The aftermath of their explosive performance of Shout had been transformative for New Directions. The tension that had threatened to pull them apart was replaced with a renewed sense of camaraderie. And for Rachel and Finn, their bond was growing deeper with each passing day.
Their rehearsals together often extended into long conversations after the others had left, sharing stories and dreams, each discovering parts of the other they hadn't seen before.
One evening, Rachel and Finn were the last two in the choir room again, their duet for Sectionals nearly perfected. Finn strummed his guitar absently, watching Rachel as she jotted notes into her ever-present notebook.
"You know," he said, breaking the silence, "I used to think you were kind of... intense."
Rachel raised an eyebrow but smirked. "Used to?"
Finn chuckled. "Okay, maybe you still are. But it's not a bad thing. You care more than anyone else. And that's kind of... inspiring."
Rachel blinked, caught off guard by the sincerity in his voice. "Thank you, Finn. That means a lot. Especially coming from you."
Finn set his guitar aside and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "I mean it. You push everyone to be better. You've definitely pushed me."
Rachel felt a warmth rise in her chest. "Well, you've done the same for me. You remind me that it's okay to... let people in."
For a moment, they sat in silence, the unspoken connection between them growing stronger.
"Rachel," Finn started, his voice hesitant, "do you ever think about... I mean, do you ever feel like—"
The door to the choir room burst open, and Puck strode in, cutting Finn off mid-sentence.
"Berry," Puck said, tossing his bag onto a chair, "Schue wants us to work on that duet for Sectionals. You ready?"
Rachel looked up, startled. "Oh, right. Of course."
Finn frowned. "Wait, duet? You and Puck?"
Rachel nodded. "It's a small feature in the group number. Mr. Schuester thought it would add some edge."
Puck smirked. "Yeah, we're bringing the heat, Hudson. Don't get jealous."
Finn forced a laugh, but his jaw tightened. "Jealous? No way."
Rachel hesitated, sensing Finn's sudden shift in mood. "Finn, it's just one part of the performance. Our duet is still the centerpiece."
Finn shrugged, trying to appear indifferent. "Yeah, sure. Whatever."
But as Rachel and Puck began rehearsing, Finn's mood darkened.
The next few days were a whirlwind of rehearsals. Rachel threw herself into the duet with Puck, determined to make it perfect. But she couldn't ignore the tension radiating from Finn. He was quieter than usual, his easygoing demeanor replaced with clipped responses and lingering glances that spoke volumes.
During a break, Rachel cornered him in the hallway.
"Alright, Finn," she said, crossing her arms. "What's going on?"
Finn looked at her, feigning confusion. "What do you mean?"
"You've been acting strange ever since Puck and I started rehearsing. If something's bothering you, just say it."
Finn hesitated, then sighed. "Okay, fine. It's weird seeing you sing with him, alright? You guys have this... thing when you're on stage, and it's hard not to notice."
Rachel's brow furrowed. "Finn, it's just a performance. Puck and I have no... 'thing.'"
"Yeah?" Finn said, his tone sharper than he intended. "Well, it doesn't look like that from where I'm standing."
Rachel's eyes widened, hurt flashing across her face. "I can't believe you're accusing me of something like this. Do you really think I would..."
Finn ran a hand through his hair, frustration evident. "I don't know, Rachel. It's just—when you're with him, it feels like I don't even exist."
Rachel stepped closer, her voice softer now. "Finn, you do exist. More than anyone else. I need you to know that."
Finn's shoulders relaxed slightly, but he still avoided her gaze. "Then why does it feel like I'm competing with him?"
Rachel placed a hand on his arm, forcing him to look at her. "Because you're scared. But you don't have to be. What we have—on stage, off stage—it's real, Finn. It's not something I share with anyone else."
Finn studied her for a long moment, the vulnerability in her eyes finally breaking through his defenses.
"Sorry," he muttered. "I didn't mean to be such a jerk. It's just... I guess I'm not great at this whole feelings thing."
Rachel smiled faintly. "It's okay. Neither am I."
Finn chuckled, the tension between them easing. "Guess that makes us even, huh?"
Rachel nodded, her hand lingering on his arm. "Even."
When Sectionals finally arrived, the group was buzzing with nervous energy. But as they took the stage, Finn and Rachel shared a look, a silent promise that they were in this together.
Their performances were electric, each song filled with raw emotion and precision. When it was time for Rachel and Puck's duet, Finn stood off to the side, watching with a mix of awe and pride.
As Rachel and Puck delivered the final note, the audience erupted into applause. Rachel turned to Finn, her eyes searching for his reaction.
He gave her a small nod, a smile tugging at his lips.
Later, as they waited backstage for the results, Finn found Rachel sitting alone, her hands clasped tightly in her lap.
"Hey," he said, sitting beside her.
"Hey," she replied, her voice quiet.
"You were amazing out there," Finn said. "With Puck. And with me."
Rachel looked at him, her expression softening. "Thank you, Finn. But the truth is, I couldn't have done it without you."
Finn smiled, his hand brushing hers. "Same here, superstar."
As their hands intertwined, Rachel felt a warmth spread through her chest. For the first time in a long time, she felt like she wasn't just chasing a dream—she was living it. And Finn Hudson was right there beside her.
