Sonny was standing at the railing looking out at the ocean and watching the waves thinking about the previous night's mission and the kiss he and Lisa shared. Just then, Lisa walked out on the balcony and towards Sonny.
When she got closer she said "Hey, thought you might be getting hungry," while holding out a protein bar.
"Woah," Sonny exclaimed, "what we got?" Even after all these years, she still took care of him. As Sonny read the label, Lisa alerted him that Ray's team hit three dry holes and were on their way back.
"Yeah?"
"Yep." Lisa replied as she moved to stand right next to Sonny at the railing.
Both of them were looking out at the water. Sonny turned so his back was on the railing and he could see Lisa straight on. Half teasing, half serious, Sonny remarked, "If we're going to get a quickie in, now's our chance." He flirtatiously raised his eyebrows and let out a small chuckle.
Lisa shook her head smiling, "I'm so glad that becoming a father has matured you."
The look of disappointment was evident on Sonny's face as he leaned in towards Lisa and asked, "So the kiss was just a cover?"
"Sonny," she said in a tone that conveyed that he should know the answer to that.
Sonny looked directly at her, "Kinda felt real to me." For Sonny, any kiss was always going to feel real and he was hoping Lisa still felt the same. Lisa couldn't admit to Sonny that she felt the same or that that kiss had set her body on fire. She couldn't tell him any of these things because she knew what those words would set into motion.
Lisa replied hesitantly, "I know… but between hunting Nazario and this Decker investigation there's a lot of eyes on us. We can't do this."
Sonny leaned in close and used all the control he could muster not to kiss her right there, "Roger that, lieutenant." He turned and walked away.
Lisa continued to lean on the balcony railing looking at the ocean and sighed at the irony. This was just the sort of place lovers would come for vacation. Right now it felt like the universe was playing a cruel joke on them. She glanced over at Sonny who was already across the balcony and climbing the concrete staircase. Without another thought, Lisa pushed back from the railing and called his name. She had no idea what she was going to do or say next. But the sight of him walking away made her heart break. Her voice stopped his climb and he turned to lock eyes with her. The hopeful look on Sonny's face melted any resolve Lisa had left and she quickly started making her way over to him.
Sonny just stared at her, a little unsure of what she was doing. When she got closer, he realized what Lisa wanted. Sonny always portrayed himself as just a dumb knuckle dragger, but one thing was certain, he knew Lisa Davis. He bounded back down the stairs and within seconds he was face to face with her. She looked up at him with pleading eyes, desperate for a different reality. Sonny gently wrapped one arm around her waist pulling her tight against him while cupping her neck and face with his other hand. Lisa tilted her head to the side and closed her eyes as she leaned into Sonny's hand. An instant sense of security washed over her and she took a deep breath. The next sensation Lisa felt was Sonny's lips on hers as he slowly and passionately kissed her. When they pulled apart, Lisa answered without Sonny even having to ask the question. "We only have 27 minutes."
Sonny nodded, "Yes, Ma'am".
Grabbing Lisa's hand, he turned back towards the stairs and began leading her to the second floor. They walked past the team guy's quarters and around the corner to Lisa's room. Sonny opened the door, pulled Lisa in and shut it. As much as they both would have liked for it to be different, time was not on their side. It was pure torture for them to not be able to go slow and revel in each other. With shoes kicked off, and their clothes removed, Sonny placed his hands on Lisa's hips and pushed her backwards towards the bed. The afternoon light was streaming in from the window and the sound of crashing waves filled the room but the beauty of their surroundings was lost on them both. For a few precious minutes, the job, the mission, and all separations faded away. Over the years, they had had to learn to make their moments count and that is exactly what they did.
It had felt like only seconds, but both Lisa and Sonny knew that their time had slipped away and the team would be returning any minute. Sonny laid on his side with his head propped on one hand and the other stroking Lisa's cheek. Lisa looked up at Sonny, tears just forming in the corners of her eyes. "You are the love of my life."' she whispered. Sonny smiled, slowly kissed her on the forehead and had to swallow hard to keep his emotions in check. Sonny got up, put on his boxers and pants and reached for his shirt before he turned to look at Lisa again. Lisa instantly questioned the wisdom and consequences of acting with her heart and not her head. She stood and got redressed without making eye contact with Sonny. When she finally glanced at him, he was standing by the door.
Sonny watched her intently as she moved toward him. He sensed the internal debate she was navigating. Sonny knew Lisa loved him, he knew she loved her job and he knew that she agonized knowing having one meant losing the other. He didn't want her to regret choosing them for these twenty-seven minutes so he picked his words carefully. "Ya know what ya mean to me …hasn't changed, never will." Then he placed one last kiss on Lisa's lips.
They both knew they were racing against the clock of the team's return. Sonny bent down to pick up his shoes as Lisa bent down to pick up his hat. She placed it on his head, pulled down the brim over his eyes and smiled. Sonny chuckled, fixed his hat and gave Lisa a wink. Holding his shoes in one hand, he turned the handle and walked out the door quietly closing it behind him. "There is never enough time" he thought as he returned to the balcony.
On the other side of the door, waves of gratitude and grief flooded Lisa's thoughts. Grateful for the unmistakable love they shared and mournful for never being able to express it fully. The familiar sound of her phone dinging brought her out of her haze. "No rest for the weary,"she thought. Lisa slipped on her shoes, checked herself in the mirror and headed downstairs cursing the clock.
