Prologue
Dying had never even come close to my Top 10 Favourite Things. Even when I was down to my last penny, survival was always non-negotiable.
Then the door creaked open, and a gust of icy wind swept in, chilling me to the bone. I didn't need to look back to know who it was—I felt his presence.
The single, dim bulb buzzed, flickered, and then sputtered out, leaving me in thick, suffocating darkness.
"You can't escape," whispered a voice from behind, dripping with menace. "No matter how hard you try."
A shiver tore through me, but I clenched my fists. "Try me," I replied, my voice barely more than a whisper. Fear coiled tightly in my chest, but adrenaline coursed through my veins, daring me to fight.
And then, a pair of ruby-red eyes pierced the blackness, hovering inches from my face, glowing with a hunger that made my skin crawl. I screamed, my voice shattering the silence.
And then, all at once, the world exploded around us.
