Episode 7: The First Real Mission
The village of Konoha was calm under the morning sun, but the tension within the Hokage's office was palpable as Team 7 stood before Hiruzen Sarutobi. Naruto's usual boisterous energy filled the room as he stood front and center, bouncing on his heels.
"Come on, Old Man! We're ready for something big!" Naruto exclaimed, his fists clenched. "No more cats or packages—we want a mission that's actually worthy of us!"
Sakura groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose. "Naruto, don't call the Hokage 'Old Man.'"
Sasuke stood silently, his arms crossed, his dark eyes sharp and calculating as they flicked between the Hokage and Kakashi. Even he seemed more interested than usual in what the Third Hokage might assign.
Hiruzen chuckled softly, taking a long draw from his pipe. "So, you're ready for something more challenging, Naruto?"
"You bet I am!" Naruto declared, puffing out his chest. "Give us something dangerous! Exciting! Something that'll make our names rattle around the world!"
Kakashi leaned against the wall, his usual aloofness firmly in place. "Careful what you wish for, Naruto. You just might get it."
The Mission Briefing
Hiruzen reached into a stack of mission scrolls, pulling out one marked with a modest seal. He unrolled it slowly, his expression calm yet serious. "This mission is a C-rank request. It's a protection mission."
Naruto's eyes lit up. "Protection? Like, protecting a VIP? That's awesome!"
Sakura raised a hand hesitantly. "Um, Hokage-sama, isn't that a little advanced for us? We've only been doing D-rank missions until now…"
Hiruzen nodded. "Normally, yes. But the client specifically requested a team, and I believe this will be a valuable experience for you. Your task is to escort a bridge builder from our village to his home in the Land of Waves."
"A bridge builder?" Naruto repeated, his excitement dimming slightly. "That doesn't sound dangerous."
"Escort missions can be full of surprises," Kakashi said, his tone unreadable. "Let's see how you handle it."
The door behind them opened, and a scruffy-looking man stumbled in. He wore a tattered cloak, his hair graying and his nose red from what was clearly excessive drinking. A large jug of sake dangled from his hand.
"This is Tazuna," Hiruzen explained, gesturing toward the man. "He's the bridge builder you'll be protecting."
Tazuna squinted at the team, his face twisted in a skeptical frown. "These brats are supposed to protect me? They don't look like much. Especially the loud one in the hoodie."
Naruto bristled, pointing a finger at Tazuna. "Hey! I'm not just 'the loud one'—I'm the future Hokage!"
Tazuna snorted. "Sure, kid. And I'm the Daimyo of Fire Country."
Naruto growled, but Kakashi placed a hand on his shoulder. "Calm down, Naruto. You'll have plenty of time to prove yourself."
Hiruzen handed Kakashi the mission scroll. "You'll depart immediately. Be on your guard; the Land of Waves has been unstable as of late."
Departing Konoha
The team left the gates of Konoha with Tazuna trailing behind them. The road was peaceful at first, with birds chirping in the distance and the occasional rustling of leaves in the trees.
Naruto, of course, couldn't stay quiet for long. "So, Tazuna, why do you need us to protect you anyway? You scared someone's gonna bone-nap you?"
Sakura sighed. "Naruto, you've got to stop with the skeleton puns. It's not funny anymore."
"Speak for yourself," Naruto retorted. "You just don't appreciate my rib-tickling sense of humor."
Tazuna groaned. "Why me? Why did I get stuck with the loudmouth?"
Sasuke stayed silent, his sharp eyes scanning their surroundings. Kakashi walked lazily behind the group, his book open as if he weren't paying attention, but Naruto had noticed the subtle shifts in his gaze, the way he occasionally glanced toward the treetops.
Something was bothering Kakashi, though he didn't say it outright.
The Ambush
As the group passed through a shaded section of the road, the air grew unnervingly still. Even Naruto, despite his constant chatter, felt the change in the atmosphere. His steps slowed, and his instincts tingled—a faint hum resonating in his chest. His left eye flickered blue for a split second.
Suddenly, the ground beneath them erupted as two figures leapt out from the shadows, their faces obscured by breathing masks. Chains glinted in the sunlight as they wrapped around Kakashi in an instant.
"Kakashi-sensei!" Sakura screamed as the chains tightened.
"One down," one of the masked attackers growled. "Now for the rest."
The attackers turned toward the genin, their movements fluid and deadly. Naruto froze for a split second, the reality of an actual fight hitting him harder than he expected. Sasuke reacted first, hurling a kunai at one of the attackers. The man dodged, but the move gave Sasuke enough time to position himself in front of Tazuna.
"Stay behind me," Sasuke commanded coldly.
Sakura trembled, clutching her kunai tightly, while Naruto shook himself out of his daze. "Get ready to face the bone squad!" he shouted, summoning his skeletal clones.
The attackers rushed forward, their chains swinging wildly. Sasuke deflected one with his kunai, while Naruto's clones tackled the other, their clumsy movements just enough to disrupt the attack. The two masked men regrouped, preparing for another assault.
But before they could act, Kakashi reappeared, his body seemingly melting out of the ground. "You were saying?" he asked, his voice calm as he delivered a swift blow to one of the attackers, sending him sprawling.
The second attacker hesitated, his confidence clearly shaken. In a blur, Kakashi was behind him, a kunai pressed to his throat. "Surrender," Kakashi said, his tone low and deadly.
The man dropped his weapon, and the fight was over as quickly as it had begun.
The Aftermath
As Kakashi tied up the attackers, Naruto panted heavily, his clones flickering out of existence. "What… just happened?"
"That," Kakashi said, his voice calm but firm, "was an ambush. A real one."
Sakura clutched her chest, her hands trembling. "They were trying to kill us…"
Sasuke remained stoic, though his grip on his kunai was tight. "Who sent them?"
Kakashi's single eye narrowed as he glanced at Tazuna. "That's a good question."
Tazuna avoided their gazes, scratching the back of his head awkwardly. "Well… I might've left out a few details."
Naruto groaned. "You've got to be kidding me."
As the team regrouped and prepared to move forward, the reality of their mission began to sink in. This wasn't a simple escort job. This was something far more dangerous.
Naruto clenched his fists, a determined glint in his eye. "No matter what, we're getting you to the Land of Waves. We've got your back."
Kakashi glanced at Naruto, his expression unreadable. "Let's hope your confidence holds, Naruto. Things are only going to get harder from here."
The road ahead was fraught with danger, but Team 7 pressed on, their bond—and their resolve—stronger than ever.
