Splinter could feel his strength leave him as he took in the scene. He fell on his knees, ropes still binding him as his lip quivered.

Donnie was yelling painfully, struggling within the mutagen as his body was forcefully altered.

His muffled screams were the only source of noise in the lab as everyone stared at the see-through canister in horror.

'I failed, Shen. Our beautiful son…' Splinter could feel tears go down his cheeks as he tried to look away- which he didn't manage to.

He could see Karai force Leo to jump down from the canister's edge, as he was frozen in shock.

Mikey was sobbing harshly, yet still managing to hold onto a frozen Raph, who couldn't even blink.

Even Saki was shaking due to the realization of what he had done to his son.

Everyone stared at the canister, unable to look away.

At some point, the mutagen became so thick that no one could spot Donnie's silhouette. That is, except for a long tail that swept through the liquid and disappeared into the thickness of it once again.

Then, suddenly, a form that was covered in mutagen pulled itself over the canister's edge.

"My son…" The Shredder whispered with wide eyes and a flinch as he looked at the form pulling itself over.

Splinter gathered his strength to resist the ropes, and with the bots' distraction, they didn't hold onto them too firmly in the first place.

He ran and jumped onto the elevated platform that was beside the canister, as he caught the form that fell from the canister.

The fall made all of the liquid fall from its body, splattering it around the creature and Splinter.

But Splinter didn't care.

He turned the creature around to look at its face. To look at his son's face.

He looked at it as tears pricked his eyes once again, an addition to the tears that already wetted his cheeks.

"My son…" Splinter whispered as he held onto the creature.

It was a long serpent, in the shades of purple and green.

It had a long, sharp tail, and a pointed head, each side of it had a row of extremely sharp teeth.

It had hands that resembled serpents, additionally to the creature already being one.

Its abdomen had some type of a golden armor, which probably took after a turtle's shell.

But all of it didn't matter.

Because Donatello was gone.

And all that's left was a monster.

Not that it's any different from before.

Splinter held the creature in his hands, embracing it harshly as his sobs echoed around the room.

Each of the brothers, and even Karai, looked at it in sorrow, some of them even fell on their knees, with tearful eyes.

The Shredder simply looked at what used to be his son silently, with wide and terror filled eyes.

And then it opened its eyes.

Red glowing eyes, that took after Donatello's original ones.

With thin irises that held no recognition.

With a loud hiss, the snake twirled its tail around Splinter, as he attempted to crush the rat's body.

"DONNIE!" The Hamatos, aside from a silent Splinter, yelled out in panic.

But the creature paid no attention, as he opened its long mouth, which revealed its sharp fangs and long tongue.

It was about to devour Splinter.

"My son. Don't…" Splinter pleaded, which surprisingly, made the serpent stop in its tracks.

With wide eyes, it whispered.

"Father…?" Donnie's scratchy voice could be heard, echoing around the room although it was whispered.

Splinter smiled such a big smile, he didn't know he was capable of doing so.

Because his son wasn't lost after all.

"Yes, my son. It is me." His tears of sadness turned into tears of happiness.

And then, the recognition disappeared once again from Donnie's eyes.

With a loud hiss, he untwirled his tail from Splinter, and slid out of the lab in a hurry.

"DONNIE!" The brothers called once again, as they ran after him.

"This…"

Splinter could hear The Shredder address him.

"All of this is your fault!" He roared, as Tigerclaw held him back.

Splinter looked at him with loathing, almost staying to fight him, yet still choosing to turn around and leave to catch up to his son.

"You've won, master! The Hamatos have received a blow that they can't handle!" Tigerclaw reasoned, as the Shredder continued to struggle against him.

Then, he stopped.

"This is not the end, Tigerclaw. Not until I ruin the Hamato clan and get my children back." He said darkly, as they turned and quickly left the lab with the rest of their clan before the fire could harm them.

The Hamatos ran after their mutated family member, trying to desperately catch up with him, to no success. They found themselves on one of the rooftops, just in time to see his tail disappear from afar.

"Damn it!" Raph exclaimed, still feeling tears going down his cheeks.

"Donnie…" Leo whispered, as Karai rubbed his shell in comfort with teary eyes.

That night, the whole family sobbed. They all grieved, for what they had lost.

A friend.

A brother.

A son.

—-

The creature finally found a spot where no one could harm it. Where no one could see it.

It slammed its hands on the floor, groaning in pain as its body transformed.

It felt the agonizing pain of turning into a different form.

A turtle. A mutated one, to be precise.

But this wasn't the end.

As it tried to change once again, and found itself growing fingers.

Growing hair.

A nose. A shell-less back.

The human hissed in pain, revealing his sharp, gapped teeth and long, snake-like tongue, adding much more to his red-glowing eyes.
