The buzz of their first performance lingered well into the next day. Rachel walked through the halls of McKinley High with her head held higher than usual, a small smile gracing her lips. For once, it wasn't the usual rush of self-assuredness. It was something different—something warmer. She couldn't stop replaying the applause in her mind or the way Finn had looked at her afterward, his pride and excitement mirroring her own.
Rachel wasn't the only one feeling the glow. Finn Hudson was riding high, too. For the first time, he'd felt like he belonged to something bigger than football. Walking through the hallways, he caught nods and smiles from students who had previously ignored him. It felt... good. Different.
When Rachel passed by Finn near the lockers that morning, she gave him a quick nod, almost shy.
"Hey, superstar," Finn called, grinning.
Rachel paused, adjusting the strap of her messenger bag. "Hello, Finn."
"Guess we kind of crushed it last night, huh?"
Rachel smiled. "It seems the audience agreed."
Finn hesitated, shuffling his feet. "Uh, so, I was thinking... maybe we should celebrate or something? Like, grab a coffee after rehearsal?"
Rachel blinked, taken aback by the offer. Was this... a date? No, it couldn't be. Finn Hudson was far too... Finn Hudson to ask her out.
But the hopeful look in his eyes made her nod. "I suppose we've earned it. Coffee, then."
Later that day, rehearsal was intense. Mr. Schuester was determined to push the group to new heights, which meant endless runs of the same number until they nailed every step, every harmony. By the end, everyone was exhausted—except for Rachel, who thrived on perfection, and Finn, who had somehow managed to keep his energy up.
When they finally left the choir room, Rachel was still humming under her breath. Finn caught up to her, falling into step beside her.
"So, about that coffee?" he asked.
Rachel nodded. "There's a café a few blocks from here. It's quiet and perfect for planning future performances."
Finn laughed. "Or, you know, just relaxing."
Rachel gave him a sideways glance. "Relaxing doesn't accomplish anything."
"Sure it does," Finn said. "It lets you, I don't know, breathe. Take in the moment."
Rachel didn't respond, but the idea of slowing down, even for a moment, lingered in her mind.
The café was cozy, with mismatched furniture and the smell of roasted beans filling the air. Rachel ordered an herbal tea, while Finn went for a giant hot chocolate topped with whipped cream.
As they sat by the window, Finn leaned back in his chair, completely at ease. "So, do you always go full turbo mode like you did at rehearsal today?"
Rachel raised an eyebrow. "If by 'turbo mode,' you mean striving for excellence, then yes. Always."
Finn grinned. "Yeah, I figured. You're, like, the most intense person I've ever met. But in a good way."
Rachel felt a blush creep up her neck. "Well, someone has to take this seriously."
"I do take it seriously," Finn said, his tone sincere. "But, you know, it's okay to have fun, too."
Rachel hesitated, stirring her tea. "Sometimes I wonder if I'm too focused. My dads say I should learn to let others shine, but... what if I'm afraid that if I do, they'll forget me?"
Finn leaned forward, his expression thoughtful. "Rachel, nobody could forget you. You're, like, unforgettable. And not just because of your talent. You've got this... thing. This way of making people notice you, even if they don't want to."
Rachel blinked, startled by the unexpected compliment. "Thank you, Finn. That's... kind of you to say."
They sat in comfortable silence for a while, the hum of the café around them. Rachel found herself relaxing more than she had in weeks, and Finn seemed content just being there with her.
As they walked back to school, the sky was streaked with orange and pink from the setting sun. Rachel clutched her bag tightly, glancing at Finn out of the corner of her eye.
"You know," Finn said, breaking the silence, "I wasn't sure about this choir thing at first. But now... I think it's one of the best things I've ever done."
Rachel smiled. "That's because you're finally embracing your potential."
"Maybe," Finn said, nudging her shoulder lightly. "Or maybe it's because of you."
Rachel's heart skipped a beat, but she quickly recovered. "Well, I am an excellent influence."
Finn laughed, shaking his head. "You sure are, Rachel Berry."
As they reached the school parking lot, Rachel stopped, turning to face him. "Thank you for the coffee. It was... surprisingly pleasant."
"Anytime," Finn said, his grin widening. "See you tomorrow?"
Rachel nodded. "See you tomorrow."
As she watched him walk away, Rachel couldn't help but feel that something had shifted between them. For the first time in a long time, she wasn't thinking about solos or stardom. She was thinking about Finn Hudson—and that scared her more than she cared to admit.
