Serve the People - The Real Surprise Ending
Synopsis
Shin Mu-Gwang is a soldier tasked with the kitchen duty for the division commander's household that is based in the division headquarters' ground. His major goal in life is to win the recognition of his superiors so that he can be promoted to the rank of officer. He is totally dedicated to serving the commander's household when, during the commander's special assignment away from home for one month, the commander's young wife begins to make demands on Mu-Gwang which can only be interpreted as sexual advances.
Mu-Gwang is caught between his devotion to his duty and the fear of violating what is clearly forbidden to him - the commander's wife. Soo-Ryeon, the commander's young wife, demands to be called not as "Ma'am," but as "sister" by Mu-Gwang, citing the small age difference between them. She further demands that Mu-Gwang's duty to serve the people includes the duty to meet her erotic needs.
Already married with a child, Mu-Gwang can't decide if he must obey her demand, and if he does, how it will change their relationship and what will happen to him if her husband, the intimidating division commander many years older than his wife, ever finds out. The film jumps forward 15 years and tells what has happened to all the major characters of the story - with a surprise ending….. But did it?
Before the surprise ending many questions need to be answered within the 15 year time jump to allow this story to end properly without any ambiguity…. Which the director and screenwriter intentionally left out.
The story begins with Commander Pi questioning Shin Mu Gwang
Commander Pi: Do you know the meaning of the words on this plaque?
Mu Gang: "Serve the People" means we must work for the greater good of the Republic over personal happiness… it is the People's Army first duty that our Premier proclaimed in 1948. The Sickle and the Hammer represents the proletariat revolution…The Red Star symbolizes the bright future once socialism is realized, Sir!
Commander Pi realizes that Mu Gwang is well indoctrinated into the party rules and structure and wouldn't dare disobey the rules of his house especially with his young beautiful wife around.
The Commander told Mu Gwang never to go upstairs while Soo Ryeon gave her own edict that whenever the Plaque was not in the fixed position and placed somewhere else that meant that she needed his help upstairs.
However his wife has other plans … the Commander has never been able to consummate their marriage since he still has a bullet lodged in his groin area... preventing him from performing his manly duties. Using the phrase Serve the People ...Soo Ryeon breaks his resolve by making him stand completely naked in front of her. Mu Gwang: What does that mean?
Lieutenant: Our division will disappear….. like smoke from the Central Military Commission.
Mu Gwang: What will happen to me?
Lieutenant: The officer position you've so wanted, has gone down the drain.
The Captain and The Lieutenant have their own conversation about what is happening.
Captain: How can he dissolve the division and the soldiers to save himself….. Can you call that a commander?…. He's no commander!… He did this to be promoted… Why should we pay for this?
Mu Gwang feeling disillusioned that everything he worked for has now gone to waste but then he receives the unexpected surprise.
Warden: The Party has approved of your new job and will move your family to the city.

Realizing that this is his son he walks away so he isn't noticed .
He returns a second time ….. this time dressed in his military uniform and asks to see the lady of the mansion.
Guard : Do you have an appointment.
Mu Gwang: If I didn't have an appointment how could've gotten to the door….. Please tell madam that Shin Mu Gwang is standing outside the door.
Guard returns with a message from her: She says she's getting her hair done and can't come out…. She said you can't come in inside either… she asked you to read this letter to you… She said if you need anything, she'll take care of it.

As he continue walking to the exit gates his image fades the closer he to gets the exit gates ...the movie ends. However this wasn't the kind of ending this story deserved. For Mu Gwang to make two trips without getting to see the person he has been longing to see... one needs to understand the psychological meaning of the word longing.

The script writers and the producers of this movie did it an injustice by not showing a visual of Soo Ryeon after the 15 years. By only showing Mu Gwang and how his life changed... What about her?… the woman that made everything happen?
This where two stories need to unfold before the real ending can be seen without any ambiguities or misconceptions as to what message was to be conveyed.
While Mu Gwang leaves the estate in a state of confusion….. the guard enters the residence and hands the red covered package to her. Upon seeing it she rushes to the window to get a glimpse of the man that changed her life also. As she did 15 years ago she was forced to make him leave in order to protect him once again.

The author of the book Serve the People wanted to show the hypocrisy of why Communism can never work.
The 15 year time jump - the year 1991 was significant in why the last scene was shown as it was.
In the early days of December 1991, the vast communist empire of the Soviet Union formally and unceremoniously collapsed. It was, in a sense, the end of the global movement that played an extraordinary role in defining the human dreams and the devastating geopolitical conflicts of the 20th century.
Soo Ryeon knowing that the current form of governing by the ruling class is drowning in it's own quagmire sees her chance to escape from it's clutches and live the life that she wants to live.

Mu Gwang: Have you decided about us and that's why we're meeting like this?
Soo Ryeon: Come sit next to me….. I have something I need to tell you…. As he sits next to her she takes his hand and places it on her belly like 15 years ago.
Mu Gwang: What is this are you pregnant…. I thought the General couldn't get you pregnant?
Soo Ryeon: He can't…. but you can… You did…. This time do you want to raise this baby together….. I can raise it by myself if you don't want to leave your wife?
Mu Gwang: I was going to tell you... She already left me….She;s had her own lover for sometime now... She asked for a divorce …. So I gave it to her….. Have you told the General?…. He won't be happy that I keep getting you pregnant?
Soo Ryeon: What about you?... are you happy about it?…. Fate seem to keep playing tricks on us.
Mu Gwang: Of course I'm happy…. Are you going to leave him and marry me finally?.

My Dearest Soo Ryeon
You served me well over the years, but I failed to serve you, I should have been honest and forthright to you when I approached you for marriage. ….. I sincerely apologize for trapping you in a loveless marriage. Though I was a warrior not afraid of any war… I was afraid of loosing you. Warriors are not good litigators…. You were the very best at navigating the minefields that bureaucrats set traps for. Your were absolutely right in saying that without you I could've never achieved my full potential as a warrior… You served me and You Served the People well. It's time that you can serve yourself and the one you love with that same tenacity and boldness that is you.

General Pi Cheol Jin
The General's body was discovered at the Military Base that was dissolved because of the contrived incident with the US Military.
After the funeral of the General Pi….Soo Ryeon and her son moved out of the mansion and moved in with Mu Gwang…. They got their red book with their marriage certificate .
They made a change in the family registry by having their son's sur name changed from Pi to Shin as it was always intend.
The Real Surprise Ending Happened once their baby girl was born... Soo Ryeon began to make preparations to bring her new family to country were they could absolutely be free... they could live the life they wanted.
