Chapter 20: New year, same problems

Gotham City January 1st 16:16 EST

(Four years later)

Superboy was running through a sewer, he skid to a stop next to a pile of what looked to be mud. While he was investigating it a tentacle made of the same stuff came out of the water and wrapped itself around him. It pulled him towards the water where Clayface emerged.

"You always fall for that gag." Clayface said as he began to slowly absorb Superboy into him. "Struggle all you want kid, even a Kryptonian has to breath." He said with a laugh. "Let him go." Miss M said as she came out of camouflage. Her eyes glowed green as she spread her arms out making Clayface's body open until Superboy could climb out.

"Delta squad, we've found the target, converge on our signal." Miss M ordered over the mental link. Clayface laughed. " We can do this all-day kiddo, but there's nothing you can do to hurt me."

In the shadows, a figure threw three birdarang's that sent electricity through Clayface's body but turn to the figure unaffected.

"That doesn't work anymore." Clayface said, annoyed that they even tried that. "Then try this." Superboy said as he pulled out a small gray pill.

Clayface ran at him, roaring. Superboy threw the pill and Clayface swallowed it, suddenly an explosion went off inside of Clayface then this cement like substance started oozing out of him and in an instant Clayface was a statue.

"Good job on the distraction Robin." Superboy said as a new Robin stepped out of the shadows. "Thanks, I'm just glad it worked." An alligator, wearing a red and white collar came out of a pipe and morphed into a boy with green skin and hair and wearing a red and white suit, he was also in a half monkey form.

"Dang it, its over already, I didn't even get a souvenir for the trophy room. Big bro's gonna be so mad".

While the boy complained, another person in blue armor that resembles an insect flew in. He inhaled and grimaced. "Dude, I think that smell counts." He said getting a confused look from the boy.

Miss M landed next to Superboy, who climbed out of the water, and an African American teen girl who went from being the size of a bug to normal human size when she landed.

Miss M removed her hood, revealing that her hair was now cut short and had black highlights.

She pressed her earpiece and spoke. "Delta squad to cave, Target has been neutralized." "Good work Delta, Come on home. Nightwing out." Nightwing said in response.

Mount Justice January 1st 18:18 EST

Lagoon boy released a grunt as he fell on his back. "Neptune's beard!" he cursed as he punched the ground. "You did it to me again." He said as the opponent walked up to him and offered a hand up which he accepted.

"I don't care how many years you trained as robin, then as Nightwing, one of these days your mine, chum." He proclaimed with a smirk. "I don't doubt it Lagoon boy." Nightwing said with a similar smile. "I do." A voice said, drawing the pair's attention.

"Even back when this team was first formed, you were the best fighter, and still are. You could even beat the ones with super strength." Legend said from the wall he was leaning against.

He hasn't changed much in the past four years except for the extra muscle he had gained and now being six feet tall. He added a pair of wrist guards, swopped out his combat boots for a pair of martial arts shoes, his shirt is now sleeveless. Legend and Nightwing chuckled in nostalgia.

"Slow down beautiful, let me tell you what's up tonight." Bumblebee's boyfriend, Mal Duncan, said trying to get her attention. "Sorry mal, I can't. I'm already late for a lab session with Dr. Palmer. Rain check baby, okay." Bumblebee said as she walked off. "Rain check, sure." Mal said to himself in disappointment as he watched bumblebee walk away.

He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see it was Legend who gave him a supportive smile. "Think of it this way; you hate to see her go, but you love to watch her leave." Legend said getting a snort and laugh out of Mal. "My man, I like the way you think."

"Welcome home angelfish." Lagoon boy said to M'gann as he wraps his arms around her waist. "Thank you La'gaan." M'gann says then kisses him. Superboy walks by with a frown, Legend glances over and sees this, his smile drops knowing what's going on and goes back to talking with Mal.

"Emergency Alert!" A HoloScreen popped up showing Captain Atom, everyone who was still in the room immediately turned their attention towards the screen. "UN Headquarters is under attack." Atom said, another holoscreen popped up showing the current live news feed.

"Beta's only two blocks away." Mal told Nightwing as he looked at a map of the city. "Captain Atom, the teams Beta squad is on its way, ETA is three minutes." Nightwing said getting a nod from Atom. "Very well, I hope they'll be enough, Atom out." He said right before he ended the call.

"Well, since B-teams got this I guess I'll be heading out, see ya guys later." Legend said as he walked up to the zeta tube, it then lit up and he left.

"I'm still surprised that he found a place to live outside of the cave." Nightwing said. "I'm happy for him, he gets to experience life outside of being a hero this way." M'gann said walking up next to him. Nightwing smirked. "I never said I wasn't happy for him." They both shared a small laugh.

Dakota City January 1st 20:09 EST

Joshua opened the door and stretched with a yawn. "Good to be home."

He had a large two bedroom apartment, Icon helped buy it for him.

Fang was sprawled on the rug, asleep. Joshua went up to him and pet him. He froze when he saw a tranquilizer dart in his neck.

He stood up straight and focused entirely on his super hearing. He heard soft breathing from his bedroom. He went to his door, opened it and saw that the light was off.

"I know your in hear, show yourself." He said unafraid. He switched the light on and saw Cheshire sitting on his bed.

"Hey there handsome, been awhile hasn't it?" Cheshire said, sitting up and taking off her mask showing off her sultry smile. "Why are you here Jade?" "Oh, and here I thought you missed me." She stood up and walked over to the off duty hero while swaying her hips.

Joshua looked down at the shorter woman and saw that she had some sort of pack on her back.

"What's that you've got there?" He asked, Jade's smile fell slightly. She stepped back and pulled the pack off her back revealing that she was carrying a baby girl. She had almond skin and black hair.

Joshua's eyes widened. "This is Lian Jordan, our daughter." "What… when?" "Shhhh, she's sleeping. Do you wanna hold her?" She held Lian out and Joshua hesitantly took his child in his arms, Jade giggled as her lover awkwardly held their daughter. After he finally figured out how to carry her Jade turned and gathered her things.

"Wait, what are you doing?" "I have to leave, I've got work to do." "What about Lian?" "She has you, she deserves a better life then what I could give her." "You're her mom, she needs you!" "Like you need yours."

Joshua choked on his words at that. "I know the kind of person you are, I know you'll take care of her, with or without me."

Joshua was stuttering looking between Lian and Jade completely confused.

"Take care, handsome." She blew him a kiss as she flipped out the window. Joshua stood there silent for a moment. Lian wokez up and Started gurgling. "What the heck just happened?!" Joshua thought.

Hall of justice January 3rd 17:06 EST

Zatanna, Rocket, and Legend, in costume, were walking up to the Hall while Cat Grant was reporting Infront of the door.

"This is Cat Grant at the Hall of justice, I'm gonna try and get a statement from the league two newest members, Zatanna and Rocket. Along with the hero, Legend."She said, turning to the three.

"No comment." Zatanna said as they walked past her. "Miss Grant, I've told you, the league will issue a statement soon." The league's public liaison, Catherine Corbet, said then closed the door. Cat just turned to the camera and shrugged her shoulders.

On the watchtower, the three stepped out of the zeta tube and walked up to the others who were discussing the event where a politician was exposed as a fake controlled by an alien.

"That was a Krolotean, that's bad news. Kroloteans travel in packs so if one's here-" Green Lantern began to explain. "There could be more on earth." Batman finished.

After hearing the story of a Scientist named Adam strange the hero's planned to travel to the planet Rann, the only problem was that Earthlings were banned from Rann's corner of the galaxy and the six Leaguers that went missing for a while during Savages takeover of the league were wanted criminals there.

"Batman, it's the missing sixteen hours!" Nightwing said to his mentor in both surprise and realization. "Your right, when Vandal Savage took control of the league these six members went missing for sixteen hours." Batman explained.

"I never would have thought that Vandal would have sent us into space. I'll tell Hal and Guy, they're on Owa With the rest of the core right now." Green Lantern, John Stewart, said while adopting a thinking pose.

"Meanwhile I'll see which of the other leaguers can go to Rann." Captain Atom said with authority.

"Actually, there's a planetary watch on Rann for every leaguer." The scientist explained. "Not all of us are leaguers. I can send a squad from the team to take care of Rann and to find out more about those sixteen hours without causing an intergalactic incident." Nightwing suggests. "Good, do it." Was Captain Atoms response.

Nightwing nodded and he and the other members of the team walked off. Superboy felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to see Legend. "I wouldn't wear that shirt where you're going. If I were you." Legend said with a small grin. Superboy looked down at his shirt and raised an eyebrow.

Zatanna and rocket walk up Infront of the four members of the team. "You know that thing about you not being leaguers… You guys still have an open invitation so-" Zatanna says over the mental link. "We know Z." "But we're all pretty happy-" "Right where we are." Nightwing, Miss M, and Superboy said in response. "Just keep our seat warm for us till then, okay." Legend said with a grin which both girls returned.

"Hey bud, can we talk?" Nightwing whispered to Legend. "Sure." Nightwing gestures over to the corner of the room and the two stepped away to talk.

"So, how are things going with your new house guest?" "she's… great. I left her with her aunt for the night, but I'm picking her up later."

Legend scratched the back of his head and looked like all of his exhaustion finally caught up with him. Nightwing held back a chuckle.

"You've got this buddy, you're gonna be a great dad." "Thanks man."
