After Andre dropped her home, Cat ran straight into Jade's room, eager to tell her all about her meeting. She was full of a weird amount of adrenaline. So much was going on in her head, so much that she had to say and ask Jade about. Her girlfriend was the sensible one, most of the time, she always knew how to take millions of thoughts Cat had and turn them into a more manageable amount.
"Do you want to sign to a label?" Jade said plainly, taking Cat's wildly flapping hands in her own- interrupting her ramble of questions.
Cat paused at this, taking a deep breath and closing her eyes as if willing all of her thoughts to line up. "I- I think so."
"For your sake or Andre's?" Was her next question.
"I- I don't know." Cat replied honestly. Singing wasn't her thing. Well singing was one of her things it being a singer? She wasn't sure if it was for her.
"Until they actually give you a contract, you don't have to decide." Jade told her, "And if you do decide no- Andre won't hold it against you Babe, you know that right?"
"Uhuh." Cat nodded, her thoughts really not slowing down. Often when her brain was like this, it wouldn't just be one high speed thought. More joined the mix too. Random things that had been in the back of her mind jumped foward. Which brought her to say something she never thought she'd say. "Would you teach me how to drive?" She asked her girlfriend suddenly. She was 2 years past 16, and it really was about time she learnt, but money always held her back. That, and that the idea of being able to drive was absolutely terrifying. She was so scared of the idea that she could be in control of something that could kill someone. But if she didn't try and focus on something else- something big- her brain would explode with the thoughts of music and contracts.
"Are you sure?" Jade asked, raising an eyebrow as she checked if Cat was telling the truth.
"A b-jillion percent sure." She nodded quickly.
"Alright then." Jade shrugged. It potentially wasn't the best idea to put Cat behind the wheel while full of that much energy, but this was the first time she had shown any interest in wanting to learn how to drive so she sure as hell wasn't going to tell her no.
Jade threw her the car keys and they left the house, Cat skipping off ahead in excitement and unlocking the car, a wide grin plastered on her face. She opened the car door before Jade called out to her "Cat, you're supposed to be on the driver's side."
Cat's eyes widened. "Oh! Right!" She scurried around to the correct side, barely managing to get the door open in her excitement.
Jade slid into the passenger seat and buckled her seatbelt, giving Cat a long, assessing look. "First rule of driving, Cat: Don't get too excited. That's how you end up hitting something… or someone."
Cat giggled nervously, her hands gripping the steering wheel at ten and two, just like they said in the movies she'd watched. "Got it! No excitement. Just calm, focused… oh, the peddles are far away."
Jade groaned. "Thats cause you're like 4ft tall." She rolled her eyes. "Under the seat, in front of you there's a bar-" Before Jade finished, Cat lifted it up and the seat shot all the way forward. Conveniently, thats exactly the place she needed it. "That'll be a pain to put back to how I like it." Jade muttered under her breath. "Okay do they feel the right distance now?"
"If I press them will the car go forward?" Cat asked before testing it out.
"Not until you turn the engine on and take off the parking brake." She replied, "Put the key in the ignition now."
"Kay kay." Cat replied, fumbling with the keys, finally managing to start the engine. She gasped as the car rumbled to life. "Oooh."
Jade resisted the urge to roll her eyes. Luckily she preferred to reverse onto the driveway so all Cat had to do was drive up to the gate, let it open, and then turn onto the typically empty road. "Now, put it into drive, take off the break and just ease your foot onto the gas. Slowly."
Cat obeyed, tapping the gas pedal lightly, causing the car to jerk forward in a series of small hops.
Jade clutched the door handle. "Smoother, Cat. Don't slam on it—just a gentle push."
Cat's hands tightened on the wheel as she focused. This time, she applied more consistent pressure, and the car started to move forward, smoother than before.
Jade let out a breath. "Good. Now take your foot off and put it on softly on break and wait for the gate to open." And Cat followed as it did. "Now, turn left off the drive here." She checked both ways. "But make sure you signal first."
Cat turned to Jade, confused. "Signal what?"
"The turn signal, Cat," Jade said, pointing at the lever by the steering wheel.
"Ohhh!" Cat clicked the lever, checking on her hands to remember which was left. At least she remembered to keep her foot on the break while doing it.
"Okay, you're doing alright. Now, gently press the accelerator again and feed the wheel through your hands."
It went surprisingly well as they picked up a little speed until the end of the road where there was a stop sign, which Jade reminded her of. At this, Cat stomped on the brake, and they both lurched forward, Jade letting out a grunt as the seatbelt dug into her shoulder.
"Gentle, Cat! We're not trying to throw ourselves out the windshield," Jade said, rubbing her shoulder.
Cat's cheeks flushed. "Oops! I'm sorry, Jade! Braking is just so… powerful!"
They went around the block twice, only turning right at each intersection to complete a loop. Cat was slowly getting the hang of pressing the pedals gently and turning smoothly. Occasionally, she would gasp in delight at the thrill of driving, while Jade kept her eyes on the road and gave a constant stream of instructions.
Finally, as she pulled back onto the driveway, Jade crossed her arms, leaning back in her seat. "Alright, Cat. Not bad. You didn't crash, which is a good start."
Cat's eyes sparkled. "Really? Does that mean I can drive us some more?"
Jade smirked. "We'll keep practicing. It gets harder when there's actually other people on the road too- it was very quiet just then. Who knows? Maybe one day you'll be… decent."
Cat giggled, her earlier nervousness replaced by pure joy. "Thanks, Jade! You're, like, the best driving teacher ever!"
Jade smiled at her happiness. "I have my uses."
A/N - I know you've gotta be 21 to teach other people how to drive - and I actually think it's 25 in California. I don't care I wanted this cute plot point :)
