He found her in in the library, bottles of inks and brushes scattered across the table before her. She was engrossed in her painting of various deep mushrooms.
"Have a moment?"
Rook blinked and looked up at him Lucanis stood across the table from her. She smiled and messaged her hand, "for you? Always."
Lucanis rubbed the back of his neck. He hesitated before continuing, "You were there to witness my new deal with Spite. You should come with us to see it paid in full."
Rook leaned back, clasping her hands in front of her. She playfully asked, "why Lucanis… are you taking me on a date? Interesting."
"Mia luce, any spare moment with you is an added bonus."
They sat at a table in Cafe Petra. Rook took a drink of her cioccolata calda, then asked, "do you think they're wondering why you ordered a drink for the empty chair?"
Lucanis sat back in his chair, "if they are, they won't tell anyone. The Crows own this cafe."
Spite sat in the seat between them, hunched over the mug in front of him, sniffing at the steam raising from it.
Smells like… Lucanis!
Lucanis sighed, "just try it."
Rook was looking at the them. She took a sip from her own mug before asking, "so are you two ok now? Since you gave Illario another chance?"
Lucanis dipped his head, "Yes, but that wasn't our deal. We said we'd save Caterina and we did. Even I believe we did. So there's peace. For the moment, at least."
Rook nodded, "how is your grandmother?"
Lucanis gave her a look! "You have known hers as long as you known me, Rook. She was hewn out of dragon bone. She's pretending not to be upset by Illario's betrayal and my possession. Which means she's making everybody else as miserable as possible. Except Teia. She likes Teia."
"Yes… but everybody likes Teia. She is the only one I have seen make Viago smile on a regular basis." Rook looked at him, "is it strange that I'm enjoying being here with you and your imaginary friend?"
Lucanis shrugged, "it isn't exactly normal"
Rook laughed, "Lucanis… we are Crows. Our lives never have been and never will be normal."
Lucanis had to agree with her. How they lived their lives, how they were forced to live their lives, would not be considered normal by any normal being in Thedas. But, even as a child, he wouldn't consider himself normal even among the fledglings. And now? His eyes drifted to the figure of Spite.
"You try it!"
Lucanis crossed his arm across his chest, looking at the table, briefly lost in thought. "I don't know what it would be like… getting out of the Ossuary. Getting my life back."
Rook's laugh broke him out of his stupor. He looked at her. She was smiling at him, her eyes sparkling with humor, "you mean you didn't dream of getting out and sharing a coffee with your inner demon?"
"And with you. But here we are." Lucanis stood and walked around the table to stand by her. Rook up at him, he face still glowing with a soft smile. He reached and tucked the ever errant strand of hair behind her ear, "Whatever this is… I'll take it."
