A/N: Wishing all my American readers a Happy Thanksgiving. Next update will be after the holiday. :)
Chapter 19
"Your operation is dead. We've cut off your weapons and Snakebite supply. We have you in custody. There's plenty of proof to go around for you to end up in an eight by ten cell for the rest of your life. So, while that all sounds lovely, there is something that we don't know – why?" Agent Rainwalker asked of their captive. The patient was chained to the hospital bed in ARGUS' secure medical infirmary. Kara stood out in the hallway, using her excellent hearing to listen in on the conversation.
"Supergirl almost ruined my foot," Enigma said.
"You tried to run. You're lucky you didn't get shot. Besides the doctor tells me you'll maybe lose a few toes. We've developed a way to cure Supergirl's freeze breath – well in small quantities anyway," Rainwalker said.
"So, you want me to answer why. Well what fun would that be?" Enigma asked.
"We know that Tatiana and Natasha were no longer working for Safiyah. Since you helped Natasha out, stands to reason that neither are you. A good friend once said that Safiyah likes to play with her food. What do you think she'd do to you for betraying her trust?" Rainwalker gave her a look.
"I've been operating on my own for a long time now. Safiyah could have sent someone to stop me. Me being here is proof of that," Enigma smirked.
"Funny, every one of the former Many Arms of Death members you recruited seemed more concerned about their safety. See we don't know how she does it, but somehow prison transports and even occasionally in the prison yard, those who were not loyal… well they get their just desserts," Rainwalker remained cool, despite her perpetrator playing hard to get.
"I was much easier to reach when I was on the outside if she wanted it. Sometimes she's not as laser focused as you think," Enigma just shrugged it off.
"Still, you messed up the sister of her former lover. We put the word out on the street when it all started. We wanted to bring Mary in without harming her," the agent told her.
"How'd that work out? Mary was one of my best success stories," Enigma smirked.
"Well, it took a bit but once we got your claws out of her head, the rest… she's doing what needs to be done to address it. One day, she'll be back to her old self," Rainwalker said.
"Too bad. She made a good soldier. The stories she told me though…" Enigma whistled before continuing, "it'd make your hair stand on end."
"She lived a pretty plain life. What stories could she have?" Rainwalker hoped she'd convey her incredulity enough. Still, Kara immediately grew concerned that secret identities were at risk.
"You'd think so, wouldn't you? See the secret to my gift is that I don't need the Snakebite to do all of my bidding. Most of the time, I can find the smallest weakness and exploit it to make people compliant. There must be a weakness there though. Your friend Marie had few weaknesses. That one needed the Snakebite to comply but once she did… wow," Enigma couldn't help but chuckle. Kara moved down the hall and quickly called Kate.
"We have a situation," the blonde said without even saying 'hello'.
"Well, I'm just fine, thanks for asking," Kate responded, the sarcasm was evident.
"Is Diana with you?" Kara wanted to know.
"She's out," that meant that Kate was not by herself and could not reveal that Diana was indeed Wonder Woman and out fighting crime.
"Enigma has been compromised," Kara told her. The meaning must have sunk in as her friend did not answer right away.
"Give me twenty minutes. I'll call you back," Kate promised.
