Start of an Old Friendship

You have not had a visitor wander through your dim, musky, forgotten aisle in…how long? The last time anyone lingered, took a suitable look around has been even longer. A hand gently touches you, shocking you. What else can you do, after the figure disappears, but free yourself from the odds and ends you're half buried under and follow?

The headmistress's eyes grow large like an owl when she spots you in the line, hovering by your visitor's shoulder. The woman does not look away, and sends the next five young ladies off with whatever carpet bag her hand randomly settles upon before the two of you reach her.

"So…you have chosen your own carpet bag, have you?!"

"My own?" the girl replies, taken aback.

The older woman glares down her nose at you. "That," her voice brims with disapproval.

The girl turns around and blinks at you in surprise. "Oh." For a moment you stare at her and she at you. Then once more she faces the headmistress. "I have never seen it before, ma'am."

"Ah!"

Leaning forward the woman peers intently at you for a long time, taking in your old, shabby appearance. Trembling nervously, you duck behind the girl's shoulder ("Best foot forward," she encourages). Something shifts in the headmistress's eyes.

"It would appear, Miss Poppins, you have already found your carpet bag," she declared thoughtfully.

You sigh with relief, then shiver in delight when you hear, "I do believe it found me, ma'am." Content, you float down so your Miss Poppins may hold you properly by the handle. Not even the stares, whispers, and giggles which accompany you while leaving the great hall can dampen your mood.

After all, none of the other prettier carpet bags are made from a magic carpet!
