After surviving over a week in class 1-A Oswald had learned quite well what every other surviving member of his class had, if in doubt, do as Miyake.
Ever since the first day Oswald had looked to the seven-foot-tall lizard when he didn't know what to do and it usually worked out for him, he tried not to rip off his classmate too much since Aizawa-Sensei would likely get on his ass for that.
*If only I could do the same here.* he thought as scowling as he heard that woman cackling above him in the kitchen, he couldn't stand the woman on a good day and the headache he woke up with was making it not a good day, Oswald forced himself to get up and dressed before stalking up from his room in the basement.
Oswald's bad mood was not elevated upon entering the kitchen and seeing both that woman (dad's wife) and his half "brother" Minoru sitting in the kitchen, trying to be civil Oswald ignored them and just tried to grab a piece of fruit then leave, glad his dad wasn't here otherwise he would've been forced to interact with the bimbo and that disgusting pervert.
He had moved into the unfinished basement just so he wouldn't have to deal with either of them, and he'd never share a room with the gremlin even if there was black mold and rabid badgers down there. On the bright side of having the two terrors in the house meant he was never late to class since he left as soon as was physically possible in the mornings.
Spending half an hour sitting in an empty classroom was much better than one minute with those two and he could focus on his homework without worrying about either of them forcing their chores on him, not that he was alone for long since Miyake would also get in early usually along aside Amajiki about ten minutes after he got in.
Oswald gave them a half-hearted wave like always after the first day and got a shaky one from Amajiki in return, timid as he was Amajiki was a decent guy, if painfully awkward the two times they were paired together for heroics class, and Oswald hadn't wanted to be a complete dick since Miyake had all but claimed Amajiki as his buddy.
And it wouldn't take much longer for Hado to burst into the room with the energy fitting of someone with a stamina-based energy quirk "Amajiki-Chan, Togata-Chan said you forgot this." The energetic girl exclaimed springing forward with an odd box in her hands and Amajiki quickly hid behind Miyake.
Miyake had to step in to keep the girl from bulldozing Amajiki as had already become commonplace in their class, this time he chose to hold Hado up by the back of her uniform "Thank you Hado-San." Miyake flatly said taking the box from her and offering it to Amajiki via his tail, Hado just giggled as she was placed back down on her feet.
"I didn't know you liked insect candy Amajiki-Chan." Hado teased making Amajiki turn pale and he rigidly stood frozen as he stared at her until Miyake wrapped his tail around his waist with a thrill "Do you also like scorpion lollipops too? I got dared to eat one back in fifth grade and it was actually pretty good." Hado asked getting a confused "Eh?" back from Amajiki.
"I have some with me if you want to trade. I've never tried spider ones before! I think I have tried all the flavors of scorpion though, cherry, grape, and orange. I ever found some in All Might flavor!" Hado offered already digging into her bag to search for something and indeed producing a scorpion lollipop that was red, blue, and yellow.
"Eh?" Amajiki repeated dumbly staring at the girl, but Oswald wasn't sure he was fairing much better in the wake of discovering the existence of All Might-flavored scorpion lollipops.
Miyake however looked interested in the odd treat "I've got some specialty taffy I'd trade for the lollipop." The tall boy offered eyeing the lollipop "Ooh, deal! Gimme, gimme, gimme!" Hado quickly agreed bouncing in place since it was rare for Miyake to get wrapped up in her antics.
Miyake dug into his backpack and pulled out a bag full of familiar-looking pink and blue marbled taffy that almost caused him to choke on his spit, Oswald jumped to his feet making Hado and Amajiki jump because he accidentally knocked his chair over when he did.
But he didn't care as he rushed over to Miyake to get a closer look at the candy, for whatever reason Miyake didn't stop him from snatching up the bag, or when he took a piece of the candy and then ate it, the bitter-sweet strawberry taste caused tears to well up in his eyes even if it was had an odd salty hint to it.
"Where did you get this?" Oswald questioned because this was his mom's candy, the flavor was unmistakable and there was no one on earth who could ever make something like the ones his mom made, she made the special taffy from her body with her quirk since her body was made of pink taffy.
"A shop my father lives near carries it." Miyake answered after a moment and Oswald felt his heart doing somersaults "Show me where it is please Miyake." Oswald pleaded ready to drop to his knees and beg if that's what it would take to convince his classmate, he hadn't been able to find any trace of his mom for nearly ten years despite searching for her in every way he could think of, he'd do anything just to see her again.
"I'll lead you after school." Miyake told him, Oswald quickly nodded handing the bag back to him and going back to his desk, he got some odd looks from Hado and Amajiki after that because of his unexpected outburst but he couldn't care less because there was a chance he was going to find his mom after all this time.
He was in a daze for the rest of the day impatiently waiting for the end of class and the rest of his classmates noticed it since it wasn't hard to see the change in his personality, even getting looks from the teachers couldn't stop him from tapping his pen on his desk, Oswald would need to get some notes from someone to make up for the fact that he just couldn't pay attention to Ectoplasm's lecture on advance division.
Though to be fair to himself Oswald was starting to lose hope that he'd ever find his mom, after one of Endeavour's blunders burned down the factory his mom worked in, he hadn't heard anything about what happened to her and his aunt, his dad told him that they had both died in the fire, but he knew that was a sack of crap.
And any doubt he had about his dad lying to him was quashed when he found the divorce papers his dad squirreled away in a closet, Oswald hadn't held his father in high esteem before then since he knew the man was cheating on his mom before the fire (his half-brother was three when the fire happened).
But knowing his dad would lie about his mom being dead then trying to force him to accept the woman he was cheating with as his "new" mom and his entitled bastard child as his brother Oswald would never forgive him. Which left him in a shitty situation at home, hence his plans to move out as soon as he turned eighteen.
But Oswald didn't want to think about that now and he instead turned his mental energy on cursing out the clock for dragging out the last hour of classes, 15:10 could not come soon enough and if he was held back another minute, he would probably even curse Aizawa-Sensei out if meant he could just go to find his mom.
When the bell finally rang Oswald was on his feet and he was anxiously hovering around Miyake as the other boy collected his things, following him was only a bit better since Oswald could be doing something as he tried to think of what he'd say to his mom after all this time.
He couldn't just say 'Hi, I'm your son you haven't seen in eleven years cause you married an asshole.' so Oswald spent a lot of the train ride to where they were going trying to figure out what he should say, and he was not even remotely ready when the train stopped and Miyake dragged him off the car the same way he'd drag Amajiki around.
It was only for a second though as he came back to himself and tugged his hand out of the grip Miyake's tail had on him and he just followed behind the tall lizard, he had to pause when he saw the wrecked buildings but that was hardly enough to dissuade him.
The gang they passed was something that did make him question whether it was a good idea to follow a guy from his class he hardly knew just because he had his mom's candy, which in hindsight was probably not his greatest idea even if he did get to see his mom again.
"We're here." Miyake said suddenly stopping and Oswald almost ran into his back but Miyake's tail pressed against his chest kept him from doing that, looking around Oswald spotted the only building that wasn't in ruin and couldn't believe it when he saw the painted sign which read 'Skipper's' over a white mountain, it was a reference to a movie she forced him to watch when he was younger Oswald rushed over to the door and quickly entered the shop only to stop when he heard a somewhat familiar pair of voices singing.
"Never run~" the one sang though the pitch was a bit weaker than he remembered, it still made his heart skip.
"Walk away." A second equally familiar but off voice rasped.
"Say goodnight." The first chimed in and the second raspier quickly followed up with "Not good day~"
Before both sang the next line together "Clear the aisle and never smile at Mr. Crocodile~"
Oswald froze upon hearing that, unable to believe that after all this time that all this time and effort looking for his mom that it could be so easy now, shakily Oswald forced his feet to move to the other side of the shop where the voices were coming from, and as soon as he turned a corner on an aisle, he saw just who was singing and his brain stalled.
His mom had a twin sister, his aunt Trinity and sure they had shared a lot of things like twins could including quirk, but they were never at any point conjoined twins, so he was understandably shocked when he saw their melted bodies were fused together. They were at an angle, but he could see where his mom's pale pink flesh melted into his aunt's pale blue flesh, a mess of five limbs and two heads attached to a large two-toned torso.
"Mom?" He called and the two stopped from restocking the shelf and his mom's turned to look and he saw his mom's misshapen eyes widen "Ozzie." His mom said, her breathlessly and creaky voice making tears build in the corners of his eyes even as he tried to fight it, Oswald dropped his bag and wasted no time crossing the room and hugged her.
Her three arms were quickly wrapped around him, a breathless laugh falling from her lips "Ozzie!" she cried clearly feeling just as emotional as she swung him around in her arms "Oh Ozzie, honey I've missed you so much." she told him and the pinkette felt a lump form in his throat "I thought I'd never see you again… " Oswald muttered his face buried in her neck and tightened his hold on her.
An odd mirthless laugh was dragged out of her "I did too, honey." She replied pulling back and wiping away his tears "You've grown so much, Ozzie, and you got into U.A? I'm so proud of how far you've come." She said gently running a hand over his head, words that held far more weight than the whole damn party his dad had thrown for him when he got in and more tears began to fall.
"Did he really?" Aunt Trinity asked and turning to her Oswald, seeing her face for the first time and that she had her eyes covered with warped flesh making it impossible to open her eyes, therefore unable to see his uniform "Y-yeah Aunty, I'm in the hero course." He told her and his mom gasped "My gumdrop is going to be a hero!" his mom exclaimed crushing him in a hug "You've must have gotten so strong since we last saw you." His mom mused her happiness for him clear as day even through her distorted features.
Oswald huffed with a smile "Yeah, there's so much we've got to catch up on huh?" he responded and some of his mom's joy dimmed "Can you stay long? I'm sure your father is going to be wondering where you are this late." His mom asked wilting slightly, Oswald mentally cursed his father for managing to ruin his reunion without being there.
He tsked "It's fine, I'm spending the weekend with a classmate, so we got all the time in the world." Oswald assured only half lying, his dad was on a business trip and neither of the other two cared when he got home so he wasn't going to be leaving until school on Monday.
Sure, his mom wasn't exactly as he remembered and he wasn't expecting to find his aunt as well but that hardly mattered, Oswald didn't care if his mom and aunt looked like something shuffling around in a low-budget pastel horror movie because he wasn't going to pass on the chance to finally reconnect with his mom after so long.
Props to anyone who knows the song Oswald's Mom and aunt are singing, Its a favorite of mine.
