The two boys slid down to the ground and Emmett started to talk about the items that they needed for his new project.

Emmett mused, "Maybe Estelle could help pulling out the filaments from the lightbulbs in our house for my invention."

Marty pointed out, "Your invention? You think you can finish it before the end of the Expo?"

Emmett was determined, "Think? I've got to! My future depends on it!"

Marty commented, "Then let's go!"

Emmett stated, "Of course, the oscillating plates will need to be calibrated precisely! Even the slightest misalignment could cause the magnetic field to fluctuate in intensity, leading to sudden shifts in polarity. The results could conceivably be catastrophic."

Marty pointed out, "Who cares?"

Emmett laughed, "Yes, just my sister said. Science should be messy and unpredictable, or else what's the fun of it?"

Meanwhile, unknown to anyone, Edna was walking down the highway. There was a pair of headlights coming up behind her. It was the De Lorean. Citizen Brown opened the door.

He asked, "Need a lift?"

Edna greeted, "Mr. Sagan. Got the 'kinks' worked out of your car of the future?"

Citizen Brown admitted, "Oh no not all of them. But at least the De Lorean mundane terrestrial still remains intact."

Edna stated, "As usual, I haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about. In fact, you remind me of someone… someone I used to…"

That's when she started to cry. She sat in the De Lorean.

Citizen Brown reassured, "There, there, my dear, don't cry. I'm sure it will all turn out well in the end."

Edna sniffled, "Maybe for everyone else, but I suddenly feel very much like someone who's going to be alone and unloved for a very long time. Maybe I should get a cat…"

She put her hands over her eyes, sniffling still.

Citizen Brown told her, "Nonsense! I can state with nearly 100 percent certainty that you're going to have a long and fulfilling life."

Edna wiped her eyes, "How can you know that?"

Citizen Brown replied, "Oh, I think you'll know that I know almost everything worth knowing about you and young Emmett…and his friends." At that word, he almost snarled. He turned to Edna and asked, "Tell me, what do you know about Michael Corleone?"

Citizen Brown drove the De Lorean and it started to go up the road.

The very next morning, Marty was still sound asleep in Emmett's lab. They all had a busy night before. The phone started to ring, startling Marty awake. Marty went to answer the phone after a minute.

Marty answered, still waking up, "Hello?"

"Marty! You're awake, thank goodness!"

That was Emmett.

Marty replied, "Doc, uh Emmett. Where are you and Estelle?"

Emmett stated, "We're down at the Expo. We sneaked out early to avoid our pop. Estelle had to take a quick call from Dimmsdale. If he knew I was about to make a publicly scientific spectacle of myself, he'd hit the roof!"

Marty asked, "Why didn't you two wake me up?"

Emmett answered, "We had tried to give you a nudge before we left, but you were practically comatose! How long has it been since you slept?"

Marty admitted, "Aside from being knocked out unconscious? I'm not really sure."

Emmett changed the subject, "Anyways, I decided to leave you back at the lab to perform an important mission for me! On the table next to my law books, there's a device plugged into the wall."

Marty responded, "I, ah, think I see it."

Emmett questioned, "Is it glowing?"

Marty told him, "Uh yeah. Is that good?"

Emmett replied, "Good? It's fantastic! The glowing means my static accumulator is charged up and ready for action! Bring it down to the high school and…damn!"

Marty perked up, "What?"

Emmett answered, "It's Edna."

All of the sudden, the line went dead.

Marty said to himself, "Okay, Emmett, one static accumulator coming right up."

Marty grabbed the machine off the table and headed out for the Expo.

Estelle was outside of the Expo, trying to find her brother. She didn't see the De Lorean almost missing Marty on the skateboard. Marty rolled into the grass, dropping the static accumulator there. She frowned (still not noticing them) as she went back inside to look for Emmett again. Meanwhile, Citizen Brown got out of the De Lorean.

Marty warned, "Jeez Doc! Watch out. You almost ran me over!"

Citizen Brown commented, "Sorry about that, Martin. This vehicle is sometimes…difficult to control."

Marty wasn't too convinced. Something was off about this.

Marty said, "Uh…yeah. Hey are you okay? After that argument about Emmett last night…"

Citizen Brown gruffly reassured, "I'm fine. Thank you for asking."

Marty questioned, "Where have you been all night?"

Citizen Brown explained, "I've been driving around…looking up old friends…thinking things over…"

Marty stated, "Okay…if you say so…Citizen Brown."

Citizen Brown changed the subject, seeing the static accumulator, "So…is that what I'm 'destined' to build for the Expo?"

Marty protectively asked, "Why do you want to know? You've been acting really weird ever since that argument…"

Citizen Brown insisted, "I just been thinking. Even I can tell that's a static accumulator, Martin."

Marty was bent down to pick up the static accumulator, taking it up in his hands, steeling himself for whatever happened. He got up off the ground.

Marty admitted, "Emmett didn't have to see Frankenstein after all, just a little push and some lightning."

Citizen Brown stated, "Fascinating. I also had an epiphany last night…"

Marty asked, "And what was that, Citizen Brown?"

Citizen Brown explained, "I realized that it wasn't Edna that made my life miserable." That's when he grabbed the static accumulator but Marty had stopped him from taking it and added, "It was science!"

Marty tried to reason, "You can't give up science, you love science."

Citizen Brown responded, "Correction! My younger self loves science. But if Emmett doesn't go through with a demonstration at the Expo, his dreams of being a scientist dim just enough for Edna to step back into his life and steer him down another path!"

Marty asked, "Another path? What other path?"

Citizen Brown admitted, "I don't know, architecture, automobile repair, taxidermy! Maybe I'll even pursue a life in law like my father and sister. As long Emmett stays clear of science, Edna and I will be free to be happy together."

Wishmaker1028: Well, that ends the first chapter of Outatime! I thought this was a good place to stop. I had decided to keep my schedule of updating every day - until I get to finish this. So for now, please read and review! And always think outside of the box!
