Chapter 24: Jiraiya's Surprise

The forest clearing was quiet except for the faint rustle of leaves, a serene backdrop to the small campfire flickering in the center. Naruto and Jiraiya sat on opposite sides of the fire, the elder sage leaning casually against a log, a familiar mischievous grin lighting his face.

"Alright, kid," Jiraiya began, pulling a notebook from his cloak. "You've been awfully secretive lately. What exactly have you been working on during your training?"

Naruto hesitated, his fingers twitching against the edge of his orange jacket. He glanced away, his voice quieter than usual. "You really want to know?"

"Of course! What kind of mentor would I be if I didn't?" Jiraiya's tone was light, but his eyes held a spark of genuine curiosity.

Taking a deep breath, Naruto stood, brushing dirt off his knees. "Fine, but don't blame me if your jaw hits the ground."

Jiraiya laughed. "Bring it on, kid."

Naruto formed a hand seal, summoning three shadow clones in a puff of smoke. The clones immediately set to work, one sketching seals on the ground while another prepared kunai laced with faint glowing marks. The third began channeling chakra into an intricate symbol etched into a piece of parchment. As the clones moved with precision, Jiraiya leaned back against the log, a nostalgic smile creeping onto his face.

Flashback: Six Months Ago

It reminded him of a particular day months ago when Naruto had first stumbled upon the secret of the Shadow Clone Jutsu.

"You're seriously telling me to learn all this stuff with the same twenty-four hours everyone else has?" Naruto had complained, slamming his hands on the training post. His frustration had been palpable. "Jiraiya-sensei, I need more time!"

Jiraiya had laughed then, a booming sound that seemed to echo through the training field. "Time, huh? Well, you've got the chakra reserves for something most people can't even dream of." He crouched down, drawing a quick sketch of the Shadow Clone hand seal in the dirt. "Here's a trick your old man mastered—Kage Bunshin no Jutsu. It'll let you train in multiple places at once. The clones share your experience, so when they dispel, you'll have everything they learned."

Naruto's eyes had widened in disbelief. "Wait, you mean I can multiply myself and learn faster?"

"Exactly," Jiraiya had said, grinning as he ruffled Naruto's hair. "But don't get cocky. Using this technique burns through chakra like crazy, and if you overdo it, you'll be flat on your back for days."

It had taken Naruto mere hours of trial and error—a display of tenacity and raw talent that left Jiraiya stunned. Within that short time, Naruto managed to summon and control multiple clones, each engaging in a separate task. Half his clones practiced kunai throwing while the others studied fūinjutsu scrolls. By the end of the day, Naruto collapsed from exhaustion, his breath ragged but his grin triumphant as he muttered, "This is going to change everything."

Jiraiya had crouched beside him, his expression a mix of pride and disbelief. "You're something else, kid," he had said softly, ruffling Naruto's hair. "Your dad would be grinning ear to ear if he saw this."

End of Flashback

Now, watching Naruto command his clones with effortless precision, Jiraiya couldn't help but marvel at how far the boy had come. "You've taken what I taught you and turned it into something incredible," he muttered under his breath, his grin widening.

Jiraiya's eyebrow quirked. "Interesting. What's the plan here?"

Naruto smirked faintly but kept his expression subdued. "Just watch."

Within moments, the clearing hummed with an almost imperceptible energy. The clones moved in synchronization, forming seals and throwing the prepared kunai into precise positions around the clearing. As Naruto activated the main seal, a shimmering barrier rose briefly, crackling with wind energy before fading into the night.

"Hōin Fūin," Naruto explained, brushing his hands off. "A containment seal reinforced with wind chakra. It's still a prototype, but it's strong enough to hold back most enemies."

Jiraiya's grin widened, his eyes gleaming with pride and astonishment. "Impressive. And that's just the warm-up, right?"

Naruto nodded, his confidence growing slightly despite his natural reserve. "Next up..." He gestured to another clone, which handed him a kunai marked with a unique seal. With a steady breath, Naruto focused his chakra and disappeared in a flash of light, reappearing a few feet away.

Jiraiya's mouth curved into an impressed grin, though he tried to maintain his composure. "You've been holding out on me," he said with a mock scolding tone. "That's the Mikansei Hiraishin—and you've pushed it a lot further than the last time I saw you use it."

Naruto's pride was evident in the slight smile tugging at his lips. "I've been working on refining the seals, trying to cut down on the chakra cost. It's still not anywhere near perfect, though."

Jiraiya's expression shifted, a mix of awe and genuine pride. "Do you even realize how much progress you've made? The last time you showed me, it was barely functional. Now you're blinking across a battlefield like it's second nature. Kid, if Minato could see this, he'd be proud out of his mind."

Naruto's grin faltered slightly, his gaze lowering. "It's not perfect. And it's not like I'm doing it alone. The scrolls from Danzo, the training with you… it all helps."

Jiraiya's brow furrowed slightly at the mention of Danzo, his expression tightening. After a moment, he spoke, his tone calm but firm. "Naruto, I've got to ask. What exactly do you think about Danzo?"

Naruto blinked, surprised by the sudden shift in topic. "Danzo? I mean, he's been a big help. If it weren't for him, I wouldn't have gotten access to my clan's scrolls. And he's taught me a lot about strategy and sealing techniques. Sure, he's strict, but he's always told me it's for the village. He's not just a teacher—he's someone who believes in me. When I struggled with handling too many tasks, he didn't just point out my mistakes—he sat with me and taught me how to manage them. And when I started doubting myself, he reminded me that strength isn't just about raw power, but control and patience. He's tough, yeah, but I think it's because he sees something in me."

Jiraiya frowned, his gaze drifting to the flickering campfire. "And you don't think his methods are a little... extreme?"

Naruto shrugged, his expression thoughtful. "Maybe, but he's never lied to me. He's straightforward about what he wants. He believes in protecting Konoha no matter what. Honestly, I think he's just doing what he thinks is right. Even if it's not always... nice."

Jiraiya leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Kid, there's a difference between protecting the village and controlling it. Danzo's always been about control, about using people as tools to achieve his goals. Don't let him turn you into one of those tools."

Naruto's gaze hardened slightly, his voice steady. "I'm not a tool. Danzo's taught me to think ahead, to be prepared. But he's never treated me like a puppet, never tried to control me. He's helped me grow stronger and made me see things differently, but he's always left the decisions to me. And I'm grateful for that. I know he can be harsh, but I think it's because he really believes in me. I'm not blind, Jiraiya-sensei. I know who I am and what I'm fighting for.""

Jiraiya studied him for a long moment, then sighed, a faint smile tugging at his lips. "Fair enough, kid. Just promise me you'll keep your eyes open. Don't lose sight of who you are or the people who care about you."

Naruto nodded, his expression softening. "I won't. Thanks, Jiraiya-sensei."

The two spent the rest of the evening refining Naruto's techniques. Despite Naruto's growing comfort with Jiraiya, he often fell silent, his thoughtful nature steering him to listen more than speak. At one point, as Naruto concentrated on a complex seal, the lines wavered slightly under his brush.

"Careful there, kid," Jiraiya teased, leaning back with an exaggerated grin. "Looks like someone still needs to work on their chakra control."

Naruto groaned, rolling his eyes. "I'm doing fine, Pervy Sage. I'm not wasting energy like I used to." His tone carried a rare note of calm self-assurance, reflecting his evolving confidence.

Jiraiya chuckled, leaning forward with a mock stern expression. "Sure, sure, Mr. Efficient. But you're still using twice the chakra you need for those seals. At this rate, you'll be leading missions… with an empty tank."

Naruto huffed softly, but his lips twitched in a small smile. "Well, maybe I'll perfect that before you finish that book of yours," he retorted with a sly glance at Jiraiya's ever-present notebook.

Jiraiya laughed, ruffling Naruto's hair. "Touché, kid. But remember, no shortcuts. Precision and control will carry you further than brute strength ever will."

Naruto nodded, his small smile lingering. As the fire burned low, the clearing filled with the quiet hum of chakra and the faint laughter of teacher and student, their bond growing stronger with each passing moment.
