Chapter 25
"I can't believe that I had to make a deal with that guy," Carisi shook his head as he stood in Olivia's office.
"I don't like it either Carisi, but in his attempt to make life better for himself, he opened the door for us. The only deal was that we weren't going to violate his parole, right?" The Captain asked from the chair behind her desk.
"Right. As long as we do not discover any evidence that he's been lying to us and as long as he testifies against Caitlin, then we don't mess up his life," Carisi nodded.
"Ok so Fin figures that we have a way to send Dylan back to prison," Olivia explained.
"How so?" The ADA turned to the Sergeant.
"Well first, what are we charging the aunt with? She didn't want to admit to knowing what Caitlin was up to, but she admits that their relationship wasn't so disconnected as she made Liv and Elliot believe," Fin said.
"So, she lied to try and protect her dangerous niece. Seems odd given the injury that she sustained all those years ago," Carisi gave him a look.
"When I kept pressing her, she admitted that Dylan called her. Told her that he couldn't talk sense into Caitlin and that she had to try. Both of them knew that Caitlin was about to commit a crime and did nothing about it. That might not be illegal, but you could understand where Dylan stood," Fin said.
"He's on parole, he admits his connection, and he goes back to prison," Elliot spoke up.
"Exactly. Plus, Dylan said he did not know about the gun until he confronted Caitlin about Drew's death. She admitted that she did it and stashed the weapon," Fin explained.
"So, Caitlin got the gun and the aunt…" Carisi gave him a look.
"I looked into it while Sally was sitting in the conference room. She bought a nine-millimeter back around the time Caitlin hurt her. When I confronted her about it, she claimed that she hadn't seen that gun in almost a decade. I forwarded the serial numbers to forensics," Fin told them. The ADA nodded and asked,
"She still in the conference room?"
"Yup," Fin nodded.
"Time for good cop, bad cop," Elliot said.
"Agreed. Tell her we know that the gun that killed Drew was hers. Let's see what she says to that. Remind her that it makes her an accessory," Carisi told them.
"What about Dylan?" Fin wanted to know.
"What did he give you besides the gun location and the crazy plan?" The ADA gave him a look.
"Carisi, Dylan admitted that he researched Klass. He was able to find out about her partner, about her getting shot, about Betty. He claims that Klass was screwed up enough that he didn't need to do anything to her. This, the guy who was boiling with rage, when he was convicted. He just gives up on his quest because he suddenly has emotions other than rage? Since when would that happen?" Fin asked.
"He's not wrong. I think that the minute Dylan is in the clear or he believes he's in the clear, he'll go after Klass. Caitlin has admitted to hurting Akiko and killing Drew. As far as he's concerned, he got what he wanted – Caitlin will go down and he'll have Klass's address for safe keeping," George spoke up. He'd been listening, trying to assess what was coming next and what needed to be done.
"Yes, but that's not a crime. He hasn't done anything to her yet. Are we supposed to keep Klass and Betty in protective custody for the rest of their lives? Waiting for something that might not happen?" Carisi wanted to know.
"No, but can't we use that to our advantage? After all, the man is on parole. How many guys on parole admit to looking up the detectives who arrested them? Of those who do, how many are out for revenge?" Olivia gave the ADA a look.
"I think we need to see just how evolved Dylan has become. Have Klass and Betty tell him he can go home. After all, you need to get him a letter for his boss and the halfway house, right?" George asked.
"Give me ten minutes. I'll write the letters up. Meantime, Elliot, Fin, go find out just how far Sally is willing to go for her niece given the gun "developments"," the Captain gave her orders and the group got to work.
