The moon hung low in the sky, casting long shadows over the Yagami household. Light sat at his desk, his fingers steepled as he leaned back in his chair, the Death Note open before him. The room was quiet save for the faint hum of his computer and the occasional scratching sound of Ryuk munching on an apple.
Light's mind raced. Kuri had left him, and not just physically—she had mentally begun to drift. Worse, she was with L, the one man who could tear his perfect world apart.
"This isn't over," he muttered, his voice low and dangerous. "If Kuri won't come back willingly, I'll make her come back. And if she continues to resist…" His hand hovered over the Death Note.
Ryuk cackled. "You're really losing it, aren't you, Light? Planning to write her name already?"
Light glared at the Shinigami. "I don't lose, Ryuk. I always have a plan." He opened his laptop and pulled up the police task force's files, which he'd hacked long ago. The FBI agents L had brought in were already under surveillance. They were disposable, but they could serve another purpose.
"I'll use the FBI agents to tighten the noose around Kuri. Frame her, push her into a corner, and then be the one to save her," Light mused, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the desk. "She'll realize she belongs to me. She's always belonged to me."
Ryuk snickered. "Manipulating her and trying to kill off your biggest threat? Classic Light."
Light's eyes glinted with malice. "First, I need her to make the deal. If Kuri gets the Shinigami eyes, I can use her to eliminate L. She'll do it without even realizing the cost."

Back at the investigation headquarters, Kuri sat beside L, who was hunched over his monitors, surrounded by stacks of papers and sugary snacks. Despite the chaos of his surroundings, there was an odd serenity in the room.
"I want to show you something," L said, glancing at her. His voice was soft, a stark contrast to his sharp gaze. He reached for a stack of documents and placed them in front of her.
"These are the profiles of the FBI agents monitoring the police," he explained. "It's dangerous for them, but necessary. Kira has someone feeding him information from within the task force."
Kuri's eyes widened. "You think there's a leak in the police?"
"I'm certain of it," L replied. "Kira is meticulous, but his actions betray his access to classified information. It's someone close to the investigation."
Her chest tightened. Light's words from before echoed in her mind: "You trust me, don't you?" She looked down at the papers, guilt and confusion swirling inside her. "Why are you showing me this?"
"Because I trust you," L said simply. His eyes softened as he added, "I know you've been manipulated, Kuri. I see how you doubt yourself. I want you to know you don't have to face this alone."
Kuri blinked back tears. For months, she had been caught in Light's web of control, made to feel like her worth was tied to his approval. Now, sitting beside L, she felt something she hadn't in a long time: safe.
"Thank you," she whispered, her voice trembling.
L's lips curved into the faintest of smiles. "I knew I could count on you."

Meanwhile, Light was putting the finishing touches on his plan. He watched Kuri on his hidden cameras, her every move monitored. His anger flared as he saw her sitting close to L, her body language relaxed, her expression soft.
"She's slipping further away," he muttered. "I need to act now."
He turned to Ryuk. "Ryuk, explain it to her. Make her understand what she's giving up if she doesn't make the deal for the Shinigami eyes."
Ryuk tilted his head, amused. "You really think she'll fall for that? She's not as gullible as you think."
Light's lips curled into a cold smile. "She will. Kuri always sees herself as a tool for justice. She'll make the deal if I convince her it's for the greater good."
He opened the Death Note and began writing. The names of several FBI agents filled the page. "I'll eliminate the agents and make it look like Kuri was behind it. L will have no choice but to suspect her. And when she's cornered, I'll be the one to save her."
Ryuk chuckled. "And what if L figures it out?"
"He won't," Light said confidently. "Not before it's too late."

Later that night, Kuri sat in her temporary room at headquarters, staring out the window. Ryuk appeared, his skeletal grin as wide as ever.
"You've been quiet," he said. "Thinking about the offer?"
Kuri frowned. "The Shinigami eyes… I don't know."
Ryuk floated closer. "Half your lifespan for the ability to see anyone's name and lifespan. Sounds like a good deal to me. Especially if you want to protect yourself from L."
"I don't want to kill L," she said firmly.
"Oh, I get it," Ryuk said, his grin widening. "You like him."
Kuri's cheeks flushed, but she didn't respond.
"Light's not gonna like that," Ryuk teased. "He's got big plans for you, you know."
Her chest tightened. Light's words, his touch, his overbearing presence—it all felt suffocating now. "I'll never give him what he wants," she said, her voice firm.
Ryuk laughed. "Well, well. Looks like someone's finally waking up."

Light sat at his desk, watching the camera feed. He held Kuri's Driver's License in his hand. He wrote Kuri's name in the Death Note: Kurisuta Hikawa Watanabe..
Seconds passed. Then a minute.
Nothing happened.
"What?" Light muttered, his hand tightening around the pen. He wrote it again, pressing harder this time: Kurisuta Hikawa Watanabe.
Still, nothing.
"No," he hissed, his eyes wild. He slammed the notebook shut and glared at the screen. Kuri was alive, sitting peacefully in her room. "Why isn't it working?!"
Ryuk floated beside him, cackling. "You really don't know, do you?"
"Know what?" Light snapped, his voice shaking with rage.
"That license is a fake," Ryuk said, his grin splitting his face. "Looks like you've got a problem, kid."
Light's hands balled into fists, his breath ragged. He threw the ID across the room. "She lied to me," he growled, his voice filled with venom. "She's with L, and she lied to me. AGAIN!"
Ryuk laughed harder, spinning in the air. "Guess your perfect plan isn't so perfect after all."
Light stood abruptly, knocking over his chair. "I'll find her real name," he vowed. "And when I do, I'll kill them both."

In the headquarters, Kuri sat beside L as he worked. The faint glow of the monitors illuminated his face, his dark eyes calm yet watchful.
"Thank you," she said softly, breaking the silence.
L glanced at her, his expression softening. "For what?"
"For believing in me," she said. "For showing me I don't have to be afraid."
L hesitated, then reached out, his hand brushing hers. "You're stronger than you realize, Kuri. And I'll do everything I can to protect you."
For the first time, Kuri felt free from Light's shadow. And she wasn't going back.
