Chapter 21

"Thanks for getting here so quickly Captain," Detective Klass said as she met the superior officer and Elliot at the front door to Eliza's building.

"Of course. Forensics is on their way. Does it look like forced entry?" Olivia asked.

"Truth be told, these locks don't exactly scream sturdy. I didn't see anything when Eliza went to put her key in the lock but Betty… she was on edge, so I made her wait in the hallway. Betty and I went in and I found the message. I didn't see anything out of place though so I cleared the apartment and call you," Klass explained as they climbed the stairs to the second-floor apartment.

"Where is Eliza now?" Elliot wanted to know.

"Betty is keeping her inside the apartment. I didn't want her out in the hallway in case that was our perp's intention," Klass explained.

"Dylan is in our custody so I doubt he did this," Olivia shook her head as Klass slowly opened the apartment door. Eliza seemed incredibly relieved that the detective had brought back up.

"Eliza, Detective Klass is going to help you pack a suitcase. Forensics are on their way here and you can't stay. It's clear that someone is not happy," Olivia told her while Elliot looked at the paint.

"Ok but where am I going to go?" Eliza asked.

"We'll get you to the precinct first and then sort out what the next steps are. I promise," Olivia gave her a small smile. She could hear the sound of sirens which would most likely be forensics and officers from the local precinct to help secure the scene. Klass took Eliza down to her bedroom and Betty followed.

"Liv," Elliot drew her attention to what he'd been staring at.

"What do you have, El?" She asked.

"This paint isn't dry yet. You can see the drips and little paint bubbles. Watch," he blew air out of his lips and the little bubbles moved.

"Damn," Olivia shook her head.

"A few minutes earlier and Klass and Eliza could have been walking into the apartment completely unaware," he shook his head.

"Caitlin is the only person who ties this all together but somehow Dylan has to be more involved than he's admitting," Olivia said.

"We know he didn't shoot Drew. Caitlin is able to break into people's apartments like she's some sort of ninja. It's not hard to believe that she could sneak up on Drew, who didn't know her, and shoot him. Dylan must have spilled the beans to Drew, which is why he had to die. Caitlin couldn't have her plans ruined by him growing a conscience and calling the police," Elliot figured.

"Call Fin and tell him to confront Dylan about the phone records and what exactly he told Drew. Have him tell Dylan that he's the reason Drew is dead. See if he gets a reaction or if he continues to try and throw Caitlin under the bus. Neither one of our suspects should have been able to get a gun yet somehow, they did," Olivia told him.

"We both know that it isn't as hard as we'd like it to be," her former partner pointed out. Olivia heaved a sigh, remembering the moment that they had no longer been partners – Jenna. Her actions inside the precinct and subsequent death at Elliot's hands started the roller coaster to follow.

"We need to shake things up. Call Jet. See if she could get any accomplices or family that Caitlin had on her rap sheet. If we start shaking the tree a little closer to home, we may get the answers we're looking for," Olivia said.

"You got it," Elliot smirked.
