in this house!" He yelled.
Jeanne glares at him. "Shut up! I want to help people! I want to help those who are suffering! You just wanted our name like a parasite!"
"Then you are weak just like your brother." Nicholas growls.
Jeanne slowly rises up. "My brother was strong, you just didn't see it. You were too focused on our name that you never even batted an eye for him. And to make matters worse, this bimbo," She points to her mother. "Send him flying out of a window. Now he is gone and we don't know where he is!"
Nicholas scoffs. "Who cares about that parasite? He was nothing but a failure. I wanted to kill him when he was born, but your mother was firmly against it." He then laughs. "I'm actually glad Juniper dealt with him. Now he is gone and we can focus on taking the Arc name into new heights!"
Jeanne was beyond angry at this point. "YOU SON OF A BITCH!" She rushes at Nicholas but he merely takes a step back and kicks Jeanne in the stomach, causing all of the air to leave her lungs.
Nicholas glares down at the choking Jeanne. "You could have been a champion. You could have been one of the elites, a great warrior but your brother was holding you back." He then raises his sword. "A shame. Maybe your younger sisters will be more lenient on listening to me."
"That's enough, Nicholas!"
Nicholas and Jeanne look to see Jaune standing in front of them, alive and well.
"Jaune… you're alive." Jeanne begins to cry.
Nicholas narrows his eyes. "So you survived the night. No matter, I'll just finish what your mother could not."
Jaune doesn't reply, instead raising his Saber Card and presses it on his chest. "Install!" In an instant, his outfit transforms into his knight form.
"What was that, boy? Did you unlock your Semblance?" He demands but Jaune doesn't answer, which makes him angrier. "ANSWER ME!"
"I will give you two choices, Nicholas. You let me take my sisters or I kill you here and now." Jaune states.
Nicholas just laughs. "You!? Kill me!? I don't know what happened to you, but you certainly have a lot of balls to threaten me boy." He raises his sword, Croea Mors, and sports a bloodthirsty grin on his face. "I am going to enjoy this."
Jaune sighs. "Very well. I would prefer to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, but if that's what you desire." He raises his sword and takes a stance. "Have at thee!"
Nicholas lets out a battle cry as he charges at Jaune. Jaune, meanwhile, places his sword under his left arm and closes his eyes. As he does this, the world turns into a negative version of itself where everything slows down to a crawl.
As Nicholas slowly raises his sword to decapitate him, the sun slowly rises on the horizon and its light washes over his body.
Jaune's eyes snap open as his sword suddenly ignites before raising it upwards in an arc, breaking his sword and giving his father a horizontal slash on his chest before sending him flying straight through the mansion, crashing into the living room.
"Guagk!" Nicholas throws up blood before his body promptly goes limp.
Jaune swings his sword, wiping the bastard's blood off the blade before turning his attention back to Jeanne. "Hey, big si- OOF!" He is suddenly tackled into a hug by said big sister.
"Jaaaauuuuunnnneeeeee!" Jeanne cries. "I… *sniff* I thought you were gone forever!"
Jaune smiles and pats her sister's head. "I'm not going anywhere, sis. I promise. And you know what they say about an Arc promise?"
Jeanne sobs and wipes her tears. "They never go back on their word."
"Yup. So, could you go and wake up our sisters? It's time to go." Jaune said.
Jeanne's eyes widened before nodding. "UmU!" She rushes to the hole passing through their ex-father and makes her way upstairs.
"I'm guessing that's your twin? She looks a lot like you if you were a girl." Gawain remarks.
"Yep. She is pretty much my opposite in almost every way. We both wanted to become Huntsmen, but we wanted to do it for different reasons. I wanted to live up to the Arc legacy while she wanted to protect our sisters." Jaune sighs. "You must think that I'm selfish, aren't you?"
"Not at all. There is nothing wrong with trying to live up to a legacy. However, there is something wrong with simply letting that legacy define you. You shouldn't. It should inspire you to be something greater than your legacy." Gawain told him.
"J-Jaune…?" Jaune turns to see his mother, Juniper Arc, slowly walking towards him. "I-I'm sorry-"
"Stop." His sudden order causes Juniper to freeze. "I understand why you did what you did. I am not going to let my anger control me. That is why," He looks at Juniper square in the eyes. "I am taking my sisters away from this house. Right now."
Juniper's eyes widened. "You can't!"
"It's already done, mother." Jaune calmly told her.
"Where would you even go!? How would you even maintain them!?" Juniper asks.
"Saphron has a friend living in Argus. Her parents own a very large house. We plan to stay there for a while." Jaune told her his plan.
"Please, Jaune! I'm sorry for hitting you! Please! Don't take my babies away!" Juniper cries.
Jaune opens his mouth before looking up to see Jeanne with his sisters, all holding a variety of bags in their hands.
"Hey Jaune, I packed a bag for you." Jeanne says holding a yellow duffel bag.
"Thanks, sis." Jaune smiles.
"Jaune!" Juniper cries.
The fledgling knight turns to his mother. "It's okay, mother. Please don't think of it as running away. Think of it as… a temporary separation." He picks up the broken remains of Croea Mors before he walks up to her and kisses her forehead. "Goodbye." He turns his back on her and walks off.
"Jaune!" Juniper yells as she sees the rest of the Arc children following suit.
"Bye." Jane said.
"Bye, mom!" Lily exclaims.
"See you later!" Marie said.
"Sayonara." Rose said.
"I'll write you a letter as soon as we get to Argus." Saphron said.
"We'll do just fine without you." Barbara remarked.
"You only have yourself to blame for marrying that scumbag." Jeanne told her.
"I'm sorry, come back!" Juniper reaches out as the children leave through the front gate. "AAAAHHHHHH!" The Arc matriarch lets out a cry and collapses on the floor as tears fall from her face.
The camera then pans to a tree and in it, the old man is seen sitting on one of its branches.
The old man chuckles to himself. "Rejoice, boy. Your wish will come true."
*Creeeek~*
"Huh?" The old magician hears a weird noise before the branch he's on gives out and he falls. "Aaaaahhhh! *THUD!* Bollocks!"
Author Notes
Here's a new story! One about Jaune this time. I've been seeing a bunch of these in my time in the fandom and I thought why not give it a try. So here it is. One of the things I plan to do is make Jaune younger, about Ruby's age so it can fly home the fact that he is a prodigy (except he isn't because of the class card).
Speaking of Class Cards, yeah, those are going to be a thing here. I saw that some authors pair Jaune with either Arthur Pendragon (boy or girl version) or EMIYA Archer and I didn't want to be generic. So I decided to use Gawain because no one was doing it. Not only do they have similar personalities (that of being an airhead and a bit of a skirt chaser) but his sword fits Jaune nicely since it gets stronger the higher the sun rises in the sky and his symbol is the rising sun.
Anyways, here are the cards Jaune has so far:
Saber: Gawain
Archer:
Lancer:
Rider:
Caster:
Assassin:
Berserker:
Ruler:
Avenger:
Will there be more Class Cards in the future? Who knows? I haven't thought about it yet.
As always with new stories, if you guys like it then it stays and I'll continue writing for it and if not then to the dumpster it goes.
Peace~
