Lois hurries back to her hotel room and gives Clark a call. Before Lois can hang up her phone, Clark arrives to her room.
"You're here; Clark, I saw, I saw, well I'm not even sure." Lois says.
She was frantic. Clark rarely ever saw her like this. He stepped forward and gave her a hug.
"Okay, Lois, it's okay, just calm down and tell me exactly what happened." Clark says.
Lois begins to calm down. She felt reassured in his arms.
"It was- It was General Eiling. He took a solider into a lab for… experimentation. He pumped the solider full of… something, until the soldiers body exploded." Lois says.
"General Eiling, he's the one that-" Clark stops himself.
"That took my father's position after Lex murdered him, yes." Lois says.
"I'll meet with him, see what's going on." Clark says.
"How, you don't work for the Planet anymore, you don't have a press pass." Lois says.
"No, but Superman and the Justice League are supposed to be working closer with the government. I'm sure I could set up a meeting." Clark says.
"Okay, just be careful. I don't think Eiling trusts the Justice League too much." Lois says.
"Which is why it's my job to change that." Clark says.
"Never lose that optimism, boy scout." Lois says.
The next day Superman arranges for a meeting with General Eiling. The general starts off the meeting already a little suspicious. Yesterday they had their failed experiment, and today a member of the Justice League requests to meet with him.
Superman knocks as he enters the general's office.
"General, may I come in?" Superman asks politely.
"Very well." General Eiling says curtly.
Superman takes a seat and General Eiling looks at him, stone-faced.
"What can I do for you Superman?" General Eiling asks.
"Well General, I wanted to address some things I've been hearing." Superman says.
"Rumors from nosey reporters, or something you over heard with your… enhanced abilities?" Eiling asks.
"Let's just say I've heard about questionable experiments happening." Superman says.
"There's nothing questionable going on here. Anything being done has the full backing of the United States government." General Eiling says, as he becomes defensive.
Superman turns to leave, then he stops.
"Tread carefully General, I've seen too many experiments end in disaster." Superman says, as he exits General Eiling's office.
When General Eiling is certain that Superman is far enough away, he picks up his phone and makes a call.
"It's me, we have to move up the time table on project Major Force." General Eiling says.
Late that evening, General Eiling goes to the lab where the Nathanial Adams experiment failed.
"General, I didn't expect to see you back here tonight." The security guard at the front says, as he scans his card to allow him in.
"Defending this country doesn't recognize a time clock." General Eiling says.
Eiling makes his way to the lab where the experiment was conducted. He looks around to make sure no one else is there. Then Eiling morphs into a Martian form. This wasn't General Eiling at all, but rather J'onn J'onzz, The Martian Manhunter. He had disguised himself and with Cyborg's help created a key card to allow him access to the building.
"I'm in." J'onn says.
"What do you see?" Superman asks over radio commlink.
J'onn observes the room.
"There was… something here, but nothing now." J'onn says, as he rubs a residue off the lab table with his fingers.
"All evidence must have been completely obliterated." Superman says.
"Wait- I- I sense… something." J'onn says.
J'onn begins to tap into his telepathic powers. He can sense another mind in the room.
"HELLLLP… MMMMEEE." A voice says faintly.
"HELLLLP… MMMMEEE." The voice says again.
"Where are you?" J'onn asks.
"HEERRREEE." The voice says
"J'onn, what's happening?" Superman asks.
"Something's here." J'onn says.
"What?" Superman asks.
"I- I'm not sure." J'onn says.
J'onn focuses his telepathic powers, he knows there's another mind in the room. Using his powers, he is about to locate the source. On an astral plane, J'onn is about to see Nathanial.
"Nathanial!" J'onn shouts out.
"Help me please." Nathanial pleads.
"I will J'onn says.
J'onn returns to the physical room. He knows where Nathanial is, just not how to move him. J'onn phases his own body and reaches out for Nathanial. To J'onns own surprise, this tactic works. He is able to collect the essence of Nathanial's life force. J'onn looks around the room for somewhere to collect it so he can exit. He finds a large lead container and stores the matter that makes up Nathanial's being inside. J'onn then morphs back into General Eiling and leaves the facility.
J'onn takes the container back to the Hall of Justice. Superman, J'onn and Cyborg study it.
"I hardly know where to begin with this." Cyborg says.
"Join the club." Superman responds.
"I called The Flash, he may have some idea." Cyborg says.
"When will he be here?" Superman asks.
A gust of wind blows behind them.
"Right now." The Flash says as he enters the room.
"What do we have?" The Flash then asks.
"This container, it has matter that makes up a man." Superman says.
"You know how ridiculous that sounds?" Flash asks.
"There's two aliens, a speedster and me in this room and this is too much for you?" Cyborg asks.
"Point." Flash says with a shrug.
The Flash goes over and studies the container.
"This thing is giving off massive levels of radiation." The Flash says.
"The box contains it, but there's no way to let Nathanial out." J'onn says.
"Well, we all have various uniforms, perhaps we could construct one for him. Something like a hazmat suit, only to keep it safe from the inside." The Flash suggests.
"Is that something you could do?" Superman asks.
"Perhaps, I constructed this suit so it wouldn't burn off when I ran, so it certainly seems possible." The Flash says.
Over on the other side of Washington, General Eiling and Doctor Magala are studying the same thing.
"You see, there was nothing to contain the energy we pumped into his body." Doctor Magala explains.
"So we have to construct some sort of containment suit to keep him in?" General Eiling asks.
"Oh yes, I believe this suit I've created here should suffice." Doctor Magala says as he shows the general a red and orange suit he had crafted.
"And you're sure this'll work?" General Eiling asks.
"The only way to know is to test it." Doctor Magala says.
"Then let's go, right now." General Eiling says.
"But sir, we don't even have a test subject." Doctor Magala says.
"You let me worry about that." General Eiling says.
General Eiling makes his way to one of the highest security prisons in all of Washington. There he finds inmate Clifford Zmeck. Clifford was a hell of a soldier, but one of the vilest human beings on Earth. He served under Eiling in the US military until he was sentenced to life in prison for a list of heinous crimes. Even so, Eiling always felt he should have been given a pardon for all the good he had done on the battlefield. Today General Eiling was looking to give him that pardon.
"On your feet Zmeck." General Eiling says.
"Colonel, what are you doing here?" Clifford asks.
"It's general now, and I'm here to give you a second chance." Eiling says.
General Eiling takes Clifford to Doctor Magala's lab.
"General, back again?" The security guard up front asks.
"What do you mean again?" General Eiling asks.
"You were just here, less than an hour ago." The security guard says.
"No I wasn't." General Eiling says.
"Sir you took out some large container." The guard says.
"Let me see that log." General Eiling says.
The guard shows him the check in log. It shows General Eiling signing in and out of the building.
"Someone has made a fool of you, we have to hurry." General Eiling says, as he rushes Clifford down the hall and into Doctor Magala's office.
Over at the Hall of Justice, The Flash puts the finishing touches on the suit for Nathanial.
"Almost, and that should do it." The Flash says.
"That was fast." Superman says.
"The benefit of super speed." Flash replies.
"Are you ready?" Superman asks to J'onn and Cyborg."
"Ready Cyborg says.
J'onn hooks up a hose system that he and Cyborg worked on. The goal is that the hose will transfer the matter from the container into the suit giving Nathanial a physical form.
Inside Doctor Magala's lab, a similar procedure is being conducted. Clifford put on the suit that the doctor had created. He lays down on the lab table and the procedure begins.
Cyborg hits the button to begin the energy transfer.
Doctor Magala does the same thing.
"It's working, it's working!" Cyborg yells out.
General Eiling watches on as Clifford begins to get pumped with energy.
"AHHHH!" Clifford yells out.
"Hang in there solider." General Eiling says.
"Almost there." Cyborg says.
"We're close." Doctor Magala says.
"Almost." Cyborg says, the suit is filling up into a humanoid form.
"Just about." Doctor Magala says, his computer screen shows that Clifford's body is becoming pure energy.
"Just about there." Cyborg says.
"YAH!" Nathanial yells out.
"We did it!" J'onn exclaims.
"Nathanial, can you hear me?" Superman asks.
Nathanial takes a moment to get his bearings. He looks down at his hands. It's a weird sensation he feels.
"I- I'm alive." Nathanial says.
"Yes, you are." Superman says as he puts his arm on Nathanial's shoulder.
"I don't know how to thank you." Nathanial says.
Over in Doctor Magala's lab, his experiment is also finishing up.
"Transfer complete." Doctor Magala says.
The hoses detach from Clifford's body as Doctor Magala and General Eiling enter the room.
"Can you hear me soldier, how do you feel?" General Eiling asks.
Clifford sits up on the table.
"I feel, I feel- powerful." Clifford says.
Clifford looks down at his hands, they begin to glow energy.
"I think there's a Nobel Prize in your future doc." General Eiling says.
The general turns to look at the doctor, who almost blushes at the general's compliment. Then the doctor is blasted with a beam of energy right through his stomach. General Eiling steps back as the doctor's body disintegrates. He turns back to look at Clifford, who is standing there with his arm extended and energy glowing from his hand.
"What the hell are you doing?" General Eiling asks.
"You really think you can control me?" Clifford asks.
Clifford shoots a beam of energy at General Eiling. The general is able to jump out of the way as the energy beam hits a cabinet of chemicals causing a massive explosion.
Over at the hall of justice, the team is celebrating their victory. The Flash even made everyone root beer floats.
"I don't know how to thank you." Nathanial says.
"Just knowing you're safe is thanks enough." Superman says.
"So what are you going to call yourself now?" The Flash asks.
"What do you mean?" Nathanal asks back.
"Well we all have code names, you know, The Flash, Martian Manhunter, Superman." The Flash says.
"I just want to be me, Captain Nathanial Adams." Nathanial says.
"Captain Adams, Captain Atom, that's it, that's perfect." The Flash exclaims. I can see it now; we can even put an atom emblem on your chest here." The Flash says.
"Uh, sure." Nathanial says.
Just then the team hears a big explosion from outside. They look out and see a fire.
"That's Doctor Magala's lab!" J'onn says.
"Come on, we have to hurry!" Superman says.
The team rush to the lab.
