Chapter 3: A Spark Ignites
Alex's training had begun in earnest. Jason had pushed him hard during the team's sparring session at the Command Center, and now Alex was slumped on the floor, drenched in sweat.
"You're getting better," Jason said, tossing him a towel. "But you've still got a ways to go before you can keep up in a real fight."
"Thanks for the vote of confidence," Alex muttered, wiping his face.
Kimberly, sitting cross-legged nearby, chuckled softly. "Don't take him too seriously. He said the same thing to me when I started."
Alex looked over at her, surprised. "Really? You? But you're, like, a ninja in spandex."
Kimberly laughed, a light, melodic sound that made Alex smile. "Trust me, I wasn't always. It takes time. You'll get there."
As the team began to pack up, Zordon's voice filled the chamber. "Rangers, Rita has unleashed a monster in the city. Prepare to engage."
The group exchanged quick, determined glances before Jason shouted, "It's morphin' time!"
The Rangers teleported to the scene, where a massive, mechanical scorpion was terrorizing downtown Angel Grove. The battle was intense, with the monster's tail lashing out at every turn.
During the fight, Alex found himself separated from the group. The scorpion's tail slammed into the ground near him, and he barely dodged in time. But before the tail could strike again, Kimberly swooped in on her Pterodactyl Dino Zord, blasting the creature back.
"Nice save!" Alex called up to her, relief and admiration in his voice.
Kimberly grinned through her helmet. "Stick with me, rookie. I won't let anything happen to you."
As the battle raged on, Alex found himself stepping up more, working seamlessly with Kimberly to flank the monster. Their teamwork was natural, almost effortless, and the others noticed.
After they finally defeated the creature and returned to the Command Center, Alex collapsed onto one of the benches, exhausted.
"You held your own out there," Kimberly said, sitting beside him.
Alex shrugged. "I'm just trying not to slow you guys down."
"You're not," she said firmly. "Actually...you're kind of impressive."
Alex blinked, caught off guard. "Me? Impressive? Are we talking about the same person?"
Kimberly rolled her eyes, laughing softly. "Don't sell yourself short. You've got potential. And, you know, you're not so bad to hang out with either."
Alex felt his face heat up under her gaze. "Thanks, Kim. That means a lot."
As the others debriefed with Zordon, Kimberly lingered near Alex, glancing at him every so often. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but there was something about him—something that made her smile a little more, something that made her heart beat just a little faster.
And as Alex caught her looking and gave her a shy smile, Kimberly realized she might be feeling something she hadn't expected.
The spark had been lit.
