Chapter 5: The War to End all Wars
Chase woke up early the next morning. It was still a little early to wake the rest of the gang so Chase decided to go for a short walk outside the camp. He walked a ways, said hi to some guards and then walked outside the camp. Chase took a deep breath, filling his lungs with the cool mountain air.
Chase then spotted Tracker a ways out from the camp. Chase walked over to him to see what he was doing.
"What you doing Track," Chase asked.
"Setting up a shadow portal," Tracker said.
"A what, a shadow portal, what is that?" Chase asked.
"It's a portal powered by darkness and shadows," Tracker said.
"So what happens if the sun is out?"
"Then It won't work, that's why I'll have to keep the shadows over it," Tracker said.
"How you going to do that, it looks like a big portal?" Chase asked.
"With shadow magic," Tracker said.
Tracker pulled an old leather book out of his pack. The book was a dark black color and very old. Chase read the name off the cover.
"The book of shadows," Chase breathed.
"Ah you know this book," Tracker said.
"I know that it is a book of dark magic, and that the spells contained within its pages have the potential to corrupt any who look upon it, I wonder what it's done to you," Chase said with fear.
"The book has done nothing to me Chase, it takes a person or dog of strong will to read its pages and avoid corruption."
"How did you get that?" Chase asked.
"Don't even ask, you don't want to know, the things I've seen in this world are something's that should never be seen or taught to young pups like you," Tracker said as he starts turning through the pages.
Chase became curious and tried to peek over into the book. Tracker noticed Chase's attempted to see the pages of the book and took a few steps forward. But for Chase the temptation to read the spells in the book of shadows was to strong. Chase tried again, but Tracker side swiped him.
By now the siren lure of the book of shadows was too strong. Chase's eyes turned a solid black as the call of the shadows took control. He growled and lunged at Tracker. The two rolled down the hill! The book of shadows fell out of Trackers paws. Chase scrambled for it its call drawing him to it. Tracker quickly created an energy rope and lassoed Chase's back paws and pulled him back just before he reached the book.
Chase cursed under his breath as Tracker leaped over him and secured the book in his paws. Chase tried one last attempt to get the book. But Tracker whispered some ancient language and froze Chase in place. Tracker circled Chase with anger in his eyes.
"What were you thinking Chase, were you not lessening to me, to what you yourself said? This book will corrupt you; it already made you attack me. Your soul is not strong enough to handle the spells contained in this book," Tracker growled.
Chase then regained control of his body and realized what he just did.
"Oh pup treats, I'm sorry Tracker I didn't mean to do that, I couldn't control myself," Chase apologized.
"Exactly, which is why you'll have to stay frozen until I put this book away," Tracker said turning back to the book of Shadows.
"Yes sir," Chase said.
Tracker turned to the page that he originally needed. He read for a little bit and then put the book away. He unfroze Chase and walked back up the hill to his shadow portal. By now the sun had risen and the camp was bustling with activity. Tracker walked up to his outline of the portal. He pulled an old wooden staff out of his magic pack.
"The shadow staff, were do you find artifacts like this?"Chase asked.
"Like I said before, you don't want to know," Tracker said.
Tracker began to whisper an ancient spell, and the shadow staff turned a solid black color.
"Umbrae procedunt, et tua potestate, accende hanc portam, (Shadows come forth and by your power ignite this portal)" Tracker whispered.
Suddenly the shadows around the staff came alive! They reached out and touched the frame of the portal, which was made of gold wiring and Redstone chunks. There was a sound like that of rushing wind and the portal grew a dark rectangular shape inside the frame.
Chase stood in wonder as did the armies of the world. Even though the sun was out, around the portal was dark with living shadows. Chase reached out and touched the portal. Suddenly his paw disappeared into the darkness, Chase pulled his paw back in fear and it reappeared still attached to his body.
"Behold Chase, this will get the army to the dark forest in no time at all," Tracker said.
"Wow Tracker your truly are amazing," Chase said.
Tracker stood there and held the shadow staff to keep the portal open while Chase organized his army. Within the next two hours all the soldiers had passed through the portal. The army prepared for the fight that was to take place at sundown.
When the time came the army got into their fighting formations. Among the trees of the dark forest the undead gathered by the hundreds of thousands. The sun was the only thing keeping them back, once the sun was gone; the gates of hell were going to be unleashed. The sun slowly began to disappear, and Chase stood up to rally his men.
"Men, this is it, the war has begun, fight till the bitter end men, stand strong, for tonight we dance with the armies of death," Chase yelled.
The army yelled with confidence. Chase turned to Tracker.
"Tracker, do you have anything that could help us win this thing," Chase asked.
"Si, I've set up a force field that will kill anything that passes through it. Although enough undead pushing at once will allow a great number through, so we half to be ready for the couple thousand, maybe a couple hundred thousand that might get through, if that makes sense," Tracker said.
"So what you're saying is that even though we have a shield it won't keep them all out," Chase said.
"Yeah, there will still be a great fight here tonight," Tracker said.
The sun now only had a small sliver of light left. The Zombies growled eager for blood. Chase's soldiers tensed their weapons. After what seemed like an eternity the light disappeared and the hordes of death charged the force field. Wave after wave of zombies fell through the force field. For every 20,000 zombies that died in the force field another 1,000 made it through the force field.
"Ready yourselves men, stand strong and hold nothing back," Chase yelled drawing his sword.
The undead were now only a couple yards away from the front lines.
"Archers now, fire!" Chase yelled.
The archers on the hill tops surrounding the army opened fire on the hordes of undead.
"Now men, ATTACK," Chase yelled leading his soldiers into the onslaught of undead.
The air was suddenly filled with the clash of steel, as many zombies had a partial cover of iron armor. The flash of iron blades and the red flow of undead blood filled the battle field. Chase swung his blade at any monster that dared get close. Chase fought by Skye's side, determined to protect her no matter the cost.
The fighting went on all through the night. By some miracle or sheer luck, Chase's army came out of the fight with only a loss of 950,000 men and 2 million dogs, whereas the undead Army was completely wiped out. Chase and his army took a few days to honor those who gave their lives that night.
The next day the army started to make their way through the dark forest. Tracker insisted that he go in front since his super senses could pick up any dangers far before they reached them. Tracker walked through the dense forest, his senses on high alert. His ears moved back and forth, from left to right. His nose was constantly sniffing the air looking for the smell of danger.
They continued their journey deep into the dark forest. Eventually Trackers keen eyes spotted a stone structure among the thick vegetation. Tracker held up a paw and stopped the army.
"Skye, would it be possible for you to fly up above the trees and see what that stone structure is ahead of us," Tracker said.
"This puppy's gotta fly," Skye said.
Skye burst up through the trees and got a good look at what they were up against. She gasped at what she saw. A massive stone fortress about a mile in diameter, with walls 6 feet thick, and archer towers hundreds of feet in the air. The whole fort was crawling with the undead, millions of monsters guarded every inch off the fort. There was a small clearing big field in front of the fort.
Skye flew back down and told the rest of the pups about the fortress. Hearing about how big it was and how many monsters there were made Chase and Tracker worried. Chase and all the military leaders discussed the best course of action.
"We'd never make it through that wall, it's too thick," king Varg said.
"Every fort has its weakness. We just have to find it," Chase said.
"Good thinking Chase, I'll take Ragnar and Axel to scout out the wall for weaknesses. You guys can set up camp and try and come up with a plan," Tracker said.
"Pawsome plan Track," Chase said.
Tracker, Ragnar, and Axel set out to scout out weaknesses in the wall. But alas, there wasn't any. The walls were made of diabase stone, the hardest of all stone types. After along time of debating the matter, an idea came to Rubbles mind.
"Hey, what about digging under the wall," Rubble said.
"Under the wall? Hey Rubble that might actually work," Chase said.
"I've got about 30 dogs that could dig tunnels pretty quickly," Xavier said.
"The only problem is we've the tunnels would be too small for the men to crawl through. Only a dog could crawl through," King Cyrus said.
"Then here's the plan. All the men will make camp in front of the fortress and engage the undead in combat there. Meanwhile the dog warriors will go all the way to the other side of the fort and dig in. because the men well keep the eyes of the undead and the eyes of death upon the front while 42 million dogs infiltrate it from behind," Chase said.
"I think we've got a good plan now," Marshal said.
"Alright, we've got one shot at this, it's all or nothing. Kings, generals, get your men and dogs ready. We attack at first light," Chase said.
That day was busy preparing for the ambush. The human warriors packed everything up and moved to the field in front of the fortress drawing the attention of the undead army. Meanwhile Chase, Tracker, and all of the canine warriors snuck around. Miraculously they got there without being spotted.
Late that night Xavier had his strongest warriors dig 100 tunnels under the wall. Soon the sun began to rise. Chase and his dogs stood crouched near the tunnel entrances. Suddenly the blast of a horn from the human army could be heard.
"That's the signal, go, let's end this once and for all," Chase growled.
Chase dove into the tunnel and crawled his way to the other side. The canine warriors flooded through the tunnels. About half of the dogs got through when the undead spotted them. But by then it was too late for the armies of death to stop them.
Chase's well trained army started to mow through the undead ranks. Chase howled with courage and determination. Chase fought with strength and valor, taking out 4 undead warriors with each swing of his diamond blade. Wave after wave of undead fell by the edge of the sword.
Suddenly there was a loud Crash of thunder. It was so loud and startling that the fighting practically stopped for a few minutes. Chase looked up to see his arch enemy he had spent years of his life hunting. There in all its horror sitting atop the tallest tower sat the black wolf that started everything.
"Death," Chase hissed.
Then the soldiers, alive and undead alike remembered that they were in the middle of a battle and resumed their fighting. Chase fought on and quickly found Skye and Marshal. The trio headed for the tower entrance. After racing up 20 flights of stairs they burst through the door at the top.
"I knew you would come to fight me someday," Death said looking out over the battle field.
"We've come to end your reign of terror once and for all," Chase growled.
"Ha, that's what they all say," Death laughed.
"What do you mean," Marshal said.
"Look for yourself," Death said pointing to the far wall.
The three pups turned and looked. They were horrified at what they saw, on the wall hung the heads of many legendary warriors.
"Every single one of them thought they could beat me. They came with their armies and their chariots. Every single one of them failed. You are no deferent then them little pups. All you have come to do is donate your heads as more trophies on my wall," Death said turning to face them.
"Well you will find your trophies will not come easily," Chase said his paws glowing neon blue.
"Yeah, it is your head that will hang on our wall this time," Marshal said, drawing his iron blade.
"Ha, ha, come and get it," Death said taking a fighting stance.
Chase was the one to strike first. He sped towards death at the speed of light. Death quickly rolled to the side and dodged his strike. Marshal used his fire paws to heat up his steel blade. He swung at death but was counter attacked by deaths diamond sword. Skye tried to tackle the wolf, but found that his strength matched her own and he fought hard.
The trio all fought Death on top of the tower. Meanwhile down below, Tracker fought by Xavier's side once more. They fought back to back their blades taking out many undead. Xavier laughed gleefully.
"Just like old times, fighting with my old friend again, eh Tracker," Xavier said, slicing at an undead.
"Yeah, oh this brings back memories," Tracker said.
"Good, or bad," Xavier asked.
"Both," Tracker said.
The two friends laughed together. They fought on though the onslaught of undead. Suddenly Trackers ears picked up the sounds of Chase, Skye, and Marshal struggling with death. Tracker looked up and saw that they needed more paws.
"Xavier, we need to help our friends defeat death," Tracker yelled.
"I follow your lead old friend," Xavier said with a smile.
Tracker pulled out his shadow staff and created a portal to the top of the tower. They quickly joined in the fight of the millennium. Death verses 4 mighty pups and one experienced wolf king. Tracker used his shadow portals to teleport Xavier over and around death, slashing him every time.
"ENOUGH," Death yelled.
Death lashed out and grabbed Xavier by the throat. Xavier gagged at deaths tight grip on his neck. Before Tracker could help, death drove his blade into Xavier's chest!
"NO," Tracker screamed.
Death dropped a gasping Xavier on the ground and went to face off with Chase again. Tracker rushed to his friend's side.
"No, no, no, Xavier, it's okay, I can fix this," Tracker panicked franticly searching for a healing potion.
"No, Track, there's not enough time, its okay," Xavier said, coughing blood out of his mouth.
"What, no, I can heal you," Tracker cried.
"My time was close anyway bud, we've…. We've had our Adventures. But know its time it comes to an end."
"No, please Xavier, don't leave me," Tracker bawled.
"Tracker listen to me…. I've got seconds to live. You are now the king of the fang kingdom. Win this battle for me and...And please take care of my kingdom for me," Xavier gasped before falling limp into Trackers paws.
"NO," Tracker howled.
"Xavier," Chase breathed.
Death laughed with pleasure at the sight of Trackers suffering. Tracker breathed heavily, tears falling from his eyes. He suddenly felt anger boiling inside of him. He gripped his shadow staff tight.
"This ends, NOW," Tracker yelled.
Suddenly the clouds grew darker and thunder could be heard across the battle field. Trackers shadow staff turned as dark as night. The shadows flowed into tracker turning his eyes a solid black. His fur turned a dark shadowed version of its normal color as the power of the shadows flowed through him.
Death laughed at Trackers determination to destroy him. He walked up to tracker quietly and drew his blade!
"Tracker look out!" Chase yelled.
But it was too late! Death drove his blade into Trackers back! Death laughed with pleaser while Chase and his friends screamed with horror. Suddenly Trackers eyes flew open and he twisted around and grabbed deaths paw. Death was so stunned that it took no trouble for tracker to wrench the sword out of his paw and throw it off of the tower.
Tracker suddenly disappeared through the floor, and suddenly for the first time since he was created, death actually felt fear. Trackers shadowy paws reached up from the floor of the tower and reached for deaths hinds. Tracker pulled his hinds through the floor and he was suddenly stuck in the floor. Tracker leaped up and ripped the amulet off of deaths neck taking all his power away. Death looked up, like a terrified puppy.
"I…. it can't be," Death whimpered.
"It is, Chase will you do the honors," Tracker growled.
"With pleaser," Chase yelled swinging his diamond blade at deaths neck.
Time seamed to stand still as Deaths vile head fell to the ground. With death dead the clouds pealed back revealing the sun. The sun killed the remaining undead warriors. A great shout of victory was heard all throughout the fortress. Chase took the head of death in his paw and stood on the edge of the tower.
"Victory is ours, the reign of terror is over," Chase howled holding Deaths head high in the air.
There was great celebration that day. The warriors marched home with great rejoicing. But many men and dogs gave their lives to end Deaths tyranny. The next 2 weeks was spent honoring those that died as well as celebrating the end of the war. After the celebrations were over, the pups sat on top of the castle they had taken from death.
"So, what now," Skye said.
"I, I don't know," Chase said.
"I guess we'll just move on with lives now," Everest said.
"But, what does that mean; our whole lives were searching for Death. What does it mean to live normally, what is normal," Chase said.
"Well, I've got a wolf pack to lead," Everest said.
"But I don't want you to leave Evey," Marshal said.
"Then come with me, we'll rule them together," Everest said.
Marshal smiled and gave Everest a kiss.
"What will you do Tracker," Chase asked.
"Xavier made me the next king of the fang kingdom before he died, so that's where I'm going," Tracker said.
"So this is it then. Our Adventures come to an end." Rocky said.
"It was fun while it lasted, now it's time to find our new lives in a world free from deaths tyranny," Zuma said.
"Promise you'll keep in touch," Chase said.
"Of course we will Chase, Mighty Pups forever," Marshal said.
"Mighty pups forever," Chase said with a smile.
The pups went their separate ways that day. Marshal and Everest moved up into Skadi and lead they're wolf pack as well as had some pups of their own. Chase and Skye stayed and ruled the castle they had captured. They also had pups of their own. As for the rest of the pups, Rocky and Zuma went off and built a house/ trading post along the ocean. Rubble went and lived with Ryder at their original home and worked in the mine gathering more riches for themselves. And Tracker went off and led the kingdom of fang.
The pups had accomplished their goal and went off onto their own lives. But they would always be a legend. A legend that is told from generation to generation. The legend of the great and powerful Mighty pups that freed the world from death and established peace for years to come.
And it's done, let me know how I did, I hope you enjoyed this sires. Be sure to read my idea list in a separate story and let me know what you think I should write next, PAW Patrol Fanfiction out :)
