Hi all,
Here's the next chapter. Professor Oak causes trouble for the church and Sapphira evolves.
Chapter 47
"You're the one who created the growth potion," Shichiro stated, his gaze fixed on Lucas with unwavering intensity. "You're Enigma."
Lucas snorted. "Not much of an enigma now, am I?"
Shichiro's astuteness was undeniable. He had linked Max to the growth potion. Outside of the potion, the giant strain was extremely rare, so Max's chances of acquiring it naturally were slim, especially given that he was in Saffron City when the potion first appeared in the auction. Lucas had expected this conversation to happen soon because he was planning to collaborate with Shichiro, but the man surprised him before he was ready.
Lucas realised that others might come to the same conclusion about him that Shichiro had. He needed to be more careful in the future. While he could explain Max's size by saying he had bought the growth potions at the auction, some people might not believe him. There were many people with a vested interest in the potion, and they probably devoted a significant number of resources to finding Enigma.
"I think you already know what I seek," Shichiro said.
"You wish to acquire the recipe so it can be mass-produced," Lucas replied. "Sabrina had hinted at that."
Shichiro glanced at his niece. "You already knew? Why keep it from me?"
"It wasn't my place to say anything," Sabrina said. "It's Lucas's creation. He can do anything he wants with it."
Salem materialised beside Sabrina and poked her in the shoulder. "Excuse me. I have to rescue Bree from her suitcase before she decides to escape on her own."
They watched her leave before they returned to the conversation.
"What exactly are you proposing?" Lucas asked.
"I will buy the recipe for five million pokedollars."
"Surely you jest. Once the potion spreads to other regions, the potential profits could reach tens of millions. Make a better offer."
"Seven million pokedollars."
"I want seven million pokedollars up front, plus thirty percent royalties on every sale," Lucas countered.
Shichiro gritted his teeth. "Five million pokedollars and ten per cent royalties. Remember, I will bear all costs—manufacturing, distribution, and advertising."
"Six million pokedollars and twenty percent royalties."
"Six million and fifteen percent royalties. That is my final offer."
Lucas thought about it for a moment before reaching out to shake Shichiro's hand. "You've got yourself a deal."
Shichiro grimaced. "We are practically family, yet you bleed me dry."
"Sabrina and I aren't married yet," Lucas retorted. He paused when something Shichiro had said caught his attention. "Wait a minute. Who am I making the deal with? Is it the government or yourself?"
"I don't have confidence in my position as Prime Minister," Shichiro admitted. "Eliminating my political rival won't guarantee that I'm safe, especially with the fight with Team Rocket on the horizon. Securing this deal for my family is the better option in case something happens that requires us to leave."
"Isn't that a conflict of interest?"
Shichiro shook his head. "My assistant will be in charge of the business. She has a lot of experience as a business manager. If people look too closely at the deal, she can claim that she contacted Enigma on her own and helped facilitate the deal. Besides, there is another reason I'm doing it this way."
"What is it?"
"If you sign a contract with the government, you must reveal your true identity. There will be far too much political pressure for me to keep it a secret. I know many people in the government who want to get their hands on you, not just for the growth potion, but also for the potential for further alchemical breakthroughs."
Lucas nodded. "I hadn't thought about that."
Sabrina returned with Bree in her arms and handed her over to Lucas, who seated her on his lap.
"Hi, Bree," Lucas said. "It looks like we are going to be living together."
Bree turned her head and smiled at him. He fought the urge to shudder at her doll's animated expression. He would never get used to it. "I have strict requirements for how my room should look. Please decorate my room as soon as possible."
"Bree!" Sabrina chastised her. "Don't be rude."
"It's fine," Lucas said. "Given everything she has done for me, it's the least I can do. We can go and get the supplies we need today. Do you need help moving Bree's furniture from your flat?"
"I already have it sorted. The furniture will arrive tomorrow."
"I will have my assistant contact you about the contract," Shichiro said. "She is likely to recommend that you obtain a patent for the growth potion before signing anything, just to protect your interests."
"Wouldn't that reveal my identity as well?"
"We can do it anonymously," Shichiro assured him. "You wouldn't be the first person who wants to protect their privacy when protecting their inventions."
Lucas stole a glance at Sabrina.
"You'll need to do so anyway if you plan on concocting more potions," Sabrina advised him. "My uncle won't deceive you. It wouldn't make much business sense. He sees you as having the potential to earn more pokedollars in the future."
"So, I'm the golden goose waiting to lay the golden egg?" Lucas quipped.
"What?" Sabrina looked at him, puzzled. "Why would you lay an egg? Is there something you're not telling me?"
Before Lucas could explain, Shichiro's phone rang, and he answered it. After listening for a moment, he let out an expletive. "What the hell does Professor Oak think he's up to?"
"What's happening?" Sabrina asked.
Shichiro didn't respond. He picked up the remote from the table and turned on the television.
"No way!" Lucas exclaimed in disbelief.
The news was broadcasting an astonishing scene outside the Church of Arceus's main chapel in Saffron City. The streets were swarming with protesters brandishing signs and chanting something. It took Lucas a moment to grasp the message being fervently conveyed: "Down with the church!" Their discontent was palpable through their fervent protests.
As the camera angles changed, the true magnitude of the situation became clear. Thousands of protesters crowded the streets, spilling out onto adjacent streets due to lack of space. Police had erected barricades to maintain public order, and reporters were filming everything, most likely revelling in the drama unfolding before them.
Professor Oak stood at the base of the chapel, holding a microphone, flanked by the Elite Four of Eastern Kanto—Lance, Bruno, Lorelei, and Agatha. Behind them, a contingent of church knights and their Pokemon guarded the doors. They couldn't intervene in the protests since the protesters occupied a public space.
Shichiro growled in frustration. "Why didn't that old man warn me about this? With the operation looming, this is the last thing I need."
"I beg to differ," Lucas replied, finding the situation amusing. "It's high time the church faced repercussions. They have harmed too many people, and some of those are probably protesting right now."
Sabrina's face mirrored his sentiment. "I wish Lance had given me a heads-up. I would have joined the protest."
Professor Oak raised his hands, silencing the crowd instantly, a testament to the respect he commanded in the region. He began speaking and captured the public's attention.
"I appreciate all of you for being here today. As some of you may know, my granddaughter was recently kidnapped at the behest of senior church members. While she was fortunately unharmed, the situation could have been much worse. She wasn't even the primary target but a pawn in their scheme. They believed they could act with impunity. Well, I refuse to let them off the hook!"
The crowd erupted in cheers, and Oak waited for the noise to subside before continuing.
"Many of you here have suffered due to the church's actions but lacked the means or influence to challenge them. I can imagine what you are thinking. Why am I only speaking out now, only after my own family fell victim to their crimes? Why didn't I do something sooner, when I had plenty of influence? I don't know what to say. There are few who would fight for injustice that doesn't directly impact them. They observe from a distance, silently condemning those responsible but refusing to take action. It's only when their family members are affected that they realise they can no longer be passive bystanders."
"The old man sure knows how to work a crowd," Lucas remarked, impressed by Professor Oak's speech.
"I demand that the church immediately stop obstructing the police investigation and hand over the individuals responsible for the attempted assassination of Lucas Walk and the kidnapping of my granddaughter. If this does not happen within the next twenty-four hours, the churches in Pallet Town, Viridian City, Celadon City, and Cerulean City will be reclaimed and their inhabitants evicted. The mayors have the authority to expel any individual or organisation that threatens the safety and welfare of its residents."
Professor Oak must have been working closely with the news station, as the view shifted to a four-way split screen displaying the four mayors standing outside the chapels, with Mayor Cassidy sporting a confident smirk.
"Do they have the authority to do that?" Lucas asked.
"Technically, yes," Shichiro said, rubbing his face tiredly. "I was the one who fought for the law, granting the mayors the power to act independently in situations where the central government faltered in protecting its citizens. Up until now, no one has used it."
Sabrina nodded, a glint of satisfaction in her eyes. "It looks like Professor Oak, the Elite Four and the mayors are ready to make a stand."
The perspective shifted back to Professor Oak, his voice firm and resolute. "We believe that no organisation, whether governmental, corporate, or religious, should be allowed to perpetrate crimes against its people without facing legal consequences. The church enjoys tax exemption privileges and accumulates substantial funds from hard-working citizens without sufficient oversight. If it were any other organisation, there would be far more scrutiny. I advocate for governmental intervention to supervise the church's operations, ensuring that incidents like this are never repeated. Are you in agreement with me?"
A resounding chorus of "Down with the church!" echoed from the impassioned crowd.
Shichiro switched off the television. "I've seen enough."
"What do you think the church's reaction will be?" Lucas asked.
Shichiro looked conflicted. "Professor Oak has backed them into a corner. They have no choice but to comply. I must return to Saffron City to handle the aftermath."
After Shichiro bid his niece farewell and left with his security detail, Lucas assisted Sabrina in settling Bree into her new room.
"Let's make sure your Pokemon are comfortable," Lucas suggested. "I've reinforced the Pokemon Den to accommodate even your Metagross. I'm looking forward to meeting him."
They went outside, and Sabrina paused when she noticed Scarlett lying on the back lawn. The Charizard had burnt off the snow around her and laid down some fern leaves to create a cosy nest for herself. Lucas let Daisy take care of her because he was too scared to approach her.
Inside the Pokemon Den, Daisy and Brock were preparing for the influx of Pokemon arriving soon. Due to limited space, they had to partition the main area to provide each Pokemon with its own designated space. It would only be an issue until winter ended, after which they would spend the majority of their time outside in the fenced-in enclosure. Lucas had also arranged sleeping quarters for Sabrina's Pokemon.
At the moment, only the Eevees and his Pokemon used it, but Lucas set up a sleeping area for Sabrina's Pokemon in case they would like to stay out here rather than inside the house.
"Hi, Sabrina," Daisy greeted warmly, enveloping her in a hug. "I'm thrilled to have another girl to share secrets and gossip with. These guys just don't have the same flair for it."
Sabrina appeared slightly bewildered.
As Brock attempted to join in the hug, Lucas playfully intervened, pushing him away. "Hands off, Casanova."
"Who's that?" Brock asked.
Lucas paused. "Er... it's a term for someone known for their romantic pursuits, often without much success."
Brock scowled. "That doesn't apply to me. I have plenty of opportunities with the ladies."
Daisy chuckled. "The attempt doesn't count, Brock. But hey, as they say, it only takes one success to make up for a hundred failures."
Brock grumbled at her remark.
Lucas mentioned Daisy's grandfather's protest against the church, which piqued Daisy's immediate interest in investigating further. While Daisy hurried off, Brock returned to his tasks, and Sabrina called upon her Pokemon. He met her Metagross for the first time while the rest of her team explored the surroundings.
Metagross was level sixty-three and absolutely massive. It stood about one and a half metres tall and must have been at least twice as wide. Lucas was concerned that the Pokemon was still too heavy and would fall through the floor despite his efforts to reinforce it.
"This is Axel," Sabrina said, introducing him. "He's the most laid-back among my Pokemon; however, when enraged, he is an absolute nightmare."
"Hello, Axel," Lucas said. "I will try not to make you angry. If I do, please don't sit on me."
"Meta!" Axel raised a leg in acknowledgement.
"You should thank Lucas," Sabrina said, patting his head. "He reinforced the floor so you have a comfortable place to rest."
"Gross!"
"Is he trolling me?" Lucas asked, amused.
Sabrina nodded.
Lucas summoned his Pokemon so they could interact with Sabrina's Pokemon. He noticed Dante make a beeline for Garnet, Sabrina's Gardevoir. He watched them for a moment, but they seemed to get along well enough. It was the first time he had seen Dante interact with another Pokemon so easily. Maybe it was because they were the same species that the Pokemon let his guard down.
He turned back to Sabrina. "There's been something I have wanted to ask. What are you going to do with your time? Are you going to take your old job back?"
Sabrina shook her head. "I'm not returning to the gym. There's a chance the church will try something else. To be honest, I'm rather relieved that I don't have to go back."
"So, what are you going to do?"
"For the time being?" Sabrina tilted her head. "I will concentrate on training my Pokemon to make them stronger. With everything that's going on at the moment, you can never be too safe."
He could see where she was coming from. If he weren't so focused on building the foundation for his business, then he would probably be more focused on strengthening his team. But would that attract too much attention if they improved so fast? Could someone without the advantages of the system replicate his results in the same time frame?
Lucas was facing a dilemma. Although her team was already strong, he knew he could help her Pokemon improve with his ability, but how was he supposed to do it without letting her know about it? Did it really matter if she did know? Would she even believe him? After thinking about it for a moment, he came up with a compromise that would keep his secret safe while also allowing him to help her.
"Come with me," Lucas said, grabbing her hand.
He led her inside and to his office. After booting up the computer, he accessed the forum where he had posted his article. By this point, it had already gotten a few views and comments. Most of the comments were negative, discrediting his claims about effort values as nonsense, but there were some positive comments and a few saying that they would try his method. As he thought, some of them were connecting his article to the alchemist because of the name, which he found amusing.
Sabrina immediately noticed Enigma's name at the top of the article. "Did you write this?"
Lucas nodded and gestured for her to read through it. After she had finished, she turned to him with a bewildered look.
"Lucas, how did you discover this information? You haven't had your Pokemon for that long."
He took a breath before speaking. "I discovered that I have a unique ability as an aura guardian. I know things instinctively without actually having the knowledge or experience to back it up. In fact, I could read your Pokemon's parameters to a fairly accurate degree. I tested the effort values myself, and they are legitimate. Although your Pokemon won't benefit from this information, there are other areas where I can help."
"I see," Sabrina said thoughtfully. "It would explain why your Pokemon are growing at such a fast rate if you have access to information others don't. I'm pleased you are sharing some of that information with the world, although I find your method somewhat strange. Why post it on this forum?"
Lucas smiled. "Trust me. Once people start confirming the information themselves, it's going to spread quickly beyond this website."
"I'm tempted to get another Pokemon to see how far I can go with the information on effort values."
"There's nothing stopping you," Lucas said. "Are there any particular Pokemon you are interested in? I could help you choose an egg with a lot of potential."
Sabrina's eyes widened. "Well, I've always been interested in getting a Slowbro."
"Then we should keep an eye out for one."
"Not at the moment," Sabrina said. "I will focus on current Pokemon before I consider taking on another one."
"All right," Lucas agreed. "Let's go and get supplies for Bree's bedroom before she sneaks down the hall with a knife in her hand."
"You've got a vivid imagination."
Lucas returned to Pallet Town and the farm, which housed the recently recovered Pokemon. He had made sure to have thirty pokeballs on hand in case he managed to persuade all of the Pokemon to come back with him. Because it wasn't a typical capture, he didn't believe he required anything more powerful than a standard pokeball.
Recent events had created a sense of impending turmoil in the Kanto region, similar to a lit powder keg waiting to be ignited. Professor Oak and the Elite Four pressured the church into giving up the perpetrators of the attack on him and Daisy. Lucas had never liked Professor Oak more than he did now, even though the old man wasn't doing it for his own benefit.
Despite the victory, protests continued as anti-church sentiment grew and more people joined the cause. It wasn't enough to destabilise the church, but it did show the possibility of it losing much of its influence in the near future. One of the church's bishops was dispatched to Saffron City to deal with the escalating tensions.
Zapdos had finally made a move. The power plant was in crisis because Zapdos was syphoning massive amounts of electricity from it with unknown motives. Whatever the Pokemon's goal was, it couldn't be anything good. Perhaps it didn't have anything planned and just enjoyed feeding on electricity, but that was wishful thinking more than anything else.
Because of Zapdos' disruptive actions, strict regulations were implemented to reduce power consumption by limiting the use of nonessential appliances. The energy crisis led to a surge in the sales of electric-type Pokemon, as people scrambled to generate power for their households. However, relying solely on them was at best a temporary fix, underscoring the urgent need to find a more long-lasting and sustainable solution to the Zapdos problem. The power plant had specialised equipment that extracted and stored electricity more efficiently, so it couldn't be replaced indefinitely.
Aside from training his Pokemon and getting ready for the new arrivals, he had spent a lot of time with Sabrina and her Pokemon. Honestly, her Pokemon were already strong and well-trained, but he was able to identify a few areas for improvement.
Shichiro's assistant had come to his home with the contract. He signed it after they had worked out the final details. He handed over the recipe, and in return, he received six million poke dollars. By this point, he didn't need to be a Pokemon Breeder to make money, but rather for the sake of enjoyment and ambition. He wanted to see how far he could go with the profession and whether he could become a grandmaster in the future.
She suggested that the growth potion be sold at a premium. It wasn't just about profit; there was a practical reason for it. The emergence of countless Pokemon with the giant strain posed a genuine threat to the world's resources. Lucas had witnessed Max's increased appetite following his evolution, which necessitated four times the usual food intake to sustain his body.
After deliberation, they settled on pricing the growth potion at fifty thousand pokedollars, ensuring Lucas received seven thousand five hundred pokedollars from each sale. He didn't have to worry about any of the expenses, such as hiring the alchemists or purchasing the ingredients. Once set up, the continuous revenue stream would guarantee his financial stability even if he were to spend all the pokedollars on hand.
In addition, he had been working on his aura sight skill, almost progressing to the extent that he could perceive in the dark as if it were daylight. He hadn't advanced in his profession yet, but he had a feeling that would change once he mastered the skill.
Melania met him at the gate and guided him to one of the buildings that held the Pokemon he had selected. As he moved through the stable, he meticulously inspected each Pokemon to confirm they were the ones he had chosen.
In total, twenty-two Pokemon were paired together, while the remaining eight Pokemon were left without partners.
The paired Pokemon were Pikachu, Nidoran, Paras, Mankey, Cubone, Koffing, Spheal, Cleffa, Wooper, Snubbull, and Houndour.
The single Pokemon were Squirtle, Raticate, Zubat, Bellsprout, Ledyba, Murkrow, Duskull, and Aron.
Most of the Pokemon were from the United Kanto Region, but there were some mixed in from other regions. Their levels ranged from ten to thirty-five. If he managed to get them all, he would have unlocked every affinity for his Pokemon Habitat, giving him more flexibility about how he wanted to train his Pokemon.
"Let's see if they are willing to join you," Melania said, her scepticism palpable.
Lucas understood Melania's doubt, given the Pokemon's harrowing past experiences with humans. However, he remained hopeful, counting on the bond he had established with them through his Pokemon Friendship skill during his previous visit. He stepped forward, introducing himself to the thirty Pokemon and convincing them to join him. An outcome that left Melania incredulous. He successfully captured and formed a pseudo-bond with each one, expanding his responsibility to oversee over forty Pokemon.
Lucas felt a mix of nervousness and excitement. Taking on such a large number of Pokemon was a risk, considering the expenses for their upkeep for food and shelter wouldn't come cheap. Yet, Lucas held onto the hope that by building strong Pokemon pedigrees, he could eventually turn their offspring into valuable assets worth hundreds of thousands of pokedollars.
"I envy your ability to connect with Pokemon," Melania sighed.
Lucas shrugged modestly. "Just fortunate, I suppose. How are the other Pokemon faring?"
Melania informed him that the majority of the Pokemon were either fully recovered or on their way to recovery, albeit at different rates. Some remained in comas and would require additional time, but they would all recover eventually.
"Thanks to you," Melania said. "They have a new lease on life."
"It's the least I could do. Regardless of the personal gain, saving them was the right thing to do. After all, humans are to blame for their suffering."
Melania nodded. "I will be heading home once the remaining Pokemon are back on their feet. Don't hesitate to reach out if you need anything."
After saying goodbye to Melania, Lucas returned to Viridian City. With the help of Brock, Daisy, and Sabrina, he ensured the Pokemon were settled comfortably. He put off breeding plans for a few days to give them time to adjust to their new surroundings. Even though eight of them lacked partners, he was considering experimenting with cross-species breeding. But that wasn't something he was planning to do anytime soon.
In the days that followed, Lucas dedicated himself to training his Pokemon, with a focus on Saphira, who needed to increase one more affinity above fifty percent. With the help of affinity potions to boost her training efficiency, Saphira finally surpassed the fifty percent mark in normal-type affinity.
Lucas offered Saphira a growth potion, and to his delight, she willingly accepted. In just a few days, she went from two metres to two and a half metres in length. Although it wasn't the most significant improvement, it would impact Dragonair, who was already huge in her own right.
Just like with Max, he set up in the back garden so he could record the event. Some of the siblings were sticking closely to Sabrina's side. She had been assigned the responsibility of overseeing the siblings by her uncle, and her initial awkwardness gave way to a growing ease as she interacted with them. He felt proud of her for how far she had come in such a short amount of time.
"Are you ready, Saphira?" Lucas asked.
Saphira trilled. He spent some of her experience, and she levelled up to level thirty.
Her scales shimmered and sparkled as the light of evolution enveloped her, making her shine even brighter. As the transformation began, her body elongated, and her fins grew larger and more vibrant. Her once small, innocent eyes gleamed with newfound strength and determination. With each passing moment, Dratini's form became more majestic and awe-inspiring, turning into a magnificent Dragonair.
"Wow," Lucas gasped.
"Look at the size of her!" Daisy exclaimed.
Saphira now stretched at least four and a half metres in length, her body broader and thicker than Lucas in some areas. She had more than doubled in size, surpassing all his expectations. The transformation was nothing short of astonishing.
"Not fair!" Max grumbled as he saw that his position as the biggest Pokemon had been surpassed.
As Saphira began to move, adjusting to her new form, Lucas used his Insight skill to examine her new parameters, eager to see the full extent of her power in this evolved state.

"Unbelievable!" Lucas' eyes immediately fixated on a new trait Saphira had acquired: Weather Control.
How had he overlooked that Dragonair could soar through the skies by manipulating the weather? It made sense, considering Dragonite's undersized wings couldn't support its massive frame in flight.
As this realisation dawned on him, Saphira gracefully ascended into the air before him, prompting gasps of awe from the onlookers. She glided over to Lucas, wrapping her tail around him before gently placing him on her back. Initially startled, Lucas's screams soon transformed into joyous laughter as he overcame his fear of heights. Embracing Saphira's neck, he surrendered to the exhilarating sensation of flight for the first time.
So, what do you think? In the next chapter, Giovanni reveals his plan, and it involves a certain legendary Pokemon.
