4.Gotham High.

At 'GOTHAM CITY HIGH SCHOOL', in senior history class, Mr. Ford-the history teacher, stood in front of his desk, discussing the history of the city with the class.

"And that, class, concludes the history of Gotham. Now, what i wanna talk about next is the future." Mr. Ford said.

All of the students, 17 and 18, sat at their arm-chair desks, with their open history books resting on them, listening to the lesson. Among them were Lacey and Wilder, who had taken the town bus the rest of the way here to avoid tartiness, with Lacey resting her arms on her desk-holding her yellow pencil in her right hand. When they arrived at the school, Lacey and Wilder went to their lockers where the 17-year old girl put her messenger-bag in her locker and the 18-year old boy placed his pack and skate-board in his locker, followed by both of them hurrying to history class. They had no homework, so there was nothing to retrieve from their messenger-bag/backpack.

Lacey had not been paying much attention to the morning lessons, for her mind kept drifting to what Tommy said the street gang kids said about her new home, Wayne Manor, about it being a haunted house. She knew not to believe them, but what if there was some truth in what they were saying? What if there was something going on at the mansion she and her parents didn't know of? Something not of this world. Normally she wouldn't entertain the thought of such a theory, and if this were any other city, she would not...but she wasn't in any other city. After all, this was Gotham. Stranger things always tended to happen here in Gotham. And even though she and her parents had only been here for the last ten months, she had seen enough to know that this was not a normal city. Especially since it was filled with all kinds of super-villains, like the Joker, Harley Quinn, Riddler, Scarecrow and many other weirdos who had once been normal human beings like her and everyone else in this classroom. Suppose it was her future to become a super-villain like the ones that were currently terrorizing the streets of Gotham? No matter what she did, no matter what she tried, that villainous fate would be waiting for her.

No, that couldn't be her future. She was too good, too nice, too kind. But most of the super-villains of Gotham were probably just as good, nice and kind as her once upon a time when they were human. It was just their future, is all. It had been determined in life that during the 90s, Gotham City would be terrorized by super-villains and that a mysterious masked individual known as The Bat would arrive later on to fight them and the rest of the criminal population off. But why would this person do a thing like that in the first place? No one would do anything like that, would they? Some people on the News had said The Bat was here to protect the city and to keep it's citizen's safe. Her mind wandered dreamlessly over these un-answered questions. Then it went to what she had told Tommy this morning concerning the street kids.

...

"Is it true that you live in the old Wayne Manor?" Tommy asked.

"Yeah, why?" Lacey asked.

"The gang kids say it's a real haunted house." Tommy said.

"(Chuckles) Well, you shouldn't always listen to what the gang kids say." Lacey said.

"Yeah. I guess you're right." Tommy said.

...

Lacey remained silent, lost in her thoughts, not sure what to do about them.

"Lacey?" Came the voice of Mr. Ford, snapping Lacey out of her thoughts.

"Sir?" Lacey said.

"Answer the question. What is the defenition of the would future?" Mr. Ford said.

"Oh, uh...the future is a time or period of time following the moment of speaking or writing; time regarded as still to come." Lacey answered.

"That's right, the future is a time that occurs later on in life. Either in a near timeline or a distant. timeline. The future is the next generation to come. Like the 2020s, which are 19 years from now." Mr. Ford said.

As Mr. Ford resumed talking about the future, Lacey looked out one of the windows on the left and noticed a black a 1930s Rolls-Royce Phantom III car parked on the left side of the street. Behind the wheel, gazing into her classroom...was a man. Or at least she thought it was a man. As far as she could tell, he was dressed in a black victorian suit, a black cape and a black top hat that was pulled down over his eyes. She didn't know why, but the guy gave her the creeps for some reason. In fact, the more she looked at him, she wondered if he were wearing a costume for a Halloween party. He'd better be, because if he wasn't, that guy was bad news.

Hoping the mysterious creepy driver would go away, Lacey re-focused on Mr. Ford, who was still rambling on about the future. As she had enough thoughts about Wayne Manor and Gotham for one day or for a lifetime, Lacey consintrated on the lesson. She wasn't going to look at that man. She knew he was still parked outside on the street, but she wasn't gonna give him the satisfaction of looking at him. Well, maybe just a bit to see if he was still there. She turned her head back to the window to see if the man was still parked in his car on the street...but he was gone.
