Chapter 14: [Part 1] It's not the face that makes someone a monster.

Naruto: ...It's the choices they make with their lives.
Part 1 of 2.

.

Nari doesn't know if he'll be happy or mad about his shinobi career this time.

Everything is weird and different.

Most of his missions from their future-past were all about chasing Sasuke or defeating the Akatsuki while he remained genin. He was busy surviving from getting captured, and at the same time - suppressing the angry Kyuubi.

Now, he is a chuunin at age eight, whose team rotates with different renowned jounins as mission captains. He's being sent to real missions that fit his skills; impersonation, traps and trickery. His teammates used his chatty behavior to easily gather information and maneuver people. His fighting arsenal, the seals and shadow clones, were being explored and utilized creatively.

He realized he is indeed suited for infiltration.

No teammate to chase, no crazy organization to hunt and kill. Just pure missions of sneaking in, running, and baiting. And a side quest to hunt down a geezer and his plants.

It feels surreal, dattebayo!

Ero-sennin should watch out, or he'll replace him as spymaster in no time.

But...

Jiji deployed them again immediately after their last mission. They were roughly woken up by the Anbu and dragged them to the Hokage office to receive another.

The 'rest' Jiji promised them was never followed.

No matter how enthusiastic he is to be doing shinobi things and hunt their real enemy, he too can be pissed if they were sent away after nine hours since they've arrived back in Konoha. One hour spent reporting to the Hokage and medical check up, one hour of socializing and panicking on that beef barbecue dinner, another one hour spent on finding a missing comrade – who might be a fellow time traveler too, two hours of training with his new sensei, one hour of reading scrolls and lectures they said he should've learned in the Academy, and just three hours of sleep. He's too tired. The sun hadn't risen when they left the gates.

He never has set foot to Ichiraku's yet!

Did Jiji forget that he also has other shinobis? Did they lack manpower at this time?

If they have limited people to use, why are they pushing to participate in the war?

He will never understand the necessity of battling each other when the Fourth Shinobi War showed they can all get along.

He returned his attention to the present.

Now, their team is traveling towards Yugakure with half-lidded eyes. They were running for five hours non-stop. What's more, they were accompanied by the Jounin Commander himself.

It's Shuka's turn to endure the pain of seeing and talking with his father.

Their last mission with Minato was slightly confusing and painful for him. Seeing his dead father, alive and energetic at this time, made him want to hug and cry on his shoulders.

Why can't we just tell tou-chan the truth?! He's an ally, 'ttebayo!

But his fellow time traveler has been silent since they were woken up from their sleep. No angry reaction, no sarcastic remarks, no groaning or anything that he could clue in on what his new teammate was thinking.

Is his 'cousin' even awake?

"We can rest here for a while before we reach the borders.", the Jounin Commander ordered, scanning the forest. "Rest, then eat. We will pass through the Valley of End to walk towards the Land of Rice Fields. From there on, you'll sneak into Yugakure. I'll give you an hour for everything then we will discuss other details of the mission."

The Jounin Commander left them to patrol the area and find their border troops. Shuka just dropped dead in the ground to sleep, not caring or unpacking anything. He didn't even bother scolding his new teammate, he understood. Their new sensei pushed his new teammate too far last evening, he thought his friend will finally break.

Shuka doesn't have the luxury of having vast chakra resource like him. Nari is thankful for having Uzumaki genes.

"Can I sleep first, Nari?", their third teammate asked, sleepily blinked at him. His eye-bags have bags itself. The poor kid. "I slept late last night... Fugaku-sama insisted training my sharingan. I didn't predict we will be sent away immediately... Could you wake me up after 20 minutes so you can sleep too?"

"Just sleep, Shisui. Shikaku-taichou will be back here shortly. He did say we all need to rest.", he smiled gently to his youngest teammate. "We only have one hour. We need to recharge our energy; we still have a long journey ahead of us."

"Thanks."

"No problem. Close your eyes now."

"Close your eyes too, Naruto. Or should I call you Nari from now on?", the Yin-Kurama stirred inside him.

"Call me Nari... so we could get used to it...", he whispered internally. His eyelids are also heavy.

"Nari. Just sleep. I'll watch the area for you. The young deer of yours thrown warning tags before he collapsed. And the big deer also set up some traps and silencing seals before he left.", the tailed beast inside him assured him. "There's no one else around."

Upon hearing this, he didn't resist anymore the pull of nothingness.

He can't remember if he thanked his internal companion. He finally closed his eyes.

.

.

When they woke up, the Jounin Commander distributed some beef jerkies and soldier pills for them to chew and swallow. Their mission captain might've taken a pity on them and let them sleep for two more hours. Nari felt energized, ready to face their new mission on another land.

"Change your clothes now.", the Jounin Commander ordered, unsealing his own pack. "What disguises will you play this time?"

"The usual. Orphans.", Shuka shrugged his shoulders while unsealing their clothes, face impassive. His current teammate is more alive than what he looked hours ago. "You know, we are experts on playing those."

"Oh?", the Jounin commander raised his eyebrow and lazily smirked. "Are you saying you are just playing orphans since you arrived in Konoha?"

Nari chose to busied himself changing clothes, refusing to react while his 'cousin' snorted.

"Well, if my parents have played dead, I'll be happier.", Shuka untied his robes and put a dirty shirt on. Nari saw their mission captain eyed their body tattoos when they unrobed. "Unfortunately, they're blown to bits and we're not. So, we are now orphans playing orphans."

His 'cousin' now proceeded in helping their third teammate change his clothes. But the Jounin Commander is not yet finished interrogating them.

"You said you were being hunted by Kiri-nins. Were your parents shinobi? What are those tattoos for? Are they seals?"

"No.", Shuka denied. "My father is a pharmacist. Nari's parents are skilled calligraphers. These tattoos are proof of allegiance to our summons. Orochimaru-sensei shared them with us."

"I see. Orochimaru indeed have snake summons. But I didn't know he also had fox summons? Hmmm...", the Jounin Commander hummed but continued to prod on. "Your parents were hunted because of medicines and calligraphy?"

"My father does research about medicines. Maybe he is also a healer, but I'm not really sure. He died four years ago.", his 'cousin' quietly replied. "According to my father, Nari's parents both died the day he was born. I didn't know them personally since we were born just two weeks apart. I don't know the circumstances why they were also killed."

"How about your mother?"

"My mother died on the same day my father perished."

Nari wants to applaud and hug Shuka for saying everything with a straight face. He knew how his friend reacted when Asuma-sensei was killed by the Akatsuki, but they have time to grieve him. When they lost Shikaku-ochan, Inoichi-ochan and Neji in the war, they didn't have time to process everything. His friend and Ino were needed to immediately step up to their fathers' roles.

The grief of not knowing your parents' love, and the grief of experiencing and losing it, are both excruciating. But he knew the difference. He understood that watching himself and Sasuke.

He didn't desire revenge, because he doesn't have anything to hold on to. His parents died before he knew the concept of love. Sasuke desired it. He lost the love he once had.

Love is the root cause of hate.

A cycle.

A circle that love can also end.

He placed his hand on his friend's shoulder as a gesture of support. Shisui stood between them and stared at the Jounin Commander too.

"I see.", their mission captain sadly looked at them back and forth.

Shuka cleared his throat to change the depressing topic. "What are the other details of our mission, taichou?"

The Jounin Commander nodded and changed his demeanor.

"We are to survey the Land of Rice Fields while we run towards the Land of Hot Water. I'll be posing as your father. Before we reach the border between the two countries, a stationed Anbu there will act as a mercenary to 'kill' me, thus making you flee and call for help towards Yugakure. Remember the station where I'll be 'killed'. It's one of our hidden camps. You can go there if you were caught before you reach the target village. Once you enter Yugakure, find out if they allied themselves with Kumogakure. If they did, sabotage the agreement and their supplies, then escape towards Take no Mura. Hide there and send us a report. Wait for further instructions."

The Jounin Commander changed his outfit and untied his hair.

"What if we are still pursued in Take no Mura?", Shuka asked.

Their mission captain ruffled his own hair and tied a white cloth on his forehead. "Flee to the south coast of that village, but do not enter Konoha borders. We also have a hidden station there. Give the code I will give you. You, Shuka, will be the mission captain once I 'died'."

They all nodded and tightened their things. Nari put some dirt on their face and arms. Shuka is removing the tags and seals in their camp, while Shisui ruffled their hairs too to enhance their look.

"Remember, whatever happens, don't make them detect you as Konohan shinobi."

"Roger, Shikaku-taichou!"

"Call me 'otou-san' for this mission.", their Jounin Commander put Shisui on his back, then he held their hands. Nari bit his cheek to hold himself from laughing at his 'cousin'. Shuka maintained his poker face.

"We're ready, otou-san!", they answered in unison.

"Let's go!"

.

.

In Nari's opinion, everything went well.

They have surveyed the Land of Rice Fields without any problems. Their otou-san 'died' protecting them, and they ran off crying around the Land of Hot Water until they reached Yugakure. They have sneaked in, found out that there's indeed an agreement and destroyed the supplies, and had successfully escaped the target village.

Nari was feeling good about their performance. They got two good weeks of smooth operations with no hassles. Shuka might be lazy at times, but his strategies as a team leader are efficient and effective. His friend has a good track record, excluding the A-rank turned disastrous S-rank retrieval mission. This luck didn't occur when he was in Team 7 in their future-past.

Until they met some Kumo-nins.

That's when it all went to shits.

Good thing Shuka thought of altering their disguise again. They now wore brown hair with common civilian faces, and changed their clothes. They were just detected as shinobis when their youngest teammate reacted after seeing a Kumo-nin weave some signs.

Well, habits can't die fast. That error is forgivable.

So, they flee as per ordered.

Then they saw Killer Bee with red strands of hair.

He and Shuka exchanged glances of panic and confusion.

Oh, Kami! Bee no occhan!

Him too?!

Who else have gone back?!

Killer Bee and other Kumo-nins attacked them without hesitance.

He needed his fellow jinchuriki to know that they time traveled too!

How can we communicate without getting caught?!

"Nari, try connecting your fist with the Hachibi jinchuriki. That would open our communication. Do it quickly and run!", the Yin-Kurama ordered.

"That's difficult, Kurama! We are playing civilians, remember?!", he whined internally while running.

"Tsk! The moment you were suspected to be shinobis is the time to stop acting like idiots.", the tailed beast inside him complained back. "But since you want to insist on playing civilians, try holding a body part of that jinchuriki and flowed some of your chakra into him. That should be easy. Be quick on your feet, that's the least you could do."

"Is that a challenge?!"

"Quit playing, Nari! Do what's being asked!"

"Okay! Okay! Fine! I'll do it! Don't be so grumpy, 'ttebayo!"

He signaled Shuka and Shisui to play their part. His second mission captain acted scared and stumbled in the ground. Their youngest teammate screamed in fear as he acted to pull Shuka from the ground. Nari hugged his teammates.

"How dare you scums attack helpless civilians like us!", he turned towards the Kumo-nin and growled while trembling his body. He extended his hands protectively in front of his other teammates.

"Civilians?! Or spies?!", a long-haired male shinobi sneered. "You might've fooled shinobis of Yugakure, but not us!"

"What are you talking about?!", Shuka childishly demanded, gripping Nari's shirt.

"Why are you running when you saw us, hmm?", the Kumo-nin with spiky hair asked instead.

"You look scary! Why wouldn't a person run if they saw you?!"

"Only a guilty child will run if they were caught lying!", another Kumo-nin laughed at them, grabbing their things.

Their youngest teammate cried. "Hey! That's mine!"

"It's ours now!", the Kumo-nin with spiky hair waved Shisui's bag and smirked. "Or you can have it back if you told me what village are you affiliated with."

"What village is he talking about, nii-san?!", Shisui sobbed and gripped his shirt too. "Is he talking about the hometown of the shinobi that killed our father?! We did nothing wrong!"

"Hush now. They'll kill us if you anger them more.", Shuka hugged their youngest teammate tighter. Nari saw some pieces of paper floating in the air.

When did Shuka have time to learn Konan's jutsu?

He didn't see his friend use it during their training with their new sensei.

But he can feel his blood excitedly coursing through his veins. He blinked to signal Shuka that he is ready.

Papers flew towards the Kumo-nins. All enemy shinobi collapsed.

Nari is sure those papers were paralytic and sleeping tags.

He really likes Shuka as a teammate and mission captain.

Seeing that all were incapacitated, he quickly pushed his hands into Killer Bee's arms and flowed Kurama's chakra. He looked directly in his fellow jinchuriki's eyes.

"Bee no occhan! Don't talk, just listen! I don't have much time!", he talked rapidly through the jinchuriki shared mindscape. Killer Bee met his eyes, acknowledging internally that he was listening. "This is Uzumaki Naruto, dattebayo! I time traveled like you! You also have red strands of hair! Who else traveled with you? I have other people that traveled with me! I'm sorry I need to knock you out to keep our identity! I exchanged chakra with Gyuki! We will talk later about everything in our mindscape! We need to run!"

Then he pressed more sleeping tags on his fellow jinchuriki.

"Let's run while they can't move!", Shuka pulling his and Shisui's hand.

"Good job, Nari!", the tailed beast inside him praised. "Run faster before they could alert more comrades! I can sense the others from the northwest. You and your teammates need to speed up! The southeast has no malicious chakra, you can hide there!"

"There!", he pointed in the direction Yin-Kurama told him. "Let's go there and hide!"

"Nari! Make some clones to act as decoys! Now!"

"Roger!"

.

.

When they reached Take no Mura, a fellow chuunin gave them another mission scroll.

Nari wanted to stomp his foot and throw the scroll back to the messenger-nin.

Because what the hell?!

Are they the only team Jiji can use to infiltrate countries and survey lands?!

What happened to the Anbu that do these jobs?!

His fellow time traveler also groaned and rolled his eyes. Even their youngest teammate sighed irritably.

He wanted to demand a week's worth of ramen at this point. When they get to Konoha, he will seal their house and even hide Shisui in their room. No Anbu or anyone, including the Hokage, could drag their asses to missions.

What really happened to the promise of rest every after mission, 'ttebayo?!

The messenger-nin smiled apologetically when he saw their annoyed faces.

"So... where is our next assignment?", Shuka spoke first when he and Shisui refused to talk.

"Shimogakure."

They all sighed in unison.

To borrow his friend's catchphrase, this is so troublesome!

"Are we the only team sent to roam around countries? I never knew a team that got treated like this!", Shisui angrily complained, unconsciously flaring his sharingan.

"We just escaped from some Kumo-nins to get here, then you're saying we need to cross those areas again to go to that village?!", Nari growled in frustration. "Did you know what we went through to reach here?!"

"We have no proper clothes and supplies for the Land of Frost.", Shuka crossed his arms in his chest, letting out some of his irritation. "We will die of hypothermia there! In case you can't see clearly, we are just kids!"

"Uh... about that...", the messenger-nin grimaced, maybe regretting that he accepted the task to pass them the Hokage's message. The chuunin in front of them hesitantly said his next words as they surrounded him. "Sandaime-sama said... you are all smart... and he was impressed from your performance on your last mission... Err... he said... he is sure you'll think of a way how you can survive…?"

Shuka scoffed in disbelief, Shisui gripped his hair, and Nari put his hands on his face. He wanted to scream and punched the Hokage, like how he used to do when he's frustrated at his Jiji.

The poor messenger-nin stepped back from the dark aura they were emitting.

"Err... well...", the messenger-nin waved his hands as if to defend himself from their team. "Sandaime-sama said the jounin stationed there can give you the supplies you need when you reach that village."

"And who is this jounin he stationed there?", their youngest teammate inquired.

The messenger-nin looked at him and Shuka. Nari feels he won't like the answer.

"Orochimaru-sama."

His fellow time traveler drooped down his shoulders in defeat. Nari finally let out his angry scream.

"Arggghhhh!"

They're doomed.

"Why?!"

.

.

"Are your feet turned to lead that it took three days for you to get here?", Orochimaru angrily hissed when they finally found the hidden camp placed in the Land of Frost. "You said you're used to running?"

All the members of Team 13 glared at the Snake Sannin.

They ran non-stop to reach this location. They were cold, hungry, tired and sleep deprived, and this is how they were rewarded?

Their new sensei is gradually infuriating as the weeks progress. But they can't voice out their complaints. Nari can't even move his mouth. Their jaws must have been frozen.

"Orochimaru, don't be too harsh on them. Look at the chattering teeth of these poor kids!", a kunoichi appeared beside their new sensei. She gave them a pitying look and immediately pushed them inside the tent. "And besides, they're just on time."

The kunoichi wrapped them in thick blankets and gave them hot soup. She has fangs and tattoos on her face. Nari can't remember where he saw her in the future-past, so he tilted his head. She really looked familiar. The kunoichi got his silent question and barked a laugh.

"Ah... You don't know me yet, right? Your sensei must be too busy to introduce people in Konoha."

He blinked and frowned. "Uhmm... no, Oba-san. Oro-sensei doesn't have the opportunity to tour us in his hometown. Hokage-sama deployed us immediately for missions."

"Oba-san?"

His new teammates facepalmed and refused to help him. The brats!

"Ah! Uhmm... I-"

The kunoichi cackled loudly, like she didn't care they were in an enemy territory. "I'm Inuzuka Tsume. Just call me Tsume."

"Hello Tsume-san, we are Team 13.", they greeted in unison.

"Just Tsume."

"Tsume-san.", the Uchiha in their team politely insisted. "We can't just disrespect a clan leader."

"Ah... the Uchiha and their stubborn stand on formalities.", the Inuzuka head rolled her eyes and sighed. "Fine. Call me Tsume-san. Now, sip that soup to heat your bodies, or it will get cold too. I can't believe the Sandaime sent you here without any supplies. What is he thinking?!"

Nari wanted to rehash the words they were given, but he was too tired to speak. He learned to pick his battles carefully and chose not to comment.

"Unlike my stupid apprentices, I packed winter clothes.", their sensei sneered. "And I also have extra brain cells to pack theirs."

"Whatever.", Shuka decided to fight back to heat his brain and rolled his eyes.

"Here.", the Snake Sannin glared and tossed a storage scroll to his 'cousin'. "Change before I throw your ungrateful hide outside. You should be thankful I cared. Give the other clothes to your teammates. I'll give the full details of your new mission when you're finished."

They gulped the rest of their soup and changed quickly.

Another shinobi entered the tent. He has pale eyes like Hinata and Neji. Once they changed clothes, they all settled down and wrapped themselves again in thick blankets. The clothes given to them by Oro-sensei were warm. Nari already forgotten his ire on his new sensei.

Why is this place so cold, 'ttebayo?!

"I'll introduce first our other comrade for this mission.", the Inuzuka Head gestured her hand towards the other shinobi. "This is Hyuuga Hizashi. He has Byakugan that could help us in our task."

Hyuuga... Hizashi?

Is this Neji's father? The younger twin of Hinata's father?

The Snake Sannin gave his 'cousin' another scroll.

"I will be the captain for this mission. These will be your supplies: food, water, soldier pills, and three sets of disguises.", their new sensei began and unfolded a map. He pointed an area to the east from their current location. "You will enter Shimogakure to steal agreement scrolls while we, the adults, destroy their weaponry. Then you have to run until you reach the mountains that protect the Land of Lightning. You are to set up barrier seals and explosion tags on all borders between Land of Frost and Land of Lightning. Put them on areas where they can't find it. Make it quick. We will redirect their shinobi on other areas so you can do your task without unnecessary fighting. If someone saw you, don't kill them. Shisui can put them in genjutsu. He will serve as the main fighter while the two of you do the main task."

Nari blinked and frowned. He scratched his head. Maybe he heard it wrong.

"All borders, sensei? You mean, we have to put seals and tags on the whole border?"

"Yes."

Silence.

All three of them just gaped at the adults.

"Before you could throw your complaints to me", the Snake Sannin warned when Nari took a deep breath to rant, "Tsume and her ninken Kuromaru will snuff out the supply route of Kumogakure, Hizashi will be our only lookout – he will detect if there are enemy shinobis nearby, and I will be the bait to divert the shinobis to clear your way. Sandaime-sama, Danzo-sama and the Jounin Commander felt that sending six people are enough to accomplish this mission, so we need to compromise. This is the best option we could do. Give your grievances to the Hokage later if we're still alive."

They all sighed in defeat.

"To make sure we can really secure that border, we will expand our coverage.", their new sensei traced lines on the map. "Ten kilometers each from the border end point in the northern and southern part of Land of Lightning. Tomorrow we will start in the south, as it is near our camp. But the shinobis stationed here and the troops stationed in the north will not move unless we really need them. We also have a hidden camp in the north. The time frame for this task is seven days. Are we clear?"

"Yes, taichou!", they responded and readied themselves to stand up, but their mission captain halted them quickly.

"I'm not done yet. We need to discuss what will happen afterwards."

"There's more?", Shisui widened his eyes.

"Yes, unfortunately.", the Snake Sannin smirked. Nari felt his heart sink from seeing his sensei's eerie smile. "If we accomplished this task without any hindrance, Tsume, Hizashi and I will enter the Land of Lightning and infiltrate Kumogakure."

Nari gasped in surprise.

What?!

Why?!

As if his new sensei have read his mind, he answered his silent question. "The Sandaime and his council wants your team to do it since your infiltration record is impressive, but I strongly objected. Kumogakure is one of the five powerful shinobi villages, underestimating them could lead to problems. This should be a job for Anbu or veteran jounins like us. So, your team will run to the west until you reach Takigakure instead. Wait for further instructions there."

"When you say further instructions, do you mean another mission?", Shuka narrowed his eyes.

"Don't ask questions you already know the answer, Shuka.", their new sensei glared at his teammate. "And since you are very brave in talking back at your mission captain, you'll be my second-in command. You'll lead your team until you arrive in Takigakure. Once you receive another mission, give the leadership reins to Shisui. I think you and Nari will be busy in Takigakure."

"Right…"

Nari wants to cry.

It's been seventeen days since we left Konoha!

When will I taste ramen again?!

The Snake Sannin bit his finger and weaved summoning signs. Small snakes have appeared and climbed inside their bodies. Then their sensei produced another set of scrolls.

Is his new sensei brought their whole house with him?

"I don't want you to waste time idling during off time, so you will also read these scrolls. Nari – chakra control exercises for you. Just because you know some seals, you'll not practice other things. Shuka – another chakra enhancement exercises for you because you still sucked at them. Do it or you'll be useless. I don't want a child of mine to die because of irresponsibility. Limited chakra is a fixable problem, not an excuse.", the Snake Sannin taunted his 'cousin'.

Nari thinks his new sensei won't stop nagging about their chakra issues until he sees results that are excellent in his standards.

Then his new sensei turned to their youngest teammate. "Shisui, since you are with my apprentices, you will also learn from me while we are on this mission. This is my personal Kenjutsu scrolls. I expect you to study it thoroughly. I'll spar with you from time to time until we finish this mission."

Shisui's face lit up, pleased that a Sannin offered some free training. He and Shuka winced and gave pitying looks at their youngest teammate.

"Is it bad that I want Shisui to know our experience first hand?", he whispered to his friend through gritted teeth.

"No.", Shuka smiled evilly. "We can call this team bonding."

He resisted laughing out loud, but his shoulders shook.

"What are you two whispering about?", Shisui narrowed his eyes to them.

Nari clapped his youngest teammate's shoulder and smiled foxily. "Nothing! We're glad we'll grow stronger together!"

"What are you waiting for?! Start reading and practicing!", the Snake Sannin growled when he saw his team still talking with each other two jounins quickly ran outside to avoid the ire of their mission captain, leaving them kids face it. "I said not to waste time!"

Their team hastily opened their scrolls to start studying.

"Yes, taichou!"

Notes:

This is a long chapter so I divided it into two parts. :D

Let Nari eat his ramen! Use other shinobi, Hiruzen! Or Naruto will have another long chapter!

Shuka didn't technically lie about their parents' occupations.

Let's familiarize ourselves in Shinobi world geography! Small Villages also matters!

The Land of Rice Fields (aka Land of Rice Paddies) existed before Orochimaru conquered it and renamed it to Land of Sound.

Yugakure (Hidden Steam Village) is located in the Land of Hot Water. This is the hometown of Hidan.

Take no Mura (Bamboo Village) is located in the eastern part of Land of Hot Water. It's a poor village forgotten by its land due to its proximity to Land of Whirlpool and Land of Water.

Shimogakure (Hidden Frost Village) is located in the Land of Frost. This country is between Land of Lightning and Land of Hot Water. Do not confuse this with Land of Snow and Yukigakure (Hidden Snow Village), nor with Tetsu no Kuni (Land of Iron, where the Samurai resides). The Five Kage Summit and Shinobi Union took place in Tetsu no Kuni. Just because they all have icy climate, you'll interchange them.

Takigakure (Hidden Waterfall Village) is the hometown of Kakuzu and Fuu (seven-tailed beast jinchuriki).
