Mrs. Eames fished out an album from her bookshelf and proudly opened it with a smile brimming ear to ear keen to share about her little Alexandra. Her hands brushed over the images that matched each memory in her mind and then handed it over to Goren who was eager to glance over its pages.
He flipped each page carefully scanning each photo. His smile getting bigger as he got deeper into the book.
Then, he stopped on a photo of Eames on her prom day standing next to her date with flowers in her hand.
"Ah yes that was prom. You know my Alexandra was prom queen."
"Mom!"
"Well, you were. What's to be embarrassed about? You were always so pretty."
He nodded, "Still is." Then, he coughed and regrouped, "Hey, wasn't that was the same year you sold matchsticks in front of city hall?"
"Yeah well dad only gave me $50 for the dress. I needed money somehow."
"all you needed was the dress."
"What's a prom queen to do? There was also the afterparty at Jim's."
He turned the page and Eames was glad for the reprieve as she felt as he stayed on that page longer than the others. Was he jealous? "Oh is this your academy photo?" He beamed so proud of his partner who returned the same smile before grabbing the photo album and said, "That's enough of that."
"How about you join me over here," Mr. Eames offered to Goren as he made his way back to his favorite chair with two glasses of Jameson and two cigars."
"Alright," Goren responded as he walked his way over to join her dad.
"So, how was it with the new partner. I can't imagine that went well."
"Bishop was alright just no shorthand."
"That shorthand can save your life one day in the field. There's no price on it."
"We protect each other out there."
"I sure hope so that's my baby girl out there but I feel like she's in good hands with you. You're smart and with her instincts..."
"I'm sure she picked that up from you. She's proud to be a legacy and she's a damn good detective. Best I've worked with."
Goren took a sip of his whiskey and puffed his cigar while John inquired on his latest cases. The only case that has been playing on repeat in his mind was the the video game partners and how much he ached to have his partner by his side. Panic is how he felt without his partner. The desperation he felt, the frustration, and the way he had been set up by the perp was embarrassing. He couldn't communicate that with Bishop. She didn't know. She didn't understand. Eames would.
"I, telling you we would have figured it out quicker with your daughter working the case. Don't get me wrong, Bishop's a fine detective."
"I bet. What was the case?"
"Two partners, video game developers who drifted apart. Jack and Neil. Nothing made sense for without his partner Jack telling him everything was alright. He come to depend on him and his opinion. But, Jack had this new lease on life and that meant leaving him behind. In his desperation to get him back Neil sets him up for murder than clears him." The only opinion that matters.
"Relationships and money two main motives."
"So we've come to see," Goren sipped his Jameson, "Neil looked me up and started using old cases against me."
"That had to been rough but I guarantee it was because you were gaining on him."
Goren nodded. "I usually don't let them in my head."
"Well sometimes you're not on your best game but you got him in the end the video game guy, right?"
"yeah, we got him the night Nathan was born." He remembered receiving the text, 7lbs 8oz
If my partner was doing that to me abandoning me leaving me vulnerable but for her it wasn't a nobody but the sister she loved and the boy he's come adore as well
"Imagine that."
Eames glanced back at her father and partner wondering what they were talking about but assumed they were talking shop since her father love to do so. She grabbed Nathan making cute silly faces at him and blowing raspberries on his belly.
Goren peeked over and smiled. It was worth it for the joy that little boy brings Eames.
"You care for my Alex?"
"Of course. She's my partner."
"She cares for you too. I can see how Alex is around you and I don't know about that stuff they say about you but you are always welcome here. You are a good guy, Bobby."
"Uh Thanks Sir, I appreciate that."
"You're family now, Bobby."
