"Attention future disappointments and occasional surprises," Evony's voice crackled over the PA system, dripping with her usual morning cheer. "Faeloween preparations begin today. Yes, humans are allowed to participate. No, they cannot be used as decorations. And to the pixie who suggested filling the gym with 'festive fairy dust' - detention. Forever."
From her seat in Advanced Fae Biology, Kenzi muttered, "Worth suggesting."
"Furthermore," Evony continued, "all Faeloween costumes must be approved. No showing your true forms - I'm looking at you, Shifter Department. And absolutely no unauthorized magic. The last thing we need is another incident like last year's 'accidental' dragon transformation. That's all. Try not to be completely useless today."
Dr. Everett waited for the announcement to end before clearing her throat. "Speaking of partnerships, it's time for your semester projects. And yes, I'll be assigning pairs."
Bo barely heard the first few assignments, too busy watching Lauren furiously writing notes about something in her massive biology textbook. The human had somehow managed to get her hands on graduate-level Fae research materials.
"Dennis and Lewis."
The room went silent. Even Dr. Everett seemed to pause, as if waiting for an objection.
"Called it!" Kenzi's triumphant whisper showered nearby students in sparkles.
"Moving on," Dr. Everett continued quickly, "Martinez and-"
But Bo had stopped listening because Lauren was already gathering her materials, heading toward Bo's table with that same fearless purpose she showed in the cafeteria. Up close, Bo could see Lauren's notebook was filled with detailed diagrams of various Fae energy systems.
"I have so many questions about succubus biology," Lauren started, then seemed to catch herself. "I mean, Fae biology in general. But the energy transfer systems are particularly fascinating."
"I bet they are," Tamsin commented dryly as she passed their table. The combat teacher had a habit of randomly appearing in other classes, supposedly checking on "security protocols."
Lauren didn't even flinch. "Actually, Coach Valkyrie, I have questions about your species' power manifestation too. The electromagnetic readings during your demonstrations are-"
"Nerd alert," Kenzi stage-whispered, but she was grinning.
Tamsin raised an eyebrow, looking almost impressed despite herself. "Talk to me after you survive being Dennis's lab partner, human."
As Tamsin walked away, the lights flickered briefly. A cold draft swept through the room. Lauren immediately pulled out a small device that looked decidedly not standard-issue.
"Are you taking energy readings in class?" Bo asked, both impressed and concerned.
"Would you believe me if I said no?"
"Ms. Lewis," Dr. Everett called out, "while your enthusiasm for data collection is admirable, perhaps we could focus on today's assignment?"
The assignment, as it turned out, involved analyzing different types of Fae energy signatures. Lauren's eyes lit up like it was Christmas.
"This is perfect," she whispered. "I've been tracking unusual power fluctuations all week. Look at this pattern-"
The lights flickered again. Longer this time. In the corner, Kenzi's wings twitched nervously.
"Just maintenance," Dr. Everett announced, but she exchanged a look with Tamsin by the door.
Lauren was scribbling rapidly in her notebook. "The frequency matches historical accounts of- well, never mind. Should we start with baseline readings?"
Bo found herself smiling despite her nervousness about being paired with a human. Lauren's enthusiasm was infectious. "Sure. Though I should warn you - my powers aren't fully developed yet."
"Even better! Documenting pre-maturation energy patterns in a succubus is unprecedented. Not that I've been researching succubi specifically. Or thinking about your powers. Or-"
"Ladies," Tamsin interrupted, "less flirting, more science."
Both of them jumped. Neither denied the flirting accusation.
The rest of class passed in a blur of Lauren's excited scientific observations and Bo trying not to get too distracted by her new lab partner's... everything.
"Your aura shifts frequency when you're processing energy," Lauren noted at one point. "It's beautiful. Scientifically speaking."
Before Bo could respond, Raphael appeared at their table. "Hey Lauren, I was wondering if-"
The lights went out completely. When they came back on seconds later, there was frost on the windows. Lauren's energy reader was beeping frantically.
"Okay, that's definitely not maintenance," Kenzi muttered.
"Class dismissed!" Dr. Everett announced quickly. "Reading assignments are posted online. Ms. Lewis, a word about proper research protocols..."
As Bo packed up, she noticed Tamsin studying the frost patterns with an unusually serious expression.
"Everything okay?" Bo asked.
"Just peachy, baby Fae." Tamsin's smirk returned. "Though you might want to get those baby succubus powers under control. You're practically glowing every time your lab partner talks science."
"I am not-"
"Your eyes are literally blue right now."
Bo quickly looked away, but not before catching Lauren's small smile as she finished her conversation with Dr. Everett.
"This is going to be so much fun," Kenzi declared, trailing sparkles as she bounced excitedly. "Should I start planning the wedding now, or-"
"Don't you have detention to get to?"
"Please, like Evony actually meant forever. That's what, Tuesday in pixie time?"
But Bo was only half-listening, watching Lauren make one final note in her ever-present notebook before leaving. Whatever was causing the strange power fluctuations, Bo had a feeling her new lab partner was already figuring it out.
And that was both exciting and terrifying.
