Summary: I had recently rewatched Thor: The Dark World and that scene where Thor visits Loki in prison, gave me an idea for a potential scene between Natsu and Zeref.
Pairings: Brotherly Natsu/Zeref, Implied Zeref/Mavis, Mentions of Motherly Mavis/Natsu
Natsu was currently within the lowest depths of the Prison, this is where the worst of the worst of Dark Mages were kept.
He also knew that he would be in a heap of trouble if he was caught, but it was something he needed to do.
He had just experienced what was probably going to be the worst days of his life (for now). He found out some more secrets about his family, of course they were just the most awful things (And once again, it proved Gray right when he said that Natsu had the most dysfunctional family out of all their guild mates). He had then been tortured and almost killed, then the guild was attacked and the woman he considered his mother for the longest time was dead…..for good this time.
They held the funeral for Mavis recently and Natsu didn't bother to stick around once it was done, not when he was feeling so angry.
He knew just who else would be feeling as angry as him, maybe even more.
Natsu had just stopped in front of the last cell on the block, unlike the other cells that had bars, this had a magical barrier surrounding it.
"Hello, little brother." A smooth and almost soothing voice said from the other side of the cell. It was Zeref, the former emperor of Alvarez and the Immortal Dark Wizard, though he was currently mortal now, as well as curse free.
One would actually not think that Zeref was in prison, as he was seated on a rather comfortable looking brown chair, with his feet propped up on a table.
Natsu also noticed a large, round mirror on the right end of the cell, as well as a bed on the other end. It was Mavis' idea to try and make him as comfortable as possible, so he got special treatment compared to the other prisoners.
In other words, Mavis was spoiling him.
Zeref was currently eating some, what looked like fresh grapes and sipping some exotic looking wine from a small wooden cup.
"You've finally come to see me." Zeref said after taking a sip from his wine, "What're here for? To talk? To gloat? To moc-"
"Enough Zeref." Natsu cut him off abruptly, he wasn't in the mood, "No games, not today." He said solemnly.
Zeref sighed and a look of remorse and sadness appeared on his face, before his illusion disappeared. What Natsu saw honestly surprised him, but in the end he guesses it shouldn't have. The cell was a mess, the chair and table were both toppled over, their legs were pulled off and used to beat them.
The grapes were on the floor, some looking squashed, while others were being carried away by the ants. The bottle of wine had been thrown against the wall, judging from the bright red stain on it and the fact that the remains of the bottle were so close to the wall.
The bed was turned over, the mattress sprawled out in the middle of the cell, the pillows and sheets thrown all over the place. The mirror was torn off its hinges and had been shattered by hand, judging from the blood stains Natsu could see on the broken shards of glass still in the frame.
Natsu then looked at the end of the cell, leaning against the cold stone wall was his older brother, or what used to be him.
Looking at Zeref now, you never would've guessed that he was considered the most dangerous man in the world.
Zeref, was currently wearing a plain black t-shirt, that had some tears by his shoulders. He was also wearing a plain black pants that had tears by his knees. He was barefoot, and Natsu could some of the remnants of the squashed grapes on the underneath of his feet. His hands were bloody and had bits and pieces of broken glass lodged in them, the wounds looked fresh and the blood was getting onto his pants.
His hair which was usually well-groomed and short had grown over the past year, falling a little bit past his shoulders. However it was wild, shaggy and unkempt, it looked like he hadn't bothered to take care of it for years. He also had a bit of a stubble on his chin forming, it was truly jarring at how…..human he looked. Though he had the most depressed looked on his face, at least the most depressed look Natsu had ever seen on him.
"Now you see me brother." He croaked, his voice was horse, like if he had been screaming for so long, his eyes were also red and Natsu could make out some tear stains on his cheeks.
The Dragneel brothers stared at each other for a while before Zeref spoke again, "Did she suffer?"
Natsu sighed, "It was quick." He said, "She died with a smile on her face."
Zeref gave a small smile, "That sounds like her."
Natsu quickly steeled himself, "I didn't come here for the both of us to wallow in our grief. I came here with a deal."
Zeref raised a tired eyebrow, "A deal? What could you possibly offer me?"
Natsu leaned against a stone pillar, crossing his arms, "I know you want revenge just as much as I do. You help me, I will give you that revenge, as well as an escape from this cell.
The former dark wizard let out a humourless laugh, "Help you? You must be truly desperate to come to me, little brother."
Natsu nodded his head, "I am desperate, I know that this is probably the stupidest thing I've ever done, but I need your help."
Zeref scoffed, "Even if I were to agree to that, what makes you think you can trust me?"
"I don't," Natsu said bluntly, coming off the pillar and tightening the bandages around his hands, "but Mavis did."
Natsu saw him tense at the mention of her and decided to push on, "This past year, when we fought, I held out some hope that maybe the brother from my memories was still there." Natsu pressed his hand on the barrier of Zeref's cell.
"But that hope is gone. If you even think about betraying me and hurting my friends, then I will kill you without a second thought." Natsu told him with a cold look in his eyes.
"I really hope it doesn't come to that, Mavis seemed to think that you could change, that we could become brothers again. I dunno if that's true, but I don't want to disappoint her…so whaddaya say?"
Zeref stared at him for about a minute, before a grin came over his face, "When do we start?"
Natsu met that with a grin of his own, "Now." He then used his magic and burned the barrier away.
Zeref looked impressed, "You've gotten stronger."
Natsu scoffed, "My flames are hot enough to burn the sea, this is nothing." He then tossed a bag to Zeref's feet.
"Get cleaned up and get dressed, we're leaving in a bit." Zeref looked inside the bag and saw his black robes and white toga inside.
"I thought I lost this." He muttered, luckily Natsu heard him.
"Mavis kept it, she used to snuggle up with them in the night, it was weird." Natsu shuddered.
Ever since Mavis came back to life, she decided to move into his house. At first he was happy, then that quickly turned into annoyance as she started nagging about his health and how he was living, as well as how filthy his house was and just overall being embarrassing.
(Gray and Gajeel had tons of black mail thanks to her!)
Natsu waited five minutes outside, before Zeref stepped out in his new clothes. His face was cleaned up, with his stubble gone and his eyes were looking better. His hair was now groomed and tied into a neat little bun. He was actually wearing shoes now and his hands were healed, though they had some scars from the glass.
"Wow," Natsu drawled out, "you actually don't look like a homeless person anymore."
Zeref rolled his eyes, "You're one to talk, mother would be weeping if she could see how you live."
Natsu grumbled, "My house is fine…."
Zeref stood next to him, "Well….shall we."
Natsu scratched the back of his neck, "Yeah….let's kick some ass."
The two brothers left together, not fully a family again, but united with a common goal.
Vengeance.
