Luton stirred as a cold breeze brushed against his fur. His eyes slowly opened, finding himself lying on soft grass by the edge of a large, silent lake. The faint scent of lake water filled the air as small waves lapped against the shore below. A dull ache throbbed in his head, but it was fading.
"Hello?" A voice broke through the haze of his thoughts.
Luton turned his head, blinking up at the source. A Leafeon stood a short distance away, her vibrant leaves softly shimmering in the morning light. She tilted her head, concern flickering in her bright amber eyes.
"Oh, you're awake!" she said, stepping closer. "Haven't seen you around before. My name's Erie."
Luton pushed himself up, glancing around. Nothing about this place seemed familiar. His heart raced as he struggled to remember... anything. "I... I'm Luton," he said finally, his voice shaky. "I'm a human—"
"A human?" Erie interrupted, raising an eyebrow. "You look like a plain ol' Eevee to me!"
Luton blinked, what she said confused him. He glanced down, expecting to see his hands—but instead, small brown paws greeted him. His fluffy tail twitched involuntarily as he stared at his reflection in the lake. Big, round eyes. Soft brown fur. The unmistakable face of an Eevee.
"I'm... an Eevee?" he whispered, his chest tightening.
Erie watched him with a mixture of curiosity and concern. "Are you feeling okay? You were out cold when I found you a good while ago," she said softly. "If you need somewhere to stay, you can come with me. My place isn't far."
Luton turned to her, still reeling from the revelation. The warmth in her voice and the kindness in her offer steadied him, if only a little. "Y-yeah," he said, managing a small, hesitant smile. "I'll take you up on that."
Erie turned and said, "Follow me then, it's just this way," as she started toward her place, Luton followed, finding it weird to walk on fours but he got used to it fairly fast. The forest was very peaceful, the sound of the grass under their paws and the wind blowing through the leaves was calming to Luton. "So, what happened that knocked you out for so long?" Erie asked as they passed a calmly flowing river. "I don't remember that part." Luton answered, looking at his shaking reflection in the river, still trying to accept what he is now. He knows dwelling on it won't get him anywhere, but it's just difficult for him to just- "Luton?" Erie said, looking back after noticing that Luton had stopped, "You alright?"
Luton snapped out of his thoughts and looked over at Erie for a moment, the sound of the shining river filling his ears again, "Y-Yeah, I'm fine." he said, catching up to Erie. "Man, you are all sorts of weird!" Erie teased, though her ears flicked nervously. "I-In a good way! Don't get me wrong!" she added.
Luton couldn't help but chuckle a little at her hurried correction. "Don't worry, Erie, I won't take it the wrong way." Luton reassured Erie, "So… how long were you staring at me for?" he asked.
Erie froze for a moment, her leafy tail twitching. "Uh, since this morning?" she admitted, her voice rising slightly at the end. Luton looked up, it was noon, "Alrighty then." Luton said, with a bemused smirk before looking back at where he was walking.
The forest around them was lively and bustling. Skwovets darted playfully from bush to bush, their chittering mixing with the rustle of the rolling wind. Taillows fought in the treetops, their cries sharp and echoing.
A Metapod suddenly dropped from a branch, landing with a soft thud right in front of Erie. "Whoa!" Erie yelped as she jumped back out of surprise, Luton chuckled softly, watching as Erie stood frozen for a moment before carefully batting the Metapod to the side with her paw. She shot him a look as he stifled another laugh.
"I didn't see anythin'." He said with a little smirk. "Alright, alright." Erie said, continuing to walk, "My place is right over here."
The trees opened up to a clearing, and Luton stopped to take it all in. In the middle of the clearing sat a little forest hut made of long sticks and mud. A scrappy wooden mailbox stood crooked by the entrance, while a living grapevine draped gracefully over the doorway, dotted with a few ripening berries. A river flowed near the hut, it was quietly trickling with Magikarp swimming downstream and some Pidgeys flew overhead.
"This place is really nice." Luton said, his voice warm as he took in the serene scene. He turned to Erie, glancing back at the quaint little hut. "Did you make that hut yourself?"
"Yep!" Erie answered with a smile. "Took me forever to make, but it was totally worth it!" She stepped through the entrance, with Luton following close behind. The moment he stepped inside, Luton was struck by its serene, almost magical atmosphere. The walls were a seamless blend of smooth wood and vibrant greenery, with leafy vines curling across the edges like intricate artwork. Small, rounded windows let in soft beams of sunlight, casting warm patterns on the grass-like floor.
At the centre of the room, a raised platform cushioned with thick, velvety moss served as a bed. Surrounding it were decorative plants and pots, each holding vibrant flowers or berries that added splashes of colour. Tiny glowing buds nestled among the greenery gave off a faint light, adding to the enchanting ambiance.
Erie stood next to Luton. "What do you think?" she asked, her pride in her creation clearly leaking into her words.
"It's… incredible," Luton murmured, his gaze sweeping across the room. It felt less like a home and more like stepping into a living garden, alive with subtle energy and beauty. Erie sat in the middle of the space, her gaze fixed on the window where the setting sun bathed the room in warm hues. For a moment, Luton didn't notice her, as she seemed to merge effortlessly with the surrounding greenery, her fur and leafy features becoming one with the vibrant foliage.
Eventually, Luton settled beside her, with his gaze drifting to his little brown paws, a strange familiarity washing over him. Why did this little fluffy body feel so… natural? It feels like he always had this body, but he didn't want to dwell on it too much. If all this is a dream or something, then he might as well enjoy this while he can right?
Luton looked up at the setting sun, closing his eyes and letting the warm rays bathe his brown fur. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the room was plunged into darkness. Erie broke her silent staring contest with the outside and glanced at Luton, who now looked undeniably tired.
Erie flicked her tail playfully behind him. "You should lay down before you fall on your face," she said with a light chuckle, guiding him to the bed. Luton settled down, subconsciously curling up and hugging his tail for warmth.
Soon, Erie joined him, and together, they drifted off to sleep, the quiet of the night wrapping around them like a soft blanket. Little did they know, the peaceful calm of the night was merely a mask for something far more chaotic…
