Back From Jupiter
This story is the result of very intense brainstorming with Shawna (Madolynhaze.) It's so fun to see what we come up with in our mediocre minds!
Chapter 2
Blue Moon the next morning…
David heads to Blue Moon early. He let Maddie sleep and dropped his kids at daycare so he could get a jump on the day. After yesterday's revelation he wanted some space and to spend time where he felt like he had complete control of things. Being around Maddie and the kids only reminded him of everything he stood to lose if the Spaceman truly landed.
David sits in his office. He makes a slew of phone calls but getting anything human resource related on NASA employees with government clearances is impossible. But it's not like he's looking for deep information. All he wants is a mailing address, some details on his actual job, maybe names of significant others. Any kind of insight as to what this guy's been up to for three years. A manila folder is open on his desk and in it are a few news clippings. All NASA press releases, featuring Crawford's frat boy mug front and center. David studies the photos. He doesn't see a hint of his son in Crawford's likeness… Nothing. Tripp is all Addison in David's eyes.
Agnes knocks and peeks though the door
Agnes: Good morning, Mr. Addison.
David: Hey, Agnes. (he checks his watch) what brings you in so early?
Agnes: Oh, you know, indigestion, back spasms… last trimester stuff…
David: Ah yes, the home stretch, won't be long now.
Agnes: (exhausted sigh) That's what they all say.
Agnes waddles in and drops a thick file of papers on his desk.
Agnes: This is the surveillance log from the last few nights for the Anderson Cat Case. And Bert wants to know if you need him to go back down to that sperm bank.
David: That can wait till next week. I'll give Bert and MacGillicuddy a break.
Agnes: Yeah, I think they could use one.
David: From each other I figure. Well, that's works out. You can have your man home for the weekend.
Agnes: That would be nice. Also, Rose the real estate agent called….. your brother's called twice and left messages already this morning. Said your private line was busy.
David: Thanks, I'll call him.
David reorganizes the files in front of him as Agnes wanders back to the door like a zombie.
David: Hey Agnes, you okay?
Agnes: (Turns around yawning) Oh, I'm fine.
David: Make sure Burt pulls his weight. Foot rubs and cookie dough ice cream were on heavy rotation in my repertoire.
Agnes: (makes a face) I'm not going anywhere near Berts feet, and he prefers Chunky Monkey.
David: Right, well he should be wrapping up the overnight surveillance next week, so he'll be at your service 24/7 after that.
Agnes: (stifles another yawn) Great.
David looks over the yellow legal pad Agnes just handed him.
David: Agnes, this looks like your handwriting.
Agnes: (Innocent) Does it?
David: Wait a minute. Have you been out on surveillance at night? Did you fill out this log?
Agnes rolls her eyes and sits down the couch deflated.
Agnes: Yes, fine. It was me! The secret is out! Berts been taking me to watch the cat behind MacGillicuddys back!
David: (regards Agnes with her head in her hands) Wow, I didn't think you had it in you.
Agnes: Well, you know how it is… one thing just leads to another.
David: How did it happen?
Agnes: Bert needed some time and space from MacGillicuddy so Bert told him that the Andersons discharged us. MacGillicuddy bought it, which doesn't surprise me. I think he lives in denial a lot. Like he only sees what he wants to see, you know?
David: I don't …but okay
Agnes: (signs and rubs her belly) Anyway, I never thought I'd be in this position. In my condition out in the middle of the night on a secret rendezvous. I didn't plan it! It's just Berts such a sweet-talker and that makes it so hard to end things…
David: What if MacGilicuddy finds out?
Agnes: I know! See, if it were just a one-time thing maybe they could work through that. But this? How will the two of them rebuild that trust? I hate that I've come between them. I'm sure on some level Bert wants to work it out with MacGillicuddy but once there's another person in the picture, it's hard to come back from that. And poor Bert with a baby on the way. He has so much on his mind…
David: I never pegged Burt to step out. I always figured McGillicuddy would be the one who struggled with monogamy.
Agnes: I can't keep this up night after night. MacGillicuddy needs to know what's going on behind his back. I told Bert if he doesn't tell him today, I will…
David: How do you think that's going to go over?
Agnes: Who knows? Berts been very irrational lately. Moody. I'm sure it's because of the baby coming soon and I've told him just because a new child comes along it doesn't mean I'm gonna love him any less… (she shakes her head) men are just so.. emotionally incapable of life, you know? And then you add a baby to the mix…
David: You think Viola won't be a good father?
Agnes: I think he'll be great as long as he doesn't have a nervous breakdown first. Mr. Addison, how did you feel when you saw a Tripp for the first time? Did you feel like it changed you? Did it feel weird that there was an actual extension of yourself existing on the planet?
David realizes that this question hits differently considering what's happened. In a way, he's glad she's asked. Remembering what's important makes him feel better about the night before.
David: If it changed me, Agnes, it was for the better. It wasn't just me I was responsible for anymore. And you remember back then, how hard it was between Maddie and me. Tripp made us realize what was important. He made us a family.
Agnes: That's nice, Mr. Addison.
David: Cut him some slack Agnes. Some guys freak out more than others when they become Dads.
Agnes: Yeah, maybe it's affecting his relationship with MacGillicuddy, too. Thanks for listening, Mr. Addison. I guess you do know where I'm coming from.
David: Sure thing
Agnes: That's why I didn't say no when he asked me to go on surveillance with him. I want him to know he can depend on me. That we're in this together. I'm sure that's how you and Ms. Addison feel about each other.
David: (distant) Yeah.
Agnes: (heading for the door) Don't forget about your brother's calls. And Ill tell Ms. Addison about Rose, too.
David: Sure. Thanks Agnes.
Agnes leaves and David reflects on the conversation he just had. He and Maddie had been through so much. They'd depended on each other in some way, shape or form since the day she first stepped into his office. The thought of her shutting him out of something as deep as this hurts. David knows it might be chauvinistic, by he prides himself on being the protector of his family. This makes him feel like Maddie doesn't trust that he can fulfill that role.
There's a knock at the door. Maddie breezes in dressed in a pale-yellow dress and her hair pulled back in combs. As always, he's distracted by her beauty but not enough to forget his hurt feelings or to discretely close the folder of the Sam investigation he's been pulling together.
Maddie: Morning Partner, I woke up this morning and my entire family was out the door.
David: Well, everybody was up, so I figured why prolong the inevitable?
Maddie comes around to the side of his desk.
Maddie: You know, my mom is home. She could have kept the kids today. You wouldn't have had to take them to daycare.
David: It's fine, I feel better having them close anyway. Besides, your mom likes the day to herself. She is on vacation after all. Let her sit by the pool, go shopping.
Maddie: Wow, you're just a wonderful son-in-law, aren't you?
Maddie gives him a quick kiss and sits down on his couch.
Maddie: So I was going to go over our schedule with Agnes and plan out our day. Maybe we could do some leg work on that Leslie Simms case. Head down to that sperm bank...?
David: The Leslie Simms case? I thought you didn't want anything to do with that.
Maddie: Well, yes, that's true I don't. But I just figured…
David: That seems like a pretty quick change of heart.
Maddie: (shrugs) It's not a change of heart, it's just I don't really like us working alone and independently any more than you do. (She walks over and perches herself on the corner of his desk) I was also thinking we could plan something just you and me this weekend. While my mom's still in town, she could take care of the kids. Not overnight or anything, but we could have a nice dinner, a beach stroll…
David: Speaking of spending time. Looks like I'll be doing mine at Eclipse tonight. It's Thursday.
Maddie: (trying not to take the change of subject to heart) Yeah, I figured.
David shuffles some papers around his desk.
Maddie: Listen, Rose left a message with Agnes that she wants to get together. I'm thinking she found us some properties up in Big Bear for us to look at. I'll see if she wants to get together.
David: Sounds good. Go tonight while I'm at the club.
Maddie: But don't you want to go too?
David: That's okay. I can sit this one out.
Maddie can read the room. David's very distant just like he was last night. She remembers that when he came to bed, she rolled toward him and while he held her like he always did, it was different. He was tense, disconnected. Maddie tries to push it out of her mind. She stands and makes her way to the door.
Maddie: Okay… well…like you said maybe I will see what she's doing tonight. Since you're at the bar and all.
David: Good.
Maddie: And I'll ask my mom about this weekend…
David: (David doesn't look up from his notes) Sure, you do that.
Maddie: Sooo, I guess I'll just be in my office…
David knows he's being cold and aloof, but he can't help himself. He doesn't look at Maddie because he knows if he does, he'll cave and he doesn't want to let her off that easy.
David: Fine.
Maddie slowly leaves. David takes a moment, puts his files aside and then remembers his brother's phone calls. He picks up the phone and dials.
David: Hey Asshole, what you keep calling me about?
Richie: Morning sunshine! You working tonight or what?
David: Do I have a choice?
Richie: No. But listen to this, Gretchen, last night didn't wear underwear. She wore this pink micro mini and when she sat on the barstool… oh my God I thought I'd go blind.
David: That's beautiful, Rich. What are you really calling me about?
Richie: Really, I'm just making sure you're coming in tonight. Stevie gets nervous on Thursday mornings because he thinks you won't show up.
David: I said I'd be there, and I'd be there.
Richie: You sure it's okay with the big blonde? You're always squawking about leaving her with the kids.
David: No, I think this week it works out for the best. I could use a night out.
Richie: I won't ask. Listen, take it easy on our gal and I'll see you tonight.
That Night: Dinner at Hedges
Maddie meets up with Rose. Rose is a real estate agent who Maddie has known since they both lived in New York during Maddie's modeling days. She is a cute blonde that has a little bit of a nerdy but adorable vibe to her. Maddie is very relaxed around her.
Rose: I'm so glad we could meet. I don't think I've seen you since Emily was born.
Maddie: I know, I've been so busy. It's sure is true what they say, two kids is much different than one.
Rose: How's David with all of this? I saw him briefly the other night at Eclipse when I was dropping paperwork off to Richie for the final sale. He definitely looked in his element.
Maddie: I'm sure that's accurate. He was a bartender back in the day when he lived in New York so it's definitely back to his old roots. So, tell me what's new with you? You sounded like you had a lot to tell me.
Rose eyes her over her wine glass then puts it down thoughtfully.
Rose: You're right, I do want talk to you about something. And I'm not sure how it's going to go over.
Maddie: Wow, this doesn't sound like a conversation about real estate. What do you mean? You're not sick or anything are you? Nothing's wrong?
Rose: No, no, it's not anything like that. I got a phone call from somebody. They're looking for a house in Los Angeles. He and his wife are moving here. Or at least be here part of the time.
Maddie: Okay, well don't hold out on me. Who are you talking about?
Rose: It's Sam Crawford.
Maddie nearly spits out her salmon across the table.
Maddie: You're kidding? Why would he be doing that? He didn't say anything about me, did he?
Rose: Well, that's part of why I wanted to see you. I mean, when he said who he was on the phone, I almost hung up on him. God that whole drama was just awful. What he did to you… (she shakes her head at the memory.) I remember you crying on my kitchen floor after he locked you out of your apartment.
Maddie: Yeah, that wasn't my best moment.
Rose: Who could blame you? You trusted him and he took advantage of you in every way. You were successful and independent, and he couldn't handle it. There's a name for men like that.
Maddie: Extreme narcissist.
Rose: A controlling asshole. It sounds like he still is. There was a weird part of me that wonders if he's still bitter, like if he has some kind of fixation or score to settle with you still.
The assessment makes Maddie a little nervous, but Rose is prone to be overdramatic.
Maddie: A fixation? Really? That seems extreme.
Rose: Well, he was asking a lot questions. He wanted to know all about you and David. How long you've been married, about the kids. He was very interested in Tripp.
Maddie takes a moment to dab the sides of her mouth with the napkin. Like her mother, Rose has no idea about Sam's visit three years ago to Los Angeles and the brief affair. She figures no harm in coming clean about it now.
Maddie: Rose, I have to tell you something. I know it's hard to believe after what happened with Sam that I would even speak to him again, but a while back he came to Los Angeles. One thing led to another...
Rose's jaw drops
Rose: What the hell does that mean?
Maddie: What do you think it means?
Rose: Oh my God, you slept with him, didn't you?
Heads turn in their direction.
Maddie: Rose! Shh! Yes.
Rose slams the rest of her wine before leaning across the table to whisper loudly
Rose: Are you bat shit crazy!?
More glares. Maddie shushes her again
Rose: Do you remember how he left you? And it wasn't even just a messy breakup. He intercepted a business contract of yours. And elbowed that girlfriend of hers to take your place.
Maddie: In that case he did me a favor. Had I been the Magic Night Girl, it would have derailed my career. What did Vogue Magazine compare it to? Gas station bathroom air freshener?
Rose: Either way, he didn't know that at the time. He's a scum bag. All because you wouldn't marry him and have his kids. What a pig!
Maddie: That's the thing…
Rose: What's the thing?
This is too horrible for Maddie to think about, much less discuss. But she has to now.
Maddie: Tripp
Rose's eyes widen.
Rose: Maddie, are you telling me, Tripp is Sam's son?
Maddie: (full denial) No! No! Of course not!
Rose: Thank God.
Maddie: But that doesn't mean he doesn't think he is.
Rose: Huh?
Maddie: I think he wants to try to take Tripp from me. He's threatening to file a custody suit…
Maddie gets caught up in her words, realizing when she talks about everything it becomes more real. She takes a deep breath.
Maddie: There's supposed to be a hearing tomorrow actually. I haven't told a soul.
Rose is stunned by everything she just heard. She looks likes like she might cry.
Rose: Oh, Maddie. Can you stop him?
Maddie: Well, I'm damn sure going to try. So how did you leave it with Sam? What did you say?
Rose: I refused to work with him. He told me he was sending his wife out to check out properties. He even asked about Eclipse as far as a tax write off. I said both he and his wife, whoever she is, could go to hell. Maybe he'll hop on his spaceship and flee the galaxy.
Maddie considers that and finishes her wine. They try to enjoy the rest of their dinner and distract themselves with discussion of properties for Maddie and David in the mountains.
Later that Night
Maddie gets home from dinner with Rose and hates that David isn't there. Fights over cases at work are one thing but when things are strained with him at home, her whole existence is shaken. This situation with Sam is as stressful as they come. She wants to see David, talk to him and make things right. She decides to go down to the club.
Aware of the questionable reputation Eclipse has, she wants to look the part. She changes into a short black skirt, a flimsy white tank top, stiletto heels and David's black leather biker jacket. She takes advantage of her mother being there with the kids and calls herself a cab.
Eclipse Night
It's busy. Close to 11:30 on Ladies Night so the vibe is people on the make three drinks in. David is standing behind the bar smoking a cigarette, nursing a beer and watching the crowd. Women have been hitting on him all night and as it gets later, they become more aggressive despite the fact David proudly wears a wedding ring. The guys at the bar who are regulars and have gotten to know David over the past few weeks tease him about all the female attention. They know he's married but have no idea to whom. Only Richie and Steve know. David likes it that way. It keeps his worlds separate.
Biff: Hey Dave, so do Steve and Rich here charge a cover for nights you appear? It seems like you're the main attraction. Every female eye is on you and it ruins it for the rest of us.
David: (laughs) Come on guys. Back when I played the game, I struck out here and there...
Richie: Not that I've witnessed, little bro. You should see some of the prime catches he's reeled in in his day.
Hot brunette twins, Kelly and Stacy slide up to the bar and order martinis. They make eyes at David.
Stacy: Hey Dave, Kelly and I were wondering what you were doing after work? Thought maybe you'd want to come over for after hours.
David: Oh really, what did you two have in mind?
Kelly: I'm sure the three of us could put something fun together.
David: (chuckles and goes about making drinks) Don't think so, but thanks for asking.
Mike: He's a married man, ladies. But I'm beginning to wonder if he's just bullshitting us. The girls like him but is he good with the girls?
Dan: I have an idea. Since we're sitting here watching this show, how about we make a game out of it.
Steve and Richie hear a bet brewing. They join in and play along.
Richie: My bro is a pro with the ladies. I'm telling you right now any girl in the place he has banging him in the bathroom in five minutes tops.
David is floored. What the fuck is Richie setting him up for?
David: Those days are long over. I'm telling you. I'm out.
Steve: Her! That girl, right there!
They all turn to Maddie who has strolled in and cleared a path as if parting the Red Sea. Every male and most of the female eyes in the place are on her. David's jaw drops both in shock at how she's dressed but that she's there in the first place. God damn is she the most gorgeous thing he has ever seen. He adjusts the budge in his pants
Biff: Holy shit is that…
Mike: That's that model I think… the Blue Moon girl. What's her name?
Dan: Hey guys, is that Maddie Hayes the model that just walked in here? God Damn!
Richie: Looks like we have a target!
David looks at his brother, sees the twinkle in his eye and realizes Richie has a plan. Richie slaps him on the shoulder and David plays along.
Richie: Okay Bro, Blue Moon girl is your target. I bet everyone in earshot 100 bucks you can get her to leave with you in under five minutes. You in?
David: I don't know….
Dan, Mike, Biff and a few of their friends place their money and take seats at the bar. They are ready for the show. David nods his agreement with his eyes still fixed on his wife.
David: I got this, boys. Hold my beer.
David walks up to her. They've worked undercover so long that they know each other's signals as to when to play cool. David smiles and extends his hand.
David: Hey, blondie blonde. Excuse me for being so forward but I was so knocked out by you when I saw you walk in, I had to come greet you personally. I'm Dave, the bartender. Wanna step over and I'll make you something special.
She plays along and smiles back. The "fuck me" one his seen on her magazine covers that makes his dick twitch.
Maddie: Sure. Dave is it?
David: That's right. And I gotta tell you I'm a big fan of Blue Moon shampoo. Have a bottle of it right now in my shower with your face on it. Nothing like soaping myself up with those gorgeous blue eyes of yours staring back at me.
Maddie: That's quite a vivid picture you paint.
David: You oughtta know, honey. (He licks his lips and gives her a once over) What's a girl like you in a place like this for and dressed like that by the way?
Maddie: (Maddie puts on seduction mode herself) I dunno. I've heard things about this club and I thought I'd look the part. I also heard they have a devastatingly handsome bartender that all the ladies go crazy over. Thought I'd see for myself. So, about that drink you promised…
David: What's your pleasure?
Maddie: I'll let you decide.
David: You look like a white wine girl.
Maddie: I was thinking of something a little bit more dangerous tonight. How about a vicious virgin?
David suppresses a chuckle. He takes her hand and leads her to the bar.
He makes her drink, aware of the guys' eyes watching their every move. He can tell she is too when she throws an icy glare in their direction. Turned on as hell, he slides the drink in front of her.
David: I see you're married. What's your husband think about you by yourself in a place like this?
Maddie: He knows I can handle myself just fine.
David: Looks like you have a lot of admirers.
Maddie: Oh, them? (Looks down the bar and rolls her eyes) Please. Besides, I only have eyes for my husband.
David: (David lights a cigarette) Lucky guy.
Maddie: He's out working tonight. A second job actually. During the day we work together… Anyway, thought I'd come on out. You know, pass the time until he comes home.
David: I'm sure sparks will fly when he gets there.
Maddie: That's what I'm hoping. The thing is, I was feeling kind of lonely tonight. And lately, I'm not sure he's been very happy with me.
David: I'm sure that's not true. In fact, he probably walks around wondering what a girl like you is doing with a man like him and how he got so lucky to have you and the kids.
Maddie: Kids? What kids?
David: (Catches his role play blunder. He smiles, amused as hell) Oh yeah, right. Well, you know what I mean...
Maddie: See, I work in the same office with him all day and he's just so… irresistible. Like today, I was thinking how sexy he was in this grey suit and this purple tie of his that makes his eyes look so green. Anyway, we were sitting there listening to a client and all I wanted him to do was to take me in his office and well… (she shrugs and bats her hand) I'm sorry. You probably don't want to hear this.
David: (blowing out an inhale of his smoke and then leaning on the bar closer to her) Try me.
Maddie looks around and leans in herself. She takes a drag of his cigarette that shocks David but also finds oddly arousing… and adorable when she almost chokes on the exhale.
Maddie: Well, sometimes on an especially busy or stressful day, I'll go into his office. He'll be sitting behind his desk, jacket off, tie loose with his sleeves rolled up and I slide onto his lap. That's when I like to take his hand and slide it up my skirt just so he knows I'm not wearing any underwear, and he'll touch me just how I like it…
David takes another long drag of his cigarette and blows it out slowly. Maddie loves the reaction she's getting from him, so she keeps going.
Maddie: Sometimes that's all he needs to do to, you know, (playing bashful) "relax" me. He's that good with his hands. But other times, when we both need more, he'll lay me across his desk and we do it right there… but… (she leans even closer toward his ear, like what she's about to say is a scared secret) sometimes I get too loud, and he has to take me in the bathroom…
David: Oh yeah, what does he do to you in there?
Maddie: Well… I don't know if I should tell you. It's very… intimate.
David: (enthralled) Tell me.
Maddie: See…he does this thing where…
Steve: Yo Dave! Piss or get off the pot. People are thirsty.
David ignores Steve, his eyes still fixed on Maddie.
David: Keep going, Blondie. Tell me about the stuff he does to you...
Rich: Dave! Time is money…
Maddie: Looks like you're needed…
David: (winks at her) Sounds that way, doesn't it?
Maddie glances around at the men at staring at her. Despite feeling like she's on display she enjoys her cocktail. David delivers a few drinks and whispers stuff to a few men who are watching them intently. Finally, David returns.
Maddie: Can we go somewhere more private? I feel like a piece of meat.
David: What did you think coming in here looking like you do?
Maddie: This was for your benefit. Not anyone else's.
David leans across the bar so he's almost nose to nose with Maddie.
David: By me, you mean the bartender you've never met who's thinking about all the things he wants to do to you when he takes you home… that is if you're willing.
Maddie again glances down the bar at the men watching very closely. David senses her uneasiness. He walks to the end of the bar, delivers a drink then goes to the other side to meet Maddie. He stands over her like he's making a very intimate pitch. The men are all watching like the dogs they are. Richie and Steve are trying not to laugh and blow the whole thing.
David:(leaning to her ear, unable to resist the slightest brush of his lips over her lobe) So, don't get mad at me. But if we play this right, we could make a decent kitty this evening.
Maddie: What do you mean?
David: There's a bet on the table that I couldn't get the Blue Moon Girl to hook up with me.
Maddie: (Maddie laughs) Oh yeah? How much?
David: 600 bucks right now. I'll share it with you if you let me lay one on you.
Maddie: (Amused) Really?
David: And I'll give you the whole thing if you let me take you into the bathroom.
Maddie: And what do we do back there?
David: I don't know, but I got all sorts of ideas with you dressed like that. I've never seen you in my jacket before.
Maddie looks over her husband's shoulder at the group of guys at the bar staring at them. She also spies Richie and Steve hiding knowing smiles at the other end of the bar.
Maddie: 600 dollars you say?
David: Yup.
Maddie slips her hand around the back of the head and lays a wet sloppy one on him. When they finally come up for air, David whispers with his forehead on hers.
David: I gotta be honest, I was kidding about the bathroom at first, but you kiss me like that in a room full of people dressed like you are and with that fuck me look on your face… I'm definitely reconsidering.
Maddie: 'Fuck me' look? A nice girl like me?
Maddie takes his hand in hers and guides him through the crowd to the back of the club. They both feel every eye in the place follow them. Maddie brings him to the bathroom and shuts the door.
Maddie: I got to tell you this is very arousing. I've never gone home with a bartender before.
David: (laughs and eyes her like a meal) Who says we got to go home?
Maddie: What do you mean? Like, in here? I thought this was for show.
David: (backing her against the wall) I'll show you something all right.
Maddie: David, what if somebody walks in?
David: Not happening. (He reaches round her and locks the door) We're all alone.
Maddie: (wrinkles her nose) Gross. Don't tell me you've done this kind of thing before.
David: Seduce my wife and mother of my small children in the bathroom of a seedy nightclub? Never.
Maddie: Well, when you put it that way.
He unzips his jeans, hikes up her skirt and feels for her panties. When he realizes she isn't wearing any, she smiles. She knows he has a thing about commando.
David: Well, well, well you showed up here with an agenda, didn't you? Black leather no underwear…
Maddie: Maybe
David: Leave that coat on, will ya? Kind of completes the whole vibe.
Maddie: You turned by a bad girl?
David: Damn straight and I'm gonna teach you a lesson. Could get a little rough.
David has her pinned against the wall with his hard cock pressed against her. His arms are on either side of her. He has her trapped and she loves it.
Maddie: (whispers) Oh yeah? How rough?
He chuckles and hoists her up against the wall and with one swift move, buries himself inside of her. She cries out when he does but the sound is muffled by his mouth on hers. She holds on for dear life and kisses him furiously.
David: Is this what you wanted? What you came here for? Me inside you like this?
Maddie smiles and nods stunned speechless by how incredibly erotic this all is. In a place like this, with people on the other side of the door. David's grunts when he slams into her. He's fast and deep. His stubble scrapes against her cheek and his familiar scent of spicy aftershave mixed with the cigarettes and beer is intoxicating...
David: This rough enough for you baby? I can tell you like it. Me fucking you like this...
When she opens her eyes, she sees he's watching her and he's smiling with beads of sweat forming at his brow. His eyes are dark. Like a sexy stranger who's possessed her husband, but who she knows and trusts completely.
With his hand in her hair, he gives it a tug, lifting her chin to have access to her neck. She gasps and his trembling lips form a smirk.
David: Come on, blondie blonde. I know you want to come. I can feel it. I know every inch of that beautiful body of yours. Don't fight it…
Maddie gulps a mouthful of air. She can't believe how "so much" this all is. Her legs are numb and her skin burns. It hurts but feels like extasy. To keep from screaming she bites down on his shoulder. He moans, then slams into her even harder.
David: Oh, yeah? You bite me like that? Now I know you need to come now, don't you?
Maddie: David…
And because he knows exactly what she needs, his lips attach themselves to that spot on her neck, just below her hairline. The one David swears is connected to every nerve on her body. She comes instantly, and when she does, he does too. They brace themselves against the other, shuddering and panting, spent and satisfied.
Finally, David lets her feet down gently onto the floor then leans against the wall to catch his breath. Maddie steps away to straighten herself. Pull down her skirt… smooth down her hair…
David: (panting) Wow! I can't believe you let me do that.
Maddie: (also panting) Why not? All you did is give me what I asked for.
David looks over his shoulder with a questioning smile.
David: What do you mean?
Maddie: I just wanted some reassurance from my husband tonight. Is that wrong?
They just look at each other acknowledging the tension that was between them that they both are over. David goes to her and pulls her into his arms.
David: No, it's definitely not wrong, Maddie.
Maddie: I just need you to tell me we're okay.
David: (pulls away and looks at her) Is that why you're here?
Maddie: It's just after yesterday…I'm sorry…I shouldn't have…
David: I'm working on that "unapproachable" thing. And I know sometimes communication isn't our best featured talent.
Maddie: Oh, I don't know. It depends on what kind of communication we're talking about.
David laughs and smooths her hair down.
David: Yeah, there's certain kinds we're very, very good at. Which reminds me, you're ready to walk out of here with me with some sort of dignity?
Maddie: Are you kidding? I'm the envy of every woman in a place.
David: You know, I'm getting all sorts of ideas on how to dress you up at home. How about one of my Eagles jerseys...
David leans in for a kiss… but there's a knock at the door.
Richie: Okay you two, you've won your bet. You think you can step on out of there? A line is forming.
David: Can I buy you a drink?
Maddie: It's the least you can do after what we just did…
Maddie and David stroll out of the bathroom hand in hand through a mostly oblivious crowd except for the five or six patrons at the bar. They are still thinking David just scored with the Blue Moon girl but now the cover is blown.
Steve: Hey you too! The jig is up. Come collect your kitty before we spray you down with seltzer!
Dan: So the truth comes out! Dave is married to the Blue Moon Girl. How in holy hell did that happen?
Maddie sits down at the bar and David introduces Maddie to the crew. They collect their money as David won fair and square. Maddie stays for a drink and David arranges to leave with her early. She waits by the door while David gets the BMW from the parking structure.
Just then a cab pulls up to the curb. Maddie is almost knocked over by the realization of who steps out of it.
Gretchen Singer.
She's fifteen plus years older and looks as trashy as she ever did. She greets people like she's a regular. It occurs to her that maybe this is where David's Magic Night stench came from when he came home the other evening. Maddie braces herself when Gretchen approaches her in the doorway.
Gretchen: Well, well, well, Maddie Hayes. The search is over, and our paths finally crossed.
Maddie: Hello Gretchen. I wasn't aware you were poking around for mine.
Gretchen: Are you sure? My husband and I have been trying to contact you. We have some matters to discuss.
Maddie: What are you talking about?
Gretchen flashes her wedding ring.
Gretchen: I'm married to Sam Crawford.
Maddie takes this all in. Is this a crazy coincidence or something more sinister? Maddie tries to be casual.
Maddie: What are you doing here, Gretchen?
Gretchen: I'm the new part owner of Eclipse.
Maddie: (blindsided) What?
Gretchen: We own it! Trying to put down some roots here since our homebase will be Los Angeles now. We thought this was a perfect endeavor.
Maddie: You did or Sam?
Gretchen: Both of us. His money, my blood sweat and tears. We work together. Come on, I don't have to tell you about that. You and your husband share a business, right? By the way, I can see why Sam was so bent out of shape by him. Lord, is he a handsome man.
Maddie: Stay away from my husband and my children, you understand?
Gretchen: See its funny you mention family. Because it's why we came out to California in the first place. Family is very important to us.
Maddie: I can't imagine what that has anything to do with me.
Gretchen: It has everything to do with your son. I've spent a fair amount of time with your husband, and he's showed me the little guy's picture. Don't get me wrong, he's absolutely adorable but I don't see a resemblance to him at all.
Maddie: That's because he looks like me. His mother.
Gretchen: And his name is Tripp, is it? I imagine it's a nickname of sorts for David Addison III. (she laughs) You might have to rethink that one.
Maddie: You're delusional, Gretchen.
Gretchen: Like I said, Sam and I are thinking of the future and having a family is important to him. Having biological children of my own is not an option I'd choose to explore, so you can imagine how happy he was to discover you gave birth to Tripp.
Maddie leans in close so Gretchen understands she means business.
Maddie: You listen to me. Stay away from me and my family. You're more than welcome to any of my sloppy seconds business or otherwise but you will not get anywhere near what is mine. Are we clear?
Over Gretchen's shoulder Maddie sees David drive up.
Maddie: If you excuse me. My husband and I are leaving.
Maddie gets in the car quickly and is mindful to shake off the scene that just transpired. David pulls away from the curb thankfully oblivious.
David: What a night, huh? Sorry, I made you wait, I just had to cash out a few people.
Maddie: It's okay.
David: And I want to hear about what you and Rose talked about tonight at dinner.
Maddie: (Nervously) What do you mean?
David: The properties in Big Bear. That's why she called you, right?
Maddie can feel his eyes on her, but her brain is too tired and fried to support a conversation. Maddie takes in a long, jagged breath, torn between wanting to strangle someone or collapse into tears.
David: You alright, honey?
Maddie nods and manages a smile.
Maddie: I think that Viscous Virgin went my head a little. That's all.
David is not convinced. After a minute or two of silence, he pulls over to the side of the road and parks then turns to look Maddie in the eye.
David: Hey.
Maddie: Hey what?
David: I'm happy you came out to see where I go and what I do some nights. I know tonight was kind of fun and a little crazy.
Maddie: Yeah…well…
David: But you never have to worry, you know? I mean, don't ever think that I'm doing things on the down low or talking to anyone I shouldn't be. I'm just doing a job and a favor for my brother. That's all.
Maddie: I know.
David: I love you, Maddie.
David kisses her before he pulls away from the curb. He takes her hand and when he does, she expects to collapse into tears but instead she is infused by a surge of anger. How dare Sam and his sleazy wife attempt to upend her life.
Try me, Sam. Just try me.
Maddie: I love you, David. And I'm the luckiest girl in the world to go home with the sexiest bartender.
David laughs and kisses her palm. They drive off into the night toward home.
Later that night
It's 1am and Maddie can't sleep. She replays what happened earlier between she and David at the bar and smiles to herself. They went to bed together and made love again quietly even though her mom was clear on the other side of the house.
David sleeps beside her snoring softly, his arm is loosely draped over her like it always is. She remembers how when they were first together the move made her feel claustrophobic. Now she relies on it because it makes her feel safe.
Maddie double checks that he's still deep in sleep before slipping out from his embrace. She pulls on her robe and walks down the hall past her children's rooms to an office she and David share. Inside there's a desk, file cabinets, a computer. All the nuances to run their business from home if need be. She pulls an address book from one of the drawers and thumbs through the pages. When she finds what she's looking for she picks up the phone receiver and dials.
She knows no one will answer, and that's what she wants. She doesn't want to talk about it, she just wants to leave a message. Then she can go to sleep and feel like she's doing something proactive to protect her family and not lying in wait for something to happen to them.
An answering machine. Maddie heaves a breath and hears a beep.
Maddie: Hi, it's Maddie. I heard you were back in town and I was thinking the two of us should catch up. Actually, I need to meet with you as soon as possible. I was wondering if we could meet in the morning. You can probably tell by my voice, it's kind of urgent so like first thing-ish. And I'd like to keep this between you and me, if you don't mind. Anyway. I'll see you tomorrow morning, hopefully. Okay, bye.
Maddie heads back the route she came checking on her children along the way. She feels relieved. But also terrified of the conversation that awaits her tomorrow. She comes back into the bedroom. Slips off her robe and gets back into bed next to David.
David: (90% asleep) kids okay?
Maddie: Yeah. Everything's fine.
She pulls his arm tight around her and settles in. Finally, she can close her eyes.
The Next Day Maddie's House
Emily has been up since 4 am with a fever Maddie figures is from teething. Maddie says she has an appointment with Mrs. Anselmo, so she brings Tripp to daycare and goes into Blue Moon. David stays home with Emily at least until Mrs. Hayes gets back from a brunch date with a friend.
David is in the kitchen dressed in a Laker t-shirt and gym shorts holding a screaming Emily while he digs through the freezer looking for a teething ring. He is un-showered and unshaven and running on three-hour sleep as this has been going on most of the night.
David: Hang on baby girl, Daddy's finding your thingie. Man oh Man, do you have your mother's lungs…
Emily wails as if to prove his point. Mercifully he finds the ring and holds it to her lips. She takes it and begins to calm down.
David: That's it. Daddy's got you.
Emily is happy for the moment but just for good measure, David preps a quick bottle in case she needs to be topped off. Like a master, he conducts his business with one hand while he gently cradles his daughter with the other.
Finally, David walks through the living room, humming to her trying to coax her back to sleep. He is just about successful with Emily resting on his shoulder when the doorbell rings. Emily startles and screams all over again.
David: (To himself) Are you kidding me?
David places the bottle on the table in the foyer then goes to the door. He doesn't bother looking to see who it is and instantly regrets not doing so when he realizes who is on the other side.
Sam: (Smiling) Hey David, we meet again.
David is dumbfounded. Completely taken off guard and in no way phased by the deafening sobs Emily again unleashes against his ear.
David: And on my doorstep. What a coincidence.
Sam: Your doorstep (Sam chuckles) well I guess we live in a community property state. Don't suppose the lady of the house is home?
David: Why?
Sam: Thought I'd pay a visit. Catch up. We have some business to discuss, and I think you know what it is.
David: Can't think of a single thing.
Emily cries even louder. David recognizes it's her hungry cry, and he looks around behind him for where he put the bottle down.
Sam: Looks like you could use some help.
David ignores him and heads back to the living room to look for it. Sam follows him in and sees the bottle on the foyer table. He brings it to David.
Sam: Looking for this?
David sees the bottle in his hand and reluctantly takes it. The last thing he needs is Sam doing him any favors but he's desperate to calm his poor unhappy daughter. He sits on the arm of the couch, cradles her and puts the bottle in her mouth.
David: (whispers) You're okay, sweetheart.
Sam: What's wrong with her? (Sam winces at her shrill squeals)
David: She's teething. She's hungry too but it hurts her mouth to take the bottle…
Sam: You seem pretty knowledgeable. How'd you maneuver this cushy house hubby job, anyway?
David: (over the wailing) Does this sound cushy to you?
Sam: You know what I mean.
David: Well, it's not a job. She's my daughter not a client. I'm here being her father while Maddie had some things to do at work.
Sam: And let me guess. Maddie had an appointment she couldn't miss? She didn't happen to say who her 10:30 was, did she?
David: What are you talking about?
Sam: Maddie was supposed to appear at family court downtown this morning to answer a motion I filed, but she didn't show.
David is blindsided. He thinks about the quick conversation with his wife before she rushed out the door that morning. There was no misunderstanding. She blatantly lied to him.
Sam: I can see by your expression you had no idea this was going on. Anyway, out of the kindness of my heart, I offered to reschedule. I'm sorry it's coming down to this.
David: Down to what?
Sam smiles at him and looks down at a now sleeping Emily in David's arms.
Sam: That was quick.
David: She's overtired. Been up with Maddie a lot of the night. (David stifles a yawn) We're all pretty wiped out.
Sam: Sounds like we both could use a cup of coffee. (Sam points to the kitchen) I got it. Don't worry, I know where everything is.
David shakes his head. He puts Emily in a bassinette in the living room and Sam returns with two cups of coffee.
Sam: So, I can tell you're surprised to see me. I thought about calling before I dropped by but I figured this was at the point where a face to face meeting was necessary. I'm trying to play nice, David.
David: Playing nice, huh? Are you talking about that passive aggressive game where you send a birthday gift to my son and sign the card "Daddy?"
Sam: Passive aggressive game? You sound a little paranoid…
David: Accurate if you ask me. Maddie told me she tried to contact you when she found out she was pregnant, but you never responded.
Sam: Well, it didn't seem important then.
David: And it does now? Let me guess, the new American Space Hero Poster Boy secured a wife and now he needs the kid to complete the picture.
Sam goes over to the fireplace and looks at the family photos on the mantel. He picks up a picture of Tripp and smiles.
Sam: Maybe I want the whole thing? Nothing wrong with that, right? Either way, he's my son, David. Look at the kid…
David: That boy is all Addison to me.
Sam chuckles, replaces the picture and takes a sip of his coffee.
Sam: Look, I admit that was a pretty sore loser when you walked off with Maddie. I waited around a long time for her to come to her senses. But now I realize that maybe I was wrong to assume she was the same woman that I used to know… or maybe you had her so confused she didn't know what was good for her.
David: Maddie's happy, Sam.
Sam: Well, maybe that's what she tells herself.
David: What do you care anyway? Aren't you a newlywed? Where does wifely stand in all of this?
Sam: She and I are on the same page as far as my son. See, she and I operate in a much different way than you and Maddie do, it seems. We work together. She wants very badly to have a child. My child…
David: Don't see where Maddie and I can help you with that.
Sam: Pregnancy is hard for a woman in her line of work. And neither of us are really baby people. Bringing home a toddler seems like a perfect option for us...
David: (incredulous chuckle) Yeah, I get it. Kind of like how an older dog is easier than a puppy… You gotta be kidding me...
Sam: Actually, I believe you've met my wife Gretchen, at Eclipse. Your brother's new not-so-silent partner.
David is both shocked and disgusted at everything he's just heard. He gets the feeling this is some sort of strategized set up but not sure how it all fits.
David: So, why the cloak and dagger? What are you doing stalking my brother too?
Sam: You'll have to ask Gretchen about that. But as far as Maddie goes, I'm sure I don't have to explain her to you. She likes to stonewall and it's very hard to get through to her sometimes even when it's obvious to everyone else what's in her best interests.
David: Concerns about Maddie's best interests are my department, not yours. And what you're saying sounds like a loosely worded threat to me.
Sam: All I want to do is to get to know my son, David. Imagine our positions reversed. Then maybe you can see where I'm coming from.
David: I can sympathize to a point, but somehow I get the feeling this is more about rattling Madde's cage than anything else.
Sam: What makes you say that?
David: Well, like you said, you lost. And I think I realize now that you never really loved Maddie. In the same way you loved yourself, anyway. I think you love the idea of having the epitome of a trophy wife and a family.
Sam: Trophy wife? You've seen Gretchen, right?
David: The Maddie knock-off that doesn't like underwear? Yeah, I'm aware. (ha!)
Sam: Look, I'm not looking to be a homeworker. And I understand maybe you're resistant because Maddie would see that a life with me is truly what she wants after all.
David: Ah…now we're getting down to brass tacks…. This is all to stay connected with Maddie somehow?
Sam: What I don't want is to be ignored. I warned Maddie over and over that if we couldn't handle this amicably…
David: Wait a minute. What do you mean you warned her "over and over?" She said the only time she'd heard from you was when you sent that gift from out of the blue.
Sam: (Sam smiles) David, I've been trying to get in contact with her for months. I've left messages. I've sent letters. I even sent a certified notice letting her know that I've retained legal representation to pursue this.
David: (shakes his head and clenches his teeth) You're way off base, Spaceman.
Sam: Am I? Let me ask you this. If it were me standing there and you came to the door wanting to know your son. How would you feel if Maddie and I were blocking you from doing that? I don't get a sense that you would give up or take no for an answer.
David doesn't have an answer for that.
Sam: Anyway (Sam hands David a card) the hearing's been rescheduled for two weeks from today. We want to make up for lost time and start being a family. It will be good to put all this confusion behind us.
David is speechless. Not sure if he's angrier at the situation or Maddie for lying to him about the scope of it in the first place. Sam puts his empty coffee cup down and heads for the door but pauses at the bassinette on his way.
Sam: You have a beautiful daughter. Don't worry, Gretchen and I will make sure the children stay in each other's lives.
David follows him with his eyes as he leaves. He's seething. He has a few questions for Maddie…
Betty Russell's Office Day
Maddie sits across from Betty Russel as she reads through the contents of the certified envelope. Maddie gazes around the office and all the pictures of poodles on the walls. She hopes Betty still has her legal chops. Maddie has stayed in touch with her over the past few years and knows she's mostly given up on the profession for her love of her new husband Nathan and their dog breeding business but she still dabbles in cases that interest her.
Maddie: I'm sorry I called so out of the blue. You must think I'm crazy.
Betty: Don't apologize. That's what friends are for. I just can't understand why you didn't tell me about this sooner. You know family law is my specialty. Well, it was….
Maddie: I know, I know, I should have. I was just in shock and then I was scared. I didn't even know if you were practicing anymore.
Betty: But Maddie, this hearing was at 10:30 this morning. You could have at least told me about it beforehand so I could have gone on your behalf.
Maddie: I should have, but I just panicked. Tell me Betty, what am I up against?
Betty: I was going to ask you the same thing.
Betty tosses the envelope down, folds her hands and looks Maddie in the eyes.
Betty: Let's get to the nitty gritty, shall we? Is it likely Sam is Tripp's father?
Maddie: (This is hard) That's what I told by my doctor in Chicago, yes.
Betty: Told. So no definitive tests?
Maddie: An ultrasound. But to be honest in my heart, I've always questioned it. I try not to think about it now and it's never been an issue for David. (Maddie heaves a deep breath) He's been a wonderful father. Tripp is our son. That's it.
Betty: Well, the good news is according to the law, Tripp IS David's son. David signed the birth certificate, so in every way, he's his father. Sam can take all the paternity tests he wants, but he has no right to mandate Tripp taking one.
Maddie: So, Sam can't force the issue.
Betty: Not legally. But in my opinion, there's a bigger matter to deal with.
Maddie: What's that?
Betty: Are you willing to keep something like this from your son, potentially for a lifetime? I mean, it's not likely Sam will go away and at some point, Tripp will be old enough to know there's a question. Surely, you've thought of that?
Maddie: (wiping away tears, frustrated with herself) I've come to realize I'm pretty good at talking myself out of things, Betty.
Betty: And what about David? How does he feel about all this?
Maddie: That's the other part of my problem. I haven't told him anything about it. As a matter of fact, I've gone to great lengths to keep this from him.
Betty: Why?
Maddie is full-on crying now. She shakes her head and gazes heavenward.
Maddie: I don't know. I guess I just don't want anything to wreck what we've worked so hard to build. We've been so happy…
Betty reaches for the Kleenex box on her desk and walks around her desk to hand her a wad of tissues.
Betty: Well, my advice to you Maddie, is to go home and tell David everything you've told me. You two need to figure out a plan forward. I'll call the court and let them know you have legal representation. I'll finagle an arrangement to reschedule the court date to answer this.
Maddie: Thank you
Betty: I understand this is unsettling, but if Sam is Tripp's father, wouldn't it be all right to let him get to know his son?
Maddie: The thing is, Betty, I'm wondering if he has ulterior motives. I'm not so sure it's about being a father but getting back at me for not being his wife.
Betty: Well, Maddie, I'll do what I can. But I think the first thing you need to do is go home and come clean with David.
Maddie: I suppose you're right.
Betty: I'll call you when I hear anythingfrom the court. Sound good?
The women's stand and hug.
Maddie: Thanks again, Betty. I knew I could depend on you.
Betty: You can depend on David too. He's a good man, Maddie. He'll keep a level head and forgive me for saying so, but he keeps yours level too…
Maddie: (smiles.) I know. Believe me, I know.
Maddie's Office Blue Moon Late Afternoon
After Sam's visit, David feels the need to track down Maddie ASAP. He decides to take advantage of Ginny being in town and leaves Emily with her when she gets back from brunch. He heads out to Blue Moon.
It's pushing three o'clock by the time he gets there. According to Agnes, Maddie told her she's been dealing with Leslie Simms and the sperm bank case all day. David knows that's not the truth and that Maddie's lied to Agnes too.
David sits at Maddie desk waiting for her. His feet are up and he stares at the door like an animal lying in wait. He knows this is not going to be an easy conversation and is weirdly relieved it will be happening at the office. It will inspire him to keep his voice down, given how angry he is. Finally, he hears Agnes greet Maddie on the way in. Maddie opens the office door and stops dead in her tracks when she sees him.
Maddie: David!
He doesn't answer but he can tell by her timid expression, his anger is written all over his face.
Maddie: I…um didn't expect to see you here. What is it? Is Emily okay? Is she…
David: (bitter) She fine. At home with your mother.
David gets up and walks around her desk slowly like he's sizing her up. His hands are in his pockets and his forehead wrinkled in scrutiny. Maddie knows she's been had. She puts her briefcase on the glass coffee table and tries to be casual. She can't look at him.
David: (Soft and calculating) How was Mrs. Anselmo?
Maddie: (weakly) I didn't see Mrs. Anselmo.
David: Because you were down at the sperm bank all day? Agnes told me.
Maddie doesn't answer. She can't. She takes off her pink jacket and drops it on the couch behind her. When she turns back David slips his hand under her chin and makes her look at him. She flinches at his touch.
David: You look like you've been crying.
Maddie: No, I'm just tired. I was up all last night with Emily.
David: No, I'm pretty sure I know when my wife's been crying.
He runs the pad of his thumb over her cheek. Maddie closes her eyes and turns away.
David: To be honest, I can't really blame you. Must be pretty scary to have somebody sue you for custody of your child and have to deal with it all by yourself.
Maddie heaves a deep breath and he drops his hand. His red face tells her his anger is about to boil over…
Maddie: David please, don't be mad. I can explain…
David: Dammit Maddie! (throws his hands in the air and paces the length of this office.) Why the hell are you playing this game with me? Lying to me about things I need to know about!
Maddie: I'm not playing any games David! And I don't mean to lie to you!
David: Oh no? Tell me right now where you were this morning. And before you open your mouth, I sure as hell know you weren't here at the sperm bank or with the Anselmo's which is where you said you were headed when you left home…
Maddie: (softly) I went to go see Betty Russell.
David: Betty Russell? You mean the former divorce attorney who now pedals poodles? Why? What for?
Maddie: She used to be one of the best family lawyers in the business. I wanted her to get her opinion on some things.
David: What things Maddie? Tell me to my face, what things did you want to discuss with her? And don't bother lying to me because I already know.
Maddie just starts crying again. She looks heavenward and shakes her head.
Maddie: David, I wanted to know what we were up against before I involved you. I was trying to protect us!
David: Maddie, that's my son. I'm already involved. And we've been through this!
David stands behind her desk leaning against the credenza with his arms folded and his head hung. Maddie looks at him full of regret.
Maddie: How did you find out anyway?
David chuckles and Maddie realizes without seeing his face this explanation will be a doozy.
David: I had a visitor this morning. Back from outer space.
He looks up at Maddie and she hates the hurt in his eyes.
Maddie: Sam came to the house?
David: When you didn't show up in court today he wanted to track you down. You can imagine I didn't have any information to give him. Given my wife hadn't told me a damn thing about it.
Maddie: David, I'm so sorry.
David: Yeah, me too.
Maddie: It's a moot point anyway…
David: The hell it is! (David paces back toward her his voice getting louder again) According to him he's been trying to contact you for months. He's called, sent letters and you knew full well legal proceedings were coming!
Maddie: David, please stop…
David: A week ago you stood in the kitchen, looked me in the eyes and told me that gift was the only contact you'd had with him. Why lie to me?
Maddie: It wasn't a lie it just wasn't totally the truth. I never responded to him David!
David: He's serious, Maddie! He wants a paternity test to establish some sort of custody of Tripp.
Maddie: Well, he can't have that. I already talked to Betty about that.
David: The law might be on our side but Sam and Gretchen certainly aren't.
Maddie: You know about Gretchen?
David just blinks at her. Completely knocked over with all Maddie has kept from him.
David: YOU know about Gretchen?
He's almost nose to nose to her now and she can't stand to look at him. Maddie steps away and moves around him.
Maddie: Gretchen Singer. Richie's new silent partner is his wife, David. I saw her last night when we were leaving Eclipse.
Discussing this out loud makes Maddie realize how this is all coming together. Her intuition told her that there was more to Sam's agenda than just getting to know his son.
Maddie: Gretchen Singer and I go way back. We lived in New York together before my career took off. She was never successful. Magic Night was the only thing she ever did, and they told her to her face they only signed her because of our resemblance. They fired her three months later, telling her if they couldn't have me, they didn't want anyone and of course she blamed me for it.
Maddie (con't) Anyway, after that she was pretty much fixated on making my life hell. When I rejected Sam's marriage proposal the first time, he took up with her, or they took up with each other. I suppose now you could say they are coconspirators.
Maddie (con't) I know I've never mentioned her before. It's all part of the life I chose to forget. But seeing her last night made me realize that she's just as much the mastermind behind this as he is.
Maddie realizes David is still standing there glaring at her. But she can tell it's more hurt than anything else. She goes to him and tries to slip her arms around him but he steps away.
Maddie: David, please understand I didn't mean anything malicious by keeping this from you. I just didn't want it to change anything in our lives.
David again paces the room trying to keep his cool and think rationally.
David: I need to know what we are up against. I mean, how probable is it that he's really the father?
Maddie: I hate even thinking about this.
David: I hate it too, but we have to, Maddie!
Maddie exhales loudly and sits down on the couch.
Maddie: According to Dr. Hill in Chicago, Sam is the father. I never said that to Sam. I only let him know I was pregnant when I first found out. He never responded so I never pressed the issue. I told you that.
David: Well, forgive me if I now question the details of your story.
Maddie stares at her hands and shakes her head.
Maddie: I just can't believe it's come to this.
David: What did Betty say anyway? I should have been there with you…
Maddie: She said legally their hands are tied because you are his father. But sooner or later Tripp will realize there's a question.
David: She's right, you know.
Maddie: And the only way we can know for sure is if you take a paternity test.
When Maddie starts crying again, David begins to soften. He grabs a tissue off her desk and hands it to her and sits down beside her.
Maddie: David I was only with Sam once and I have no idea for the life of me how a test could be done with any kind of accuracy. I just figured that if I wished hard enough and believed in my heart he was yours, he would be.
David: He is Maddie. No matter what, Tripp is still my boy.
Maddie: So what are you saying? You want to take a paternity test?
The beeping of the phone distracts them. They realize Agnes wouldn't interrupt them unless it was urgent. David reluctantly gets up and goes to Maddie's desk. He presses the button on the speakerphone.
David: What?
Agnes: Leslie Simms is on the phone.
David: Take a message we got stuff to deal with here…
Agnes: I can't. I mean, she can't.
David: Spit it out Agnes
Agnes: She' at the police station. She's just been arrested for murdering her biological father.
