This wasn't supposed to happen.
The girl with the too-trusting eyes teetering on the border of derision and sanity was supposed to lose everyone, but she wasn't supposed to die.
She wasn't supposed to stare at her mirror-image that was a bit too pristine, too well fed, adorned in fabric finer than hers in shock. She wasn't supposed to mimic her carbon copy's aghast mouth floundering open and close as the light behind one of their eyes flashed for the last time and die.
Jinx wasn't supposed to die.
Not this world's Jinx.
How was she supposed to know that this was going to happen?
Ekko was but a malnourished dream that she had helped feed and nurture. His timidness at her forward approach was nothing short of alarming. They had danced around each other for so long that the careful tilt of his head, away from her, was all but telling; they had been partners for a long time. He had enough practice to be immune to her advances. This man wasn't hers.
But he was.
Staring at his torn clothes and soot-stained whites, he was all hard lines and muscle - the sharp edges of his upbringing were undeniable. Yet he still looked like the one unconscious in her lap. More tired, more intimidating - but he still stood tall and gentle, and this was her Ekko. His opposite and his twin. Her childhood friend.
She didn't know when she had gotten to her feet, when his slow smile was traded with a hesitant line, but she did recognize when her fingers had latched onto his frayed clothing, and when his own wrapped around her wrist, wanton and annoyed at the same time. They were always contraindications to each other. He wanted her to stay safe - she wanted to protect him from his world. She thought shThis wasn't supposed to happen.

A/N:
Hi everyone! (and any long lost readers I've missed over the years). I haven't been on FFN in years, or at least that's how it feels like. I am active under the same username over in AO3 so feel free to follow me there...but I thought for funsies I would post one of my current stories from there over here too. I kinda do miss the simplicity of FFN...
Anyway - thank you for reading! This story will be about 10 chapters long and is more updated on AO3, but I will be sure to post here too! Thanks
