As Brooke stands outside for a moment, her gaze lost in the vastness of the fields, the emotion of her meeting with Karen still overwhelms her. Julian will never be there to see this child grow up, and even if he lives through him, a poignant absence accompanies him. But there is something more, something she had not really measured before speaking with Karen. Julian's family could also be part of this story, of this uncertain future that she dreads. She feels a strange mixture of apprehension and the need to be sincere with Lucas, to tell him what she is carrying, this fragile but powerful bond that still connects her to Julian. So Brooke heads towards the house.
When she enters, she finds Lucas in the kitchen, preparing a snack. He seems absorbed in his actions, a certain serenity on his face.
Lucas : I hope I didn't keep you waiting too long and that you're hungry.
Brooke : Sorry, I was a little cold, so I allowed myself to come in. It's so soothing, here.
Lucas : You did well. This was Julian's favorite place too. He said that the air of the ranch allowed him to forget everything, even during difficult times.
Brooke sits at the table in silence, her mind in turmoil. How to tell him, how to tell him that she is carrying her brother's child? The moment seems both obvious and terribly heavy to her. Finally, she takes a deep breath and looks Lucas in the eye.
Brooke : I have to talk to you about something... something important.
Lucas : I'm listening.
Brooke feels her hands shaking slightly under the table, so she squeezes them to regain her composure.
Brooke : It's not easy to say, but... it's something I have to tell you. You know, when Julian and I... at the wedding... well, we shared a moment together. A moment that... changed everything.
Lucas stares at her, his brow furrowed, as if he's trying to understand. Then, almost unconsciously, Brooke places a hand on her stomach, a gesture that doesn't escape him. He looks down at his hand, then back at her, his eyes widening as he realizes the truth.
Lucas : Brooke... wait, are you... ?
Brooke : Yes. I'm pregnant with Julian.
He stays silent, and time seems to stretch out in palpable tension. His gaze shifts from Brooke's stomach to her face, as if he's trying to comprehend the magnitude of what she's just told him. Brooke watches him swallow, his features hardening for a moment before he gently places his hands on the table, searching for words.
Lucas : I... I didn't know... You... you're pregnant with my brother.
Brooke : I know it's... it's huge. And I'm telling you this because I want to be honest with you, with your family. This child is going to need you...
Lucas shakes his head, still in shock, but Brooke sees something soft in his eyes, like an understanding that's slowly building.
Lucas : You don't have to face this alone. If that's what you want, if you accept our support... My mother and I, and our entire family, we'll be there for you and... for this child.
Brooke : Thank you... for not pushing me away.
Lucas : This child is the last trace of my brother, and he's also your child. So if you're ready to welcome us into your life, we'll be there.
Brooke : I think Julian would have been happy to know that you're there, for me and for my baby.
Lucas : You know, Julian often talked about his dreams... of starting a family, of passing on everything he loved. And I think that, even though he's not here anymore, you're making one of his biggest dreams come true.
Days go by, three weeks exactly, since this conversation between Brooke and Lucas. Brooke's Texan routine is slowly settling in. Between the trips to Peyton and Jake's and her visits to the ranch, she learns to live with Julian's absence and to welcome the calm of the Texan countryside. Peyton encourages her to surround herself with everything that could do her good, and she even accompanies her on certain visits to Lucas's, always watching over her with this benevolent attention. Lucas and Brooke find their rhythm. At first, everything is still tinged with a certain embarrassment, almost as if they did not know what place to occupy for each other. But little by little, a form of complicity is born between them. Maybe it's because they share the same loss, the void that Julian left, or maybe it's because, in all of this, he's the only person who seems to truly understand what she's going through.
One morning, as Brooke is about to join Lucas at the ranch, Jake gently teases her.
Jake : You look like you're going on a date. Be careful, the Texas sun could turn you into a cowgirl.
Brooke : Very funny. I don't think I'm cut out for cowboy boots and hats.
Jake : It would be change you from New York.
Brooke : Yes, it sure is. It's true that I never imagined being here, at this moment in my life.
Jake : You know, if being here makes you feel good, stay as long as you need to. Peyton and I are happy to have you near us.
Brooke : I will never forget everything you've done for me.
Jake : I want you to know that you're like a little sister to me.
These words warm Brooke's heart, and she thanks him before leaving.
Arriving at the ranch, Brooke finds Lucas feeding the horses. He sees her, and a smile spreads across his face.
Lucas : Brooke! I was just thinking about you. I wanted to show you how to run a ranch.
Brooke : I doubt I have the talent for that. But, okay, show me.
Lucas motions for her to follow him and leads her into the stables, where he shows her how to brush a horse. He explains each step patiently, and his eyes light up as soon as he talks about his passion.
Lucas : You see, the contact with them is important. Julian loved horses, he said they had a way of understanding us without us having to talk.
Brooke : He must have loved his job.
Lucas : Yes... and that's why I'm glad you're here. Because somewhere, by sharing these moments, I have the impression that he is always with me.
They continue to talk, talking about Julian, his love for the ranch, and his dreams. Brooke realizes that she and Lucas, although very different, share an implicit understanding of what they have lost. A sincere complicity develops between them. Sometimes they work in silence, other times they share memories of Julian, and this inevitably brings them closer together.
In the late afternoon, as the sun begins to set, Lucas offers Brooke a ride.
Lucas : Come on, we'll take a tour of the ranch.
He helps her into the pickup. The ride is silent, but soothing. Lucas shows her every corner, every meadow.
Brooke : Thank you for showing me all this.
Lucas : I'm really happy you're here.
Brooke feels her heart beat a little faster, a strange but sweet warmth invades her. Their complicity becomes a pillar, and she understands then that, in this ranch and with Lucas, she has found something precious.
