"Baby Fae number one and two, you're late," Tamsin drawled, not even looking up from her clipboard as Bo and Kenzi tried to sneak into combat training. "And Kenzi, your pixie dust trail is giving you away. Again."
"It's a genetic condition!" Kenzi protested, brushing sparkles off her leather jacket. "And we're fashionably late. There's a difference."
"The difference is twenty laps," Tamsin replied, finally looking up with her signature smirk. "Though in your case, pixie stick, that's what - about two hundred feet total with those tiny wings?"
Bo bit back a laugh as Kenzi puffed up indignantly, her wings fluttering. "I'll have you know I'm tall for a pixie!"
"Uh-huh." Tamsin's attention shifted to Bo, her expression sharpening. "Dennis, you're with me today. Let's see if we can get those baby succubus powers under control before you turn eighteen and really give me a headache."
Bo's stomach fluttered with nerves. Two more years until her full powers awakened, and she was already struggling to control what little she had. The suppression runes along the gym walls hummed steadily, helping keep everyone's abilities in check during training, but lately even they seemed barely enough.
"Can't wait to see what happens when she hits puberty for real," Kenzi stage-whispered, earning herself an extra ten laps.
The training session started normally enough. Bo worked through her control exercises while other students practiced in their designated areas. Then the new human transfer student walked in.
"Lauren Lewis," Tamsin announced, checking her list. "Welcome to your first observation of Combat Training. Barriers are triple-reinforced around the human section, so try not to look delicious to anyone."
Lauren didn't seem fazed by Tamsin's snark. Instead, she pulled out a notebook and started taking notes with fascinating intensity. Bo was so distracted she nearly missed blocking Tamsin's practice strike.
"Eyes over here, succubus," Tamsin ordered, though her lip twitched. "Save the hormones for after class."
"I wasn't- I mean-" Bo's powers flickered, the suppression runes pulsing in response.
"Ooooh, someone's got a crush!" Kenzi zoomed by on her twentieth lap, trailing sparkles.
"That's forty laps now, pixie!"
"Worth it!"
Bo tried to focus, but her gaze kept drifting to Lauren. The human sat in the observation area, completely absorbed in documenting everything she saw. She didn't flinch when powers flared or barriers shimmered. If anything, she leaned forward with greater interest.
"She's different," Tamsin commented quietly during a water break. "Most humans can barely look at what we do here. She's studying it." There was something almost approving in her tone.
Then the lights flickered. The barriers wavered. Bo felt her powers surge unexpectedly, breaking through the weakened suppression.
"Lock it down, Dennis!" Tamsin moved instantly to contain the situation.
"I'm trying!" Bo's eyes flashed blue as she struggled for control. Through the chaos, she caught Lauren's expression - not fear, but intense fascination.
"Okay, that's enough excitement for one day," Tamsin announced. "Everyone out. Except you, Dennis. We need to talk about what happens when those powers of yours fully awaken."
"I'll wait for you!" Kenzi called, then yelped as Tamsin's glare found her. "Or not! Good luck, bestie!"
Later, the cafeteria's strict hierarchy became apparent as Bo made her entrance. The room was divided into clear territories: High Fae claimed the central tables, elevated slightly above the rest of the space - prime real estate beneath the vaulted ceiling's best lighting. Lesser Fae occupied the surrounding tables in order of status, like a carefully orchestrated orbit around the elite centre. Humans were relegated to the tables near the service area, though the food itself was the same for everyone - one of the few equalizers in Ash Grove Academy.
The moment Bo appeared, a ripple moved through the room. High Fae sat straighter, preening for attention. Lesser Fae quickly averted their eyes or bowed their heads slightly. Humans generally tried to become invisible - all except Lauren, who watched the whole dance with obvious fascination.
"You know," Kenzi said as they claimed their spot at the prime table, her wings throwing off sparkles in the perfect lighting, "your whole intimidating entrance would work better if I wasn't leaving a glitter road behind us."
"Pretty sure you're doing that on purpose," Bo muttered, trying not to look at where Lauren sat in the human section.
"Me? Never! Also, completely unrelated, but look who's coming over."
Lauren had stood up, apparently immune to the social hierarchy that usually kept humans at their designated section. She walked with purpose, that same fascinating confidence from Combat Training.
"Your control exercises were impressive," she said directly to Bo. "I have some theories about power suppression systems if you're interested."
The cafeteria went silent. No one approached the elite Fae table uninvited. Especially not humans.
"I'm not interested in-" Bo started automatically, then made the mistake of meeting Lauren's eyes. "I mean... maybe?"
Kenzi's delighted cackle showered them all in pixie dust.
"Ms. Lewis." Principal Evony's voice cut through the moment like ice. "I believe you'll find the human section more... appropriate for your lunch hour."
Lauren nodded politely but didn't seem intimidated. As she walked away, she glanced back at Bo with a small smile that suggested this wasn't over.
"Well," Kenzi declared, brushing sparkles off her pizza, "this year just got interesting."
Bo couldn't help but agree. Especially since she could have sworn she saw Tamsin hiding a smirk as she passed their table.
