(A/N-Keep in mind, this is a fun creative-writing project. I don't know how anything about the adoption process works in the real world, so we're just going to pretend that my way IS the right way, cause hey, I made this whole thing up anyway. Oh and, just because the traction this story has gained in a small amount of time, I'll go ahead and reiterate: nothing in the HP universe is mine. Elise is though, very proud of her...)
July 31st. Elise marked it on the calendar she'd hung in the kitchen, Harry's birthday. Today was December 1st and would be the day Elise would be officially adopting Harry in the muggle world. As far as the magicals were concerned, Harry had been her son as soon as November 2nd, but that didn't matter for the other side.
She'd just finished going over any and all documents concerning Harry that were sent to her by Gringotts. His birth certificate, health evaluations, and trust fund statements all arrived promptly at eight o'clock this morning. There was one last sealed document addressed to her that arrived separately that she had yet to open but she was waiting for the evaluator to show up.
Jenna Marler was set to arrive at ten o'clock. She was hired to evaluate Elise and her home to see if it was fit for Harry to stay. It was mostly a formality, as Elise had already gone through all the paperwork and other meetings necessary, but still she agreed to it for the sake of legality.
"Little man, we need to clean up these toys before Mrs. Marler gets hereā¦" She sat next to the boy playing on their living room rug. "Or maybe not, perhaps it's better that she sees you having fun." She tapped his nose once before helping him build a tall tower to knock down.
Elise laughed as Harry swatted at two remaining stacked blocks, not wanting any part of the tower still standing. Just then, the doorbell rang. She hurried over, suddenly nervous. A quick dusting off of her clothes saw her letting the social worker into her home.
"Good morning, Elise, was it?" A smart looking woman stepped inside.
"Yes ma'am, that's me." Elise smiled awkwardly.
"Perfect. I just need to take a look around, make sure everything is in order." She set off into the house, pulling out a notepad and pen.
Elise turned to check on Harry, he was still playing happily. Mrs. Marler was heading to the nursery, so Elise sat back on the couch chuckling as Harry made the blocks float.
"Wait-" Elise whipped her head back to the stairs, seeing if she was coming back, she could hear her walking back. "Harry, no!" She whispered, grabbing blocks out of the air as fast she could.
Her thoughts were torn. On the one hand, Harry made the blocks float! Accidental magic was not impossible for babies this young, but it was on the rarer side. Elise felt immense pride for the boy, even as she scolded him lightly. On the other hand, there was a muggle in the house. If she were by herself she could've seen what else he might do. She sighed, placing the blocks back down next to him.
"Want to build another tower?" She asked, just as Mrs. Marler came back into view.
"Elise, can I ask you a few questions?" The woman asked, stepping into the living room.
"Yes, of course." She agreed, motioning for her to sit on the couch.
She did so, and turned to face Elise so that her back was almost to Harry. Elise held her breath as she prepared her questions, begging Harry not to do anything else. She wasn't sure what he was capable of yet.
"So, on your report it says you found this boy and took him in. It says you knew his mother and father." She gave her a questioning look.
"Yes. Mrs. Marler-"
"Jenna is fine." She cut her off before motioning for her to continue.
"Jenna, then. Yes, the report is correct. Unfortunately Harry was left at his aunt and uncle's house and they do not have the means to support him. And, as I later found out, he was under no circumstances supposed to be left with them anyway." Elise recounted, knowing the story was indeed strange.
"Who was he supposed to be left with?"
"Well, his godfather was the first choice, however he has sinceā¦disappeared." Elise shook her head at how crazy she must sound, this story was far-fetched at best.
"I see, and there was no one else?" Jenna wrote something down.
"No, I made the decision to take Harry off of his relatives' hands. Better he has adequate resources to grow up with, don't you think? And forcing financial struggle on anyone is quite cruel. I didn't want the son of my dear friend shipped off to an orphanage if times got too hard." Elise knew she was hopping around the truth here, but at this point all that mattered was securing Harry.
"Very well. Everything is in order then. Your house is quite beautiful, and the environment surrounding this place is safe. We've looked into your records and you seem like a good member of society. The official report will be sent out later this week. Expect good news." Jenna smiled.
"Wonderful!" Elise glanced at Harry, only to see him grinning widely at another floating block. "Well! If that's all, I will see you out!" Her smile became forced as she hurriedly motioned to the other room..
Elise stood and shook her hand, leading her to the door carefully. After she thanked her and shut the door she whipped back to Harry.
"Ooooh you're in trouble young man," she said as she marched back into the room.
Floating blocks and toys were scattered around, spinning and flying through the air. Baby Harry was giggling happily, clapping his hands as more toys were lifted off the ground.
"It's a wonder she didn't see you!" She huffed.
His big green eyes stared up at her, full of innocence. She held his gaze, trying to remain stern. She lasted all of ten seconds before she melted into excited giggles.
"Harry!" She tapped one of the floating blocks. "You're doing magic! You're a wizard!" She exclaimed, knowing full well he had no chance of not being one, and considering his heritage.
Baby Harry just laughed with her. He sat up from where he was on the floor, wobbling slightly as he reached for one of the flying toys. Elise pushed it toward him, a brilliant smile on her face. She decided to write this on the calendar as well. Right under "adopted!" was "first magic!".
"Rah!" Came the tiny voice of Harry as she finished writing it down.
He sat right by her feet, holding his arms up and making his dragon noise. Elise knelt down to ruffle his hair.
"You're not a dragon right now, silly. Do you want to put on your dragon pjs?" She laughed, scooping him up into her arms.
"RAH!" Was her only answer.
She took that as a yes. Up the stairs and into his room they went. Once he had his green onesie on again, he crawled around the floor shouting "rah!" over and over. Elise chuckled, fearing it would get old soon. As she watched him play, a letter appeared nearby.
"Another Gringotts letter?" She asked, grabbing it and ripping it open.
She skimmed it quickly, letting out an "oh shoot!" as she went to retrieve the unopened document from before. Once she had it she hurried back upstairs, sitting in the rocking chair to read it.
Miss Clarke,
My team has found information related to the young Potter's scar. Please come to Gringotts at your earliest convenience to discuss handling the issue.
There is dark magic of the highest caliber at work here, it would be in your best interest to be rid of it immediately.

Mixed emotions coursed through her then. The goblins had of course found the problem, but it seemed to be much more serious than she originally thought. However, if she knew anything about curse breaking, it was that goblins did it best. Harry would be in good hands, and soon he'd be in perfect shape once more. At least she hoped...
