The sun rises gently over Houston, tinting the sky pink and gold. Brooke stares at her luggage by the front door of Peyton's house. Every detail of the room comes to her with a new intensity, as if her mind is trying to capture every corner so as not to forget anything. Peyton stands silently by her side, her eyes betraying the emotion of their separation. She grabs Brooke in a tight embrace.
Peyton : I don't want you to leave.
Brooke : Me neither, but you know I have to go home.
Peyton : Promise me you'll come back. There's still so much we haven't had time to do together.
Brooke nods, and they stay like that for a few moments, silent, until a car slowly pulls into the driveway. Brooke's heart races. Julian is there. He gets out of the car, his hands in his pockets, his features drawn. Peyton gives Brooke one last look and leaves her alone with him. A silence settles between them, heavy and loaded with everything they haven't said to each other. Julian approaches Brooke and, without a word, takes her hand. They walk slowly towards a small bench under a tree in the garden, out of sight.
Julian : I knew this moment was coming. But I didn't think it would be so... hard.
Brooke : Me neither. I don't want to leave, but... I have my life there.
Julian : I understand, Brooke. Your career, your friends... everything you've built, is there. But that doesn't make it any easier.
Brooke : What about you? What are you going to do?
Julian : I'm going to keep living here, running the ranch, working... but it's going to be different now.
He pauses, his eyes landing on her with an intensity she's never seen before.
Julian : Because I'm going to think about you all the time.
Brooke's lips tremble, and she can't contain her emotions anymore. A tear rolls down her cheek, and he wipes it away gently with his thumb, before pulling her into a protective embrace. They stay like that, entwined, for what seems like an eternity, without saying a word, as if they were trying to soak up each other before parting.
Julian : Do you think... it could work, the two of us?
Brooke : I don't know. New York and Houston are so far away. And our lives are so... different.
Julian : So, promise me one thing, Brooke.
Brooke : Anything you want.
Julian : Promise me you won't forget me. Promise me that no matter where life takes you, you'll remember these moments.
His voice cracks slightly, and Brooke feels all the love he didn't dare say.
Brooke : I promise you, Julian. You were one of the most beautiful encounters of my life. How could I forget you?
He kisses her one last time, a kiss filled with sweetness and silent promises, as a way to engrave this moment in their memory. When they break away, Brooke feels her heart break. It's a goodbye, but a goodbye loaded with all the emotions they couldn't express.
Julian : Go. Otherwise, you'll never leave.
Brooke nods, not daring to look at him one last time. She takes her luggage, her legs almost shaking, and gets into the car that is waiting to take her to the airport. Through the window, she sees Julian, motionless, arms crossed, following her with his eyes until she disappears at the end of the aisle.
In the plane, Brooke sits by the window and stares at the Texas landscape that passes beneath her. Her heart is heavy, as if she had left a part of herself behind. When the plane finally takes off, she closes her eyes, reviewing the images of the last few days. The shared laughter, the stolen moments, the confidences late at night... And that last look from Julian filled with tenderness and sweetness. New York finally appears before her eyes, immense and dizzying.
As Brooke enters her apartment, everything seems both familiar and foreign. Yet, despite the hustle and bustle of the city, a strange feeling of dizziness overwhelms her. That night, lying in bed, she stares at the ceiling, wondering if, somewhere under the Texas sky, Julian is thinking of her too.
The weeks pass in New York, and Brooke's life gradually resumes its course, but something seems different to her. She misses Julian of course, but there is something else, a feeling that she cannot define. At the office, she finds herself distracted, her mind wandering constantly to her memories of Texas. Her colleagues point out that she is paler than usual but she reassures them by saying that it is simply the return to New York life after the vast horizons of Texas. However, something is wrong. She feels tired, exhausted even, and the smell of coffee, usually comforting, suddenly makes her nauseous. She spends her days with this strange feeling, as if something inside her has changed. She puts it down to the stress of returning, to this silent breakup with Julian, and she tries to ignore it.
But as she walks through the lobby of her apartment building, she suddenly feels dizzy. She leans against the wall, closing her eyes to try to regain her senses. She takes a few moments to compose herself, leaning against the cool wall of her apartment building. Her heart beats a little faster, and a feeling of unease lingers, like a cloud above her. The idea that something is wrong haunts her, but she is determined not to give in to worry.
However, as she climbs the stairs, the symptoms become more insistent. Her thoughts stray to Julian, and she shivers as she thinks back to his caresses, to their moments together. A wave of heat passes through her, but it is not just arousal. It is something else, something she cannot ignore. As she enters her apartment, she glances in the mirror, scrutinizing her reflection. The paleness of her face makes her frown. She has always been in good shape, but she feels... different. Her clothes seem a little tighter, and her jeans, which she wore so easily, now seem almost uncomfortable. She then goes to the fridge, opens it and takes a sip from her bottle of water, but the taste of the water seems bland. She puts the bottle down, an intrusive thought crossing her mind. Maybe she should take a pregnancy test. She freezes, her heart pounding at the thought. It's stupid, right? She remembers the times she spent with Julian, that night in the fields, the silent promises they exchanged. But a pregnancy test? She had never really thought about it.
She waves the idea away, but it persists, insistent like an alarm. Her phone lives on the table. It's Peyton, asking how she's doing. Brooke texts her quickly that she's fine, but she knows she's lying to her. She doesn't know how to explain this growing sense of uncertainty, this dull anxiety that's eating away at her. She heads to the bathroom and opens the drawer under the sink. There, she sees the pregnancy test kit she'd bought a few months ago, after a joke with Peyton about life plans. She didn't think it would be useful, but now, doubt has crept into her. With trembling hands, she pulls out the test and reads the instructions. Her heart races with each step, and she takes a deep breath to try to calm her nerves.
After a few minutes of waiting that seem to stretch out forever, Brooke finally looks at the test. Her breath catches. The two clear lines pierce her heart like an arrow. She is in shock, the world around her begins to spin. Thoughts jostle in her head, each one crazier than the last. She slowly realizes what this means. A wave of emotions overwhelms her, oscillating between fear and a strange excitement. She steps back, leaning against the sink, her hands sweaty on the cool marble. How will she handle this? And above all, what was she going to say to Julian? She closes her eyes for a moment, chaos reigning in her mind, before reopening her eyes to her reality. The truth hits her like a thunderclap: she is pregnant. A life inside her, a life that will change everything. Her heart tightens at this idea, and she leans against the wall, short of breath. Everything she knew about herself, about her life, about her plans, collapses. She is there, in her New York apartment, while the echo of this discovery resounds like a call from destiny. The tension rises inside her, and she understands that nothing will ever be the same again. She needs answers, comfort, Julian. But the distance between Houston and New York seems wider than ever. She must make a decision, but for now, she remains frozen, lost in her thoughts, and the outside world gradually disappears.
She's pregnant. Now what?
The page turns, giving way to an uncertain future, as she realizes she is at a turning point in her life.
