Hello, I am back. I am rewriting Shattered Heart and Dreams. I gave into peer pressure when I wrote the last one and now I am going to write it like I had originally planned. I'll probably upset people, but I doubt those people are still around to read.

Please enjoy and review! :D

Laughed consumed the cherry red mustang as it navigated its way through an old country road. The summer night had been a common one for North Carolina- hot, sticky, and humid. A small plastic knife could cut through the air easily. As crickets serenaded the quiet night, heat lightning danced across the night sky.

Lucas Scott sat in the driver's seat maneuvering through the winding road. The squeals came from the passenger's seat. His wife Kate, of four years, sat convulsing under a pregnancy induced giggle fit. She could not control the laughs, snorts, and even tears running down her cheeks.

Lucas on the other hand focused his eyes forward resting his head on his curled arm. He could not find amusement in what she thought was particularly funny. He shook his head as she carried on.

In between her obnoxious giggles, she exclaimed "Come on Luke, it was so funny!" She wiped the tears from the corners of her asian eyes.

"Oh yeah," sarcastically he answered, "Hilarious."

The couple had spent the evening at a dinner Lucas's publishing company threw for him after he received many awards for his current novel. With over fifty people there, Lucas delivered an acceptance speech. Since he had always been gifted with words, the feat barely made him worry about memorizing his speech and he ad libbed most of it. Turns out not having notes lead him to fumble through the speech like a football player trying to make a touchdown.

"I'd like to thank my head editor Mr. Grinch, I mean Mr. Greenwich." Kate brought down her chin and mocked her husband with a deep voice.

Lucas's eyes squeezed shut for a moment at the thought. Thinking of calling the man that made his book possible a grinch in front of him made Lucas cringe inside. As his cheeks colored, Lucas thought of all the meetings with Paul Greenwich. He would come home after, grab a beer out of the refrigerator, and tell his wife all about working with the Grinch. Kate had warned him not to call him that just in case something like this would happen. Lucas did not see any harm in it. Till now.

"Or how about when you forgot your wife's name?" Kate poked seriously even though she was anything but serious.

Yeah, Lucas would be kicking himself for a while over that one. The woman was his wife and best friend. She had confidence that the book would be a complete success. She had always been the type to shoot something down if she didn't see it going anywhere, so he knew she might be right even when he didn't feel like it. She stayed up all hours with him when a deadline approached cheering him on with what she could. She gave him back rubs, made cookies, and let him bounce ideas off her. Some of the time he paced back and forth dictating things for her to type. Whenever deadlines would come around, Kate would call the book "The other woman".

Some moments his brain would be bare with ideas and then other times the inspiration flew off his fingers and on the screen. He could barely type fast enough at those times. Everytime inspiration like that kicked in time or no one else mattered. Nothing could break his focus.

One day such an event had taken place for an entire afternoon. The only thing that slightly altered his focus had been the squeak of a chair being sat in by his wife. He quickly lifted his eyes to acknowledge her presence. His ocean eyes looked over at her honey browns with raises eyebrows like she had something. Lucas brought his focus to the screen until he heard her clear her throat dramatically.

"You rather hang out with the other woman rather than to see what genders your babies are going to be." She expressed in an unimpressed voice.

Lucas barely grunted in agreement when the words absorbed in his head. His eyes shot up and looked at his three month pregnant wife who stroked her bloated stomach. His neck fell into his hands as he exclaimed;

"Oh no!" letting a out huge groan, "I completely forgot and I was totally into the stor-"

"That's why I put this up here." Kate replied pointing to an orange sticky note on the right corner of the laptop.

Boy or girl? Big reveal at 3:30.

Another groan surfaced from Lucas's gut. He saw the note when he first sat down, but after that he had completely forgotten about it. The inspiration took off the minute the word processor opened up that he wrote past the appointment to see the gender of their baby. Wait...did she say genders? He brought down his hands and looked her straight in the eye.

"Did you intentionally put a S at the end of gender?"

Kate made an aloof face as she looked at her pink nails, "I might have. You would have found out if you were there with me."

Lucas's voice let out a squeak which brought Kate's eyes to look at him. "Yes I did. Dr. Longstein said that the one was hiding behind the other one so we didn't see it before."

Lucas's eyes widened and leaned over to kiss his wife. He then took her small hands into his and asked gently, "So, tell me woman, what are we going to have?"

Kate leaned over and grabbed her purse. She pulled out a yellow envelope. "I had the nurse put the answers on a card so we could find out together."

Relieved, Lucas smiled and let out a sigh. He wanted to be there and find out at the same time as her. When he gestured for her to open, she tore the thing apart quickly. A boy and a girl. They were both so elated. That night they both each had two helpings of dinner and two helpings of dessert to celebrate.

Lucas owed it all to Kate for the success the book received. He could not thank her enough for everything she had done for it and him. So when he forgot her name in front of everyone he was absolutely mortified. Replaying it in this conversation did not make him feel any better.

"If you tell Nathan and Haley tomorrow at the BBQ, woman, I will kill you!"

Kate's face went completely straight and her hands fell to her eight month swollen stomach. "Did you hear that, kids? Daddy threatened to kill us. First he forgets mommy's name and now he is going to kill us."

Lucas let out a giant laugh. Kate had the most hilarious sense of humor. He loved everything about her. He glanced over at her. Her raven black hair was tied in a side braid that flowed down to her belly button. The sparkly gold eyeshadow she wore really deepened her chocolate eyes. Just the mere look of her caused his heart to go crazy. In any other circumstance his cardiologist would be concerned over the tachycardia that would take over, but in this sense it was quite alright.

As the car approached a train crossing, Lucas slowed the mustang down. He looked both ways and saw a train coming down the tracks on the right. Putting on his best english accent, he asked,

"Well my lady, looks our night train is coming. Shall we sit and watch it?"

"I suppose we should," Kate's impression of cockney accent came out. "Might be the last time it is just us two for a while."

Knowing North Carolina night trains were exceptionally long, Lucas turned the car off and put the gear in park. The night's orchestra of sounds had an accompaniment of the train barrelling down the tracks.

"Did you know that they are trying to pass an initiative where every train crossing has those gates that come down?" Kate added her random fact for the day.

"Why should they? Everyone knows they are supposed to stop when the flashers go off." As he completed his sentence the flashers began ticking and going off. "Do you know I love you, right?" he looked over at her again.

"Hmmm...backtracking from the threats of murder now are we?" teased Kate.

Lucas shrugged and nodded, "You could say that."

The both of them leaned into the middle of the car to exchange a kiss when another car's headlights shined in the mustang's rear view mirror. Blinded, Lucas almost cursed the other driver when there was a violent crash and shove of the car onto the tracks. He rubbed his neck after the whiplash of the car hitting them at full speed. Another bright light poured into the mustang and it was from the impending train. It belted a loud honk of warning of its fast arrival.

"Get us off the tracks, Lucas!" Kate bellowed with fear ceasing her.

Lucas fumbled for the keys that fell out of his hands and onto the ground. He reached to grab them, but smacked his head against the steering wheel. After seeing stars, he extended his hands to get them. The seconds seemed like he was in slow motion, but pressing fast forward as well. His heart hammered in his chest faster than an entire drumline.

"LUCAS, HURRY!" Kate screamed.

Seeing how close the train had been closing in on them, he figured he wouldn't have enough time. He grabbed his wife and pushed open his driver's door. "Get out of the car!"

As he flung open the door, Lucas looked over to his right. The train's light blinded him. It connected with his car just as he was jumping out. The force of impact pushed him out. He steered himself to roll out of the way of the tracks. He flipped over several times and landed wrong on his right leg.

The train hitting the car caused an awful noise of metal twisting and bending like it was plastic. A loud wailing scream had been deafened by the loud horn blasing into the darkness. Lucas saw nothing, but darkness. He had no idea it had been him that was screaming.
