-This is getting annoying!
-I know.
-You should really put a stop to this!
-I know.
-She can't keep doing this!
-I know.
-I'm on my way!
-I know.- Steph hung up.
-Was that your aunt?- Rony was massaging her temples.
-Yes.
-Steph, please, just tell me what happened. I won't tell anyone, just tell me.
-Alright. I guess Care will compel you to forget anyway, so there's no harm in telling you right now.
-Okay. Start with Marissa.
-She's a vampire.
-A what?!
-A vampire.
-Vampires? Vampires exist?
-Yes.
-Are you a vampire?
-No, I'm human. Like you.
-How did she become a vampire? Did Edward Cullen bite her or something?
-No, no, nothing like that. It's different in real life.
-How is it?
-You have to drink vampire blood and die, in any way, with it in your system. In that case, you're in what's called "transition". It lasts for 24 hours. If you drink human blood in these 24 hours, you become a vampire, like Marissa. If you don't, you die. Then, for the rest of your eternal life, you look the same as you did when you turned.
-So how old is your sister?
-Eighteen.
-And how old was she when she turned?
-Eighteen.
-So it's been less than a year.
-Yeah. But it feels like longer than the rest of my life.
-And your aunt?
-Also a vampire.
-And why do you need her?
-To compel you to forget all of this.
-And Rissa can't do that?
-She can, but she's stubborn and she's mad at me. And at you.
-Why at me?
-Because you were the one she wanted to kill.
-Kill?
-Yes. I know it's weird to hear.
-It really is. Does she sparkle in the sun?
-No, she's not Edward Cullen.
-So the sun has no effect on her?
-No, she burns in the sun. But she has a special ring that prevents the burning.
-Edward Cullen needs one of those rings.
-Stop talking about Edward Cullen.
-Steph?
-Yeah?
-You said she wanted to kill me. Has she… has she ever killed anyone before?
Steph nodded. There were tears in her eyes.
-But… why don't you, I don't know, call the police or something? Or do something, anything! There's a murderer in that room, Stephanie, and you're not doing anything! You shot her with that thing, what happened? Did she die? Are you also a murderer? Is she knocked out? Drugged, like she said earlier? Do you not understand that she's clearly dangerous?
-I do…
-Well, it looks like you don't, because you're not taking any action to try and get rid of her. Why, Steph, why?
-Because I love her. She's my sister. My baby sister. The one I swore to always protect when I was three. Because she may be a murderer, but she is a good person. She's a good person despite the fact that she's not even a person! She didn't attack you because she was evil, she attacked you because of me! Because I hurt her. Locked her in there. And all she wanted was food. And about what I shot her with, it was vervain. A plant that harms vampires. She'll wake up later. Hungrier. Angrier. You don't know about my family, you don't understand. That's why I need you to be compelled. You're my best friend, Rony, but even my best friend won't understand how much I love my sister. And if loving her like that makes me a bad person, then fine. But I'd rather be a bad person than have you call her that.
Stephanie was in tears. She wasn't paying attention to them. They rolled down her cheeks, forming drops and falling to the floor.
The two of them were silent. For a long time. Really long. Neither said a single word until Caroline came in. Upon seeing her tear-streaked niece, all of Care's anger was instantly forgotten. She hugged Steph.
-What happened?
-Nothing. Just… This is Rony. I need you to compel her to forget. She and I had dinner. She went home. My baby sister didn't attempt a murder on her.
-Oh, honey…- Caroline sighed. Then looked at Rony, deep into her eyes. -You came to have dinner with Stephanie. Then you went home. Nothing special happened. There were no murder attempts. And no vampires.
-I had dinner with Stephanie,- Rony said. -And nothing special happened.
With that, she got up and went home.
Care stayed for a little while longer, hugging and comforting Steph. After that, she had to go, too. Steph was left alone, not counting Rissa's limp body. And being alone was the last thing she needed right now. She contemplated going to Alf's, but decided not to. Rissa needed her, awake or not.
