Pain shot throughout Aizen's body. With gritted teeth, he pulled his fist back and bashed his knuckles into Gogeta's forehead. Gogeta remained in place; his fiery gaze switched to an icy glare. He yanked his arm from Aizen's body, grabbed the fist in his face, then flung Aizen to the ground.
While Aizen stood with his wound clutched, Gogeta floated down next to him. "Heal yourself and stop wasting time. Show me everything you've got before I put your lights out."
The gaping hole in Aizen's stomach closed in an instant. After he wiped the blood from his lips, purple energy burst from his body. He unclenched one of his fists and raised five fingers to the sky.
"Wake from your millennia of restlessness!
Bare your teeth and come forth from the depths of the underworld!
Forged in fire and sheathed in anguish,
Rise and conquer!
Blackened clouds to the east, scorched grass of the west!
Sit among your throne of clouds!
Cast out the unworthy and reclaim your place amongst the Earth!
Hado #99, Goryutenmetsu!"
The ground rumbled beneath their feet, then gave way to five pillars of purple energy. Erected to the ceiling, the pillars morphed into roaring dragons. They grew in girth as they absorbed Reishi around them.
Gogeta crossed his arms. "For such a grandiose display, these dragons leave much to be desired."
Aizen growled and threw his arm down. "Raaaaahh!"
The dragons raced toward Gogeta and opened their mouths wide to reveal sharpened teeth. Gogeta uncrossed his arms and charged small energy balls in the fingertips of one of his hands. With no effort, he flicked them into their gaping mouths. Before they collapsed onto him, the bodies of the dragons expanded and detonated around him. Once the dust settled, Gogeta stood without a scratch to show for.
Aizen teleported behind him with his Zanpakuto pulled behind his head. Eyes of fury peered at the Gogeta. He cut through the wind to strike his opponent in the back.
Gogeta lifted a single finger and stopped his blade. The shock wave from the slash sent a wave of sand hurling away. He twisted his head to Aizen, and without another motion, the blade burst into several pieces.
While Aizen stared in disbelief, Gogeta smiled. "Oops, looks like I shattered Kyoka Suigetsu."
He flared his eyes open, causing several blows to connect with Aizen's chest and face. After he staggered back, Gogeta rushed forward and smashed his face. Aizen slid down into the sand, but once he sat up, Gogeta appeared before him with blue energy between his palms.
"Big Bang Kamehameha!" The energy wave swallowed Aizen and left a long trail of burnt sand in its wake. Gogeta folded his arms once more and waited for his enemy to surface.
After a moment of silence, energy shot from underneath the sand. Aizen emerged with several bruises and cuts, but no look of contempt accompanied them. Glazed-over pupils stared through Gogeta as if he wasn't there. The slit in his forehead opened to reveal another eyeball that bounced from side to side. His eyes rolled upward, and his head slumped to the side. Blood dripped down from his third eye socket as his face cracked.
The strange development led Gogeta to tilt his head and furrow his brow. "Um, hello? Earth to Aizen, everything all right over-"
A column of energy erupted from Aizen's body, followed by extreme gales and anguished screams. He bent over and grasped his skull as new wings forced their way out of his back. The beam of light solidified, then shattered, flooding the surrounding sand with blood. He stood straight and unveiled his latest transformation: the last form he took against Ichigo in their battle. His face, legs, and arms had all become black, while his right arm had fused itself with his Zanpakuto. In addition, two holes appeared in his abdomen; eyeless heads lined the end of each of his six wings and hissed. Eyes in the center of each wing opened wide with an empty stare.
The only movement Gogeta's body made during Aizen's transformation was in his stomach. He contorted his face to show his disgust. "Urgh, color me repulsed. If your strength matched how scary you look, you'd be living in my nightmares."
Aizen fixed his white pupilless eyes on Gogeta. The heads attached to his wings gaped their mouths open and flaunted sharp teeth. "Hogyoku, this is inexcusable, isn't it? We will make him suffer for trying to make fools of us."
Spheres of energy formed in the mouths of the heads behind him. They fired their blasts, but Gogeta countered by releasing a wide, blue aura, reducing each ball into particles that vanished into the air. Aizen leaped toward him and thrust his sword. However, Gogeta lifted a finger and blocked all subsequent slashes with nonchalant ease.
Before Aizen switched his strategy, Gogeta snatched him by the throat and pulled him close. "I'm giving you one last chance to hit me with everything you've got. I suggest you do it now before I lose my patience."
Aizen's scowl deepened as he growled at his stone-faced foe. His wings surrounded the fused fighter and formed a purple energy ring around Gogeta's neck, producing a shock wave that reverberated throughout the castle. Two other energy rings formed above his head before solidifying into white matter. The heads on Aizen's wings revealed their cavernous mouths and charged balls of energy larger than their skulls.
"Your arrogance will cost you dearly," Aizen said. "Take in your last moment while you can."
"Quit flapping your gums and hit me!" Gogeta shouted.
"Die, you putrid Saiyan!" The eyeless heads fired their blasts. A dome of blistering heat and orange light spread for kilometers. Once the explosion and ensuing clouds of smoke subsided, Aizen floated alone atop a bottomless pit of bubbling magma. With his foe out of sight, a smile emerged while he caught his breath.
"I am destined to be the strongest," he said. "Once I destroy the other pests, I will take my rightful place as ruler, and I shall do it unopposed."
A hand rested on his shoulder. "Slow down there, big guy." Aizen spun around; his mouth gaped open at Gogeta. "Don't act so shocked to see me. You didn't think that attack would hurt me, did you?"
"Not… a scratch?"
Gogeta grinned and gripped his hips. "Well, you singed a few strands of my hair, but what else did you expect? As theatrical and painful as your last transformation was, it gave you diminishing returns in power."
"Damn you!" Unable to contain his frustration, Aizen's energy burst outward. However, his aura shrank down toward his body. "What?! How can this be?"
"Hmph, I think the Hogyoku is pulling out of your alliance." Gogeta dropped his arms and clenched his fists. "It almost seems unfair to smack you around like this, but after what you did to the others, I couldn't care less."
Gogeta dashed toward his enemy, landing a barrage of strikes that reached faster than Aizen's multiple eyes perceived. In a dominant display, Gogeta kicked Aizen around the battlefield with minimal effort and negligible opposition.
A punch to his jaw forced him to soar across the air, and a sharp knee to the back of his head sent Aizen sliding face-first into the sand. His arms wobbled as he pushed himself to his hands and knees. While he took deep exhales, Gogeta floated down behind him and lifted an open hand above his head.
A flashing sphere with radiant colors and sparkles formed in his palm, then condensed. Gogeta squeezed the ball; bright light shined through the cracks of his hands.
Aizen fumed as he stood."Mere Saiyans cannot defeat me. I transcend all life!" He leaped forward to strike. "I am the one who should decide how this world should be!"
Aizen stopped and gasped. His target vanished.
"That's enough," Gogeta said from behind. "It's over."
Aizen turned to attack, but halted when he noticed twinkles of energy from underneath. He looked down at his abdomen and witnessed himself disintegrate. With the fibers of his body being torn from the inside out, Aizen stretched his mouth to let out a pained wail, but no sound came. In a fraction of a second, the attack reduced his being to sparkles that dissipated with the wind. Before the Hogyoku fell into the sand, Gogeta snatched it out of the air.
"Incredible," he said. He held the orb up to his eye and scanned it from all sides. "This little sucker is indestructible. Oh, well." Gogeta tossed the Hogyoku into the sand and turned away. "You know, for someone with instant regeneration, you're taking rather long to come back."
The orb rocked back and forth in the sand before a horde of white matter sprouted, then reformed into Sosuke Aizen. He sported a pale white body and torn white shihakusho without his Zanpakuto in hand. He rose to his feet with disheveled hair between his eyes and a deranged grin. One eye had remained pupilless, while the other reverted to purple sclera. Half of the sharp teeth from his previous form remained on his bottom jaw.
With a sigh, Gogeta turned. "It doesn't end with you, does it?"
"You can't get rid of me, and now you're nearly out of time," Aizen said. "My next metamorphosis is at hand. You may think you've bested me, but this is the calm before the storm. I've already fused with my Zanpakuto, and now the Hogyoku will give me far greater power than your simple mind can imagine-"
A red spike of energy pierced through his chest. "What the hell is this?!"
"Just when I was about to let the others get their licks in, the seal activated. Darn."
"A seal!? But how could a seal have been-" Aizen narrowed his eyes, then dug his fingers into his palms. "Damn you, Kisuke Urahara. No matter, Kido of this power can't restrain me."
The white matter that covered half of his body shattered to reveal his normal features. In addition, his hair reverted to its previous length.
"No." More spikes sprouted across his chest. "But the Hogyoku-"
"Is telling you your time's up," Gogeta said. "This is reality. You've lost, Aizen."
After Aizen stared at his twitching hand in disgust, he let out a yelp when several red, cross-shaped spikes shot from his back. Though he bent over in agony, he rose again. His rage faded and gave way to the chilling expression he came to be known for. A sly grin crept onto his face, prompting Gogeta to raise an eyebrow.
"You're right, I concede," Aizen said. "You are the strongest, for now at least. However, this doesn't mean I renege my claims to Universes Six and Seven. I can't allow that when every living thing in these worlds prostrates to mindless and lifeless overseers."
A rock-like structure rose from his feet and surround him. "Even in losing this battle, I've still won. The Hogyoku is still in my possession, and more importantly, I have conquered death. I haven't been rejected. I've just been told to fall back; to exercise more patience. Now that I've witnessed the power I need, it will only be a matter of time. Whether it takes months or a hundred years, I will grow stronger, I will kill you all, and I will reign as the strongest in the multiverse. That is inevitable. That is destiny."
The structure that surrounded him swirled above his head and formed into a white, star-shaped barrier. Gogeta shut his eyes and huffed out. "Jeez, what a head case."
His body glowed before the fusion separated back into the base forms of Goku and Vegeta. The two walked forward and marveled at the structure.
"How the mighty have fallen," Vegeta said. "This is supposed to hold him?"
"I hope so." Goku tapped his knuckled against the barrier. "Seems sturdy to me. It should keep him in here for a while."
Vegeta turned and peered into the distance. "Good. Take him while I go get the container." Goku nodded and threw the barrier over his shoulder. "One more thing, Kakarot. Please tell me we're done with this fusion nonsense."
"Hehehe, hopefully. The way our sons are growing, we probably won't even have to fight these battles."
Vegeta returned a smirk. "Hmph, that'll be the day."
While Vegeta flew off toward Aizen's tower, Goku headed back toward the group. The Soul Reapers and injured Saiyans all waited with bated breath to see what had become of their enemy. As Goku drew closer, their eyes honed in on him and tried to make out what he carried on his shoulder.
"Is that Aizen?" Ichigo asked. "Is he in there?"
Once Goku glided down to the sand, he smiled and gave the group a thumbs up. After all the fighting, searching, and stress they experienced for close to three years, no one grasped that Sosuke Aizen had been apprehended. However, Hitsugaya stepped toward Goku with caution.
"Aizen is… trapped inside of this thing?" Toshiro asked.
"Yup," Goku nodded. He swung the barrier to Hitsugaya. "Take a look. Just try not to poke yourself."
Toshiro hesitated, but grabbed onto the structure and held it for himself. It had a bit of weight, but he sensed Aizen inside. "But… he's so weak." He stuck the barrier into the ground, unable to take his eyes off it.
"He definitely won't be able to hurt anyone for a while."
"So, it's really over?" Ichigo asked. "For real this time?"
"Mhm," Goku said. "And we couldn't have done it without you guys."
The massive weight that dragged down Ichigo and the others had now been lifted, and each person expressed their relief their own way. Some cheered, others smiled, and the rest let out a long overdue sigh.
As the Soul Reapers soaked in their victory, Goku walked over to Goten and Orihime and knelt. "How's it going over here?"
Goten covered his mouth and coughed before he grinned through a wince. "Well, I feel like I shredded every muscle in my body, but I'm just glad you guys gave him the beat down he deserved."
Goku's joyous expression grew serious. "You probably did. Using the Kaioken like that could've killed you, and it probably would've if your body hadn't stopped you. You've gotta think before you act, son."
Goten's eyes sank along with the corners of his mouth. "I know. I'm sorry, Dad."
Goku smiled once more to cheer him up. "Guess you'll have to master god Ki when we get back." After Goten chuckled, Goku turned his concern to his other son. "And how are you feeling, Gohan?"
Gohan sat up with a bandaged torso and arms. "A little sore, but I'll manage. By the way, where's Vegeta?"
"I was wondering the same thing," a voice called from behind. Goku turned to Shuhei Hisagi, staring at him with his eyebrows pushed toward the center of his face. "Your partner wouldn't be assisting the Espada, would he?"
"Probably, but I wouldn't worry about it," Goku assured him. "He's on our side now."
"After all the atrocities they've committed, none of them should walk free." The lieutenant pushed the guard of his Zanpakuto with his thumb, revealing a part of the blade. "If they aren't apprehended and tried by Central 46, then they need to be executed right here and now."
"Woah, woah, woah, hang on. If it wasn't for Grimmjow, we wouldn't be standing here having this conversation. Just because he did bad things in the past doesn't mean he can't change. Vegeta's done just as bad, if not worse, things for most of his life, and now he's our greatest ally. At least give him a chance; if he turns out to be a bad guy, we'll come back and stop him."
"Give him a chance? But he's-"
"Shuhei," Captain Komamura said beside him.
Shuhei spun to Komamura. "But Captain, they can't just walk away with no consequences. Where is the justice in that?"
"We gave Captain Tosen the chance to return to the light, and had he lived, I'm sure we would have argued for him to be spared of punishment. If people want to redeem themselves, we must give them that same chance."
Shuhei gritted his teeth together, but sheathed his sword and turned away. "Fine. I hope we don't regret this in the future."
Goku grinned. "We won't. You're just gonna have to trust me on this one."
After he retrieved the vessel of souls, Vegeta landed next to Grimmjow. He took a moment to gaze at his fallen friend, then pointed a yellow energy ball in his direction. He shot the blast at Grimmjow, causing his body to glow with a yellow light. Once the glow faded, Grimmjow's eyes blinked before opening.
"What the… hell?" he muttered as he turned his head. "Vegeta? Where's Aizen?"
Vegeta folded his arms. "We've dealt him with. Now stand up before I put you back to sleep with a different blast."
Grimmjow stood with soreness. "Why didn't you finish me?"
"You saved my son's life, and since he's not able to return the favor right now, I'm doing it myself."
"I shouldn't go on and live, not after betraying our race. What I did was disgraceful and I can't-"
Enraged, Vegeta shoved him in the chest. "Where the hell is your pride?! Have you forgotten that you're a Saiyan?! I can't believe you, of all people, are acting pitiful. Stop licking your wounds and pick yourself up!"
Grimmjow lifted his eyes and pushed Vegeta's forehead with a finger. "Don't you dare talk to me like that, you little pipsqueak! The bastard that took everything from me, beat me to a pulp, and now he's gone. What the hell am I supposed to do now?!"
"You do what I did when Frieza killed me. You relocate and get stronger."
"So where do I go? I'm supposed to roam this fucking wasteland for the rest of my life?"
Vegeta smirked. "I'm sure you have a means of leaving this place. As for where you should go, I've heard that there's a planet of Saiyans in this universe. How about you go live amongst them?"
"You're not serious. How could I ever show my face to them after what I did?"
"If one person can defeat their entire population single-handedly, then they need someone to strengthen them and refine their skills. Be that person; train them and make sure they can fight for themselves. That will be your atonement. I'm sure you can even find a good sparring partner out of one of them."
Grimmjow's scowl relented into a grin. "Restoring Saiyan dominance? Sounds like a dream come true. This universe is gonna wish I died. But before I leave, there's one more thing I wanted to say."
"Hm? And what is that?"
"I watched the footage of you killing Nappa, Dodoria, and Zarbon more than a hundred times. I've never laughed at anything harder in my life, especially Nappa. The way he tried to beg for his life and that stupid face he made when you blasted him… priceless."
Vegeta chuckled. "You didn't enjoy it when I destroyed Cui?"
"How could I forget that one? He tried to play you for a fool and then he ran for his life. Ha! What'd you call that one? Dirty Fireworks? I couldn't breathe when I saw that."
The two Saiyans shared a hearty laugh, and as Grimmjow prepared to leave, he shared his parting words. "The next time we meet, Prince, I'm gonna be the one to kick your ass. I won't stop until I'm the strongest."
"Well, you better get started. You've got plenty of ground to cover."
Grimmjow smirked, then flew up through the ceiling to the far stretches of Hueco Mundo. Vegeta departed back to the group, and once he landed, he turned his attention to his son. Though he lay unconscious, his life had been saved, and that fact alone gave Vegeta comfort. He walked toward Goku, who sat while Captain Unohana restored his energy.
"Well, are we ready to leave?" Vegeta asked.
"Sure," Goku said. "You don't wanna sit for a bit and get patched up?"
"Whis can do that for us. As long as we're done here, I'd rather get started on getting these souls out of this container."
A voice called out from behind Vegeta. "Um, excuse me, Goku, Vegeta?"
"Hm?" Vegeta faced Ichigo behind him. "You're that boy Trunks trained with."
"Yeah, my name's Ichigo."
"Well, what is it?"
"I just wanted to ask you guys, when you fought against Aizen, did you feel any sadness coming from him?"
"Sadness?" Vegeta's eyebrows perked upward. "You're going to have to explain."
"You sensed it too, huh?" Goku asked.
"Sensed what? What the hell are you talking about?"
Ichigo elaborated on his question. "When I fought him years ago in the Soul Society, I thought I sensed a loneliness in his blade. It seemed like he was born with incredible power and intellect, yet he couldn't find anyone that viewed life in the same way he did. Filling his void with more power only pushed him further and further into isolation."
Hitsugaya's eyes lit up. "Are you trying to say that we should have sympathy for him?"
"Not at all. I'll never forgive him for what he's done, but sometimes I wonder why he would feel lonely. Maybe deep down, he wanted to lose his power and be an ordinary Saiyan or Soul Reaper, just so he could finally relate to someone. Instead of the Hogyoku rejecting him, it could've been that it granted a subconscious wish."
Soi Fon couldn't help but jump into the conversation. "That's an interesting take if you disregard the fact that Sosuke Aizen wants to rule the world alone. He'd manipulate and cut down anyone, even if they were close to him."
"I'm going to agree with her," Vegeta said. "Any 'sadness' you probably felt was because he lost out on his chance to create his 'perfect' world."
Gohan stroked his chin. "Hm, you might be you're onto something. Even though he'll definitely stop at nothing to get what he wants, maybe he tried convincing himself that reaching his goal would satisfy that desire when, in reality, it would do the exact opposite. Whatever it is, it's complicated."
"Ichigo," Urahara called. "If Aizen found someone who shared his ambition and intellect, would that steer him off of his course?"
Ichigo turned and pondered for a few seconds. "Maybe, but then again, when you see the world the way he does, he probably… would want… " His voice trailed as he noticed a figure far away. "What in the world? Hey, I think somebody's over-"
Before anyone turned in that direction, the figure vanished and arrived in front of Ichigo. A large fist rushed toward him, but blocked with his Bankai. Mouths gaped open once they laid eyes on who attacked them.
"Yammy?!" Ichigo sputtered. "But how?!"
The Espada's other hand glowed red as he lifted it. "Now you're mine!"
Before he fired his Bala, Ichigo thrusted his hand into Yammy's stomach and propelled him away from them.
"There's no way!" Goku said. "I thought you killed him, Vegeta."
Frustration shook Vegeta's fists. "That damn Aizen. I could've sworn I did, but he must've used his hypnosis to fool us. He mocks me at every chance he gets, but I'll finish this once and for all."
"Hang on," Ichigo said. "Let me handle him."
"This is my battle, kid. Stay out of this."
"But you barely have any strength left. Please, this is the least I can do after all you guys have been through today."
Vegeta scowled at the thought of someone fighting for him until Goku interjected. "Come on, Vegeta. He trained hard just like we did; let him show off what he can do. Now take a seat and get healed up."
Though he grunted in protest, he sat next to Goku and allowed Isane to restore his energy. "Just know that I'll kill him myself if you're unable to."
Ichigo nodded, but as he prepared to face Yammy, Hitsugaya stepped out in front of him. "Wait. Let me go with you."
Ichigo agreed until his eyes caught hold of the melted ice flowers above Hitsugaya's back. "But Toshiro, your Bankai's hitting its limit. Let me-"
"Who said this was my limit? I left my Bankai activated for a situation such as this."
Goten sat up and leaned forward with a grin on his face. "Here it comes."
Once the last petal above the captain's back withered, he collapsed to the ground. Ichigo leaned over to help, but stopped and gasped once he noticed Toshiro's body change. His wings shattered, while ice coated his shoulder blades, forearms, and legs from the knee downward. Most notably, his facial features matured. He stood, and no one could contain their astonishment as they gazed at his lanky body.
"Goten, can you do that?" Gohan asked.
"Not yet," he said. "I haven't had enough time to master my powers."
Ichigo closed his lips and smiled. "Well, I guess you don't have to hear any more short jokes. I think you even got an inch taller than me."
"It's only temporary," Hitsugaya said in a deeper register. "I'm not sure why, but in Daiguren Hyorinmaru's matured form, the increase in power also ages my body. But enough about me. I think our friend out there is waiting for us."
"Right." Ichigo released his power and departed with Hitsugaya. As Goten watched the two sail into battle, a recent observation boggled his mind.
Toshiro's gotten pretty strong, but Ichigo… I don't even understand him. Trunks and I got stronger with Bankai, but now he's just as strong as we are. Either Trunks is a great teacher, or Ichigo's a freak of nature. Knowing Trunks, probably the latter.
While Goten continued to ponder, the Soul Reapers mobilized to join Ichigo and Hitsugaya.
"Hey, Soi Fon," Yoruichi said. "You don't plan on letting those two steal the spotlight, do you?"
"Hmph, absolutely not," she said. "Pounding his face in is exactly what I need right now, and I won't let them hog the last chance I can get at that." Before anyone could act, an army of skull-masked Arrancar appeared and surrounded the group. "Looks like I spoke too soon."
Vegeta groaned and threw his forehead into his hands. "Please tell me this is the last surprise he left for us."
Out of the hundreds of clones that circled them, the leader, Rudbornn Chelute, towered over them. Ten branches with pale flowers protruded from his back, while branches wrapped around his waist and extended as roots to the ground. He held a lightning-shaped rod in his hand.
"None of you will leave Las Noches," he said. "The Exequias have come for your lives."
Renji Abari scoffed at his claim. "The way I remember things, Rukia had a pretty easy time freezing those branches of yours. With these captains and lieutenants here, handling you will be too simple."
"You'd be foolish to assume the same technique will work again. It doesn't matter who you have on your side. The godlike ability of Arbol will overwhelm you all soon enough."
Soi Fon stepped out and glared at Rudbornn. "I don't have time to entertain a weakling like you. Get out of my way before I make you."
"Your brash nature will be your undoing, Captain."
She smirked and unsheathed her blade. "And your stubbornness just signed your death warrant. I suggest you spawn as many of your clones as you can; killing you within a minute would be too boring."
While the Soul Reapers raised their spiritual pressures for battle, Goku and Vegeta sat back to watch their allies take on the last of the Arrancar.
"Shouldn't we help them?" Goten asked. "I know they're strong, but there's just so many of them."
Captain Unohana turned and beamed at him. "They've prepared just as diligently as you have. The captains and lieutenants are more than capable of handling this matter."
"Yeah, but-" Goten's eyes bulged. A cold, eerie feeling from behind Unohana's smile sent shivers down his spine.
"There is no need for concern. Please stay still and continue to have your injuries healed."
Terrified, he squeaked a reply. "Hehe… Yes, ma'am."
The Saiyans sat back and watched the Soul Reapers prepare to fight and secure their means of escape.
A/N: Hi everyone, it's been a minute, but I hope you're all doing well. Sorry for the delay, I've been a bit busy. This chapter had a lot of points to hit, and that made it a bit hard to write at times, but here we are, and I hope I conveyed what I needed to convey
