Chapter Four: Shattered Bonds
The night Whitestone fell was one Kagome would never forget. She'd relived it a thousand times in her memories, like a nightmare she could never escape. The skies had been clear, filled with stars, and she'd stood on the castle balcony beside Percy, his hand warm in hers. They'd both laughed, whispering about the future in hushed tones. And then came the first scream.
The sound pierced the quiet, filling the air with dread, followed by the clash of steel and the panicked yells of guards. Kagome's hand tightened around Percy's, and he'd gone still, his face tense as he strained to hear.
"Kagome, you need to find somewhere safe," he'd said, his voice urgent, but she'd shaken her head, refusing to leave his side.
"I'm not going anywhere without you," she'd replied, her heart pounding as shadows began to creep over the courtyard below.
"Please," he'd whispered, his fingers brushing her cheek. "Promise me, if things go wrong… you'll get out of here. You'll survive."
But before she could answer, a deafening explosion had rocked the castle, shaking the very stones beneath them. She stumbled, her grip on him slipping as she tried to regain her balance. When she looked up, Percy was gone, swallowed by the swirl of smoke and chaos that filled the hall.
"Percy!" she'd screamed, reaching blindly through the smoke. But a pair of guards had grabbed her, pulling her away from the flames, dragging her down a corridor filled with panicked servants and fleeing nobles. She fought against them, her voice hoarse from yelling his name, but it was no use. They pushed her out into the cold night, away from the castle, away from him.
The last image she had of Percy was his silhouette in the firelight, standing amidst the crumbling stones of their home as everything they'd known was torn apart.
In the present day, the ruins of Whitestone felt haunted by that night. Though the city had been reduced to shadow and rubble, Kagome could still feel the echo of that terrifying night in every cracked stone, in the desolate silence that clung to the air.
As she moved through the castle's broken corridors, she could hear faint voices ahead. Vox Machina was gathered in the main hall, going over their plans for the night. The sounds of laughter and lighthearted banter met her ears, a strange contrast to the heavy silence that usually hung in the air.
Vax's voice carried above the others as he called out to her with a playful grin. "Ah, there's our fierce resistance leader. Kagome, you know, I have a particular talent for spotting strength and beauty, and you, my dear, seem to embody both."
Kagome couldn't help but chuckle, shaking her head as she approached the group. "Flattery will get you nowhere, Vax," she teased, but her eyes drifted unconsciously to Percy, who was watching them with an unreadable expression. His jaw was tense, his fingers tapping idly against his pistol as he observed from across the room.
Vax continued, his smile widening as he noticed the look on Percy's face. "Come now, Percy, don't look so sour. Surely you don't mind a little competition?"
Percy's lips pressed into a thin line, and he folded his arms, his gaze icy. "We're not here for games, Vax," he said, his voice cool. "And I'd prefer if you didn't treat Whitestone's matters so lightly."
Vex, standing nearby, frowned, shooting her brother a look of disapproval. She moved to Percy's side, her voice low but sharp. "Vax, maybe tone it down a bit. This isn't exactly the time or place for your… antics."
Vax shrugged, unbothered. "Oh, come now, sister. Just a bit of fun. Besides, Kagome here could use a smile or two, don't you think?"
But Vex wasn't looking at her brother anymore. Her gaze had shifted to Percy, watching the way his eyes flickered toward Kagome whenever he thought no one was paying attention, how his expression softened almost imperceptibly. She couldn't deny the pang of jealousy that twisted in her chest, a feeling she'd been trying to bury since they'd arrived in Whitestone.
Over the past few days, she'd found herself drawn to Percy in a way that was both exciting and frustrating. His quiet strength, his intelligence, the way he carried his burdens alone—they stirred something within her that she hadn't anticipated. And yet, every time she looked at Kagome, she felt the weight of the bond they shared, the history they'd lived through together. Kagome had loved him long before Vex had even known his name, and the strength of that love was evident in every glance, every unspoken word that passed between them.
She cleared her throat, forcing a smile as she turned to Kagome. "My brother's right about one thing—you've been carrying a lot on your shoulders. If there's anything we can do to help, please, just say the word."
Kagome's gaze softened, gratitude flickering in her eyes. "Thank you, Vex. And all of you, really. Just… having you here has made Whitestone feel a little less hopeless."
Vax grinned, placing a hand over his heart with exaggerated sincerity. "Well, we're always glad to brighten someone's day. Especially someone as charming as you."
Kagome laughed softly, her gaze shifting once more to Percy, who was now looking away, his shoulders rigid as if he was trying to shut out their banter entirely. The sight tugged at her heart, a reminder of the walls that had grown between them, the pain and guilt that neither of them could seem to shake.
After a moment, Vex touched her arm, drawing her aside. "Kagome… may I ask you something?"
Kagome nodded, her expression turning serious. "Of course."
Vex hesitated, her gaze flickering toward Percy before returning to Kagome. "Percy… I know he means a great deal to you. And I can see that he feels the same, even if he tries to hide it." She paused, her voice quiet. "But… do you think there's room for someone else in his heart? Or has he always belonged to you?"
The question caught Kagome off-guard, and for a moment, she didn't know how to respond. She glanced at Percy, watching him carefully reassemble his pistol, his focus intense, as if trying to block out the world around him. The Percy she knew, the boy she'd loved, was still there beneath the armor he'd wrapped himself in, but he was changed. And maybe she was, too.
"I don't know," Kagome admitted softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "Percy and I… we shared something once. Something I thought would last forever. But we've both lost so much, and I don't know if we're the same people we were back then."
Vex nodded, her gaze thoughtful. "Sometimes, I wonder if it's possible to carry a love like that for so long and still find room for something new." She offered a faint smile, a hint of vulnerability in her expression. "I suppose I'd like to believe it is."
Kagome placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Percy… he's complicated, but he's not unfeeling. And I think he's lucky to have someone like you who understands that." She glanced at him again, her heart heavy with memories and the bittersweet ache of love long held. "Maybe, in time, he'll find room for someone who can bring him peace."
Vex looked at Kagome with a renewed respect, her voice soft. "Maybe we both will."
They shared a quiet, understanding smile before turning back to the group. As Kagome's gaze landed on Percy once more, she felt the familiar ache return, but this time, it was tinged with a sliver of hope—hope that, even if they couldn't go back to what they'd once had, there might still be a way forward, for both of them.
