Episode 8: The Shadow of the Mist

The sun dipped lower in the sky as Team 7 continued their journey along the winding road to the Land of Waves. The earlier ambush had left everyone on edge, even Naruto, whose usual energy had been subdued into focused determination. Tazuna trudged behind them, occasionally casting guilty glances at the shinobi.

Naruto glanced over his shoulder at their client, scowling. "Hey, old man! You mind explaining why a couple of chain-wielding psychos were after you? I'm not exactly buying the 'innocent bridge builder' story anymore."

Tazuna rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly. "Well, uh… you see… I might've left out a small detail."

Sakura folded her arms. "Small detail? Those guys tried to kill us!"

Tazuna sighed heavily. "Fine. I'll come clean. The truth is, the Land of Waves has been under the control of a ruthless businessman named Gato. He's taken over everything—trade, resources, you name it. My bridge is the only thing standing between him and complete domination of our country."

"So Gato sent those guys to stop you," Sasuke said, his tone cold and analytical. "Because if you finish the bridge, it ruins his monopoly."

"Exactly," Tazuna admitted. "I didn't have enough money to hire a high-ranking ninja team, so… I asked for a C-rank mission and hoped for the best."

Naruto groaned, throwing his arms up. "Unbelievable! So this isn't a simple escort mission—it's practically a war zone!"

Kakashi, who had been listening quietly, finally spoke. "This changes things. Normally, I'd call for backup or cancel the mission outright, but…"

He glanced at his team, his single visible eye narrowing. "We've come too far to turn back now. I'll protect Tazuna myself if I have to, but the rest of you need to be prepared. This isn't a game anymore. If you're not ready to fight for real, say so now."

Naruto clenched his fists. "No way! I'm not backing down. I said I'd protect him, and I'm gonna do it—even if it's a bone-crushing job!"

Sasuke smirked faintly. "As long as you don't slow us down."

Sakura looked nervous but nodded. "I'll do my part, Sensei."

Kakashi's eye crinkled in what might have been a smile. "Good. Stay alert. From here on out, we're in hostile territory."

The Fog Descends

The group continued their journey in tense silence. The air grew colder as they entered a forested area, and a thick mist began to roll in. Naruto shivered, pulling his hoodie tighter around himself.

"This mist is creepy," he muttered. "Feels like something's watching us."

"You're not wrong," Kakashi said, his voice unusually serious. "Mist like this doesn't form naturally. Stay close and keep your eyes open."

Naruto's left eye flickered blue briefly, a faint hum resonating in his chest. He didn't know what it meant, but the sensation filled him with unease.

Suddenly, the sound of metal slicing through air broke the silence. Kakashi's head snapped up. "Get down!"

A massive blade came hurtling toward them, spinning like a deadly wheel. It embedded itself in a nearby tree with a heavy thunk, the force shaking the ground.

From the mist, a figure emerged—a tall man with spiky black hair, a cruel smirk, and bandages covering the lower half of his face. He wore a sleeveless uniform with a Mist headband slashed through the middle, marking him as a rogue ninja.

"Well, well," the man said, his voice deep and mocking. "Looks like I've found some fresh prey."

Kakashi stepped forward, his body tense but controlled. "Zabuza Momochi. Demon of the Hidden Mist."

Naruto froze, the name sending a chill down his spine. Even Sasuke and Sakura stiffened, their usual confidence faltering.

"Wait, that's Zabuza?" Naruto whispered. "The guy who's supposed to be a legend?"

"Not just a legend," Kakashi said, his tone grim. "An A-rank missing-nin. He's not someone you can take lightly."

Zabuza chuckled darkly, pulling his massive blade free from the tree. "Kakashi Hatake. Copy Ninja of the Leaf. This is going to be fun."

The Battle Begins

Before anyone could react, Zabuza formed a series of hand signs. "Hidden Mist Jutsu!"

The already thick fog deepened, becoming an impenetrable veil. Visibility dropped to almost nothing, and Naruto could barely make out the shapes of his teammates.

"Kakashi-sensei!" Naruto called, panic creeping into his voice. "What do we do?"

"Stick together," Kakashi ordered. "Protect Tazuna. I'll handle Zabuza."

Zabuza's laughter echoed through the mist. "You think you can protect him from me? You're already dead."

A flash of movement sliced through the fog. Kakashi blocked Zabuza's blade with a kunai, the clash of steel ringing out like thunder.

"Stay focused," Kakashi growled. "This isn't like the ambush. Zabuza's on a completely different level."

Naruto nodded shakily, his hands forming seals. He summoned two skeletal clones, their glowing blue eyes piercing the mist. The clones moved ahead cautiously, their bony frames creaking with each step.

"You think I'm scared of some cheap tricks?" Zabuza's voice taunted, coming from everywhere and nowhere.

One of Naruto's clones was cut down in an instant, dissolving into chakra. The other swung its arm at the source of the attack, but it hit nothing but air.

Sasuke narrowed his eyes, his kunai at the ready. "This mist isn't natural. He's using it to control the battlefield."

"Exactly," Kakashi said, his voice sharper now. "Stay defensive. He's trying to separate us."

Naruto's Resolve

Naruto's heart pounded as he stood protectively in front of Tazuna. He felt the weight of the situation pressing down on him, but he refused to back down.

"This guy's scary, but we're Team 7," Naruto muttered to himself. "I've got my team. I've got my skeletons. I've got…"

His eye flickered blue again, and he felt a strange surge of energy. Summoning another Gaster Blaster, he aimed it toward the sound of Zabuza's voice and fired. The beam sliced through the mist, creating a temporary clearing, but Zabuza wasn't there.

"You're trying too hard, kid," Zabuza sneered from behind him.

Naruto spun around just in time to see Zabuza's blade descending. Before it could strike, Kakashi appeared, blocking the attack with a kunai.

"Not so fast," Kakashi said, his Sharingan blazing to life.

The sight of the Sharingan froze Zabuza momentarily, his grin faltering. "So, you're finally serious, Kakashi."

As the two clashed again, the air crackled with tension. Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke stood their ground, ready to protect Tazuna at all costs. The battle had only just begun, and the stakes had never been higher.
