Chapter 4: The Call to Action
The next morning, Alex stood in the small workshop he'd converted from an unused storage room in his apartment. Tools and scraps of metal were scattered across the workbench as he tinkered with a new piece of equipment he'd been designing. Working with his hands always helped him clear his mind, and after the incident with Seth, he needed it.
He barely noticed the soft chime of the holotone device activating until a flicker of light caught his eye. Turning, he saw a holographic projection of Dante Vale, the leader of the Huntik Foundation's top Seekers.
"Alex," Dante's deep, steady voice called out, drawing his attention fully. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything."
Alex wiped his hands on a rag, straightening up. "Dante? No, you're not. What's going on?"
The projection of Dante's face looked unusually grim. "We've got a situation. One of our agents in southern Europe picked up strange activity near a long-dormant Titan shrine. From the descriptions, it's unlike anything we've encountered before. I need someone I can trust to look into it."
Alex's heart rate quickened. A Titan shrine? That was big news. "You want me on this?"
"You've proven yourself, Alex," Dante said, his tone firm. "You've got the skills and the instincts for this kind of mission. But it's not just you—I've already contacted Sophie. You'll be working together."
Alex tried to ignore the slight heat that rose to his face at Sophie's name. "Of course. We'll get it done. Do we have any intel on who's behind the activity?"
Dante hesitated. "That's the other part of this. We believe the Organization may be involved."
Alex felt a knot form in his stomach. The Organization was Huntik's greatest enemy, and if they were interested in this shrine, it couldn't be good. "Understood. When do we leave?"
"As soon as possible," Dante said. "I'm sending you the coordinates now. Be careful, Alex. This won't be easy."
The hologram flickered out, leaving Alex standing in silence. He took a deep breath, letting the weight of the mission settle on his shoulders.
Just then, there was a knock at his door. When he opened it, Sophie stood there, already dressed for the mission, her expression serious but with a glimmer of determination in her eyes.
"Ready to go?" she asked, holding up a small backpack.
Alex nodded. "Always."
