Chapter 27: Out With a Bang
It was obvious what Spinner was going to do. Before joining the League, he had felt he didn't belong. Ostracized for a mutation he couldn't even control. But the League had quickly taken him in, no questions asked. They never made rude comments or remarks about his mutation, just accepting him for the person he was. Spinner loved it, the safe space where everyone was allowed to be themselves. It was freeing compared to the outside, and Spinner wouldn't trade it for the world. So it was obvious he would be willing to die for any of the League members, no questions asked. He would die for his family if it meant he could keep them safe. With this thought, Spinner steeled himself and stood in the bullet's path.
Briefly, Spinner heard a gush of wind and someone screaming his name, before everything faded to black.
Bang
—
Twice was very excited, he wasn't. The League got to destroy the Shie Hassaiki and take revenge for them killing Magne and stealing Compress's arm. Speaking of, he and Mr. Compress were in the middle of a battle with Mimic. So far, everything was going great, no it wasn't. So far, neither of them had been injured. Just having to keep good balance with the shaking of the walls.
Unfortunately, they were still having trouble locating Mimic, super easy! But they were bound to figure it out at some point. Insignia had kindly pointed out the best way to beat Mimic if he ever happened to use trigger on himself. And that would be by antagonizing the Yakuza and Overhaul. Insignia made it a point to shove into all of their heads, who they could easily manipulate, which Twice is ashamed to say he wouldn't have thought of it himself. Stupid. Oh well, at least they had a plan to work with.
With this in mind, he and Mr. Compress started antagonizing Mimic.
"The Yakuza sucks! Weak!"
"The League of Villains will prevail victorious in the end!"
"Overhaul is a horrible leader! Yeah right he is."
"The Yakuza are just a bunch of egotistical idiots!"
"Overhaul is stupid and his plan will never work! Obviously."
"If only Overhaul had been a better leader, this wouldn't have happened."
And eventually, their blatant antagonizing proved to be fruitful. Mimic started howling in rage, while also making the room wave around more. While he was in his tantrum, he also revealed where he was hidden the entire time. A place in the ceiling. They couldn't reach the ceiling, Like hell we're gonna give up!, but they could continue to anger Mimic and make him mess up.
So with this thought in mind, Twice smiled. Everything was going great and according to plan.
Mimic was panicking. Everything had been going so well, but then the scum had decided to start bad mouthing the Yakuza and Overhaul. Like hell Mimic would just stand there and let them so blatantly disrespecting everything he prided. Overhaul was the best, and was to never be doubted. But was he? Overhaul had said he trusted him to finish the job, and Mimic had no intentions on letting his boss down. But as soon as they started to disrespect the Yakuza, Mimic started to lose control of himself. His control in everything around him was starting to become weaker, meaning he would soon be powerless again.
Should he retreat? Should he run back and try and find Overhaul? Wait, no. Overhaul had said he believed in him. Said that he was the only one that he trusted to get the job done. So Mimic had to fulfill his orders, so why couldn't he?
Everything had been going great, until it wasn't.
But was this doubting Overhaul? Was he doubting Overhaul and his beliefs? No! He would never dream of crossing his boss, not when said boss had given him purpose. Overhaul had lifted him up from the trenches, and gave him a purpose in life. Something that needed to be fulfilled. So why did he feel so conflicted right now?
On the one hand, his boss had said he believed in him to take care of the League. On the other hand, his boss had started to flee as soon as the League made their presence known in their base. Overhaul hadn't stayed, he'd left them. He'd abandoned them.
Was this him betraying them all? Was he throwing them all away again? Just to be discarded pieces of trash all over again? No-no, Overhaul would never do that. He could never do that to any of them. He had said that they were all important to the resurrection of the Yakuza. He wouldn't just leave them when his safety was in danger. Right?
Or would he?
Mimic didn't know, but he did know he was losing strength. What was he supposed to do? Without trigger in his system, he was nothing. Weak and useless. He couldn't be of any use to Overhaul if he was weak. And that was when he remembered. Overhaul had told him to only use it in case of an emergency.
The extra dose of trigger.
Swiftly, Mimic pulled the gun out of his pocket, and pointed it towards his neck. He then quickly shot himself with the drug, and everything went still. The walls stopped bending and swaying, and everyone stopped moving. It was quiet, and then the room was filled with sounds once again. Mimic fell from his position in the ceiling, but was quickly accompanied by the feeling of concrete building up against him. It seemed that the extra dose of trigger had started to pull the concrete towards him in a protective shell. And that's when Mimic realized he felt powerful.
Was this how Overhaul always felt? Having that knowledge that you're so strong, no one could hope to stand against you? Having that position of authority where no one questioned your abilities. Was this what true strength felt like?
If this was what true strength was, Mimic knew he loved it. It was everything he wasn't, strong, powerful, unstoppable.
It was exhilarating knowing the amount of power Mimic now held in his hands. He was confident, gaining that feeling when you know you can't be beat. It was…delightful. Mimic wished he could feel this strong all the time, but knew it wasn't possible.
So with his newfound strength, he started contorting the walls in even greater precision than before. This also resulted in the two League members being slammed against the walls. One more so than the other. It made Mimic feel an overwhelming sense of pride wash over him, knowing that he hadn't failed Overhaul in the end.
And then, everything that had suddenly been within his grasp, was immediately whisked away.
Twice was now worried. Everything had been going so well, and then Mimic had taken another dose of trigger. For a moment, everything seemed to still, that is until the room delved into chaos. The walls were contorting in ways that had not been possible before. Twice wasn't prepared for this. Insignia had said nothing about double dosage of trigger. Maybe he hadn't thought of the possibility. Yeah, that was probably it.
It was still worrying though. Because of this unexpected outcome, he and Mr. Compress had no idea what they were supposed to do. Actually, they couldn't even do anything at the moment. If they thought the twisting of the walls was bad before, it was now ten times as problematic. This was also how Twice found himself slamming into the wall, and falling weirdly on his ankle.
He wasn't sure what they were going to do since they were both beat up pretty badly from being slammed into the walls once. But before they even had the chance to brainstorm or contact Insignia, the screaming and raging of Mimic ceased. One moment, he was standing in the center of the room wielding the power of a god, and the next, he was face down on the floor. All of the walls that had previously been warped had also started to recede to their original places, leaving Mimic heavily exposed in the center of the room.
It was confusing how someone could be so powerful in one moment, and so weak in the next.
"Hey Twice."
Huh? Was someone talking to him? Looking towards the sound of the voice, Twice saw Mr. Compress jogging over to him. "You ok Twice? You hit the wall pretty hard. Looks like you also screwed up your ankle in the process."
His…ankle?
That's strange. Now that Twice looked, he could indeed see that his ankle was bent in a weird shape while bleeding.
Wait…was he…feeling pain?
Oh my god. He was feeling pain!? How was this possible? He got hurt! He should already be a pile of dust! Why wasn't he turning to dust? It didn't make any sense. When his clones got injured, they melted away. So why was he still here!? Why was he still sitting on the ground in one piece!? He should be slowly melting away like the rest of his clones!
Except, something was different. Twice noticed, it was quiet. Too quiet. It had never been this silent in his head before, and he wondered why it was silent now. And that was when he realized, there was no voice. The voice was gone. It was no longer nagging at the back of his head. The only thing currently sitting inside of his head was him.
What did this mean? The voice was gone, so….
Oh…Twice understood now.
He was Twice.
He was Jin Bubigawara.
He was the real Jin Bubigawara.
He had always been the real him.
He wasn't a clone, he was real.
And then, Shigaraki and Overhaul burst into the room.
When Toga switched positions with Spinner, she was easily able to take Deidoro by surprise. She quickly cut him across his chest, while he stumbled back. He even tried to use his quirk on her, but it was no use. The slash on his chest was fatal, meaning Deidoro was too weak to really try and fight back. Taking this into account, Toga lunged at him, dead set on finishing the job. Luckily for her, she was faster than Deidoro. So, she was easily able to stab him again in the stomach. She twisted her knife and then pulled it out. She then watched in satisfaction as Deidoro slowly slumped down onto the ground.
Glad that she had finished her job, she whipped around to get ready to cheer Spinner on, but immediately stopped. The sight that she turned around to shocked her. Nemoto was pointing a gun at her, and Spinner was moving to intercept it. She could only stand there as time seemed to freeze momentarily.
All Toga could register was the faint action of her reaching her arm out, and yelling "Spinner!" Then there was red at the edges of her vision. Toga found she didn't like this red. It was frighteningly loud, but deathly calm at the same time. Just like before.
Bang.
