Chapter 23

"I'm a dead man," Todd shook his head. M'gann had pulled him out of the bedroom to give him the update.

"Why? You didn't do this," the Martian was confused.

"I shouldn't have left her here alone. I told her that I was making one quick stop to pick up dinner and she sounded fine but something in my gut… I knew something was wrong. Her tone was off," he said.

"Ok, but you couldn't have foreseen this. None of us did. We were doing what we needed to, in order to protect secret identities and locations. If that got out…" M'gann shook her head.

"It just seems like the harder Marie tries to become normal, the harder things pull her back in," Todd admitted.

"The transition cannot be easy. As someone who has lived multiple lifetimes, no matter how much we want to be like everyone else, we aren't. Marie is lucky to have you to share her secrets with. You guys will get through this," she gave him a smile. Todd just nodded and plopped down on the couch.

Kara was just sitting on the bed, next to Marie, holding her hand. She had no idea what to do and she could not call J'onn as he was busy making sure Enigma's head was emptied of all the sensitive information. She hoped that Diana would be there soon. Still, she wondered how it would be possible to help Marie, without involving the Amazon. Marie had been running her own ship, as it were, for years. Now suddenly, things were crumbling and Kara wanted to be able to help without calling Diana every time.

"I can hear you thinking," Marie said.

"Sorry. I think loudly when I'm worried," Kara teased her, glad that her friend didn't seem so out of it. Marie heaved a sigh.

"Why do you worry about me so? I've run countless missions without you knowing what they were. I've been in some scrapes. Admittedly, nothing as bad as this one," the woman asked.

"You have been doing a lot, on your own. There's no need for that now. I worry that you are having trouble seeing it. Worried that you think we're all disappointed – which could not be further from the truth. We all have something that makes us special – you are human and that – that is what makes you special. We run into danger knowing we're bulletproof or can phase through walls or use telekinetic energy to subdue a criminal. We have a level of backup that allows us to be fearless. You – you remind me a lot of Kate. Running headlong into danger knowing that you only have your wits and your body to help you. You inspire others to be better, even if they don't know who you are or how you stopped something crazy from happening," Kara told her.

"Little one is right," Diana's voice made them both look to the doorway.

"I failed. Enigma found out our secret. I have no idea if she spewed it to someone else," Marie was upset.

"The secret is safe. You are safe. We are going to get through this, just like we always do," Diana told her.

"It might be time to make a trip home," Marie admitted.

"A few days there might be the best thing for it," Diana agreed. Marie reached out for her Amazon sister who took her hand and helped her sit up.

"Mother is undoubtedly on her way," Diana warned her.

"How does she do that?" Marie asked.

"Only the Gods know – probably best kept that way too," Diana winked. Kara smirked. Mothers were the same, no matter where they come from. They could hear Todd stuttering in the other room.

"Quick before she kills him," Marie chuckled. Diana exited the room and Kara made sure that Marie was steady on her feet.

"Thanks Kara. I needed that," the woman smiled at her.

"Anytime. That's why I'm here. You have my phone number," the blonde winked.

"Good luck writing that story you promised Miss Grant," Marie said as they exited the room.

"I'm a dead woman," Kara shook her head.
