Sorry it's kind of late, my health isn't the greatest at the moment. I will post the next chapter on Sunday evening assuming all things go right. Thanks for sticking around this long.
Chapter 50: Wind of Change
3rd October 1990
Gilbert loaded the last of his stuff into his car. It was official, East and West had been reunified so he was finally moving out of the apartment.
It wasn't much, mostly clothes, books, his instruments and a small amount of kitchenware. He didn't really want to keep anything out of the apartment as he wasn't attached to it and they didn't need the furniture.
He got into the car and made the short drive over to the house. It was exciting to finally be able to live with his brother again but at the same time a fear lingered in the back of his mind. Technically he wasn't a country anymore so he wasn't sure what would happen to him but if he was going to die he would rather do it having his brother by his side.
Gilbert pulled up to his house and parked his car on the driveway, his brother was waiting on him by the front door, probably because you can hear his car come down the street.
'West! I got it all!' Gilbert beamed as he jumped out the car.
'Here let me help you.' Ludwig said as he walked over, taking one of the suitcases out the back.
'You don't have a lot of stuff.' Ludwig said worried.
'Well, this is all the stuff I wanted to keep, I left the rest behind as I didn't need it too much.' Gilbert shrugged as he grabbed his flute case and guitar case.
'I guess that makes sense.' Ludwig nodded.
He didn't really believe that. Gilbert always wore the same black coat he had worn back when the last saw each other before the wall in 1961, now a tatty old mess, as well as the fact he knew he had owned the same car since 1965.
'Hey, why don't we go get you a new coat later on. That one looks like it has seen better days.' Ludwig suggested as they got to his brother's new room.
'Heehe… I um… I kinda like this one…' Prussia laughed anxiously.
He knew he should replace it and really he should want to get rid of it. Especially considering he hated Russia after their break up but it was the same reason he couldn't bring himself to sell his guitar, scrap his car, or throw out the stupid red scarf, he treasured the memory however bitter it was.
The coat had been a gift from Russia, he had bought it for him not long after they had gotten together properly. Prussia had taken a liking to it after seeing it in a tailors and Ivan had bought it for him without question even though it was a fancy and expensive one. It was the first time Ivan had ever bought him a gift that wasn't for his birthday.
'If you like it, would it not be better to replace it so you can make it last longer. Maybe we can get you one temporarily until it gets repaired.' Ludwig pushed, assuming his brother was just been prideful.
'I mean, I guess it wouldn't hurt to get it fixed. It is almost 50 years old now.' Gilbert sighed as he carefully took the coat off and lay it on his bed.
Ludwig continued to help Gilbert unpack his car. It was going to be great to have his brother back. They had spent the last few weeks decorating his room together in preparation. The walls painted in Prussian blue of course, with a full ensemble of wooden furniture and a desk for his brother to write on.
Although no doubt whenever Italy wasn't there, Gilbert would just choose to share a bed with him like he used to. Some people may think it was weird but for the German it was normal. Whenever he was scared as a kid the Prussian would just take him to his own bed and sleep by his side.
As they got older, Prussia seemed to just invite himself into his bed whenever he felt lonely and the German would allow him. Besides, he was hardly going to kick him out now if he didn't back then. Prussia was no longer a country, who knows how much longer he might live. Ludwig was going to do everything in his power to make sure Prussia was happy just in case. It was the least he could do after everything he had done for him.
'Hey uh brother, I got something to pick up, would you mind if I headed out for a bit?' Ludwig asked as he placed the last item in its room.
'You don't need to ask me, go ahead, give me time to unpack anyway. This place will be so much more awesome when I am done with it.' Gilbert smirked.
'Very well then. See you soon East.' Ludwig nodded as he shut the door and left.
Gilbert slowly unpacked, making sure everything was neatly in its new home. It was a nice process and reminded him that this was it now, no one could ever take him away from Germany.
Gilbert got to the last box, his bedside table box. It was just a small shoe box. Opening it he pulled out the famed painting of Old Fritz he had.
'There you are old man. I know this isn't probably how you thought I would end up, not even a country. However Germany, we did alright with him I think. His such a good kid. I am glad he is the one to take my place.' Prussia smiled sadly as he looked at the old mans face.
'I miss you.' He said softly before reaching into the box again.
Pulling out a little pillow for his bird he placed it down by Fritz and looked at the next picture. It was the photo of him and Ludwig at the beach, he placed it by Fritz and moved on to the last two items in the box. The wooden bird and the photo of him and Ivan with the Trabant.
Part of him wanted to place them there but the other part hated the fact he was still so attached to the fucking Russian that he couldn't even throw this shit out.
Gilbert just shoved the box into his bedside table drawer and slammed it shut. He would just ignore the problem for another day.
Taking the Walkman his brother had gotten him for his birthday he lay down on his bed, placed the headphones on his head and pressed play. He had gotten really into metal since the wall came down.
Gilbert lay there petting his bird with one hand as he lay in his bed, eyes closed enjoying the music for a little. Gilbert didn't get much time to relax as after only 30 minutes there was a knock on his door.
'Brother, I got you something, will you come downstairs.' Ludwig said through the door.
'Yeah, be right there!' Gilbert smiled, taking his headphones off.
Throwing his shoes back on he opened the door to see his brother standing there who then motioned him to follow him to the front door and handed him a small box.
'Open the door then.' Ludwig said as he stood behind him.
Gilbert did so he saw a blue BMW Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo sitting in front of the front door, Gilbert couldn't contain the grin on his face and opening the box revealed a key for it inside.
'IS THIS FOR REAL WEST!' Gilbert said in disbelief.
'Well I remember how fast you like to drive and your car is very old. I thought this would suit you much better. It's easily one of the best cars we currently make.' Ludwig explained.
'THIS IS SO AWESOME! YOU ARE SO AWESOME! DANKE!' Gilbert screamed in joy, pulling the German tightly into a hug.
'I am glad you like it.' Ludwig smiled slightly as he hugged him back.
'You want to come for a ride with your awesome brother!' Gilbert smirked as he pulled away.
'I will pass. I still remember how you drove your last BMW but please do go have fun without me.' Ludwig responded.
'Your loss.' Gilbert shrugged as he jumped inside and started it.
It's engine was loud but in a different way to the Trabant, it was loud with pure power and Gilbert loved it. Once it was all nice and warm he sped off towards the nearest Autobahn and cut it loose.
Sure his Trabant was Awesome but it had nothing on the raw power of this beast. Things were exactly how they should be, him and his brother side by side and a kick ass car that his brother was too afraid to be a passenger in. It was a shame he wasn't a country anymore but hey things were not all too bad.
Besides, Ludwig made it sound like he had a plan anyway to try and keep him alive and he trusted his brother. Things were going to be okay, maybe now he could finally get over that stupid fucking Russian and his big idiot face.
