Brooke stares at the pregnancy test on the table in front of her, as if staring at it over and over again will erase the obvious. The idea of carrying life inside her is both overwhelming and surreal. Her mind whirls, trying to figure out what this means to her.
The next morning, she makes an appointment with her doctor. Part of her hopes that a medical confirmation will help her see things more clearly. The office is quiet, and the soothing atmosphere calms her a little. After a series of tests, he gives her the answer she already knows deep down.
Doctor : Congratulations. You're about five weeks pregnant.
His voice echoes through the room like an unreal echo. Brooke takes a deep breath, trying to process this news. A strange serenity washes over her, mixed with panic, as if a part of her knows that this news is an unexpected turn in the essential.
Leaving the office, her head buzzing, Brooke grabs her phone and decides to call Peyton. Her heart is pounding, but she knows she's not ready to tell her the whole story. Not yet. She finds a quiet corner in a nearby café, and waits for her to pick up.
Peyton : Brooke! I'm glad you called! How are you?
Brooke : Hey, Peyton... I... I'm fine. How was your honeymoon? Did it go well?
Peyton : Oh, it was amazing! We traveled, saw breathtaking scenery... it was magical. But I'm glad to hear your voice. So what's new for you?
Brooke : Listen... I've got a lot on my mind right now. I was wondering... have you heard from Julian?
Peyton : Well, not really, no. With the wedding and the trip, I have to admit that we've all lost touch a little bit. Why? Did something happen between you at the wedding?
Brooke : We could say that... Let's just say I really need to talk to him.
Peyton : Oh, I see. Well, I know where he lives. He left me his card just in case. He lives on a ranch outside of Houston. It's a little out of the way, but I can send you the address.
Brooke : Thanks, Peyton. Really. You're the best.
Peyton : I'll send it to you right away. And if you need me, just let me know, okay? I'm here.
Brooke hangs up and, a few seconds later, a message appears on her screen with Julian's address. Seeing these words written in black and white makes things all the more real. She knows now that the next step is to go find him, to talk to him, to tell him what she has just discovered.
Back home, Brooke looks at the address on her phone, feeling a wave of emotions rising inside her. How is she going to tell him all this? And how will he react? Brooke instinctively brings her hand to her stomach, realizing that everything is going to change. But for now, she must prepare for this trip, prepare herself to face the truth and to tell him what will turn their lives upside down.
After two days of intense reflection, Brooke finally makes up her mind. She can't stay in this uncertainty with this news so heavy, to pretend that everything is normal. She gathers her courage and asks her boss for unpaid leave. She accepts, a little surprised, but Brooke knew she had to do it, she had to go to Houston and find Julian. With a ticket in her pocket, she boards the plane.
During the flight, her mind keeps going back to the moment when she should tell him. She imagines different versions of the scene, trying to anticipate his reaction, but each time, her heart beats faster. Julian has to know.
When she finally lands in Houston, Peyton is there to greet her, smiling and warm. She grabs her arm, and a feeling of comfort overwhelms Brooke.
Peyton : It's good to see you. I missed you!
Brooke : You too, Peyton.
Peyton : Come on, let's go.
On the way to her house, Peyton tells Brooke about her honeymoon, and she listens distractedly, trying to stay in the moment. But her mind is already elsewhere, already focused on what she has to do.
Once at Peyton's, Brooke leaves her stuff in the entryway, glances around, but her gaze is already fixed on the door. She has to go see him now.
Peyton : Do you want to rest a little before we go?
Brooke : No, I'm going right away. I... I want to talk to him as soon as possible.
Peyton : Wait, let me come with you! The ranch is a little isolated, and I know the road well. Plus, it might make you feel better not to go alone.
Brooke : Thanks, Peyton, really. But I want to talk to him alone. It's... important.
Peyton : Okay. But if you ever need anything, I'm here. And be careful, okay?
Brooke reassures her with a smile and promises to send her a message as soon as she has seen Julian. Peyton gives her a last sign of encouragement before Brooke leaves the house and gets into the car she lent her. With slightly trembling hands, she starts the car and takes the road towards the ranch. The landscape changes quickly as she moves away from Houston. The city gives way to endless fields, green hills, and country roads that wind through peaceful nature. Her heart beats faster with each mile, and as she approaches the ranch, excitement mixed with apprehension overwhelms her.
After a while, she finally sees the property. From a distance, the ranch is exactly as she had imagined it: a large house with red shutters, surrounded by grassy expanses and a few horses grazing peacefully in the shade of a tree. The setting is beautiful, and the place exudes tranquility, but at this moment, it is like a set where one of the biggest decisions of her life is going to be played out. She parks her car near the entrance. She slowly walks towards the door, her heart heavy and her mind in turmoil, trying to gather her courage. She takes a deep breath, her fists clenched, and knocks gently on the ranch door. Her hands are sweaty. She has imagined this moment so much, rehearsed in her head what she was going to tell him so much... The door finally opens, but it is not the familiar face of Julian that she sees. He's a tall man with deep blue eyes, a stubbled beard, and a smirk that quickly disappears when he notices Brooke's confused expression. Brooke doesn't remember seeing him at the wedding, but he seems like part of the place, comfortable in his boots and his old t-shirt.
Lucas : Hello. Can I help you?
Brooke : Um... Hello. My name is Brooke. I'm looking for Julian. Is he there? I really need to talk to him.
The moment she says his name, she sees the man in front of her freeze. His smile fades, and a shadow passes into his eyes. He lowers his head for a moment, and this heavy silence settles between them, a silence that makes the air harder to breathe. Brooke already feels something cold and painful invade her, but she stays there, her heart pounding, waiting for an answer. He finally looks up at her, and in his gaze, she senses an immense sadness.
Lucas : I... I'm sorry. Julian... Julian died. Two weeks ago.
The words hit Brooke hard. Everything stops around her, as if the whole world had just tipped into an unreal silence. Julian is dead? No... It can't be. Her legs are wobbling, and she barely holds on to the door frame to keep from collapsing.
Brooke : What? How... How?
Lucas : He had an accident with one of his horses. A horse he had known for years, but... that day, something went wrong. He was unseated and... he didn't survive his injuries.
Brooke shook her head, tears filling her eyes, unable to accept this reality. The news was so brutal, so unthinkable that her heart refused to let it in. Julian, with his smile, his bright eyes, his energy... How could this be possible? How could such a vibrant life be extinguished so brutally?
Brooke : No... no, it can't be...
Lucas approached, a compassionate look in his eyes, and placed a comforting hand on Brooke's shoulder.
Lucas : I'm so sorry... Were you close?
Brooke : Yes... I had to... I had to tell her something important.
Her voice breaks, and a tear slides down her cheek. Lucas looks at her with immense gentleness, as if he understands that her pain goes beyond a simple missed reunion.
Lucas : I don't know what you would have wanted to tell him, but... I think Julian would have liked to see you again, that he would have been happy to listen to you. He was a deeply good man, and he always talked about wanting to do good around him.
His voice trembles slightly, and Brooke understands then that he must be from Julian's family, probably a brother. His face has the same intensity that she had seen in Julian, the same slightly dreamy and tender look.
Lucas : I'm sorry to have to tell you this like this, here, today. But I thank you for coming. Maybe... maybe it will help you, to stay a moment here, on the ranch, to pay tribute to him in your own way.
Brooke nods, unable to speak, and feels her throat tighten with each breath. The sadness is immense but beneath the surface, something even heavier lies hidden: the secret she carries within her, this secret that she could never share with Julian.
