Chapter 1: A Quiet happy life
Xx—Fuyuki City—xX
—Hospital Room—
Naruto stirred awake, the distant sound of beeping machines pulling him out of unconsciousness. His eyes blinked open to a white, sterile ceiling, and he quickly registered the smell of antiseptics filling the air. A wave of dizziness hit him, but he forced himself to sit up, despite his body feeling smaller and weaker than it should.
"Where am I?" he muttered softly to himself. His mind immediately flickered back to the fire, the chaos, and then darkness.
"Oi, brat, you're finally awake," Kurama's familiar gruff voice echoed in Naruto's mindscape. The giant fox was displeased, but there was a sense of relief buried under the growl.
"Kurama, what's going on?" Naruto asked internally, his thoughts a jumble. "Where are we?"
"Far from home," Kurama grumbled. "That bastard Uchiha threw us into some other world before he… well, it doesn't matter now. You should be more worried about your situation. This world isn't exactly welcoming."
Naruto winced, feeling the exhaustion still weighing down on him. The fight with Sasuke, the rift, the fire… everything seemed like a blur now. But before he could gather his thoughts, the door to the hospital room opened with a soft creak.
In walked the man Naruto vaguely remembered from the fire. He was tall, wearing a dark coat, with a serious expression that seemed to carry the weight of a hundred battles. The man stepped in cautiously, his eyes briefly assessing Naruto as if gauging how much to reveal.
"You're awake," the man said, his voice measured.
Naruto nodded, his blue eyes scanning the man carefully. "Yeah… where am I?"
The man hesitated, his eyes flickering for a moment before answering, "A hospital in Fuyuki City. You were caught in the fire a couple of nights ago. I… found you."
Naruto tilted his head slightly, sensing the pause in the man's explanation. His instincts, honed through years of being around skilled liars and manipulators, instantly picked up on the half-truth. The man wasn't telling him everything.
"I see," Naruto said quietly. He didn't press immediately, instead deciding to play along. "Thanks for helping me, uh… what's your name?"
The man paused again. "Kiritsugu Emiya," he finally answered, though there was a subtle tension in his voice as if giving away too much information made him uncomfortable. "And you? What's your name?"
Naruto blinked. He realized he hadn't introduced himself yet. "Naruto… Uzumaki."
Kiritsugu nodded but didn't react much to the name. "You were unconscious for two days. You're lucky to be alive."
Naruto's eyes narrowed slightly. He could tell Kiritsugu was holding something back, but it didn't feel malicious. More like the man was deciding what was safe to tell him. Kurama's voice echoed in Naruto's mind.
"He's not telling you everything, Naruto. But he's not lying either. Be careful."
"Yeah, I figured," Naruto thought back. He looked at Kiritsugu, trying to gauge him. "What was that fire? It didn't seem normal."
Kiritsugu's expression tightened, and his eyes shifted slightly, as though weighing his response. "It was… a disaster caused by the end of a war," he said slowly.
Naruto's eyes widened. "A war? But it didn't look like a normal battlefield." He was thinking back to the strange energy he had felt in the air, and how unnatural the destruction had seemed.
Kiritsugu's gaze met Naruto's, and there was a flicker of something—hesitation, perhaps guilt. "It wasn't a war like you're used to. It's called the Holy Grail War. Mages from all over fought to claim the Grail, an artifact said to grant any wish."
Naruto narrowed his eyes slightly. There was more to it than that—Kiritsugu wasn't telling the whole story, and Naruto could sense the unease in his voice.
"He's holding back, Naruto," Kurama growled. "He's hiding the truth about that so-called war."
Naruto, however, decided to push a bit further, though not too hard. "A wish-granting artifact? That sounds like something a lot of people would fight over… but it doesn't explain the fire."
Kiritsugu shifted uncomfortably, his fingers twitching slightly. "The Grail… was corrupted," he admitted, his voice quieter now. "Instead of granting a wish, it unleashed destruction."
Naruto felt a pang of understanding. It wasn't just a war—it was a tragedy. A catastrophe caused by something far beyond any of the wars he had fought back home.
"What about the girl?" Naruto asked after a brief pause, remembering the redhead he had tried to save. "The one I found in the fire… is she okay?"
Kiritsugu's tense expression softened slightly, and he nodded. "She's fine. You saved her life. She's recovering now."
Naruto let out a small breath of relief. He might have been thrown into this strange world, but at least he had managed to help someone. "That's good… I didn't want her to—"
"—Die like so many others, right?" Kiritsugu finished, his voice somber. There was a heavy weight behind his words like he had seen far too much death and destruction to be surprised by any more of it.
Naruto nodded slowly. "Yeah…" He thought of the wars he had been through, the lives he couldn't save, and how this world seemed to have its pain and suffering.
"Keep your guard up, brat," Kurama reminded him. "This guy's not telling you everything, but he's not an enemy. Not yet, anyway. But don't let your guard down just because he helped you."
"I know, Kurama," Naruto thought back. "But I need to understand this place before I make any moves."
Kiritsugu stood up after a moment, glancing toward the door. "You're welcome to stay with us. My house isn't far from here. I can't promise much, but it's better than being on your own in this city."
Naruto blinked, surprised by the offer. "Stay with you?" He hadn't expected Kiritsugu to be so… open, especially after the hesitation he'd shown earlier. It was clear the man had lost something—maybe someone—in that war.
Kiritsugu gave a slow nod. "You saved Shirou's life. I owe you for that." He hesitated for a moment before adding, "And… you remind me of someone."
Naruto sensed the weight behind those words, the pain in Kiritsugu's voice. He didn't push further, recognizing the loss in the man's eyes. He had seen that same look on so many faces during his battles.
"Thanks," Naruto said softly, genuinely appreciating the offer. He wasn't sure how long he'd be in this world, but having somewhere to stay was better than wandering.
As Kiritsugu turned to leave the room, Naruto spoke up again. "The Grail War… is it over?"
Kiritsugu paused in the doorway, his hand gripping the doorframe for a moment. He didn't turn around when he answered. "For now," he said quietly. "But the damage it left behind… that'll take longer to heal."
With that, he left the room, leaving Naruto alone with his thoughts.
"What do you think, Kurama?" Naruto asked after a moment of silence.
"The man's hiding things, but he's not our enemy," Kurama grumbled. "For now, stick with him. This world's already tried to erase you once. You'll need time to get your strength back."
Naruto sighed, nodding. "Yeah. I get the feeling this is just the beginning…"
Xx—Emiya Residence—xX
Naruto stood in the living room of the Emiya household, his small frame still feeling out of place. He had been released from the hospital earlier that day, and while his body was healing, he could feel the strain of everything that had happened.
Across the room sat Shirou Emiya, the red-haired girl he had saved. She hadn't spoken much since they had been introduced. Her expression remained distant as if she was still processing everything that had happened. Naruto understood that feeling all too well.
Kiritsugu entered the room with a quiet presence, his eyes flicking between Naruto and Shirou before he spoke. "Dinner's ready."
As the three sat down at the table, Naruto couldn't help but feel a strange sense of calm. He didn't know what the future held in this unfamiliar world, but for now, he had a place to rest and recover.
"Don't get too comfortable, brat," Kurama reminded him, ever the watchful guardian. "This place is dangerous. Stay alert."
Naruto nodded to himself. "I know, Kurama. Let's just enjoy the peace."
